Book Description
Mahatma Gandhi was one of the outstanding moral and political figures of the twentieth century. This book assesses his life and career, from his education in India and England, through his years in South Africa as a young lawyer and emergence as leader of the Indian minority there, to his return to India and central role in the struggle against the Raj. Antony Copley examines the intellectual and cultural values, and the events, particularly the Second World War, which shaped Gandhi's distinctive political, economic and social ideas, especially his philosophy of non-violence. He concludes by considering the legacy of Gandhi's thinking both within and beyond India.

Crick Kids.......2006-11-05
Found the book very well written. It was very interesting to me as I grew up on one of the farms she wrote about. My wife did not grow up in the area and found it well written also. The last chapter was done well, in bringing the book to a close.
Book Description
Organization of materials reflects the reality of competition between media in the marketplace and pushes the students to analyze underlying legal issues in a broader context. The coverage is appropriate not only for the law school setting but also for specialized courses in schools of communication. The book relies heavily upon textual discussion to explain complex regulatory issues and to expose underlying policy considerations. The work is multi-disciplinary, pulling together materials from the fields of law, economics, and technology.

Book Description
More photographs, updated prices, added information-collectors will be racing to tear into the new edition of this best-selling title! For most, when receiving a new toy, half the fun is ripping open the package and playing with it. However, the growing appeal toward the line of Hot Wheels® Collector Number Packs-a numbered line of cars distributed by Mattel with slight variations, where the color, wheel, interior or window might have been altered-is them remaining in the original packaging.
Author and Hot Wheels® collector, Michael Zarnock expands coverage of the most comprehensive identification and price guide available to include variations found in blister packages from 1989-2002. More than 2,500 cars and their variations are listed and nearly 2,500 are pictured in clear, large full-color photographs. Plus, readers can now step behind the scenes with exclusive information from some of the designers at Mattel who've created these cars and their paint schemes.
Accurate descriptions and up-to-date pricing for more than 2,500 cars and their variations
Provides handy checklist format for easy inventorying
Offers bonus information on tips and trading secrets and what to watch for in the hobby
Michael Zarnock has been collecting Hot Wheels® cars since the late 1960s, he is one of the country's most respected authorities on Hot Wheels® and also holds a Guinness World Record for his Hot Wheels® collection. Michael currently writes a monthly column for Toy Cars & Models magazine, and he is author of Warman's® Hot Wheels® Field Guide and contributed to the Standard Catalog of ® Die-Cast Vehicles and Toys & Prices 11th Edition 2004.

updating Hot Wheels variations data.......2007-09-02
I find this book extremely helpful in listing a very large percentage of the current (1989 onwards) Hot Wheels variations. The book follows on from the earlier editions and I find it a very useful refererence source.
Hot Wheels Variation Guide 3rd Edition.......2007-08-26
Awesome very fast shipping. Arrived in excellent condition. Will buy from again. Thanks so much.
Another great update to the Holy Grail of variation hunters.......2007-08-24
If you collect variations of Hot Wheels, you have probably heard of the Godfather of Variations, Michael Zarnock. This guy is nuts about variations and has put together one of the top 3 Hot Wheels collector books ever published. I love the book and have loved it since volume 1 because it has fantastic Blue Card identification pictures and very accurate price guide. If you don't know if a variation is real or fake, just check the Grail, it will let you know if you are dealing with fraud or not. In other words, if it is not in this book you are probably not dealing with a variation. Indispensible to a serious Hot Wheel collector. Gratzi, Don Zarnock.
a new chapter for hot wheels collectors.......2006-04-18
I just got got this book today and It was more than I expected there were tons and tons of pictures, mr. zarnock give yourself a pat on the back because you did one heke of a job.
Unbelievable!!!!.......2004-04-21
The first Edition was great, but this one is even better. All updated prices and photos. There are so many pictures, I spend most of my time just looking at them.
Mr. Zarnock did a super job as he always does. I recommend this Hot Wheels Variation Guide to any collector.
I really like the check boxes next to each listing. It really helps when you are at a show or the flea market. I also like the interviews and pictures of the people from Mattel. It's nice to see the people that design and make these cars being a part of the hobby.
Thanks Mr. Zarnock for another great book to help my collection.

Amazing Guide for Collectors !.......2004-03-01
I started collecting Hotwheels cars about 3 years ago. What makes me different than most of the other collectors, is that I live in Santiago, CHILE (here, Hotwheels cars market is very small compared with other countries). Many of the variations and models that exist in US, aren't available here. Mike's guide has been an invaluable tool for me to get those variations I never know that exist or I will never find hanging in pegs in Santiago.
I also have had the chance to email Mike many times and he's very compromised with this hobby (or better said, passion!).
If you love Hotwheels cars, you MUST buy this guide (or the new one that's coming by the end of March 2004).
U2, from RTC.
Invaluable Resource For Collectors.......2003-04-02
I found the 'Ultimate Guide to Hot Wheels Variations' one of the most valuable resources to date for the valuation of Hot Wheels variations; both for collectors and dealers alike. As owner of [a web site,] I refer to this guide on a daily basis for determining the minute differences between Hot Wheels variants. The guide is concise, well laid out, easy to follow, and extremely accurate (in my opinion).
Varations HA.......2002-10-30
This book stinks the pictures are horrible I donated it to te libary. It stinks
A NEW BIBLE FOR HOT WHEELS COLLECTORS.......2002-05-05
Hi Michael I had the pleasure of getting a copy of your book. It is excellent very informative and a great tool for us collectors. The descriptions were complete and detailed. I have been telling my fellow collectors about it. Finally a book that answers the question "Is there anyone more obsessed with Hot Wheels than me?" Well Michael my deepest sympathy it might be you. LOL . But I do want to give you your deserved recognition for a job well done on the book. Looking foward to future updates of your book. Thanks again for all your hard work on The Complete Guide to Hot Wheels Variations. Yours in the brotherhood of obsessive compulsive Hot Wheelers.
Finally a book on Variations!.......2002-05-03
This is a great book and being a variation collector for many years I can tell you that if there is a variation not listed in Mikes book, it probably does not exist. I have trusted this guy for many years and he has always been a straight shooter. I have never hunted for cars that were just rumors. I was so glad when I heard this book was coming out, I couldn't wait to buy it. It would be great if I had something he didn't have in there, but I'm still looking for all the things that are! And by the way. The Suzuki Quad is listed on Page 79 number 311 c variation, listed as "Tiger Paw Wheel" which some would call the POW wheel. Mike has always used his own abbriviations. That's why I like him and his book. (His web site was great, sure do miss it) He doesn't follow anybody elses lead. He goes his own way. I have met him and he is real easy to talk to. He is also the first one to admit when he is wrong, which you don't see too much these days when people write books. Thanks for the great book, I can't wait for the next one!

Sprinkled with common-sense advice as well as inspiring anecdotes, this book brings doll sculpting within everyone's reach. It is a must for any doll makers' library.

Artdolls: Basic Sculpting and Beyond.......2006-03-13
This is a very good book for the serious doll maker. I recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their skills.
Artdolls.......2005-08-20
This book is essential for anyone who would like to make Art dolls or any kind of polymer clay figure sculpture. The photography is useful and of a good quality, and the text is in-depth and helpful. I would reccomend this book to anyone, but there are just a few minor things I take issue with.
Firstly it's the near complete lack of painting instructions. I have only found a few referance so far in the book regarding painting, and all it mentions is that you may use china paint for a realistic blush, and acrylic washes for shoes! I'd love to know, for example, the different types of paint you can use for the skin, and what Mr. Johnston reccomends against using, and perhaps some techniques for the painting.
Secondly, I am concerned about the section on the soft-sculpted body. All we're told in regards to making our own is: "I advise starting with a pre-made body armature and stocking (both of which are available from retail shops)" Well. They are not available from "retail shops" really. I couldn't find them in any craft store, doll store, or art store in my entire city in fact! The only actual manufacturer of these "doll body stockings" that is easy to find online is Mr. Johnston himself, or rather, Mr. Johnston's website, which has a wide catalog of doll-making supplies. Looking at a photo of the body stocking, it looks actually extremely easy to make. A pattern for this flat thing could easily have been printed in the book so that we could photocopy it and size it to what we like, but no.
I find this a very sneaky way to solicit business, that we NOT told how to make them so that we have to buy them from him. In Mr. Johnston's defense, he does mention the "2,000-stitch body" which is for advanced dollmakers, but we are not told how to make it. I hope it is in his advanced dollmaking book, which I do not yet own.
This issue brings me right to my third and final point, constant self-plugging. Apart from the numerous referances to the fact that he provides doll supplies (with his website info in the back under "suppliers") there are huge reccomendations for ProSculpt. ProSculpt (which you can buy from his website as well as other stockists) uses one of his pieces as a logo, so I'm not sure I can trust this reccomendation to be impartial, but that's just me.
There is also a paragraph or two devoted to how easy it is to work from a resin head armature, which one of his students started manufacturing from a prototype he made (hey, guess the only place you can buy that!). As well as his "Kemper-Johnston Primary Sculpting Tool" -- a tool he created himself and then got the Kemper company to manufacture. It's assumed for many of the tutorials in the book that you own one of these tools, as we're told to poke our primary sculpting tool here and there at certain points.
I honestly have no problem with people plugging themselves and their own brand of supplies in their own book. After all, he wrote it, so why shouldn't he! *BUT* I do take issue when the sale of his own supplies comes ahead of helping the beginner. I find the way we are herded towards buying his supplies to be absolutly insidious, and it is a taint on an otherwise spotless book.
I assure you that you CAN make your own soft-sculpted body, just look for tutorials online. You don't have to buy his premade ones! Also, why not photocopy the photo of the body stocking and blow it out in size and use it as a pattern? There's saving money!! And you can easily make head armature out of aluminium foil or sculpey, you don't need a special pre-fabricated resin one! It's just a luxury for the lazy. And you don't NEED a fancy $15 multi-purpose sculpting tool! Dental tools and rubber clay smoothers and fingers work just perfectly. Again, it's a luxury.
All in all, this is a fantasticly written and illustrated book, one of the better art instruction books I've seen. Mr. Johnston is an absolutly fantastic artist, and his dolls are imaginative, alluring, and beautiful. We're all human, and the allure of extra profit can get to anyone (especially us starving artists!). So forgive him the plugging, read and love this book, and just fill in all the missing gaps with your imagination!
Good Teaching, Photography Lacking Somewhat.......2003-08-20
Good teaching, helpful details, nice stories behind some of the creations but many of the photos are very unprofessionally done. Considering the price of this publication more thought should have been put into the photography.
Note: Mr. Johnston does quite a bit of "selling/self promotion" of his products in this book but it is his book so it's his right, right?
Overall, a very good book on sculpting, sewing, encouraging others to succeed.
This is Jack's best work to date........2003-05-17
I've read all of Jack's books, taken his seminars and viewed his videos. As good as his books and videos are, this book is head and shoulders above them all. It may be the most complet text and photos available on polymer doll making. The photos are wonderful, the text is educational and the sculpting is excellent. Jack is one of the best doll makers and educators in America.
Artdolls.......2003-05-16
This is Jack Johnston's best work. I have read everything he has written and find this one amazing. If you make dolls you must read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Majesty Indeed.......2004-12-29
This is a very well put together book. I am familiar with St. Charles and this book captures the avenue well; I can almost hear the streetcar. The author did a very good job of selecting the houses represented in this book. I only wish that more pictures where taken of the exterior of the homes. The photography is well done, though the photography in the book Classic New Orleans is superior. I suggest if you are interested in this subject you buy this book and Classic New Orleans, they fit perfect together; like crawfish and new potatoes.
Beautiful southern homes--great design resource.......2004-07-03
This book is highly recommended as a compendium of beautiful southern homes. The photos are not available online to view, but the book features many styles of Victorian homes and estates as well as some garden views of those homes. I purchased this book as a resource for 19th century mural work and decorative painting and it has been invaluable for that as well as for my library on Victorian style (although some of the interiors are intentionally eclectic and are not all true to period). The book features stained glass windows, woodwork, murals, inventive use of color, design, and original architecture. I never would have purchased the book if I had not seen a favorable review and photos in Victorian Homes mag, so I hope to do you the favor of endorsing the purchase for you. Very highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
just o.k........2007-05-19
I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of Surrendering to Marriage. After reading it, I was left feeling like there should have been more. It was more about her personal transition, whereas Surrendering to Marriage was larger in scope. Not as inspirational or encouraging as I had hoped, but still had a good theme: If you have children-BE THERE! Invest the emotion and effort it truly takes to raise a healthy (mind & body) human being.
Made me cry and laugh.......2007-05-07
This book was really great. I too, like the author, had a really dynamic, fast paced career prior to having children. At first, giving it up to stay home was a miserable experience while probably the most worthwhile thing I've ever done. This book helped give me strength to keep at it and enjoy it. I have to say, I had to get half-way through the book to get to the really good parts...as the first half did the job of setting the scene for what was to come by talking about the author's career life and background. I could see where this part could be off-putting for some, especially those who aren't upper-middle class career oriented women. However, I felt like the author knew me, knew my struggle, and her story was empowering.
insulting, boring, self-promoting..........2006-02-21
This book is almost insulting to us "real" moms out there. I am a stay at home mom of 3 under 3 who was fortunate enough to be able to walk away from a big career with even bigger potential. I was hoping for some words of wisdom to make the transition a bit easier. But, alas, all this one has to offer is self-piteous name dropping and repetitive stories of a search for spirituality. Get over yourself. Her writing is insulting at times. Although I agree having so many kids so close is not a walk in the park, and definitely takes some surrendering, I also know that life would be much easier with the "staff" she was able to employ with her 4 boys. Get real, Iris.
Had me in tears...........2006-01-14
This book was an answer to my prayers, literally. When I was suffering from wondering "what if..." flights of fancy ("what if I had pursued a glamorous career instead of committing to my family", etc. etc.), this book convinced me beyond any shadow of a doubt that I not only missed NOTHING, but that I gained EVERYthing, with my choice.
The last few chapters of the book had me weeping....I felt something inside me just "click" with the RIGHTNESS of it all! Someone actually did live the life I had always dreamed of and fantasized about, and in the final analysis found her absolute fulfillment in "surrendering to motherhood".
Through the author, I lived that life, and saw how shallow and fleeting the joys would have been. What an incredible gift!
I've read some of the reviews, and I am really surprised at some of the ugliness. First, the reviewer who wasn't even a mother had NO business commenting. Sorry, but truly you have to be a mother to "get" surrendering.
Secondly, I noticed a lot of snide, snarky remarks about her having nannies and book tours. Well, I'm most definitely NOT of the "Nanny" class of people, and none of that bothered me in the least. Actually, it was really refreshing to see that money and glamour does not bring you happiness (I mean, I already KNEW this, but it was just really a huge confirmation for me). I can say that because her book made it so REAL for me.
Perhaps she is just a really gifted writer, for this book to have touched me so, but whatever the case -- I am immensely thankful that I found this book.
I might not identify with the lifestye that the author is probably accustomed to, but her feelings about motherhood and her precious children? That cuts across all class and money lines...
a book that I could feel "Shaping Me" as I read it.......2003-12-26
I think this is what I was looking for when I picked it up off the shelf - a book that is honest about how tiring and difficult parenting can be, and at the same time realizes the glimpses of the spiritual one can find through the most exhausting and seemingly menial tasks. (a bit like the Quotidian Mysteries and Kathleen Norris). I really felt this book shaping me as I read it - giving me a new way to view the prospect of motherhood. Krasnow is honest about the difficulties and the grime, so I can trust her when she also talks about the gifts and the wonder.
There was only one gap in the book for me - the role of fathers. Krasnow did describe the difficulty she experienced in her marriage and alluded to the role having 4 children so quickly played in these problems. She described how she and her husband worked on their marriage and held it together.
However, throughout the book, she talks about parenting and the highs it brings her without reflecting on her husband's role in raising the boys. What highs does parenting bring him? Is he ever around? I would have expected more "together my husband and I did this great thing with the kids" or "after we had all the boys in bed, we reflected on the day together and such-and-such that little so-and-so did and what the boys meant to us". Maybe Krasnow decided she wanted to appeal more to single mothers and cut much of the mention of her husband's role in parenting the boys out of the book. All I know is that part of parenting is learning to share the children and the caretaking with your mate, and this was not addressed.
Back to the positive, after you begin to read the book it turns into a real page-turner, which is rare for a book of its genre. Krasnow includes enough of her life to make it feel like a story, so it keeps you interested until the end. She also includes excerpts from her interviews with some very interesting figures (Barbara Bush, Yoko Ono, Queen Noor, etc. etc.) from her days as a journalist. These excerpts flow very nicely into the story. Krasnow also shares some insight she has gained about her own parents, including her pain of losing her father. These become assets to the book as well.
All in all, I would highly recommend this book to others. I am hoping to find another book that will fill in this one small gap for me. The book really is 90% excellent and 90% is pretty darned good in a book oriented to "parentintg/self-help/spiritual", a field that too often produces fluff and feel-good-moments that don't last because they placate instead of actually re-shaping you.

Well..........2006-08-05
I don't really like the book to much. Here is why:
1. Some of the pictures are backwards and are not in order. For example, on a page talking about 1981, on the same page there would be a picture from 1975.
2. The "stories behind every song" are only opinions.
3. Robert Scott doesn't sound like much of an ABBA fan.
If you are looking for a great ABBA book, you should get "From ABBA to Mamma Mia" or "ABBA the Book."
Misnomer.......2003-08-05
This book does not tell "the story behind every song" as the cover claims. It is, rather, Scott's own review of every song. The reviews are chaptered by album. There is some lightweight "scene setting" early on - basically, potted histories of the four group members - and some preamble before the individual reviews in each chapter.
As with so many other books purporting to be authorities on ABBA, this is littered with inaccuracies and tedious, regurgitated "factoids". To his credit, Scott has tried to inject some humour into his writing but the results are merely glib and the tone throughout oscillates between sneering and fawning. His instinct to avoid taking his subject too seriously would be laudable if it weren't for the sheer laziness apparent in this book. Sleeve notes appear to have been ignored or, at most, speed-read. He even contradicts himself on a number of occasions: e.g., having acknowledged Benny's decision to quit lyric writing after a few early howlers, he goes on to castigate Benny for lyrics he never wrote. Also, the identity of the lead vocalists on songs is occasionally inaccurate - and sometimes confused within a single paragraph.
The blurb makes much of the "rare" photographs used in the book. True, some of them have not previously been published. Mostly, there is a very good reason for that. They are clearly the also-rans from otherwise successful shoots. These "rare shots" catch their subject mid-blink or they are badly composed, images that other picture editors would have bypassed. None of them has any historic value. Even so, it wouldn't have been too difficult to arrange them chronologically to illustrate the period being "discussed" in each chapter but absolutely no effort has been made on that front either. The cover is sloppily designed and the internal layout is dull and dated.
There is very little on which to recommend this book. Anybody wanting to find out more about ABBA should check the following titles: "Bright Light, Dark Shadows" (Carl Magnus Palm); "ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions" (Carl Magnus Palm); "ABBA The Book" (Jean Marie Potiez); "From ABBA to Mamma Mia" (Anders Hanser/Carl Magnus Palm).
ABBA completists should do what I did: find this book in a bargain bin.

Book Description
Mordechai Gebirtig was one of the most influential and popular writers of Yiddish songs and poems. Born in 1877, he became a prolific poet and song writer, using everything he saw, heard and knew about people. His legacy, therefore, is not only one of melodies and lyrics, but also a treatise on Jewish life in Poland under the benign neglect of the Austrians, the ever growing hostility of the Poles, and finally, the terror of the Germans, who destroyed the people, their culture, and, to a great measure, their memory. Schneider's book for the first time brings his work to an English-speaking audience, offering a collection of all of his major works, complete with the scores, transliterated Yiddish text, and English translation. Her book offers a rare insight into the world of Eastern European Jews, their culture, and their music. Gebirtig's most famous song "Es Brent"--It's Burning--was written in response to a 1936 pogrom. It became a stirring hymn for the survivors of the Holocaust, who felt that the words suited their own situation very well. Gebirtig himself was shot in the Cracow Ghetto in June 1942. Neither he nor any of his close family survived the war. However, as this volume shows, his songs and poems remain an enduring voice for a Jewish community nearly lost to the Nazis. They constitute a precious legacy for anyone interested in the world of Eastern Europe Jews, their culture, and their music.
