The Most Interesting Governor Florida Ever Had.......2007-01-24
Florida politicians seem to branch off into two different camps. The first are the bland reassuring centrists who do little to rock the boat. Charlie Crist, Bill Nelson, James McNair Baker, Bob Graham, Reubin Askew, Collins, and even Jeb Bush seem to fit into this camp. Then there are those politicans who seem to thrive on getting into public spats and often have larger than life personalities like Pepper, Broward, Robert Hilton, John Milton, Harrison Reed, Catts, Katherine Harris. While some try to straddle the two sides (George Smathers comes to mind), most of Florida's leading figures are in camp or the other.
Claude Kirk, the flamboyant businessman who was the first Republican governor of Florida since Reconstruction, fits into the camp that needed battles. In this breezy but excellent look at the Kirk years, Edmund Kallina offers great insight into the many high profile battles that the pugnacious governor launched. Some of them were successful (war on crime, taking on Rap Brown and black radicals, even, suprisingly, reforming government and preserving the enviroment) while others were failures (civil rights issues, especially those dealing with education). Kirk was not a conservative by any means, as his endorsement of Nelson Rockefeller in 1968 proved (and that would come back and haunt him). Despite losing to Askew in 1970 and the constant battles with his fellow Republicans, Kirk set the stage for subsequent Republican triumphs in Florida.
Kallina provides an excellent narrative of this pivotal governorship. Kirk's larger than life personality leaps off the pages. While most academic biographies are some of the best cures for insomina known to man, this one is very entertaining, namely through Kirk's constant battles and his often funny (if also sometimes wildly off the mark) attacks on his opponents. While Kallina's argument that Kirk was as succesful as Askew and Graham in office may be open for debate (though certainly Kallina is at least not out the ballpark), one suspects that Florida will remember Kirk's antics and comments long after the bland centrists are forgotten by all save the archivists and Sunshine State history buffs.
Claude Kirk, A Remarkable Conservative Governor.......2001-05-20
The book "Claude Kirk and the Politics of Confrontation" is an extremely interesting view of an interesting man, warts and all. A conservative Florida Governor who was honest and extremely blunt, he was probably the last politician in recent history to leave office less financially affluent than when he entered political life. He shot from the hip and didn't watch to see a windsock of read the latest opinion poll. Sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong, but he always took responsibility for his actions.
His sense of humor sometimes bordered on the bizarre. He once showed up for a campaign speech on horseback and loved to play jokes on the press that were not always well taken. Once he baited the press and had them hang around all day for an important announcement. After hours of wading through mundane business that did not interest them, he announced: 'And now for the important announcement, our astronauts will now carry real Florida orange juice into space instead of Tang!'
The book is insightful and illustrates the never-dull life of a colorful politician.
Product Description
The Emergence of the idea of a new world The collective discoveries of Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, John and Sebastian Cabot, and Giovanni da Verrazzano constitute a distinct Italian Era of Discovery which laid the groundwork for all other voyages which followed. The Italian discoverers deserve a place alongside the well-known Humanists in the history of art, literature, philosophy, and government by virtue of their research and accomplishments. The explorers also made original contributions to the fields of science, navigation and cartography. The world view of the Italian explorers evolved to include the concept of a new world. They had to reevaluate their cosmography and change the maps to reflect their new knowledge. The concept of a New World was equally profound as that of a new age. The most important contribution of the Italian explorers was not what they found, but the change in thinking that took place when they tried to explain their discoveries. This book has been read by those with an interest in the Age of Discovery, Renaissance Humanism, and the history of the New World. It has been used in university classes a required reading in classes related to these topics.

Book Description
Featured are hats, purses, hankies, gloves, fans, parasols, hosiery, shoes, aprons, and capes. This book is a compelling photo study of the styles for each era - Victorian, Edwardian, Roaring Twenties, Depression, WWII, Fabulous Fifties, and Modern - and identification and value guide for collectors of vintage fashion. 2003 values. REVIEW: This book covers the accessories that women have used over the past 150 years, some pieces dating back even earlier to 1820, like a parasol from the Jackson-Decatur debates. A glimpse into the closets and trunks of the author, a private collector for over 30 years, reveals many parts of ensembles of ladies from the past.

This book was put together very well, there is so much to see and the pictures are all nice and clear.
A Generous Sharing.......2001-07-29
This book is the generous sharing of Ms.Johnson's passion of 25 years - the collecting of vintage clothing and accessories. With overviews of all of a woman's favorite accessories, the book can easily serve as a basic primer for those with a new-found interest in vintage pieces. The information on documentation, age determination, and worth accessment is both helpful and inspirational. The numerous close-up photos of a wide variety of accessories, along with drawings, illustrations, and ads from old periodicals will delight both new and experienced collectors, as well as those simply interested in the past - for fashion, as always, tells us much about culture. Ladies' Vintage Accessories is written in a personable style and is full of both information and food for thought. Highly Recommended.
An OK anthology of pictures of vintage accessories.......2001-06-28
This book follows the current trend in vintage clothing books, in that it consists of photos of items belonging to one collector, presented as an identification and price guide. There are brief captions and a little explanatory text. The author has photographed her items flat or on stands, thus avoiding the jarring effect created in some other books by the use of very modern-looking live models. Most of the items represent everyday, easily purchasable vintage accessories rather than spectacular or rare collectibles. There are also many black-and-white period advertising pictures, possibly to atone for the relatively small number of pre-1900 items photographed from the collection. The prices (unfortunately!) seem low for the current market, and I found no indication of how they were derived. Unlike some other books, most of the time the author avoids gushing about her collection. However, she does follow the current trend of giving comparatively little practical information on how to restore and use vintage accessories (which many collectors want to do), on the grounds that they are "too precious." In fact, most of the items pictured in her book could be worn and enjoyed without much risk of damage.
Outstanding reference book.......2001-05-20
LaRee Johnson-Burton's book, Ladies Vintage Accessories, is outstanding. The photographs were stunning, and the information imparted about the value and description of the collection was exceedingly valuable. Quite frankly, I feel this book is a must-have, not only for the serious collector of vintage accessories and garments, but for writers of historical fiction, who can use this guide to bring them back in time and make certain that their characters are properly adorned. From cobalt blue Victorian parasols to 1920 gold mesh bags, this is a valuable and beautiful crafted book, packaged impeccably by Collector Books, and written by an author/collector who is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about her field. --Karen Plunkett-Powell, author, Remembering Woolworth's

Almost Perfect.......but missed the mark.......2001-07-13
From the opening page to almost the middle of the book is absolutely wonderful! The photographs are exquisitely done in color, the descriptions are complete & there are usually no more than 4-6 photos per page. Suddenly, it stops and the reader is left with pages filled with very small, black & white photos and wondering "What the heck happened??" The smaller compacts should have been the ones in the larger pictures and they are screaming for color! As for the educational & reference content, this book is hard to beat and will make an excellent tool for reading about the mechanisms of vintage compacts. Plus, the variety of compacts is mind-boggling! Recommended purchase but don't expect 100% satisfaction with the photographs & layouts.
a complement to the Mueller books.......2001-06-21
Gerson knows her compacts--she is an absolute authority, and this book gives many fine examples of compacts from all periods of time as well as good information about collecting. The color photos are a joy to look at. However, I don't like the way the book is organized--it's difficult to find what your looking for because things aren't arranged in logical order. In addition, I think it's a shame to have black and white photos--the majority of compacts really can't be appreciated unless they are seen in color, hence my 4-star rating. Mueller's two books are arranged better, with color photos for every compact, and Gerson should have tried to emulate that while making the book her own. But this book complements Mueller's, and for a rabid compact collector, this book is a welcome addition to the other books out there.
A visual feast for compact collectors & useful information.......2001-04-19
This book is simply beautiful. It is full of every kind of example of vintage compacts made, the photography of the compacts is stunning and many are in color. Plus it includes useful information for compact collectors on the history of compacts, helpful hints in collecting , vintage advertisments of compacts and how to identify and determine exact date compacts were made through patten numbers which Gerson includes at the end of the book. I got my copy of this book from Gerson herself through the Compacts collector club which she is the president of, autographed for me by her and although this particular edition of her book is out of print I would highly recommend her new one vintage and vogue ladys compacts as well. For all those fellow compact collectors these books are a must.

Beautiful Bargello, the flame stitch.......2002-11-01
I have plied a needle for many years and bought this book in hope of adding to my skills. The patterns are clear and easy to follow with less eyestrain than with just black and white charts. I usually work in miniature and much to my delight found this technique to be very adaptable. I then went in search of other publications for bargello and although I found several none of them lived up to my expectations after viewing and using the information in this publication. Hopefully Joyce Petschek and her editors have another book in the works.
Beautiful Bargello.......2000-02-08
Gorgeous photography and a very artistic author make this book a joy to own for any needlework enthusiast. I plan on making several of these cushions for my living room and have already completed 2 of them.
I think the book could have been much better, however, and even more informative had the author not infused it with gushy, flowery pages about color that made no sense and were totally useless.
For example:
"The dynamic quality of these reds enhances productivity and renews ambition. The interspersed touches of violet release negativity, cool and calm hidden emotions, encouraging a sense of distance so impulsive reactions can be changed into meaningful actions". What does one do with that piece of info?
But I only bought it for the artistry and it is very artistic at that. I still would buy another bargello book if she put one out. Hopefully she will devote more space to her beautiful artistry and less, much less, to the literary fru fru.

Dazzling.......2000-01-05
I was never a fan of bargello until I saw this book. It is filled with the most beautiful designs and colour/fibre choices to suit any home decor. I sincerely hope the author will publish some more of her innovative, unique and dazzling creations. Soon!
EXCELLENT!.......1998-11-08
I am new to Bargello embroidery and decided to purchase this book without having ever done Bargello. The book is easy to read, has 25 projects (beginner to advanced) and shows the patterns for each one. The sections are divided into colors which is nice if you're looking to make something with a particular color in mind. I am nearing completion of my first Bargello project ("Garland") and am eager to start on my second one. Beautiful pictures throughout. There are only a couple of patterns that I thought were useless (in my humble opinion) such as the hat brim and the Bargello-covered bricks (door stops). Why put that energy into something, and then use it for the floor?! Other than this one project, I would still highly recommend anyone purchasing this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great for frustrated parents.......2005-09-15
I've been having a frustrating time with my son for the past 3 years and wished that I found this book much earlier than I did. This book presents alternative ways of approaching my troubled teen. I have applied some of the techniques; I'm seeing some positive changes only after about 2 to 3 weeks. I really recommend this book and the ideas in it.
Worthy of being on every parents bookcase!.......2000-05-10
Raising Children You Can Live With is a book many parents can benefit from. Mr.Raser gives many practical suggestions for dealing with kids. I thought his "Strategic Interaction" plan would be helpful for many, and he gives good guidelines for how to deal with lying, cheating, a child who doesn't obey rules, and how to deal with a child who may show signs of depression. Mr. Raser has a great sense of humor, and his use of Calvin and Hobbes comics hooked me, as I'm a long-time fan of that comic strip! I think parents who read this book will find many useful, practical suggestions that will aid them in raising a child they can live with, and as he says, have fun doing it!
Should be in every parent's "arsenal".......1999-10-29
Although I usually read parenting books by Brazleton and other highly-publicized authors, a friend recommended that I try this one. I could just kiss her for that. This book isn't a summary of all the parenting advice you've ever heard (what a relief). Mr. Raser tackles issues with teens like a pro, and he would be the only person I know of that could raise a house full of teenagers and still go to bed every night with a smile on his face.
Book Description
Sergei Prokofiev was a bold innovator who eschewed the beaten path in art all his life, often in definance of orthodox tastes. His compositions, many of which are today recognized masterpieces of musical art, usually evoked either genuine bewilderment or sharp criticism when first performed.
Prokofiev's music is performed today all over the world; his works are studied at music schools everywhere.
The first two parts of this book are devoted to the composer's own writings (his autobiographical notes, articles and reviews), the rest to articles about Prokofiev by prominent Soviet musicians, artists, and others who were associated with him at one or another period of his life.

The Mind and Music of Prokofiev.......2007-05-02
Harlow Robinson spent years in Soviet Russia researching Prokofiev during the height of the Cold War. His research does not just include manuscripts and letters but also involves many personal conversations with those who knew Prokofiev and even with those who persecuted Prokofiev. As a result he navigates his way through Prokofiev's life with that added dimension of relating personally to those events. Robinson's writing is interesting and warm without being too academic or dry. This book seems to be intended for any real fan of Prokofiev. Lastly, this book really strives to explain some of the perplexities of Prokofiev's decisions. In particular, Robinson strives to explain why Prokofiev needed to return to Russia after his extended residence in Paris. This book is well worth the time to read.
popular biography that brings rewards.......2005-04-06
Robinson's is a useful popular biography of Prokofiev that is better researched and better written than any other English language bio of the great composer. Equal measure is given to Prokofiev's time in the West, and to his life after returning to Russia. There's much that's interesting here - a persistent exploration of Prokofiev's quixotic relationship with Diaghilev, generous delving into the composer's personal life, including especially some revealing passages on the almost uncharacteristic affection Prokofiev lavished on his children, and a resonant view of his work habits. Prokofiev's career disappointments were many, some even tragic, and the author doesnt beat around the bush, but the admirable thread of fierce devotion maintained by Prokofiev toward his own unquenchable musical purpose is thoughtfully argued by Robinson throughout the book, indeed it's one its strengths. The author even notes details of some of Prokofiev's foppish Parisian clothing that helped start him off on the wrong foot on his return to Russia. There are a number of subtle moments like that where one can discern the winning hand of a committed biographer. The importance of Prokofiev's canon of works is denied a hearing for the most part, but the book suffers little for that. The useful appendices include a chronology and a catalogue (by genre) of the composer's works, in addition to a healthy bibliography. I recommend this book for anyone just taking up the subject of Prokofiev. Listening again to the seventh Piano Sonata would perhaps serve more succinctly for the already initiated.
Well worth reading.......2002-09-23
Harlow Robinson's book is excellent; well worth reading. He strikes the right balance between the composer's personal charateristics and the body of his musical creation. The book is rich in detail, yet to-the-point; it is objective, yet reflects the complexity of this sometimes very unpleasant genius. It is perfectly comprehensible for the interested non-expert who has invested a good deal of time listening to Prokofiev's music, and seeing his movies, ballets and operas. As a Russian speaker familiar with every day speech and everyday life in the Soviet Union, I can say that Mr Robinson has a keen understanding of that culture, right down to having a very fine ear for transliterations. The composer is the Beethoven of the twentieth century: the one who has created the musical language which is so much a part of us that we take it for granted. Robinson brings us the man and the mind behind that language.
A core addition to Music History supplemental reading lists.......2002-08-09
Sergei Prokofiev: A Biography by Harlow Robinson (Professor of Modern Languages and History, Northeastern University) is an exhaustive, detailed, scholarly, and documented account of the life, times, inspiration, and personal history of acclaimed Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953). A handful of black-and-white photographs and a brand new foreword and afterword by author Harlow Robinson enhance this reprint of the most thorough Prokofiev biography to be found in the English language to date. A superbly written, insightfully informated, and ighly recommended for anyone with a keen interest in the evolution of individual musical greatness as reflected in the life and work of a seminal European composer, Sergei Prokofiev is a core addition to any Music History supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.
Too glib and superficial to be informative!.......2002-05-14
I read this book when it first appeared some ten years ago, having read much of the other work on P. (books by Israel Nestyev, Victor Seroff, etc.). Indeed there is a lack of good literature on P. in English. Unfortunately, Robinson's book is sadly written-down and dumbed-down for a sub-TIME-Magazine reading public. It is not necessary to do so to write a good, readable, un-academic biography (compare the superb bio of poet Marina Tsvetaeva by Viktoria Schweitzer). So this book wasted a fine opportunity: its evaluations of both life and works are simplistic. Robinson claims to be "above" the ideological divisions of Cold War Prokofiev scholarship (e.g. pre-Stalinist vs. Socialist Realist Prokofiev), but he does not engage this problem at all, at least not in any thoughtful way, and blurs over it with bland cheery platitudes. Disappointing!

Prokofiev--A Biography: From Russia to the West 1891-1935
ASIN: 1555533477 |
Book Description
One of the most important and influential composers of the twentieth century, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was also a prolific and gifted writer. Besides producing diaries, short stories, dramas, reviews, and the libretti for his own operas, Prokofiev conducted lively and frequent correspondence with family friends, classmates, and notable cultural figures in the Soviet Union and abroad.
This engaging volume collects for the first time in English the most representative and enlightening of Prokofiev's letters, including some previously suppressed missives that have never before been published. Expertly translated and annotated by Harlow Robinson, the correspondence presented here covers Prokofiev's earliest years at St. Petersburg Conservatory, his extensive worldwide travels, and his return to Moscow. Among the correspondents are childhood friend Vera Alpers, harpist Eleonora Damskaya, ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev, theatrical director Vsevolod Meyerhold, Soviet critic Boris Asafiev, composers Vernon Duke and Nikolai Miaskovsky, soprano Nina Koshetz, musicologist Nicolas Slonimsky, violinist Jascha Heifetz, conductor Serge Koussevitsky, and film director Sergei Eisenstein.
Prokofiev vividly describes, often with dramatic flair and a quirky sense of humor, concerts, performances, his compositions, political events, and meetings with other musicians and composers. His observations are peppered with musical gossip as well as eccentric, original, and disarmingly apolitical insights. Like his music, the writing style is laconic, brisk and tart, full of energy.
Taken together, the letters provide a cultural and musical history unequaled in the correspondence of any other modern composer. This indispensable edition will shed new light on Prokofiev's misunderstood life and career, illuminate his creative processes and aesthetic principles, and introduce his exceptional literary talents to those already captivated by his musical genius.

Compiled and retold by Peninnah Schram, Ten Classic Jewish Children's Stories presents ten classic stories of Jewish and Biblical history. Each tale is presented in a few pages and enhanced with brilliant and powerful color illustrations by Jeffrey Allon. Each individual story is also marked with points to consider, such as "How does this story show us that Miriam gave the Jewish people the strength to go on?" for the tale of Miriam the Wise. An inspirational anthology, deeply respectful of the holy scriptures from which it presents its tales, Ten Classic Jewish Children's Stories is enthusiastically recommended for young readers.
Excellent retelling of classic tales, reinforcing values.......1998-12-25
Schram, a master of Jewish storytelling, and leader of the Jewish storytelling movement in the USA, retells ten classic Jewish folktales from the Talmud, Aggadah, and Torah Midrash. Each story is followed by questions which help the readers and listeners to think more deeply about the lessons of the tales and reinforce its Jewish values. For example, in the Talmudic tale about why the Sun is large, the moon is small, and the stars seem even smaller, we learn about complaining and jealousy, and how you have to be careful what you wish for. Jeffrey Alon's watercolors help to capture the essence of the tales. My favorite tale was that of Honi, the Rainmaker, as retold from the Gemara. During a drought, the people of Jerusalem ask Honi to intercede for them and pray for rain. Then they complain that it is raining too little, and then too much. Once again, you have to be careful what you ask for, I guess.
