    Book Description

'The most lovable figure in modern politics' was how A.J.P Taylor described the Christian pacifist, George Lansbury. At 73 he took over the helm of the Labour Party of only 46 MPs in the Depression years of the 1930s. Throughout a remarkable life, Lansbury remained an extraordinary politician of the people, associated with a multitude of crusades for social justice. He resigned from Parliament to support 'Votes for Women', and for the next ten years edited the fiery Daily Herald. In 1921 Lansbury led the 'Poplar Rates Rebellion' - when thirty Labour councillors went willingly to prison in defiance of the government, the courts and their own party leadership. As Labour leader, Lansbury was known universally as a committed socialist an implacable opponent of capitalism and imperialism. He never sought personal wealth, travelled everywhere by public transport, and made his home in impoverished East London. His final years were spent in a tireless international peace crusade to prevent the drift towards another world war. In this major new biography, John Shepherd draws on an impressive range of research to reconstruct the life of a charismatic Labour pioneer. He reaffirms George Lansbury's standing at the heart of Old Labour and his importance to British politics as a whole.

          Book Description

Vitus Jonassen Bering (1681-1741) is a towering figure in the history of exploration. In the course of two expeditions that consumed most of his adult life-and eventually led to his death-he journeyed from St. Petersburg to Siberia and ultimately to the northwest coast of America. Along with the members of his expedition (thousands participated in the second expedition), Bering greatly expanded the Russian empire, pioneered the geography of the North Pacific Ocean, and laid the groundwork for Russian trade and settlement in the American West. In the first biography of Bering written in over a century, Orcutt Frost chronicles the life of this extraordinary explorer. Drawing on a wide range of new evidence-including personal letters and archaeological evidence derived from the recent discovery of Bering's grave site-the author reconstructs Bering's personality, his perilous voyages, and his uneasy relationship with the naturalist Georg Steller, who unobtrusively guided the stranded expedition as Bering lay dying. A riveting narrative of adventure and disaster on the high seas, this biography is also a major contribution to the history of maritime exploration.

This book is really the story of two heros who both served Peter the Great's Russia. In the middle eighteenth century Peter the Great was determined to make Russia a world power. As part of his plan, he built St.Petersberg, his "Window on the West" after defeating the Swedes and annexing the Karelian Isthmus. But he also had designed on opening a 'window on the east', to create a direct land way to the Orient and the American Continent.

Vitus Bering was a Dane in the employ of the Russian Navy. He had distinguished himself in the Great Northern War against Sweden. He hoped the Tsar to raise him to the nobility thereby ensuring the future of his family. Peter chose him to lead the "First Kamchatcka Expedition" where he was to establish whether there was a land bridge between Asia and America. Bering did not realize that this would become his life mission and that for the next seventeen years it would all but consume him, and lead to his death on a barren island in the northwest pacific.

His two expeditions to Siberia and Alaska, firmly placed these lands in the dominion of the "Tsar of All the Russias, etc", establishing the location of the Arctic Sea outlets for many of Siberia's major rivers (the Ob, Lena and Yenesi). His expedition would map the pacific coast of Asia, the sea of Okhotsk, the Kurile Islands and Hokkaido; the Aleutian Islands, Kodiak Island and the coastal areas around the Alaskan Penninsula. His crew were the first to document a meeting with Americans (Aleut Islanders) in the area, who they realized had many of the characteristics of northern Asians (like the Chukhats). He also established a harbor on Kamchatcka that would become it's major city and port (Petropavlosk-Kamchatcka) for the Russian Navy.

The last section of the book deals with his crew (of the St.Peter) and the year they spent shipwrecked on what would become Bering Island. Since Bering died eight days after they landed, the story is really about Georg Wilhelm Steller (Frost's other hero) and how he saved the crew and got them safely back to Petropavlosk.

Frost has studied both these men in minutia and sometimes it comes through in the narrative like a kid copying from an encyclopedia to lengthen his term paper. We get provisioning lists down to the poundage and number of days for flour and dried beef. More than once we are even given recipes on how rice cakes were made and with how much of each ingedient. But, you can always skim these parts.

His discussion of the courage and stoicism of both Bering and Steller are what make this a worthwhile read and a remarkable book.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful read, new light shed on Russia in Alaska.......2003-12-12

In the age of exploration only one man surpassed Captain Cook and that was Bering of Russia. A man whose daring and exploration gave Russia claim to Alaska and gave Russians maps that would send them full throttle into Asia, from Kamchatka to the Sakhalin Islands to Port Arthur. This wonderful new book tells the story of Bering in depth from his first voyage to his tragic death. A necessary piece of history this will be of interest to anyone who enjoys high adventure and exploration as well as Russian History. A singular individual, Bering accomplished so much in his life and opened so many doors to what had been a closed Russian society. Far more then simply the Bering Strait this book sheds light on a whole era, and a whole new episode of history, usually overlooked in our bias for dashing English explorers like Cook and Scott.

4 out of 5 stars Captain-Commander Vitus Bering Was BAD!!!.......2002-10-16

'Journal of a Voyage With Bering 1741-1742' is very impressive because it is an as-close-to and an as-smooth-as possible translation of Steller's original journal of his 'epic' journey with Captain-Commander Vitus Bering from the Kamchtaka peninsula to the Aleutians, Alaska, and their intense voyage back through a very hazardous winter (ultimately the vessel was shipwrecked on Bering Island, where the Captain met his untimely fate...). In reading this book you can sense just how ominous that region was for first-time explorers (and still is!), and the fear engendered by such an awesome unknown region is evident in many of the crewmen's comments (and ends...). Steller himself is quite the opposite- very steadfast in the journey, and very focused on his work- what the expedition worked hard for ten years to prepare for- to study the area and peoples and flora and fauna etc. beyond the 60th parallel NE of Russia.
I gave this account 4 stars instead of 5 because the introduction- while very scholarly and interesting- might be too pedantic at times. One buys this book to first and foremost read Steller's account of the voyage - not to read about all the minutae details of the man's various capacities prior to the expedition. Stating he was a masterful botanist, biologist, marine biologist, medic, etc. might have been enough...
The other problem I have with this book is Steller himself, who more often than not holds gripes against his crew and the Captain- and does not restrain himself from making this known in his writing. The problem is, is that often I feel the Captain's wariness is justified, while Steller would rather just go off and study plants and the indigenes, irrespective (oblivious?) of the dangers of the region and the timeframe before the onset of winter. The point is, for anyone who has navigated by ship the Aleutian waters even in our modern era - those waters are some of the most, if not THEE most dangerous waters in the world- and Steller, while at times making good and prudent navigational decisions (which, by the way, were often ignored by Captain Bering), at other times just wanted to go around and collect plants and artifacts when the rest of the crew and the Captain rightly wanted to lift anchor- and often waited just for Steller to return to the ship for this very purpose. Steller just put the entire crew in undue danger on more than one occasion.
Overall, though, this is a fascinating account of the very earliest Aleutians Islands voyage by 'Europeans.' Read and judge for yourself who was making the best calls. Sometimes it was Steller- but at other times, the Captain's prudence was very justified.

                      Book Description

Public Venture Capital is an invaluable resource you will use again and again when seeking an inside track to government dollars. Relatively few entrepreneurs are aware that government funds from programs with acronyms like SBIR, ATP, Dual Use, ManTech, DARPA, and Act II can provide both initial and later-stage venture capital for their companies. Moreover, public venture capital programs do not require equity in exchange. Funding is available to technology start-ups and innovative firms through a variety of government programs.

The purpose of this book is to familiarize you with the concept of public venture capital and to illustrate how to use the above-mentioned programs to fund technology endeavors. Public Venture Capital brings together information and resources on programs that make funds available to technology entrepreneurs and innovative firms on a competitve basis. Whether your interest is in a specific project or technology idea or you are looking for more general information regarding public venture capital, this book will be specifically helpful to you.

Public Venture Capital provides insight and helpful hints - based on interviews with successful applicants and current program officers - on how to win government funding awards. More important, it provides the tools needed to gain access to revelant programs and people.

This book is organized to allow you to go from broad topic areas to your specific areas of interest. For example, if you have a specific project in mind you can go to the Science and Technology Index and spot where your project fits in. From this starting point you will be guided elsewhere in the book to find leads for making appropriate contacts, to find more information about current programs in your field, and to learn how and why these programs were founded.

In contrast to private venture capital, government is not trying to earn a profit. Its objectives are to generate jobs, to assist the growth of the economy, and to increase tax revenues in the long term. Thus, government programs may offer funding to a broader range of technologies than do private venture capital firms.

You'll even receive lists of agencies, proposal preparation kits, lists of resource centers, list of Web sites, policy guides for specific agencies, sample proposals, and more on the FREE companion CD-ROM!

                            Book Description

Smith & Wesson is one of the world?s most recognizable and

innovative gun manufacturers. Today?s active shooters,

gunsmiths and collectors have a particular interest in the guns

that have been used by nearly every major law and military

agency in the world. This definitive resource reviews Smith &

Wesson guns on a model-by-model basis, giving enthusiasts a

brief history, a review of technical specifications, and a report

on test shooting and performance for each.

The book covers all categories of Smith & Wesson arms,

including revolvers, automatic pistols and long guns. A special

chapter gives readers a tour of the Smith & Wesson factory

and corporation, and other features include a look at

competition uses, Smith & Wesson rarities, and use of the

                            weapons in law enforcement.

                            4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-03-10

The book is built around several "tests" of different S&W handguns, and it also gives some historical- and tech info.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Survey of Current S&W guns.......2006-11-06

This book provides an excellent survey of handguns currently offered by Smith and Wesson. The writer has extensive pratical experience and has been assisted with test firing by a group of friends. Very readable and lots of good photos. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone thinking of purchasing a new or near new S&W.

4 out of 5 stars Gun Digest of Smith & Wesson........2006-07-10

Not quite what I was expecting in this book, but is very informative on later model handguns from this great gunmaker.
Will have to look further for a book with models and serial numbers.

                            3 out of 5 stars A good basic Study of S&W Handguns.......2006-07-03

Patrick Sweeney has taken on the task of giving an extensive review of the available handguns of Smith & Wesson. He goes into considerable depth on the practical use of the various models and what can be expected on the range, in competion and for the very serious job of Concealed Weapons Carry. Chapters on History, Ammunition, Buying Used, and Competion round this fine effort out.

4 out of 5 stars Gun Digest Book of S&W.......2006-02-20

I am a novice S&W collector and was hoping for more of a reference work covering specific models and variations of Smith & Wesson handguns. This book is biased towards current models, both revolvers and semi-autos. The material that is covered is well written, interesting, and timely. Sections are devoted to a sampling of current models, company history, accessories, proper disassembly and maintenance, etc. However, if you are a collector looking for wider coverage of specific models this book may dissappoint. The book is better suited to people who are interested in what S&W is currently offering or how to care for their S&W guns.

It has been many years since I last read this book. I first read it when I was 14 years old and I still remember much of the story. I got the book as a gift from my grandmother who then on my advice read and loved the book as well. This book is good for all ages. This true story tops many best selling novels. The book is written so well that the reader is drawn into the story feeling that he is there with Chaim facing the same dangers. From an educational perspective many geographical and historical lessons are built into the book. May Chaim's memory and story be a blessing for us all.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A Great Loss , A Lasting Memorial.......2000-11-08

Chaim Shapiro's inspiring book is a lasting legacy and wonderful memorial to the author, who unfortunately passed away this autumn, and the European Jewish communities of WWII. Courage and faith combine in this highly recommended, true adventure story of great historical importance.

Slow at first, but once you get into it you can't put it down. It really gives you a insiders personal experience about world war II. I think that I'd recommend it to everyone!

                                          5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......1999-11-26

Awesome book! A must read! Very educational and at the same time its also a book you can't put down until you are done. This should make a great movie one day. The story is about a young jewish boys travels through Russia and Germany during WW2. It shows how he had to escape from numerous situations that normally would have been fatal to a real military man. In the mean time he is only a teenager. Don't start this book unless you have enough time to finish it in one reading!

Chaim Shapiro tells the incredible story of his escape from first Nazi then Communist occupied Poland. He manages to get into and out of all types of situations, while keeping us laughing with his view of ww2 era Soviet Union. As a sixteen year old Jew, he inspires us with his loyalty in spirit and practice to his religion. Being an avid reader of ww2 era- writings, I have to say that this tops the list.I'm just surprised that this isn't a best seller!
