But the world needs people like you, who have understanding for other meanings and believes. Your stories are short but do have a deeper meening and are somethimes very sad. Jacob Rosen's book is hilarious, as well as serious
in parts, giving an insight into the peoples of the
Middle East.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to
know and understand the different nations living side
by side, who do not even understand themselves!

daily lives of the average person in the Middle East
and which should be read by and be on the bookshelves
of every home and book shop in the region.

Jacob Rosen, a seasoned diplomat writes a serious, but entertaining book about his experiences in the diplomatic world which takes him on assignments throughout the Arab world. A collection of short stories that at times can be very amusing and at others, quite thought provoking. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get a better understanding of the Arab-Israeli conflict throughan unreported look at the culture and every day life of Arabs and Israelis.

A thoughtful collection from a variety of viewpoints........2003-04-19
Not just "there I was in a whiteout" stories, although those are in there. The sixteen pieces represent attempts on Everest back to the Twenties when Mallory disappeared. They are in chronological order, which is helpful because many of the writers refer to past history in their work. All but three are excerpts, but as always, carefully chosen so that you enter and exit the work without feeling confused. There are selections about the early exploration of Everest and then a detailed third-person account of the first ascent in 1953. Geoff Tabin writes about the dynamics of an expedition and the labor that goes into making even an unseccessful assualt on the mountain. Willis puts an interesting spin on the idea of "survival" by including two interesting accounts - one explaining why the previously strong bond between Messner and Habeler didn't "survive" after their 1978 triumph without oxygen, and a first person account by Maria Coffey, who after losing Joe Tasker to the mountain traveled ther with Peter Boardman's widow to find closure for her own "survival". And there are the epics: Venables' near fatal overnight bivouac on the mountain, Anatoli Boukreev's rebuttal of "Into Thin Air", which cast him in a poor light, an account from Lene Gammelgaard, a less-known participant who nearly died that brutal night in 1996, and my favorite - an emotional yet self-effacing first-person story of that same disaster by Michael Groom, one of the guides, who reflects not only on his own near-death, but the helplessness of a guide who could not save his clients: it was he (among others) who walked away from Beck Weathers and left him for dead. So all in all a great read on many aspects of Everests history, and if mountaineering gets your blood going, don't overlook the earlier series volumes"Epic", "High", and "Climb", all packed with riveting tales of death and survival from mountains around the world.

Fourth Estate Discussion at its Best.......2001-07-11
Although I have recently switched to another textbook for my Media Law class, I greatly enjoyed using as a class text Carter's First Amendment and the Fourth Estate. The text lent itself to excellent discussions in class and readily provided excellent case studies and reading material for the students. (Currently I use two texts for such diversity). My only concern is that, at an undergraduate level, the book is unclear on direction for the student not versed in legal and analytical thinking, and like all comphrehensive and advanced texts, a bit too overwhelming academically for freshmen and sophomores. I would highly recommend the text, however, for graduate studies in media law.

the 2005 edition of Beckett Almanac Of Baseball Cards And Collectibles, which even includes Canadian cards from 1912 to modern times - and coins, pins, stickers, team yearbooks and more. There are thousands of photos which lend to easy identification even in black and white, there are card grading tips and guides for beginners, and each section is introduced with a specific set of notes or collector's tips. Conclude with a glossary of hobby terms and series indexes and you have a top pick which represents a virtual 'bible' - and a must for any serious baseball card collector.
Great Reference, Why Publish The Beckett Annual?.......2003-10-17
An absolute must for the advanced collector.
This comprehensive volume combined with Krause's Annual Standard Catalog Of Baseball Cards, are the two most important tools for anyone serious about baseball card collecting.
My only gripe is Beckett simultaneously publishing their inferior 'Baseball Annual' at the same time. It's clearly inferior to their Almanac and borders on customer abuse offering a "lite" version for the ignorant just to make more money.
Still, that problem issue aside, the Almanac is a must-have if you're going take your collection to the next level.
The Bible of Baseball Cards.......2002-02-16
If you collect baseball cards you absolutely must have this book. It catalogs virtually every baseball card ever made, including variations and errors.
Why only four stars and not five? Subtle reasons, mostly. The main reason is that this book, despite being released recently, does not do a very good job of covering the professionally graded baseball card market. This is even more surprising as Beckett does have a grading service of their own. As such, the sections covering the history of baseball cards and how to grade cards is lacking and is pretty much a reprint of what's been appearing in Beckett books like this one for over fifteen years. They really could have done a better job of modernizing those sections.
However, as a reference book to help identity cards and give approximate values, this book cannot be beat. Buy it now!
It's ALL Here--Almost.......2000-09-05
This almanac continues to expand -- and become better. Each year, it has added more sets, more details and more areas of collectibles. It is about to ``outgrow'' its covers. But that will be a long-range bonus for collectors. Beckett and able company will be forced to split the book, probably taking out minor league cards. The editors have become particularly adept at adding team-issued sets. A complete checklist of McCarthy baseball cards -- rumored for No. 6 -- would be a great addition. The only improvement I would like to see would be for more details on some sets and certain variations in a set (how to tell them apart). If you are a serious collector of baseball items, this is one of the few MUST books for your book shelf. And it's getting better and better with each edition.

"Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Houses," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of mini-books dedicated to the work of this important architect. This volume focuses on Wright's Prairie Houses. As Lind notes, the Prairie School of architecture was inspired by the "spacious, horizontal feeling" of the American prairie. This book pays particular attention to several of Wright's Prairie masterpieces built between 1900 and 1908.
This book shares many of the admirable characteristics of other volumes in the series: a profusion of superb full-color photographs (both interior and exterior), Lind's interesting text, illuminating sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a brief but useful bibliography. Houses pictured include the Bradley House of Kankakee, Illinois; the Darwin Martin House of Buffalo, New York; the Stockman House of Mason City, Iowa; and many more.
The only flaw in the book is the lack of any legible floor plans. Although floor plans are not a focus of this series as a whole, author Lind does call attention to the distinctive features of the Prairie House floor plans several times in the text. Thus, one or two representative plans would have really enhanced this volume. Actually, one floor plan is included, but it is used merely as a decorative background element: the plan is printed in a pale blue ink and has text superimposed on top of it, so it is not very legible. This matter aside, however, this is a fine volume in an excellent series.

Although the entire Wright at a Glance Series is wonderful, this book is especially good. It gives good examples of what made Wright's Prairie home distinctive. The photographs are very fine and the text supports them well.

Like the book and movie Pay It Forward, this book has the power to change lives and most of all, communities. Through 2-3 page interviews of Lopez Islanders, the reader's heart is connected to the richness of life. I like this book very much. First of all, it is difficult to buy this book in my country. On the other hand, most people in my country know Moody but not Sankey. It is way for me to understand the supporter of Moody. This is a nice book.

This book is one of great help for those involved either directly with the church's music program, or through music evangelism. Sankey's biography and many of the hymns which were used in the days of Evangelist D. L. Moody are found throughout this collection.
It is always interesting to get a context, if not the actual history, of a song in its inception--especially when this comes directly from a contemporary writer, be that the author and/or the composer. Many songs found in this work (given only by text, no music included) will take on a different perspective when the reader understands the author and/or composer's background--as well as some historic circumstances or the given incidents/occasions which prompted the hymn to be written.
I would recommend this book without hesitation for church music students and those involved in music ministry. For me, once I pick it up, I have a hard time laying it back down--or returning it to the library from which I have borrowed the book! It is a book which I wish I had for my personal use in my own library.

Ruth Jacobsen spent her first childhood in Germany. It ended one night when she was six years old and hiding in terror as she watched people being thrown from windows. It was Kristallnacht, the Night of Breaking Glass.
Her family fled and found haven in the idyllic Dutch village of Oud Zuylen. There Ruth became a child again.
When she was eight, the Germans invaded Holland. When she was nine, her grandmother was put on a train and never seen again. Soon she was wearing a Jewish star on her coat. When she was 10, she was separated from her parents. Frightened and alone, she went from house to house, hiding from the Nazis in the homes of strangers. Ruth Jacobsen's childhood was over forever. For the rest of her life she tried to forget her loss.
One day, forty years after the war, she opened an album of family photographs that had lain in a box at the bottom of a closet, untouched.
"My fear had always been that I would break down or become hysterical," she writes. Instead, she transformed the images into art, creating a series of vivid collages that pieced together her shattered childhood. As she worked, long suppressed memories came to the surface. She wrote them down.
The result is a unique document of a life and a time.
Rescued Images combines Ruth's collages and her moving memoir of the wrenching events of a half century ago. Young Ruth Jacobsen is brought back to life on these pages: frightened and bewildered, buffeted by forces she cannot understand or control, bending but never breaking.

People of my generation or younger, born after the mid nineteen-sixties, are caught in a strange place when it comes to learning about, and relating to, the events in World War II Europe. We come too late for direct experience, yet before the greater distance of the generation following us. In a sense, we will, if we are thinking people, shoulder the task of passing on the facts, impressions, and enormous lessons from this period, but without first-hand knowledge. "Rescued Images" is a remarkable book which should do much to provide us with a tool which is both entertaining (as extraordinary as that may seem) and profoundly moving. Jacobsens gentle, yet strong voice, is made even stronger by her montages, which are simultaneously beautiful as they are emotionally raw. When she is old enough I will sit with my daughter and we will read this book together, in honor of the triumph of the human spirit, and in memory of the worst of human failings. Parents and schools should add this volume to their shelves, it will remain timeless.
