A Bridge Between the Founders and the Bureaucrats.......2000-07-26

To understand why the U.S. government works, and works relatively well, a bridge of understanding is needed between the principles of the founding fathers and the massive bureaucratic machine that is the modern United States. Richard Stillman's "Creating the American State: the Moral Reformers and the Modern Administrative World They Made" provides such a bridge. Stillman builds a cogent case that seven "founders" of the modern administrative state shared and applied common Protestant values of work, duty, and idealism. These founders -- little known public officials -- essentially provided functional amendments to the theoretical skeleton of the Constitution. George William Curtis influences the adoption of a merit system over patronage. Charles Francis Adams (of the other Adams family) pioneers the sunshine commission. Jane Addams parlays her Protestant beliefs into social reforms that are ultimately rewarded with the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize. And, Frederick W. Taylor pioneers a system of scientific management that is still sending shock waves through government and industry. (Think TQM and Deming.) Combining biography and political science, Professor Stillwell provides a fascinating portrait of the emerging U.S. administrative state. Nothing to read.......2003-07-25

It looks like ISO 14001 requirements + ISO 14001 comments + a few words of own opinion + some procedures from imaginary company (It seems they have never been at work). So If you have visited any ISO 14001 course, you don't need this book.

Coming on the heels of the author's previous book on the subject, this book was a disappointment for several fundamental reasons: it does not cover the matter in detail, and the examples provided are of no real fundamental value. It would appear that someone at McGraw-Hill (the publisher) was realy asleep at the wheel to let this manuscripy go out the way it did.

Giving the book 3 stars is truly a gift.

This is a great book for cat lovers if you are looking for whimsical patterns not realistic patterns. I especially like the tesselation patterns.

I'm sure that you have a few cookbooks in your collection that you enjoy, but for some reason you never do get around to cooking from them. Maybe the ingredients are hard to get, or you have a simpler recipe in another cookbook. There's nothing wrong with those cookbooks; they're fun, pretty, inspirational. It's just a reading-cookbook rather than a regular instruction book.

To my surprise, that's how I feel about Cat's Meow: Purr-fect Quilts for Cat Lovers. As a devoted cat person, and an enthusiastic (if not anywhere near expert) quilter, I had hoped to find several quilts that would let me indulge in more than one of my passions. However, every time I flip through the pages of this book... well, I end up cooking something else for dinner, so to speak.

I'm not completely sure why; perhaps it's because the designs expect you to use a lot of scraps (I'm not a scrap quilter), or they're just an eensy bit too cutesy. It might also be that, to my mild surprise, none of the designs are suited to use all the kitty fabrics that I've been collecting. Probably, the main reason that I haven't felt compelled to use any of these designs is that the instructions aren't completely clear; it doesn't give me a sense of confidence that this will come together sensibly.

I don't dislike the book; it deserves its 4 stars, and I've no intention of giving it away. On the other hand, I'm not worrying that I'll wear out the book's binding.

This book is SO CUTE! Even if you don't make a quilt from it, it makes you feel good just looking through it. The colors are happy and the patterns aren't hard. Good instructions and designs and inspiration from Janet Kime! It's one of my top five favorite quilt books--I love it!

Great Book.......2002-06-24

The book was very insightful into Enrique's life. The early chapters of his life, with his mother and father, give a small explanation as to why Enrique is the way he is today. I believe the authors took some liberties in trying to explain what he was feeling, only Enrique knows that. But overall a decent book about his early life and what made him into the man he is today. After reading this book I have a greater respect and admiration for Enrique. I am now a fan for life.

A good book.......2000-04-14

I've been a fan of Enrique Iglesias's for a while but this book gave me some information about him that I didn't know before. I was surprised at how the book went into great detail about his father's life at the beginning, but it was interesting to learn a bit about Enrique's family history. The only thing that bothered me about the book was the authors acted like they knew what Enrique was feeling just by using some of his quotes. I think they used a lot of speculation. The only person who really knows what he was feeling during certain moments in his life is Enrique himself. Other than that, if you want to learn basically everything there is to know about Enrique and his career, I definitely recommend this book.

Heart Warming Tale of a NiNo who lived so much so young.......2000-03-30

Overall the book was specific and breathtaking. However I must say I did not enjoy reading Enrique's father biography in the first chapter. Perhaps the next book could be specific and mention the same on the cover. I felt it should have giving alot more attention to Enrique's(specivically in the first chapter)life as an artist and less of his personnal life. But any information or insight his fans get will make them appreciate more his incredible talent as a singer. Afterall it is inherited. This book was very insightful and revealed a lot about Enrique's personality that people would otherwise not know. He's a true talent and an admirable human being, and I'm his fan for life.
