Good patterns -- bad book design.......2006-01-28

This book has adorable, as-yet-untried-by-me, knitting patterns, but one of the worst designs I have seen. The front of the book has lovely photos of each pattern clumped together with text on them in big letters which gives the name of the design and "See Page such and such," which, in many cases fade into the photo. The bigger problem arises when you are looking at the pattern, which tells you the number of the page of the photo -- but the photo pages are not paginated at all which makes that useless and makes you have to count backwards from the first pattern page (page 36).

Cute Patterns- Bad Instructions.......2001-04-03

I made the pig booties which certainly turned out cute. However, the pattern lacked a tension gauge (which is as fundamental as needle size) and didn't have any diagrams to show the knitter how to piece the body of the bootie together. Her patterns are really adorable and I would buy the book again. But if it ever gets into reprint adjustments should be made.

A friend of mine has a cute 2 year old and she knit the barnyard duck sweater for him. (This kid was leaning out of his stroller at 3 months of age, waiting to see the ducks on the river that runs through the center of town. He'd go wild when he saw them. Unbelievable. )

The slippers are so cute, you want to wear them too.

My only caution is that to get these darling designs, you need to knit intarsia. This is the method where you use a small bobbin or ball of color for the design patches and you do not strand as you do with fair-isle type knitting. That takes some practice. There are some good instruction books available to help you learn this useful and gorgeous technique.

Don't let fear of intarsia stop you. These sweaters are small projects because they are kiddie-sized and boy are they EVER cute. Enjoy.

I LOVE this book. As a mother of two small children, a boy and a girl, I am always looking for books that have many cute options for either gender. Not only does this book have that, but I find this collection to be extraordinary. There is a duck all-in-one that is SO cute, barnyard animals to knit and the most adorable cow, pig and hen slippers that you could ever find. I love Debbie Bliss' other books as well, but this one is probably my all time favorite. Many of the knits are done in primary or other vivid colors and involve intarsia knitting. But even if you don't love intarsia there will be cute options for you (fair isle, texture knitting). I am really glad that I decided to splurge on yet another Debbie Bliss book - it has been well worth it!

good for beginners.......2007-01-26

First 53 pages are a workbook of instructions for the beginning knitter. All the yarns are from Cascade. Patterns are well done with schematics for each. My favorite is the aran pullover. The tied sweater or kimono is also nice. Several baby blankets are also included and a few toys. Print and binding are fine and babies are very cute. If you're an advanced knitter, you probably can find better patterns elsewhere but I give it 4 stars because it accomplishes what it set out to do and it's my mistake that I bought it.

I Kept My Knitting Needles!.......2006-09-26

I ordered Elanor Lynn's delightful knitting book as a gift for a friend who is a new Grandma. While wrapping it I read the whole book cover to cover during a summer I was busy downsizing my home and moving into a small apartment. The delicious photos of healthy, happy infants and toddlers, the inviting styles combined with the instructions in the friend to friend voice of Elanor reminded me of the fun I used to have knitting. I moved my needles from the "give-away" pile and started a swing coat and hat for a baby a neighbor is expecting. I am so grateful to Elanor for writing this book so that I and others can benefit from her knowledge and creativity. Knitting is such a peaceful activity I tuck in my bag and take with me during the many unexpected moments of waiting. She says knitting can change the world, it certainly change my perception of it!

Adorable projects, easy directions, great book.......2006-03-23

I've already made 3 projects from this book and have to say that it's fantastic. The directions are very clear (and are written so you can knit by measuring and NOT counting every row), which is incredibly convenient. The projects are adorable, without being cheesy or ridiculous as some baby projects can be. There's an extensive section in the beginning for beginners which is still a valuable resource for the intermediate knitter.

Disappointing book.......2002-08-01

I am really disappointed with this book. Except from a couple designs that I like (see pictures in front and cover pages) all the other designs are really outdated!! Looking inside the book I realized the problem. Although the book was published in 2001 the copyrights for the designs and photos date back to 1990!

Almost all the designs have dropped shoulders and are worn with shoulder pads. There is an aran suit (blouse and skirt) that makes a twenty-year-old model look really old and fat. All tapestry sweaters have really big flowers and birds in the fronts (I was immediately reminded of poor Bridget Jones). Most of the aran sweaters and cardigans are too boxy and bulky and one of them, a bobble and cable sweater...well, I haven't seen a sweater with so many bobbles. A couple of jackets have really unappealing large(!!) collars and there is a forties-style twinset...with nothing forties or nice about it. So knitters beware!

Excellent Patterns.......2002-02-07

This book has a good variety of beautiful patterns for the entire family. I have made many sweaters from this book and each one been very easy and clear to follow. Each pattern has a colour photo to help you choose which ones to knit. I highly recommend this book!

Healthy helps.......2005-11-20

As a new homeowner, I like this book. It deals with older homes, which I have and actually supplies information that I paid someone to give me. Here it is for the cost of the book. I recommend this for people who own their first home and especially if you are chemically sensitive or chemically aware (of potential dangers)..
There are many books on the market. This one seemed very useful to me.
The only reason I rated it 4 rather than 5 is that it didn't do the work for me. !!!

Dissapointing.......2001-09-09

Is this book about Healthy Homes/MCS or Envrionmentally Friendly Homes or Energy Efficient Design? It tries to do all three and ends up doing none of them well.

There is not much current information about toxic building materials/multiple chemical sensivity. If that is what you are looking for, Paula Baker Laporte and John Bower are much better choices.

The case studies are outdated. Typical of architects, there are a bazillion architectural building details that you may or may not find useful. As a Home Builder, I found this book a waste of time and money.

Moms as Warriors.......2005-05-19

When you're in the midst of diaper changes, tantrums and a lack of "me time", it's nice to have something or someone remind you of the bigger picture. Dojo Wisdom for Mothers does that. By comparing a mom's life to that of a martial artist, one learns not only some useful tips for momhood, but also a bit about the martial arts (hence the title "Dojo" which is a place where martial artists practice).

The framework that writer and martial arts expert Jennifer Lawler uses in the book provides an interesting way to think about the mothering role. One of my favorites is "The way is different for every mother" - meaning that moms are all different, and there's no reason we have to act the same. Another favorite is "Take what you can use, discard the rest." (I guess I'm noticing some patterns amongst my favorites!) Parents get a lot of advice - some works, and some doesn't. Lawler's point is to pick up the skills that will help YOU, realizing that not everything works of everyone. It's helpful to keep in mind when getting unsolicited tips from others.

The book is written in short chapters, with the advice in the title. Personal examples follow, as well as exercises you can use to practice the advice. It's an easy book to read - a few pages or chapters before bed, or when you have a few minutes in line at the post office.
