Radical Republican Tries to Outsmart Lincoln.......2007-06-02
Salmon Chase is a most complex man and the age in which he lived his adult life is fascinating to anyone interested in U. S. History. Many historians have given us biographies of S. P. Chase, the editor Dr. Niven's being one of the best, but however good they are cursed with the author's inability to overcome his humanity and predjudices. It is forthis reason the collected works of an historic figure are so important. Chase led an active life as governor of Ohio, defender at the bar of abolitionists, anti-slavery senator with his congressional colleague Joshua Giddings, as Lincoln's Secy. of the Treasury, as intriguer in the war in Texas, and finally as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court upon the death of Taney (a break for which Lincoln had waited some time). To put preasure on Lincoln Chase offered his resignation as Secy. of the Treasury, Lincoln refused but kept the resignation letter and used it when the position of Supreme Court Chief Justice bacame available thus getting Chase out of the way and not offending radical republicans.
For a better understanding of the man and his tumultuous times I highluy recommend all the volumes of the Salmon P. Chase Papers.

Excellent, Well Written, Survey Book!!.......2004-01-13
This book can be read quickly to get a general idea of
what an inventor needs to do, then it can be read in
more detail as the inventor tried to figure out
whether a particular expense is tax deductable or not
(or maybe it can be depreciated).
The chapters are targeted well to an inventor's needs:
Chapter 6 is about how to prove to the IRS that you are
serious about your inventing activities.
And, by the way, there are surprises. A naive inventor might
even think about taking any deductions, but the $25,000
immediate deduction for long-term property is a pleasent
surprise.

Customer Reviews:
Save your money!!.......2006-07-07
Getting this book is no longer important anymore. With the technology of the internet, the comic book collector can now surf the internet and check out comic book sites for current prices of old comics. With the latest of the stupid CDGing where you have to put comics into a sealable plastic shell so you can't take it out to read..............
Accurate pricing trends.......2005-04-06
Glad to see that the Guide is still correcting the overpricing that has plagued editions of this book in the past. Of course, dealers will be upset to see this downward correction (notice the anonymous reviews signed "a reader"). But for the comic buyer, this is a step away from greed and towards making comic book collecting an affordable hobby again.
It's good to have the guide moving ever closer towards accuracy, and not have to judge value by the outlandish prices occasionally seen on eBay which unrealistically skew the average price upwards. These eBay buyers are either uninformed (a dealer's dream), or they have unlimited funds and are bidding aginst another person in the same situation. These sales, however, have NOTHING to do with the book's actual value, which is determined by supply and the mean demand. One or two people who are willing to pay 10 times a book's value, shouldn't have an effect on the pricing for the rest of the comic collecting community.
The Overstreet Guide is an important tool for the hobbyist who wants to have an accurate guide for a comic book's worth. Unfortunately comic book collecting has become a HUGE business, and dealers used to gigantic markups don't want to lose these profit margins. They will continue to fight against the trend towards downward correction in Overstreet. Buyer Beware. The comic you want is out there somewhere at a fair price. Take your time and look around. And of course, get a copy of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide!!!
Trimmed back, seriously incomplete.......2004-07-20
I have bought many of Overstreet's Price Guide issues, including every one of the first twenty years. Every year it became more and more accurate and comprehensive and I depended on it to give me details on almost every comic in existence including underground comics and limited editions.
I got out of the comics scene for a while and then decided to start selling some of my old collection I didn't read much any more, so I bought the most recent issue.
I was shocked! Except for the most common titles, most issues I had weren't even listed! Even issues like Mickey Mouse Album #1 from 1962 was missing. Where there had been several columns of listings per page, there were now only two, to make room for a completely unnecessary breakdown of prices by conditions so fine that it's laughable.
I find it hard to figure out whom this book is supposed to serve. If the book you're researching is at all rare, then you would like to see it in this book, not find out that it's too rare to bother with.
With the huge numbers of advertisements in the book, the price is outrageous!
Sorry, I can't recommend it for ANYONE who is a serious comics fan.
Poor pricing information.......2004-07-17
As a previous reviewer noted, some of the pricing in this edition is ludicrous. Prices of comics that continue to spiral upward have been marked down? What is the problem with Overstreet?
The truth is that historically Overstreet and other price guides have always based many comic prices in large part on educated or even uneducated guesses. But now the comic buyer or seller can go directly to the definitive authority on the subject-Ebay. When a comic is selling on Ebay for $500 in VF and Overstreet says it's worth $200 in VF, Overtreet is just plain wrong.
False prices- This edition is a joke...dont waste your money.......2004-05-21
Look carefully in this edition and you will see that most prices have gone DOWN, which is a joke. It states that an Amazing Spider-man #1 in VF goes for $500 less than last year, which is a joke. Try finding a good deal on EBAY. Fantastic Four #48, the 1st silver surfer, use to fly on EBAY for discount prices, now low grades sell at book prices easy and mid-to high grades above...and the price has dropped in this "price guide". If you look carefully most mid to mid-high grades have gone down in this book across the board. Last I looked the comic business was booming, when talking to all sellers and comparing ebay sales. This book is a joke and it's time for a new "definitve priceguide" Dont waste your hard earned money here. Overstreet should be ashamed.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of supplies needed!.......2007-06-09
I bought this book because I am interested in collage. My interest lies mostly in ATCs (artist trading cards), and I was hoping to find some techniques here that I could scale down and use.
There are lots of nice examples and instructions, but I found myself getting overwhelmed in some sections. Plus, I would probably have to buy a lot of supplies for some of the projects (especially the ones that involve soldering). I've read through much of the book, and I'm trying to remember what I liked and didn't like about it. What I've realized is that the projects must not be all that memorable (at least not to me) because few examples come to mind!
I suppose, for inspiration, it's an okay book to have. And if you're looking at doing three-dimensional collages or other altered artwork, it's just fine. It just wasn't quite what I was looking for.
Collages.......2007-05-17
This is a very informative book dealing with making different projects out of found items. The book gives great direction and lists supplies and tools that will be needed.
I received it within a week of ordering it.

Beautiful and inspiring.......2007-02-19
This book is lovely. The photos are clear and the instructions are as well. It is a great resource for making something different. There are many ideas and finished products to jump-start your imagination. Nicely laid out and balanced with instructions and photos.

Book Description
Discover how to recreate and restore authentic period architecture, furnishings and detailing in the Victorian Gothic style.
As Linda Osband demonstrates in this fact-filled volume, the Gothic Revival caught the fancy of many Victorians who sought refuge in supposedly simpler days. Picturesque castles and cathedrals with spiky towers, high-gabled roofs and medieval ornament provided just the escape needed from all the rigours and gritty reality of the industrial revolution.
A celebration of one of the most exuberant styles of the period, Victorian Gothic House Style provides the ideal source of inspiration and reference for anyone wishing to re- create or preserve Gothic houses and interiors with style and confidence, by combining specially commissioned photographs and extensive source material from contemporary catalogues with informative and practical text.
Accompanied by an historical appreciation of the period in architecture and interiors, as well as through its influential designers, there is practical information on re-creating the effect plus a comprehensive list of stockists and suppliers.
Linda Osband has edited many books on a wide range of non-fiction subjects and has complied an anthology of Victorian travellers. she is also the author of the successful Victorian House Style, also published by David & Charles. Linda lives in London.

Book Description
With its admirable purity of design and skillful crafting, Victorian Gothic took its cue from medieval ecclesiastical buildings in northern Europe. Through this highly illustrated source--with over 500 photographs, some from original catalogues and others specially commissioned--anyone can recreate the feel of a 19th century Gothic revival style home. From steeply pitched roofs topped by turrets, towers, and chimney-stacks to beautiful natural materials to intricate carvings, every detail will fascinate and inspire.

Victorian Gothic House Style.......2001-07-19
Linda Osband has done an admirable job of collecting images from England and the United States to help illustrated the Gothic Revival Movement. What she falls short on in text she makes up for in picture and engravings. It is not as comprehensive as I was hoping and there are some areas that I would have appreciated a more in-depth explanation: facades and furniture that identify the period being top of the list. The samples she has for gothic kitchens are modern but she supplements them with appliance advertisements from the 1870s-1890s. This helps identify what was used during this time, not necessarily practical now. She also incorporates the use of advertisements for tile samples and patterns that were available as well as ironwork. She covers all aspects of Gothic Revival from the outside to the interior to the furniture to the conservatory. Overall, there are some good ideas and good reading to be found if you are planning on restoring a residence or creating a period dollhouse. Highly recommend.

This practical, mini-guide teaches you quick-fire methods that will have you creating Mind Maps in minutes, to maximize your brainpower and improve your creativity.
Customer Reviews:
Fluffy Bunny Rabbits are Smarter.......2005-04-27
This book is about the most ridiculous sales hype I have read. I understand that some graphic devices can be useful at specific times and in specific tasks, but this book more or less preaches and preaches that it should be used to bring the galaxy together hand in hand in harmony.
The "theory" used to explain its efficacy is both wrong and gives a wrong impression of this limited technique. The left right brain myths are used as a convenient concept that fits perfectly to market the mind map (there is an obvious left and right). It all falls to pieces when you realize the brain does not actually work like a mind map at all!
But carrying the book about with you like a bible, in the delusion that "THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE" is probably less useful than carrying a sink plunger everywhere you go. If you have a strong faith in sink plungers, the effect will be even stronger. I mean, the book is written like evangelism, and only evangelists will enjoy it. Thinkers will not.
This book is about getting more people to buy into the Buzan book series. Lots of promises that are not going to appear in reality, even when the last Buzan title is bought. Use the plunger and unblock that mental blockage.
If you want to improve abilities, avoid hype, and go for a good study methods book that has a good wide range of strategies and well researched psychology, rather than spider diagramming yourself into left/right guru worship.
Keep an open mind, and don't let the Buzan hype limit your options.
Regards
Reynal
Hype and nonsense.......2005-04-27
This book is wrong about the brain, and is wrong to hype mind mapping into every task in the universe. The left/right brain info is just myth, the 1% brain use stuff is just myth. The newer stuff on multiple intelligences is just rhetoric (he keeps adding intelligences as he goes along, blowing with the wind).
People have been using graphic organizers for centuries. Tony Buzan only originated the hype. Here is similar hype that led to some litigation (by a different author).
http://www.quackwatch.org/02ConsumerProtection/FTCActions/trudeau.html
Best to stick with learning/communication methods that actually are appropriate for the task.

Perfect Gift for An Open Mind.......2003-05-31
Mind mapping is a powerful tool. It has helped me in many ways, remembering material for exams, planning for future, preparing for presentation, or more. I do agree with the previous reviewer that most of the material on this book can be found on internet. I have downloaded much info for mind map myself. But which book is so original that you cannot find any piece (concrete of conceptional) of it from internet? Besides, excellently edited/organized color pages, like children's books, are always pleasant, isn't it?
To promote the tool of mind map, a tiny book like this is an excellent gift idea. How many of you have friends who do not use internet? How many of you have friends who use internet, but cannot find the information he/she needs? How many of you have friends who simply do not believe what they see on the screen? How many of you read electric-shock-proof material in bathroom? How many of you want to give a gift that can ultimately change the recipient's life? This is it!!!
You can carry it to work, baseball games, or picnic. This book can easily slip into your pocket and provide good reference to the methodology of mind map when needed. This book can also serve as an anchor on your book shelf to remind you constantly the value of mind map. I cannot see the reason why you should not have it as a gift...even if you know this method by heart like I do...
Give this book to family members, co-workers, students, relatives, and any one you care about. The mind map methodology may be the one thing they need today to suceed!
Not Necessary.......2003-02-02
The information in this book can be obtained online, and the preaching you can live without. Mind mapping is pretty intuitive. Once you see one you will say "I get it" and start using them. There is simply not enough information to go on and on about them in multiple books. I thought maybe I was missing something. Now I feel like I was snookered into paying for someone's info-mercial. The basic idea is good, and the binding is cute.
Book Description
"There is no book about Hollywood as riveting as this documentary." - Allan Carr, Vanity Fair There is no question that the 1954 version of A STAR IS BORN holds a special place in the pantheon of classic movies. It was director George Cukor's first foray into musicals, his first color film, and it was, without a doubt, Judy Garland's greatest screen performance. With incredible detail and color, Ronald Haver gives us the fascinating story of the making, marketing and restoration of this groundbreaking classic. Here is how producer Sid Luft orchestrated the deal for his wife, how Cukor was selected to direct, how James Mason was cast to co-star and how Moss Hart's script was developed. Here are the myriad techincal problems, the clashes of personalities and the shocking emotional ups and downs of the film's star. Here, finally, is the author's own mission to restore the film to its original length and glory in the 1980s.

Part Hollywood part Sherlock Holmes Story.......2007-08-12
What an amazing story of how the pieces of this edited masterpiece were found during a painstaking search. The story of the production of the film is riveting, but even more so is the tale of the search for the lost footage. At the end it is slightly disappointing that all of the missing pieces could not be found, but ultimately the book is a celebration because the majority of it was discovered, and in the process, the restoration of this movie served as a catalyst for many films thereafter. Well written and hard to put down once started.
One of the Very Best.......2006-12-27
Not every movie deserves a book of this quality but the movie and the book are perfect matches. What a wonderful read and I highly recommend this book to any fan of the movie, Hollywood, or student of same. Very well done.
Interesting documentary.......2006-11-06
Interesting book about the making of the movie, very detailed, but the language is not suitable for general audiences.
A wonderful study in how to "uncover" a masterpiece!.......1999-03-22
A great book by Mr. Haver, filled with facts on the making of "A Star Is Born", the masterpiece. It also shows that rumors have been wrong for many years,in blaming the high cost of filming on Ms. Garland and also why this masterpiece ended up being a disappointment at the box office, having been cut up by Warner's to appease the movie houses' demands for a shorter version so it could be run for more viewings. A shame, when you consider they would have made more if audiences had been allowed to see it in its entirety, as planned. However, we have this wonderful book to tell us and show us exactly what took place! Thank you again, Mr. Haver!

Book Description
When Henry Dunow signs up to coach his son Max's Little League team on Manhattan's Upper West Side, he finds himself thinking of his own childhood and about his father, Moishe, and what had been missing from their relationship. Moishe, a Yiddish writer who had recently fled Hitler's Europe, was not a typical postwar dad. Though a tender and loving father, he considered recreation like playing catch with his son narishkeit, "foolishness." Such rites of an all-American boyhood as Little League and the world of sports were utterly foreign in Henry’s cloistered family.
Determined to be a different kind of parent to his first grader, Dunow bumbles through a self-test of fatherhood on the scruffy fields of New York's Riverside Park, playing coach, cheerleader, father, and friend to a ragtag bunch of seven-year-olds, many of whom are discovering baseball for the first time. His Galaxies are a varied lot-from one dreamy little boy who never stops talking to himself in the outfield, and another who has recently suffered a tragic loss and is angry at the world, to one who needs to be pointed in the direction of first base every time he's lucky enough to hit the ball.
The Way Home is the affecting and ironic story of Dunow's journey of discovery as he watches his relationship with Max evolve over the course of a Little League season. With the warmth and humor of a natural storyteller, Dunow recounts the antics of the Galaxies and shares keen observations about parenthood, Jewishness, urban life, and the culture of competition among men and boys. Along the way, he explores the difficult separation from his father and the choices he made in life that Moishe did not understand. He finds that what most renews the feeling of connection with his father-even long after he is gone-is the experience of becoming a father himself.
The Way Home is a touching story of a man trying to understand what it means to be a father even as he is still coming to terms with what it meant to be a son. It will speak to anyone striving to savor what is most precious and fleeting in family life.
Customer Reviews:
OY VEY. this guy is an AGENT?.......2004-01-21
God help those writers who Dunow is giving advice to. This is so sappy and self-serving you need a barf bag at your side while reading it. The writing is weak, the sentimentality suffocating, and the writer's self interest is way over the top. I am surprised that a publisher sunk their money in this; and I am angry at myself for blowing my own on one copy.
more hackneyed than an afterschool special.......2003-04-11
If you want to experience the bond between adult and child in all of its emotional breadth, put this book down and go talk to a kid.
two stories in one doesn't work.......2002-10-05
Like Dunow I decided to coach Little League to relate better to one of my son's and to make sure he got a fair shake at developing as a baseball player. Unlike Dunow I didn't get the job the first time I applied.
I found the Little League situations fascinating and related to the various players coaches, their attitudes and the situations. But it surprised me that Dunow's team improved so much without special coaching or instilling much competitiveness. I would be kind to the kids and almost never yell at them unless they weren't paying attention to the game while they were in the field. Dunow took a very gentle, kind and noncompetitive approach which worked surprisingly well. Even the problem kid Dylan came around in the end.
I was very interested in the Little League story and the fact that his son Max was a baseball trivia nut, knowing everything about the Yankees and his idol Derek Jeter. I was a lot that way as a child too. But Dunow alternates chapters, with one covering how he and his seven year old son progress during the Little League season followed by a chapter covering his own childhood and his relationship to his father.
I found the chapters about Little League more interesting. The switching back and forth breaks up the continuity and the two stories do not connect together very well. In the end he does do a good job of tieing his relationship with his son to his relationship to his father but the connection does not justify the style which I found disconcerting.
Both stories by themselves could make for interesting books but together it doesn't work. I found myself wanting to get through the chapters about his father to get back to the chapters about his son and the Little League. Hence I only gave it 3 stars.
Poor Choice of Language for Little League Stories.......2001-08-02
Although Mr. Dunow describes some memorable times with his son through the joy of coaching his son's Little League team, his choice of language does not fit what I would expect from a father or a coach. His use of four letter expletives certainly do not fit this type of book. I would think someone of his literary background could certainly express himself far better than street talk.
The Way Home.......2001-06-30
I couldn't put the book down and didn't want it to end. Henry has a very conversational writing style that grabs your heart and involves you emotionally in his wonderful memoir. I laughed and cried my way through every page. It was an incredible journey and one I plan to experience each Father's Day. Henry has a gift and I'm glad he chose to share it with us. Read this book. You will be moved.
