      Book Description

This authoritative guide presents the reasons behind industry regulation and the legal basis for it. Text discusses calculating rate base and rate of return, cost allocation, and rate design. Added attention is given to many of the new market-oriented forms of regulation, such as service unbundling, equal access to bottleneck facilities, competitive contracting, managed competition in health care, and incentive regulation.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must For Researchers.......2007-05-17

As Continental forces and Virginia militia units were engaged in winning independence, American quartermasters and provisioners struggled to provide these units with all the necessities of life, from meals and guns to meat, fodder for horses, the horses themselves, firewood, and every other type of material. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution. These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. This series is an extremely important genealogical tool for searchers in Revolutionary-era materials.

              5 out of 5 stars 1897 Sears Catalogue.......2006-11-10

I love it! It is fun to look at the the prices of the items that were sold back at the turn of the century.

5 out of 5 stars A portal to another time.......2006-09-26

This book is utterly fascinating for those who hold any sort of interest in bygone times. While not a step-by-step guide, it inadvertantly thrusts the reader into the role of a home owner of limited means in the late 1800s. You find yourself shopping, suckered in by the richly worded item desciptions and enticed by the promises of "best on the market," "guaranteed for a lifetime," and "will cure all diseases of the nervous system."

Unconsciously, you create your own little shopping list and envision a home where the husband builds everything from the buggy to the bathrooms while the wife prepares all the meals and pretties herself with skin whiteners and hair lotions.

I am so glad to have bought this catalogue. I use it as a writing prompt for my high school students, to encourage creative and analytical thought, and they delight in it. I implore everyone to investigate this book.

The 786 - page reprint of the 1897 Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalogue is a priceless piece of Americana. Profusely illustrated, readers will enjoy studying the surprisingly enormous range of consumer goods then available, most of which are obsolete or little used in American life today. From the $4.90 'Cast Iron Pig Trough' to the $3.00 'Cleveland Ball Bearing Wringer,' from the $1.75 'Magic Lantern Slide Projector for Juveniles' to the $3.35 'Velocipedes' bicycle and the $2.00, mohair-covered 'Ear Trumpet,' readers will turn the pages in delighted awe. Those interested in fashion and costuming will find the extensive pages on clothing remarkable. The average description for most items tallies at about 100 words, most of which are superfluous but fun to read.

There are 55 very detailed pages on clothing, hats, and accessories for men and boys, including $6.95 'Cashmere Suits,' $9.90 'Blue Flannel Grand Army Of The Republic Suits,' and 'Brownie Suits,' 'Fancy Sailor Suits,' and 'Children's Kilt Suits.' These sections are bolstered by idealized figures of mustached men strolling by the seaside in striped suits and straw boaters, pipe - smoking deep thinkers poised in velvet smoking jackets, and bashful lads posing in knee britches.

An equal number of pages are devoted to clothing, shoes, hats, and other accessories for women and girls, including 'Dr. Warner's Abdominal Corset' made with "extension steels, side lacings, and elastic gores on each side," girl's "reefer jackets," the $2.95 'Rich's Patent "Julie Marlowe" Lace Boot,' and 2 pages of heavily - festooned women's hats with names like 'the Leader,' 'the Susanne,' 'the Evangeline,' and 'the Bon Ton.' Presciently, many of the illustrations of women look remarkably like the matronly Mary Astor in the 1941 classic 'Meet Me In St. Louis.'

Especially interesting and comical are the items listed under 'Drug Department.' Here are found 'Injection No. 7,' which "is a reliable cure for all troubles of the urinary organs...no matter how severe the case,' and 'Dr. Rose's Obesity Powders' which explains that "too much fat is a disease and a great annoyance to those afflicted. . .it produces fatty degeneration of the heart, and sudden death results," and 'Beef, Iron, and Wine' nutritive, which, at $2.50 a gallon, was apparently very popular, "something no family should be without...used for extreme exhaustion caused by brain fatigue, eruptions, scrofula, and...depraved conditions of the blood."

There are 'vegetable cures' for 'female weakness' and 'fig laxatives,' 'Mexican Headache Cures' and 'Indian Cough Syrups,' 'microbe killers,' and "perfectly harmless" 'arsenic complexion wafers' which produce "pellucid clearness of complexion." "Reliable Worm Syrup and Worm Cakes" cure "the disease so fatal to children" and comes in "convenient form for children to take, which they readily do, thinking it is candy." 'Dr. Chaise's Nerve And Brain Pills' is a cure for those with "overworked sexual excesses."

Special mention should be given to the Sears, Roebuck & Co.'s own $0.75 brand 'Reliable Cure For the Opium And Morphia Habit,' which will "completely destroy that terrible craving for morphine . . .and free those victims from their terrible bondage." The 'Princess Bust Developer' and 'Princess Bust Cream Food' can be purchased separately or together for $1.46. Prepared by "an eminent French chemist," the bust cream promises a "plump, full, rounded bosom," while the bust developer, which comes in both 4 and 5 inch sizes, looks like a toilet plunger and is perfect "if nature has not favored you." Another ad educates potential women buyers by stating that "no worse affliction can befall a woman's face than to see a horrible growth of coarse hairs springing out like bristles," making her "disfiguring to behold." Oddly, 'Strangle Food' for cockroaches and 'Rat Killer - The Great Vermin Destroyer' are included among health and beauty products for the family.

Despite the exaggerated and misleading claims, this volume is overwhelmingly wholesome in nature, and provides an educational glimpse into the lives, consumer habits, social mores, and advertising methods of Americans of the era. Throughout, there are extended pages devoted to excerpts from grateful consumer letters with headings like "Proud Of The Buggy," "Perfectly Satisfied With The Revolver," "Everybody Says The Watch Is A Dandy," and "I Do Not Know A More Fair Or Honorable Firm." These pages are one of the catalogue's few disappointments, since the 'letters' are suspiciously uniform in tone, phrasing, and praise.

Other sections include 'Vehicle, Harness, and Saddlery,' 'Crockery And Glassware,' 'Watch And Jewelry,' 'Musical Goods,' 'Furniture,' 'Books And Stationary,' and 'Builder's Hardware And Material.'

This book is for those that understand stitchery with ease. The designs are really good to use with anything, even making bookmarks. This book is for the advanced cross stitcher, or embroiderer.

                                2 out of 5 stars Mixed Reviews.......2002-10-02

I like the designs, but the total black and white with tiny blocks makes the patterns hard to read. The designs are good, but lacking in color, so if you feel like playing around with them a bit, this is a great book - especially considering the price. Otherwise, I'd probably recommend staying away from it and going with a more expensive, though much more readable and more colorful alternative.

5 out of 5 stars Great book; great price.......2001-09-15

WOW! For the price this book is absolutely wonderful. All the patterns are in black & white, but it's still just as useful as most of the $...-$... celtic cross-stitch books.

                                4 out of 5 stars A worth while purchase.......2001-09-03

This book has many different designs available. The designs can be a bit small, and a bit difficult to read. I highly recommend taking these charts and enlarging them before starting work on them. There are a great variety in designs, some will take a while to complete, while others can be completed in much less time.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not great...........2000-07-02

If you're a true fan of Celtic art, you'll probably enjoy these patterns, but be warned; these will not appeal to everyone. Some of the patterns are outstanding in their design; others are just dull. While the interesting patterns out-number the boring ones, the color choices are bland (unless you really LOVE earth tones) and some of the charts are made up of too few stitches to represent the original designs. Still, if these things don't bother you, I strongly recommend this title.

First, the good: the oft-overlooked Villa Ottolenghi is my far and away my favorite work by Carlo Scarpa. This book is the only monograph I know of on the house. Unlike other monographs, which tend to contain only artful photographs of the finished work, this book contains dozens, if not hundreds, of Scarpa's sketches. It allows you to see how the house developed and how Scarpa worked (which is important as Scarpa has a reputation for frequent redesigns). The book also explains how the site and local zoning restrictions influenced the design, and how Scapra's freindship with the client gave him carte blanche in what would be his final residential design.

Now, the not-so-good: Well, a few of the pictures are blurry or out of focus. One full-page photo is so bad that I at first wondered if it was intended to be art piece. Also, out of the hundreds of sketches, there are no section drawings at all, and only one (unlabeled) hardlined plan. In a building with a floor plan as complex as the Villa Ottolenghi's, this left me feeling a little lost.

Overall, the book is rich in process and rationale. There's a lot to sink your teeth into. The best part for me was being able to peruse the hundreds of rough drawings and doodles, which must be the next best thing to rummaging through Scarpa's sketchbook.

                                    Book Description

In this stunning celebration and reappraisal of the importance of "women's work," acclaimed journalist Jean Zimmerman poignantly addresses the tug that many Americans of the twenty-first century feel between our professional and private lives. With sharp wit and intelligence, she offers evidence that in the current domestic vacuum, we still long for a richer home life -- a paradox visible in the Martha Stewart phenomenon, in the continuing popularity of women's service magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Family Circle, and Ladies' Home Journal -- whose combined circulation of over 17 million is nearly twice the combined circulation of Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report -- and the booming business of restorations, where onlookers get a hands-on view of domestic life as it flourished in past centuries. This book is about the ways home traditions passed from one generation to the next -- baking a birthday cake from scratch, cherishing family heirlooms, or discovering the satisfaction of piecing a quilt -- sustain our souls, especially in our ever more processed, synthetic world, where we buy "homemade" goods and fail to see the irony in that.

Made from Scratch tells the story of the unsung heroines of the hearth, investigating the history of female domesticity and charting its cultural changes over centuries. Zimmerman traces the lives of her own family's homemakers -- from her tiny but indomitable grandmother, who managed a farm, strangled chickens with her bare hands, and sewed all the family clothing, to her mother, who rejected her country upbringing yet kept a fastidious suburban home where the gender divide stayed firmly in place, to her own experiences as a wife and mother weaned on the Women's Movement of the 1970s, with its emphatic view that housework was a dirty word and that the domestic sphere was to be fled rather than cherished. In this book Zimmerman questions the unexamined trade-off we have made in a shockingly brief time span, as we've "progressed" from home-raised chickens to frozen TV dinners to McNuggets from the food court at the mall. What is lost when we no longer engage, as individuals and as a community, in the ancient rituals of food, craft, and shelter?

1 out of 5 stars Too Bad She Didn't.......2004-03-10

For the first 200 pages of this book, the author seems to have a love-hate view of "housewifery", appliances, societal changes, and never does seem to arrive at an opinion as to which is more desirable: a return to simpler times when the home was the center of family life versus the vissitudes and amenities of modern life. She advocates for both and neither. In the very end of the book, she finally lets slip that she enjoys and finds personal fulfillment in the needle arts of knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Read the last chapter and skip the rest.

This book does not contain illustrations, recipes, or much in the way of constructive suggestion as to how to recapture the presumed pleasure of the American hearth. It reads like a very long and dull diatribe lamenting that society and "home-made" have changed without ever getting her point across. The end notes and source lists are huge, leaving this reader wondering why this author never quite makes her point. Will she ever make up her mind?

                                    5 out of 5 stars A "pleasure" to read!.......2003-04-25

"Made From Scratch: Reclaiming the Pleasures of the American Hearth" by Jean Zimmerman is a beautifully written book describing the history and current state of the art of homemaking in America. Zimmerman, who comes from a long line of Southern roots matrons, was hit head on with the power of feminism in high school and college, catapulting her far away from her domestic foremothers. Now, a wife, mother and author, she has comprehensively researched her subject and presents it in straight-forward and intimate style. This book oozes with insightful anecdotes and facts about the modernization of American Homemaking, and what it reveals about our society in general. Vividly interesting, entertaining, and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

                                      Product Description

From Publishers Weekly: In the past century, homemakers have become a dying breed. The domestic achievements of our mothers and grandmothers have been devalued and replaced by the easy options of fast food, hired help and prefabricated products of all kinds; meanwhile, the arts of cooking, needlework and gardening become the province of a dedicated few. Zimmerman (Breaking with Tradition: Women and Work) urges both men and women to honor and preserve the domestic achievements of our female ancestors. "In the small private act of stirring a pot of homemade soup or knitting a scarf for a loved one we preserve the rich heritage of the home and keep back the swelling tide of mediocrity and commodification that is fast replacing it-and, most important, nourish our own souls." Although Zimmerman asserts that revaluing "women's work" is a feminist act, her argument occasionally downplays the positive impact the feminist revolution has had on American women in the past four decades. In the end, Zimmerman advocates for a mild domestic revolution of her own: "I would like to see every person perform just one small domestic act." It's a startling request in its simplicity, and yet it highlights the very best that modern feminism has offered women: nowadays, for some women, to perform a small domestic act is a choice. Though the book's gender politics may raise a few hackles, the author offers a thoughtful and engaging defense of domesticity. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book.......2007-08-16

This story is by turns wonderful (especially early on), depressing (especially toward the end), and hilarious (pretty much throughout), but always fascinating. Years of distance from the events allows Scully be as critical of himself as anyone else, and this gives the book an authentic quality. I only know the Dead's best-known songs, and I knew almost nothing about the band or Garcia before reading this book, yet it was a page-turner for me. Other musicians and cultural figures of the era make interesting appearances too.

5 out of 5 stars Read this one first..........2006-02-12

If you are wanting to read the "back story" behind the music and are just now starting your homework, let me suggest you start here. Why? Why here, when this is obviously a flawed, overly subjective work seen through a prism of chemical distortions, bringing us what are probably broken and incorrectly reassembled memories? Because this is a book you will finish. You will read this from cover to cover and most likely love it, and because this book is (more than any other out there) about the FUN of the Grateful Dead. That part gets left out - a lot.

Other reviewers are not wrong - the last half of this book is largely about Scully and Garcia's drug addiction. But it isn't, as is made clear, like everyone else was a health food nut. (Well, Bobby was, but that's beside the point.) And there is also a ton of history going on during this time, too. (For one thing, we learn some of the reasons that Bob Dylan was so devoted to Jerry and said such gracious things about him later.) But what made it all work, the glue that held it together, was the fact that this music was just so much more fun than anything else going on. This book is about that fun, and this book is fun to read. There aren't many books that have made me laugh harder.

Where you go after this is your own business: if you want to read a superb biography and perhaps the most important book of the whole genre, read the Garcia biography. "Dark Star" is heartbreaking but very insightful, and much of it makes "Living With The Dead" seem tame by comparison, as it is all first person interviews of persons involved. The McNally book is probably the completest, but is often as dry as toast and completely disengaged from the joy this band dispensed. So start here for fun, and to get a taste for what the life was like, and put a little color in the cheeks of all those black and white photographs.

And as to why this book doesn't get much into the music, it's because no book could get in to the music and talk about anthing else. Scully was not a Dead head - he would probably rather have seen a Stones concert any night. He worked for the band, he didn't follow them for love of the music. If you want to get inside the actual music, that's a whole separate library you need to read. We aren't talking about the songs, we're talking about the band, and this is as good a place as any to meet them, and better than most.

4 out of 5 stars Honest and Compelling Work.......2005-09-21

This book's rather tired "Gonzo" style and endless discussion of drug abuse are what is best and worst about it. How is it that one so long associated with the Grateful Dead and, particularly, with Jerry Garcia has failed to arrive at any more mature perspective on it than this book reveals. Scully seems still to be tickled pink by the fact that this or that group of squares got dosed back in whenever it was. Deep in his heart he seems to mourn the fact that he'll never bed an underage groupie again. And, yet this seems what is most gripping about this book for one such as myself for whom there simply no question of interest - the experience of endless hours of listening to the Grateful Dead and catching shows has simply molded what I am. The apolitical posture. The notion that there was something radical or even revolutionary about tripping and drug use per se. The celebration of blind destructiveness. So much of the truth of not only Garcia and the band but of the scene they created is given expression here in a way that gives it a very definite objectivity, that allows one better to reflect. We are now at least a decade and a half from a time when anyone could imagine himself to still be living in the "long sixties." That time is quite definitively past. Scully's book in many ways seems not to have written recently, but to emerge from the early 80s sometime. Or perhaps Scully kept good journals and did little more than edit them together. At any rate, the book has a certain immediacy that one finds it difficult to imagine Scully could produce from memory.
I agree with much of what others have said regarding the vindictiveness (and inaccuracy) of Scully's comments on Weir. The idea that Bobby wasn't brilliant in his own right as a guitarist and ideal complement to Garcia is laughable for anyone familiar with the music from the period of Scully's so-called Bobby problem.
And the best part of the book as a work of memoir is definitely the early chapters on the Haight scene.

                                        3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2005-03-01

I found the book to be fairly accurate, BUT most of it is Rock Scully's personal opinion and experience. He seems to forget that you aren't reading the book to learn about him, but to gain more insight into the band. Overall it wasn't too bad. I have read it a couple of times and enjoyed it. Rock Scully was a close personal freind for many years and he does capture the pre-band era of the Grateful Dead.

The author of the review, "A reader," claims to have worked for the Dead, but inaccurately spell's Garcia's first name several times "Gerry" and Mickey's last name "Heart." As such, I have real doubts this guy indeed did work for the band and hence, his comments on the book seem a bit suspect.

Rather than depicting Herod as the merciless author of the Massacre of the Innocents the author shows him to be a giant of a man who has many claims to greatness.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A Different Look @ Herod.......2006-09-09

Stewart Perowne's classic "The Life and Times of Herod the Great" offers a different look at this ancient king of the Jews. Having penned the book first in 1956 it was republished, as a paperback, in 2003. This biography is well resourced with maps, chronological tables, and a helpful family tree graph (one does wish for more end notes than the provided 2 pages).

Through much of history Herod the Great is considered an evil, vicious, family killer (a view, probably, originating with early Christianity's abhorrence of his infanticide order in Mathew 2) whose only interest was power. Perowne, knowing this herodian tradition, proffers considerable suggestion that Herod has been misunderstood. The author forthrightly says that Herod's subjects were often "grateful to him" (page 111) and that he did much for the humanitarian benefit of his kingdom.

Using 1st century sources (Josephus, Tacitus, Strabo, Dio Cassius, etc.) the author reviews Herod's life, family, rule, and history. Perowne considers the king's accomplishments, conquests, treaties, architectural constructions, and legacies. Readers learn of Herod's rise to power with Roman support, his Idumean familial origins, his ability to charm the most powerful politicians of his day, his refusals for Cleopatra's romantic invitations, his ability to make vast sums of money (Herod was, perhaps, the wealthiest person of his era), and much more. Perowne also speaks to Herod's vast building enterprises across Palestine and Syria. He witnesses Herod's personal friendships with Rome's leaders and his animosity for fellow Arab rulers.

Herod built a new fresh water system for arid Jerusalem. He began a third construction era on Jerusalem's temple (a grand project which continued into Christian times). As king, he constructed a busy seaport on the shores of the Mediterranean at Caesarea. In the famine of 24 BC, Herod sold all his palatial furniture and princely mealtime equipment for the purchase of Egyptian grain in order to feed his populace.

It is true that Herod the Great executed all his political enemies included several in his family (one wife and her mother, his uncle, and two of his sons, etc.). This was shocking even for the turbulent and murderous times in which he lived. Perowne speaks to these events bringing clear insight to each episode.

"The Life and Times of Herod the Great" is an interesting and helpful book. It's brief chapters (averaging only 6 pages each) make this 186-page text a quick read. It is recommended to everyone interested in the Herodians, middle Roman history, the century before Christ, and those curious about Herod the Great.
