While serving as president of the Federal Republic of Germany (1984-94), Richard von Weizsäcker delivered a speech to the German Parliament about the need for Germans to acknowledge their Nazi past and ask forgiveness of the Nazis' victims. The speech, made to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Germany's unconditional surrender in World War II, shocked some Germans--especially those who feel that trying to forget the past is the best way to put it behind them.

Von Weizsäcker has witnessed most of Germany's tumultuous 20th century, and recounts his experiences in From Weimar to the Wall. The son of a diplomat and grandson of a former prime minister in the royal government, von Weizsäcker spent much of his youth abroad, returning home to serve as a front-line officer in the German Army in World War II. After the war he completed a law degree and worked in industrial management; in 1965 began a political career, serving as a deputy in the Bundestag and mayor of West Berlin before being named president in 1984. An excellent diplomat, he developed good relations with neighboring countries, and was a major factor in German unification. As evidenced by his famous V-E day speech, von Weizsäcker was passionate about the need for Germans to remember their past. When recounting his own, his chatty, friendly style is well suited to delightful vignettes. For example, the day after the Berlin Wall came down, he entered Potsdamer Platz and was approached and saluted by a lieutenant from the East German police, who said "Reporting, Federal President: No uncommon occurrences." great history lesson.......1999-06-04

A good book to read. You get a better understanding of the pre/during/post WW II period in Europe of politics and the main actors involved. I read the original in Dutch where it was published three years ago. Now I give it to my American relatives to read. The humanity the author expresses in the book really struck me. It put a human face on much I have read till now about these years.

The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle was perhaps the most famous and popular of all U.S. military rifles. First issued in 1903, it served in two world wars and the Korean War and numerous smaller military actions around the globe between in the first half of the 20th Century. It even saw limited service during the War in Vietnam. Today, it is an extremely popular and sought-after military rifle by collectors. A modification of the famous Mauser bolt action, The Model 1903 Springfield was legendary for its accuracy in the hands of a well-trained rifleman. A variation of the rifle developed especially for match shooting held the crown in the National Matches longer than any other rifle. The National Matches have been conducted annually on a nationwide basis since 1873—except in wartime—and involved both civilian and military shooters competing on an equal basis. The matches exerted a great deal of influence on the design of American military rifles and marksmanship training.

“The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle and its Variations” provides a detailed examination of this famous military rifle on a part-by-part basis. Every variation in every part is documented and matched to the serial number range of its use. Thirty-one different variations of the rifle were developed over the 41 year course of its production and all are described and identified.

Twelve different variations of the rifles were developed as sniper rifles beginning in 1907. All are discussed and described as are the telescopic sights used on each. The rifle was produced for civilian shooters by the Springfield national armory as well. Several variations of .30 caliber rifles were developed and sold through the Director, Civilian Marksmanship Program and the National Rifle Association for target shooting and hunting. A range of .22 caliber rimfire rifles was also developed for both low cost military and civilian marksmanship training in the 1920s and 1930s.

During World War II, to meet the needs of a 12 million man military force, the Remington Arms Company and the Smith Corona Typewriter Company produced more than 1.8 million Model 1903A3 rifles including the Remington-manufactured Model 1903A4 sniper rifle.

Appendices provide additional information on serial numbers, production numbers, ammunition, inspection procedures and markings, lists of military and civilian inspectors and their markings, the National Match rifle and the rare and highly classified Pedersen device that converted this bolt action rifle to a semiautomatic rifle during World War I with never-before published original factory photos. A thorough bibliography completes the text.

“The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle and its Variations,” is the fifteenth book in the North Cape Publication's “For Collectors Only” series for beginning and advanced firearm's collectors and the twenty-third book on their list. This book is a complete compilation and discussion of all variations of this famous rifle.

I found Mr. Poyer's guide very easy to use. The many Appendices, tables and illustrations are an invaluable resource; while it is small enough to carry to shows and auctions.

Author Joe Poyer leaves no detail overlooked. His work, in my experience, outshines all others and could be called "definitive" on the subject upon which he has written. I highly recommend The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle and Its Varitiions as an invaluable addition to the library of the firearms enthusiast.

The Springfield 1903 Rifles.......2007-07-17

The book is really great, with a lot of work evidently put in on it. I would consider it a must for any serious collector's library. However, be forewarned, all of the photos are in black and white, and some are too dark to reveal the detail you would like to see for identification purposes. Having that been said, I still would want it as a part of my reference library, if not, but for the devotion that Lt. Col. Brophy put into it.

I'm a firm believer that you can never have too many reference works in your field of interest. I bought this book as I had very little information on the Springfield rifles. This is one of the most comprehensive single subject books that I've come across and I'm very happy to have it on my shelves. It gives a very full rundown on the history of the rifle, all the various versions, the accessories and users. Its lavishly illustrated, well written, well laid out and it comes in a proper binding that makes it a pleasure to use.

I can't speak too highly about this volume and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in military firearms.

The Best Springfield Book.......2004-11-29

Many books have been written about the U.S. M1903 Springfield Rifle, and this one is the very best, bar none. It gets down into the technical and minutiae without becoming a bore, and has enough of life inserted to make it readable. If you need a textbook on the M1903, this is The Book to own. now I have to consider disposing of several books I have purchased, as they are no longer needed>

This book contains a huge amount of very detailed information. It is relatively expensive, but it contains enough information for two books. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the M1903 Springfield.

I don't know why I didn't buy it earlier. Very informative and a lot of great information.
If you like springfield 03's you need this book. A little expensive, but worth it.

This book is a reprint of a study, entitled "United States Rifles and Machine Guns" by Colvin and Viall (1917), of the manufacturing techniques used to build the M1903 Springfield rifle. It is quite complete, including drawings of every part of the rifle along with gages, fixtures, tools, and production data. This book isn't a collectors guide to the Springfield but for someone interested in HOW the rifle was made, it provides detail available from no other source I know of. The data is provided without much explanation, so those with knowledge of machining will get the most out of the book.

Two other sections are included which are:
Reprint of "Instructions to Bidders and Specifications Governing the Manufacture and Inspection of the United States Rifle, Caliber .30 Model of 1903" (July 1, 1916) and:

Reprint of arcitles from "Army Ordnance" magazine (July-Aug 1928)

Paper back, aprox 350 pages.

I LOVED this book.......2005-07-26

I loved this book. I read it when it first came out, and I remember writing a "fan" letter to the author when I was only about 2/3 of the way through. It was that good! It was such a thorough picture of this family (and hence thousands upon thousands of families) following World War II, through the 50's, the revolutionary 60's and straight through to the 1990s. The family members are all so different, just as the members of my family are all so different. The book is brilliantly hilarious and scathingly ridiculous and funny and tragic, all at once. In short, here is a typical American family of those years; here are the parents who tried so hard and made so many mistakes, and managed to squeeze in a life of their own along the way; and the 4 children who tried so hard but didn't know what they were supposed to be doing -- their parents' way? A new way? A radical way? What they didn't realize was that they had choices. They also didn't realize that when they made those choices they were not irrevocable. I have just read of the death of one of the children and that has spurred me to check out the book here at Amazon.com, and to get my copy down and read it again. It is history, people. It is OUR history. Please read it. You will see yourself and your friends and neighbors and you will laugh and cry and be happy to have lived such a varied existence.

Must Rest for Baby Boomers.......2002-08-02

As a history buff, this book was wonderful in giving a social perspective on the post-war decades of the 20th century. The family setting provides a great backdrop for the American story in this era. Highly recommended.

A social history from the 40's to the 90's........1999-01-03

This book follows the lives of Gordon family members from 1945 to the 90's. The most interesting aspect of this social history is the tracing of social trends from drug use and student sit-ins(60's)through civil rights, anti-Vietnam War marches , self- discovery to yoga and natural foods - and the change is dizzying! The one problem is that so much is covered that the final effect is a listing rather than a development of ideas. However, it is definitely worth reading and provides a personal "take" on a lot of issues not usually addressed from a family viewpoint.

Intimate and profound portrait of an American family........1998-07-09

Katz spent four years with the Gordon family to write an exhaustive portrait that is at once hilarious and profoundly sad. Every facet of the lives of the six principles is explored in withering detail, and is set against a back drop of the cultural and political events of the day, from Truman to Bush. At each step of the way, Katz also quotes from pop and academic commentaries on the American family, which either illuminates the inner dynamics of the Gordon family or serves to illustrate how absurd such observations, made in the heat of the moment, can be.

I found myself totally absorbed with the Gordon family at each step of their lives. I could not put this book down.

Louis plays the cornet.......2007-01-10

This book is a bit long for younger children, but works well for 3-4th graders. If you paraphrase the wording, it might work better to keep the kids' attention. I teach music classes and found this helped the students. There is a part of book that says Louis fired his Uncle's gun off in the street for New Years, so we had to discuss why it was dangerous to do that. Luckily, the book also describes Louis' getting caught by the police in the act. This is a touching story which I hope is true. I'm not sure whether it is or not, but the end is very moving and my students were engaged by it.

This book is a good buy if you want to share one of the stories of Louis Armstrong with a child. I reitterate, ONE of the stories. When reading about Louis Armstrong, I have come across three different versions of how Satchmo attained his trumpet/cornet. This story suggests that the band directer at the colored-waiffs home for boys gave him his first cornet. This book is a good portrayal of this book if this is the story you believe. If reading for strictly the purpose of introducing a musical legend and/or instrument to a child, this is a great story. If teaching about the person, I wouldn't rely solely on this tale regarding Louis Armstrong.

Excellent picture book biography of the jazz musician........1998-03-20

One of the best picture book biographies I've seen, the rich text and earthy pictures evoke the soul of the jazz artist, pictured here as a boy. A lovely introduction to a jazz master for very young readers from six years and older.

From April 1933 to early 1943, Bernard Loesener served as the official "Jewish Expert" in the German Third Reich's Ministry of the Interior, the government body responsible for the Nazi's legislative assault on German Jewry. In that role, he personally drafted much of the legislation, the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 preeminently, that gradually dispossessed, disenfranchised, and dehumanized the Jews of Nazi Germany. In 1950, Loesener penned a memoir that sought to explain, and justify, his actions during the ten year escalation of Nazi oppression that resulted, to Loesener's professed horror, in the Final Solution. It was published in 1961, in German, by the journal Vierteljahrshefte fuer Zeitgeschichte. It has never before appeared in English, until now--in Legislating the Holocaust.
