    Book Description

Frontier Classics resurrect long out-of-print gems of frontier history. Antiquarian and rare book dealers have previously been the only source for these books, providing first editions for premium prices. Now, these books are available in affordable, quality paperback editions, with new historical introductions written by leading experts in the field.

Fincelius G. Burnett was born in Missouri in 1844, and had a long, thrilling career on the upper Plains and northern Rockies, initially battling Indians and later befriending them. His days as an army sutler at Forts Phil Kearny and C. F. Smith on the "Bloody Bozeman" Trail coincided with the infamous Fetterman Massacre. He later formed a lasting friendship with Washakie, the famous Shoshone chief, and Sacajawea, of Lewis and Clark fame.

    5 out of 5 stars Finn Burnett.......2006-01-14

This is a reprint edition of the 1937 first edition, published by the Arthur H. Clark Company. It tells the life of Fincelius G. Burnett, better known as Finn, who became a much-traveled frontiersman and Indian fighter and later a true friend of the peoples he skirmished so often with.

Finn left his home state of Missouri for the West in an attempt to avoid getting drafted into the Union army. He became a teamster on the 1865 Connor Powder River expedition, witnessing the hanging of Oglala chiefs Two Face and Black Foot at Ft. Laramie, which set off a rash of white-Sioux hostilities. The expedition reached the Powder River country of Wyoming, where Ft. Connor (later Reno) was established. He participated in a number of skirmishes with the Sioux, usually as a member of Frank North's Pawnee Scouts throughout the summer and fall of 1865. In 1866 he helped build Ft. Kearny on the Bozeman Trail, and was there during the Fetterman massacre (he was on the detail that retrieved the dead bodies). He participated in the Hayfield Fight near Ft. C.F. Smith in 1867, and then changed hats from Indian fighter to gold miner during the South Pass gold rush. It was during this time that he forged a friendship with the Shoshone chief Washakie, becoming the agricultural agent at Ft. Washakie; it was also here that he befriended Sacajawea, the famous woman who was with Lewis and Clark (some dispute this was the same Sacajawea). He settled on a ranch west of Lander, WY, a gift from Washakie, and died at the age of 90 in 1934.

Beebe's account of Burnett's life is robust and (to use a term that would've been perfectly acceptable back in 1937 when the book was published) "manly." It's straightforward and concerned with getting the facts right and allowing them to speak for themselves. Anyone interested in affairs of the High Plains West, especially during the 1860s-80s, should find this book worthwhile.

Biographer Robert Beebe David provides the reader with a straightforwardly narrated account in Finn Burnett, Frontiersman, the biography of an extraordinary pioneer of the American frontier. In the upper Plains and northern Rockies, Finn Burnett was at first a staunch battler against Indians, but later befriended them, including famous individuals such as Washakie, the Shoshone chief, and Sacajawea, known for her role in the Lewis and Clark expedition. Part of the Stackpole Books "Frontier Classics Series", Finn Burnett, Frontiersman is very highly recommended reading for students of American frontier history.

        Book Description

There are many guides to the conduct of international business transactions, but none as comprehensive and detailed as this. It clearly identifies in great depth the many sources of risk in cross-border transactions, analyzes the legal instruments that provide protection to the parties, and describes the practical means -- institutional, purchased, and negotiated -- of reducing, reallocating, and perhaps even eliminating risks. Each chapter covers a distinct element of risk, with insightful commentary on the relevant national, regional, and international laws and detailed analyses of leading and defining cases from many jurisdictions and international courts, as well as considerations of significant scholarly contributions and guidance through insurance options and matters for negotiation. Beginning with the entry-level commercial transaction and letter of credit financing, the author moves through issues of commercial law, dispute resolution, sovereign involvement, public international law, antitrust law, and taxation. Along the way, he highlights types of transaction to which host country law has special application.

The crucial issues of jurisdiction, choice of forum in dispute resolution, recognition and enforcement of judgments, foreign currency judgments, and defenses against claims of sovereign immunity all arise in context with detailed critical analysis and commentary. Other matters covered include the commercial and political risk insurance provided by such US agencies as the Export-Import Bank and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and the protection for investors offered by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), and the draft Multilateral Treaty on Investment (MAI).

With its expert application and interpretation of the relevant provisions of such important legal instruments as the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), and UNIDROIT Principles, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), this major work brings a depth and breadth of treatment to its subject matter for which the student and practitioner will search in vain elsewhere. It is certain to quickly take its place as a definitive work.

        Book Description

Offers an integrated approach to teaching managerial and financial accounting course topics for the Introductory or Principles of Accounting course. This new text, written by an experienced author team, is designed to help students understand how to use both managerial and financial accounting information to make decisions. Class-tested for three years across the United States, its student-friendly approach has already earned it rave reviews. The text provides an introduction to business in Chapter 1 and is the only introductory accounting book to have an entire chapter (Chapter 2) devoted to creative and critical thinking. A non-technical approach makes learning accounting accessible for majors and non-majors, focuses students on using accounting information for decision making, and conforms with AECC guidelines for teaching accounting. A full-chapter length appendix on the accounting cycle (debits/credits) allows instructors to implement this portion of the course anywhere they desire.

5 out of 5 stars New Direction in Managerial Accounting textbooks.......2006-02-22

Cunningham et al have added extensive coverage for the role accountants need to play in start-up companies. This is something quite new and exciting to find presented in a managerial accounting textbook. The older textbooks like Horngren were all focused on how you eliminate inefficiences found in the manufacturing process. So what do you do when much of that manufacturing is either contracted out or has moved to China?

Outside of Silicon Valley the most needed skill for accountants in new technology companies is in performing their role during the start-up period. The successful completion of this phase is assumed in the older textbooks and dealt with from chapter 10 onwards here. Horngren and others did not really prepare their students for this situation. Cunningham et al have stepped in and dealt with this emerging need in accounting education.

The authors should include more material on the nature of the accountants role in technology start-ups. Outside of Silicon Valley the accounting students are relying on people such as the authors to tell them what they might pick up from their working environment if they were working in the Valley. This certainly seems to be the case here in Israel. We have the high-tech companies, but accountants have yet to make the transition to this new way of thinking presented in this textbook.

                Book Description

Nothing sparkles quite like a diamond, and no diamond sparkles quite like one in a Tiffany setting. This lush volume celebrates the glittering world of Tiffany diamonds through its captivating history and sumptuous jewelry. John Loring recounts how Charles Lewis Tiffany was crowned the "king of diamonds" in 1848, how the firm purchased the French crown jewels in 1887, and how Tiffany introduced the engagement ring as we know it today. Intriguing and often mysterious tales of the world's famous diamonds-the Koh-i-noor, the Regent, the Sancy, and many more-embellish the text, and anecdotes about the illustrious owners of Tiffany diamonds provide a rare glimpse into the glamorous lifestyles of these privileged few. Handsomely produced with archival photographs, sketches, drawings, and new photography of antique and contemporary jewelry pieces, this exquisite volume is the ultimate read for anyone whose eye has ever been dazzled by a diamond.

This is again a great book of these scala series, just like the book of the queluz palace. The Pena palace was build at the place of an old monastery in the mid 1800's for Fernando II of Portugal. Since then is has been a beloved retreat of the royal family. The palace itself is a mix of moorish, manuelian and gothic style. The book is a beautiful compilation of good full-color photos and text. With the book you can make a visit through the palace.

"Deaf Like Me" is one of my favorite books of all time in any genre, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who comes across this page.

The book is a richly detailed autobiography of one family's struggles to grow up with deafness in mid-1960s America. As such, it provides a terrific introduction into a key moment in the history of deaf education when deaf children were still suffering from a wrong-headed emphasis on lip reading and vocalization, rather than sign language. Members of the deaf community have long heralded the book for this reason.

But "Deaf Like Me" isn't a book just for deaf people and others interested in deaf culture. To the contrary, I think, it's a book for anyone who grew up in 1960s America, and possibly for anyone who has struggled to communicate with loved ones ever.

That's because there are so many parallels between this little family's struggles to learn how to communicate with one another against a background of changing norms and great uncertainty, and the difficulties that many American families went through in the 1960s to speak with and understand one another on issues ranging from civil rights to the Vietnam war. Such struggles afflict most generations everywhere.

None of this is to suggest that I think the authors of "Deaf Like Me" intended to write a metaphorical treatise on 1960s America much less humanity. To the contrary, I believe the authors' sole focus was on the Spalding family's particular struggles. One of the authors was a trained anthropologist, and that comes through in the book's unerring attention to details as opposed to generalizations. It's these details in large part that bring the book to life.

Nonetheless, as a hearing person with no deaf family members, I found myself identifying with this book a lot. I suffered as the little girl Lynn and her parents suffered. And I rejoiced in their discovery that everyone in the family can express themselves and be understood if only they learn to "hear" one another in the different ways that each of us has to communicate.

                                  Strongly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book, But May Be Overrated.......2003-09-01

Many people find this book THE book to read in regards to a deaf child's experience (of course, that includes her family as well). And this book is very good at showing you what a hearing family goes through when a deaf child is born into it. It tells of the "typical" struggle between raising their child strictly oral or letting them sign, too.

Many doctors and therapists tell hearing parents that to allow their deaf child to sign would be to hinder their ability to speak, lipread, or progress intellectually. All of this is hogwash, but, nevertheless, that is what this book is about. What should we do with our child?

If you're looking for that kind of informative read, this book is sure to please. For me, it was just another book about the same old issue and I found myself skimming often just to get to something original. As harsh as that may sound, that's just this deafie's opinion. :v)

4 out of 5 stars Honest example of raising a deaf child in the hearing world.......2002-03-23

Deaf Like Me is a story of 2 young parents struggling to raise their deaf daughter, Lynn, in a hearing world. Written by Thomas Spradley, Lynn's father, the book begins before Lynn was born with her mother's fear of rubella. The book takes you through the fear and waiting for the pregnancy and the eventual realization of Lynn's deafness. The story is written in a simple, straightforward manner, yet conveys the emotions of the new parents. The descriptions Thomas gives are often lacking in vibrancy and inventive vocabulary, but at the same time he conveys honest, true-to-life emotion.
The first 80% of the book is focused on the Spradley's attempts to raise Lynn to succeed in the hearing world. Thomas agonizingly describes the auditory training and constant schooling that he and his wife give Lynn, only to have her barely speaking 4 words at the age of 5. The constant movement of the family portrays varying experiences that Lynn and her parents go through as they try to teach her lip-reading and speech. It is not until the last 2 chapters that the Spradleys finally realize that communication with their daughter is more important than their dreams for her success as a `normal' hearing person and begin teaching her sign. These last two chapters show Lynn's character developing its own independent personality. Lynn also begins to explore a new deaf culture that neither her nor her parents have any experience.
My fault with the book as that I feel it ends just as the story becomes interesting. The eighteen chapters of oralism, which are shocking and disturbing, are painful lesson in futility. An impatient reader would most certainly give up on the book after the seemingly thousands of failed attempts at oralism. The dedicated reader however, is rewarded with touching moments of a family that finds its `normalcy' through the common language of sign.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Book.......2001-12-06

Tell-alls by parents of disabled kids is a genre now, but when Deaf Like Me first was published, it was an unusual book for the market. The story is of the Spradley family, and daughter Lynn, who is one of many children born Deaf in the US in the late sixties and early seventies, the result of an epidemic of Rubella (German Measles).

At the time Lynn's deafness was diagnosed, the common wisdom among hearing professionals was that children born deaf should not be exposed to any kind of sign language, and instead should receive intensive tutoring, even as infants, in speaking and speechreading. Although the tide would turn soon, the Spradleys had no way of anticipating that; they embarked on an odyssey of trying to teach Lynn to speak, and with a hearing aid, and by watching intently, to appear to listen as a hearing child.

After many years of pouring words into Lynn, with the promise from the experts that one day Lynn would finally pour the words back out, the Spradleys are frustrated with not being able to talk to their daughter. Lynn is several years old, and becoming a discipline problem.

Then one day, the Spradleys meet a five year old, signing Deaf child, a child who not only communicates with her parents, but makes jokes. The Spradleys are forced to reconsider years of expert advice balanced against one little girl who can talk to her parents, where their daughter cannot.

How the Spradleys learn to stand on their own, and disregard the experts, even in the face of some heavy censure, is the story of heroism. This is a book to own, because you will want to return to it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing true story!!!.......2001-02-28

This is an amazing story of a family who strugles when they realize that their little girl is deaf. The story they tell is so true of so many hearing parents of deaf children (90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents). I am a student at Northern Illinois Universtiy and am studying to become a teacher for deaf children. The whole time that I read this book I just kept saying to myself. LET HER SIGN!!! They it made me laugh when all the parents came together and started to talk about the behavior problems their children had. I sat back and said to myself.."do you think it is because they can't communicate what they want and are frustrated?" This is a must read for any parent of a deaf baby!!!!

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in deaf studies or who has a deaf child. It shows all the emotional levels what hearing parents with a deaf child goes through (the feeling of not understanding deafness, thinking the child has limitations, and the list goes on and on and on...). I read this book in a few days and could not lay it down. I recommend this book to everyone I come into contact when talking about really good books.

Broyles-Gonzalez concludes the volume with an extended essay on the significance of Mendoza's career and her place in Tejana music and Chicana studies. Known as a lone artist and performer, Lydia Mendoza's voice and twelve-string guitar-playing figure prominently in her ability to both nurture and transmit the vast oral tradition of popular Mexican song with beauty and integrity. She sang the songs of the people across generations in the old tradition; all are indigenous to the Americas, and many of them to Texas. It is the music that emerged from the experiences of native peoples (on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border) within the colonial context of the nineteenth century. Mendoza's prominence and stature as a Chicana idol stems from her sustained presence and perpetual visibility within a complex network of social and cultural relations in the twentieth century. Along with being one of the earliest female recording and touring artists, she is loved as a voice of working-class sentimiento, sentiment and sentience, through song, which is one of the most cherished of Chicana/o cultural art forms. Through her vast repertoire and unmistakable interpretive skill in the shaping of songs she is a living embodiment of U.S.-Mexican culture and a participant in raza people's protracted struggles for survival.

Anatol and Avital Scharansky are two great heroes of modern Jewish history. Her efforts to secure the release of her husband from Soviet captivity were courageous and wise. Her husband the great human- rights activist Anatoly Scheransky became the symbol for the world of the movement for free immigration from the Soviet Union. This story tells of one of the great moments of modern Jewish history, the release of Anatoly (Natan) from the Soviet prison and his coming home to make a new life with Avital in Jerusalem.

5 out of 5 stars A story of love and heroism .......2004-12-20

This book was written by Avital Scheransky with the help of Ilana Ben-Joseph at the height of the struggle for the liberation of Soviet Jewry's leading dissenter Anatoly Scheransky. Scheransky was then confined in a Soviet prison while his wife and the future mother of his children was already in Israel. She tells in the book of their first meetings, her own struggle to find her Jewish identity, the struggle of the movement for free emigation within the Soviet Union. It is a moving and heroic story , which surprisingly had a happy ending with their re- uniting in Israel and going on to make a new life and build a family there.
