An excellent all round review of what modern rimfire sport shooting is all about if you are interested in getting aquinted with that, and I would have given it 4 stars if it gave a more comprehensive review of past rifles and handguns manufactured since the cartridge evolved. But it succeeds 100% as an introduction for laymen starting out.

Hits The Mark!.......2006-09-04

For background, I am a rifleman of sorts as well as a ballistician.I also have a Ph. D. James E. House has a Ph. D in Chemistry and his extensive technical background is evident all through this work. This book is encyclopedic in scope and I have found no significant errors in it. I would observe that he does not discuss nor explicate ballistics tables from which ballistic coefficients are derived. I would have preferred that at least some of his more accurate rifles were tested using ten round groups at 50 yards but his use of five round groups is reasonable (multiply five round group size by 1.414 to estimate ten round group size.) I also wish he had devoted (more) attention to rimfire bench rest competition. This may be a bit more detail than the beginner will wish but for anyone with a serious interest in rimfire cartridges and shooting, this book is a must-have. Doc D.

Nice Try.......2006-01-04

I am an avid .22 rimfire fan. I've bought books on the .22 rimfire years ago and have been waiting for something more current. Good book covering some of the .22's out there and ammo testing along with info on the new .17HMR and .17M2 calibers. The author repeated himself over and over across several chapters the same information. A lot of the photos were reprinted across several chapters. This book could have been about half the size if the author had not repeated information throughout the book. Most of the guns covered in the book were from the author's own collection and did not really cover the various manufacturers offerings. Several good chapters on sighting in and ammo ballistics but overall I was disappointed in this book. If you are looking for a "little new" information on the .22 rimfire there is some here. If you are looking for more in depth information you will have to wait until someone else comes along and writes a better book.

I found this book to be lacking in details for the advanced shooter who is looking for information on individual rifles and pistols .the author did not go into much detail ,this book would be ok for a beginner who knows nothing about firearms.It was not what I was looking for.

Wide variety of detailed and appealing animals.......2002-01-26

This oversized book presents many beautiful charted designs of animals set in their habitats. I particularly liked the animal alphabet and animal numerals, as well as the idea of joining several squares featuring animals such as otters and trout and quail into a carpet (though I would use it with her ivy border as a wall hanging - no way is it going on the floor!).
The only odd thing was the decision to scatter photographic collage pictures throughout the book. I didn't find them particularly appealing and wasn't sure why they were included except that Elizabeth had fun making them and wanted them in the book.
For those who want to do needlework animals in a classic, realistic style rather than a cutesy or country style, this book includes many appealing projects.

I had the pleasure of meeting the author on a flight from Frankfurt to Rome last summer. I bought and read this book with great enthusiasm. The author is brilliant and funny. The book takes us to various personalities, times and eras in the historical evolution of our country as these homes are used as the medium to demonstrate the message of the time and culture. It is eloquently written in unpretensious prose. I must read.

A wonderful addition to any library.......1999-11-06

This book has immediately become a favorite of my wife and I. We jump from chapter to chapter, revisiting homes we have actually been to and learning additional tidbits about them. As well, we are delving into homes we now hope to visit in the future. The pictures are well-chosen and attractive and the author's choice of text brings these dwellings to life. We recommend this "work of historic art" to everyone, no matter their level of interest in this area.

This fabulous book contains interesting histories and illustrations of the homes of famous Americans. I especially liked the sections on the historical California homes, since my husband and I have visited several of them. As a student of both archicture and history, this book inspired me to plan future visits to each of the homes described. Highly recommended!

If you're a parent, then this book is a must!.......2000-09-25

With all the book choices available for parents today, I personally find this one to be the best. It is easy to read and understand, addresses children of all ages (birth to teen), and most importantly, provides a winning process to be able to identify, brainstorm, and come up with ideas that effectively yield positive consequences to misbehavior. Additionally, specific examples are cited throughout the book on how to positively handle common discipline problems such as sibling rivalry, homework, lying, mealtimes, bedtime, tantrums, and you-name-it.

Gootman reminds us all that "discipline" is to teach, not to punish, and teaches us parents how to accomplish this with rule setting, encouragement, love, and practice. Dr. Gootman is a top expert in her field, but it also apparent that she is a Mom (mother of 3) and offers empathy and ways to harness our anger. My favorite chapter is "What's Fair to Expect at Each Age" as a barometer for clear, fair limits.

The book has helped my parenting tremendously. It's one of those kept out on our coffee table as a constant reference.

A well-written account of a fascinating life.......2006-04-13

I write this review mainly to second the opinion of my fellow reviewer D.C. Meyer. I found this book to be very readable, and a positively enjoyable way to learn the details of Bechet's life. Chilton is especially good on covering the contradictory or less-than-likeable aspects of Bechet's character. And some of the anecdotes are priceless. My favorite is the author's encounter with a drunken musician on a train--a classic frame for a classic Bechet story.

Like everything written by Chilton, this book is really boring. The author's obsession with discography makes this book an enumeration of who played which tune where and when. Bechet deserves a better biography! Collier, help us!

Great Research.......2003-09-02

The rersarch and information put into this great book is extraordinary. Chilton did a superb job about researching every part of Bechet's life, including his ancestory, childhood friends, and other hobbies besides playing playing clarinet or sax. This book is also a very fast reading biography and i find it enjoyable to read.

Well Researched and Written Life of Jazz Great.......2000-03-25

Sidney Bechet was not only one of the greatest jazz musicians ever, he was one of the most facinating characters in the music. He wrote his own poetic autobiography, "Treat It Gentle". After reading "Treat It Gentle" you might want to know even more about Bechet, and wonder how much of his stories are fact or fiction. If so, "Sidney Bechet The Wizard of Jazz" is the book for you.

British musician and writer John Chilton is one of the very best jazz researchers. His carefully gathered information is presented well in this book. Find out about Bechet's personality, the real story of his time in French prison, insightfull analysis of his recordings, and more.

This book is an example of what a well researched and written jazz biography should be.
