Through this lightening-paced account of what life inside a Mexican prison is really like, we relive with him the dramatic events leading up to his arrest and "trial" in Mexico City; his first hand confrontation with beatings, filth, rape, and extortion; his refusal to "cooperate" with prison commandos...a refusal that resulted in violent torture and a near-fatal stabbing. The engrossing narrative then takes the reader deeper and deeper inside this "inescapable" prison and its politics as Dwight describes the behind-the-scenes events Americans never hear of: a U.S. Embassy spokesman on the take from a Mexican lawyer; a corrupt network of U.S. trained narcotics agents with lucrative "connections" of their own; and a group of some 500 American prisoners, many of whom epitomize the plight of the stoned generation..passive, dependent, inarticulate, and in Dwight's words, "doped to the eyelids". Best spa book ever!!.......2001-07-28

I can't tell you how often I have used this book in the year I've owned it. It describes every major spa in the US and Mexico so well. The categories is uses to classify are great. I've sent copies to several friends so we can plan getaways together. Even if you just want to fantasize about going to a spa, it's a great reference.

Fodor's Healthy Escapes.......2000-07-19

I purchased this book based on previous experience with Fodor's books. The categories were helpful for a quick determination of the type of facility. The descriptions however seemed more like advertisements from the various facilities rather than informed experiences from the writers. The rates were not up to date and there are no web sites listed. Unbelievable for a travel book published in 2000!

Complete and well organized "healthy" vacation info.......1998-07-24

This was my first travel book. I wanted to find a vacation with structured outdoor activities where I could also keep up with my regular workout.

This book provides extensive information about many kinds of resorts and vacation programs. It is indexed by location as well as vacation/program type. It is very easy to compare one place to another. Each was described by a few free form paragraphs, followed by a list of specific info that was provided for every resort. Descriptions of the different programs were very useful. Pricing information seemed to be current (this year) and descriptions accurate when I contacted individual programs.

A minor detail, but this book is paperback, sized 5 by 9 inches. It was easy to carry around while I was deciding.

Some shortcomings are it has no photos - not one. It also doesn't list web sites, which many resorts now have. I used the book in conjunction with what I found on the web, so these inconveniences were minor.

This is a ! reference I will likely use for years to come.

The stories they tell are stories that come from the heart. They share how their challenges, physical, emotional or spiritual, touched and gave them more confidence to take on more challenges. They learned "they can do it" with the right attitude and desire to succeed.

The young women featured in this book can be an inspiration for many young readers. Young people are capable of making a difference in their lives as well as the lives of others. This is demonstrated in this book.

The book ends with a sequential listing of significant accomplishments women have made througout history. This provides a nice reminder that women have been accomplishing amazing things for hundreds of years, and will continue to as we strengthen their character and confidence. This is an enjoyable book for women of all ages to read.

Authentic Voice of Adventurous Young Women.......2000-11-23

This collection gives the reader an ear to the authentic voices of young women who confronted their personal and socially-imprinted limitations in a wide range of circumstances. While nature often provides the backdrop and circumstances of challenge, the stories are really about struggles with teamwork and inner demons. A very good collection, and what I hope is an increasingly important "genre", from persons deserving praise, guidance, mentoring, and finally, gratitude for setting down their stories.

Aventures and Challenges: Real Life Stories by Girls and Young Women is a great book! Very inspirational! The stories in the book make you want to just get up and make your own adventures. There was one story that really stood out to me, Solo by Frieghter to South America by Nellie Kelly. While traveling with people she didn't know, she conquered her fear of being alone and saw things that most people might never see. This book helps you conquer any fear that you might have about making your own adventure by helping you plan your own adventure step by step. This book is also unique because it gives you a timeline of what women have accomplished throughout the years. Adventures and Challenges is great for all ages!

Greenfield's Ending a Letdown.......2004-02-27

Michael Greenfield makes an admirable attempt build to expose the reading public to a new type prose that utilizes many different conflicts and characters while also detailing much technical information regarding the law. However, Greenfield apparently has bit off more than he can chew since his novel simply does not tie his many expository strands together in a satisfying ending.
The reader is exposed to hundreds of characters and businesses that have all been involved in separate disputes regarding their separate consumer transactions, but these individual consumer never unite for love or conversation or play or any other type of meaningful exchange. Greenfield seems to view the world as one where people are atomized and isolated. He shows how they communicate through complex and impersonal legal and commercial systems. The reader is left waiting to see if any particular persons are able to use the human spirit in order to break out of this Foucault-esque prison of a society and interact live together in a deeper way.
However, Greenfield offers now such hope. The novel's ending leaves the characters where Greenfield found them: alone and caught in the tangle of a complex, bureaucratic world. While Greenfield may one day fully articulate the themes he draws on in "Consumer Transactions", he right now offers no more than a cynical, mechanical worldview that leaves both his readers and characters both unfulfilled.

Outstanding, well researched book set.......2006-08-21

Often it is difficult to get accurate, well documented information on traditional crafts and handwork. Much of that art form was passed down from generation to generation with very little written record. Deborah Harding has done a wonderful job of finding old newpaper and magazine articles on Redwork, as well as fantastic old patterns reproduced here. A friend of mine loaned me this set of books, and I could never bring myself to return them to her, so I knew I had to have my own set!

Outstanding -- Well Worth the Price!.......2001-06-28

This book would make a lovely gift for anybody interested in textile arts, even for someone with little or no quilting or embroidery experience. The presentation is lovely -- two nicely bound, wonderfully illustrated books nestled inside a snug cardboard jacket. One book features a short discussion of redwork embroidery along with illustrations of exquisitely executed quilts. The other supplies brief instructions (perhaps too brief -- especially the section on transferring the patterns)and a lovely collection of redwork patterns so that readers can create their own redwork quilt. My only quarrel with the book is that a beginner (like me!) might not feel confident with the brief instructions. However, a quick trip to the fabric store to talk to a knowledgable salesperson should dispel any doubts. Despite this small problem, I give the book 5+ stars -- it was great fun to browse through, then to read intently , then to pore over as I selected possible designs for my very first quilt!

Red & White.......2000-10-04

Once again Deborah Harding shares a piece of history with us. Her beautifully organized and prodigiously researched book on redwork quilts is a welcome addition to any quilt lovers library. It seems that no stone was left unturned in her search to bring us a comprehensive documentation of this needleart. I recommend this two volume book to anyone interested in quilts. Not only is it a lovely publication to look at, but it educates us in an area of quilting that little has been written about. Bravo Deborah!

Finally...The Truth About Hank Williams.......2002-01-28

Hank Williams said very little about his life outside of his haunting lyrics. Since he left so few interviews behind, there were plenty of people who were willing to fill in the gaps with their own self-serving myths. Bill Koon slices through all of these myths to find the truth of Hank Williams' life. Hank has been portrayed as a saint and a sinner, but Koon shows that Williams was somewhere in between. Overall, he was a troubled man with natural talent, and this well-written book clearly shows that. Hank Williams, So Lonesome, is a triumph, and Bill Koon should be applauded for doing such a fine job. I highly recommend it.
