Book Description

“Okay, girls, let's go save the country,” was Gwen Pharo's rallying call as she and thousands of ordinary women fought to bring two-party politics to Texas. As the 1950s began, an entrenched and complacent Democratic Party ruled the state, as it had since Reconstruction, without a Republican in sight. By 1998, Republicans occupied every statewide office, with a governor poised to be president of the United States.

This remarkable transformation was the result of the hard work and commitment of women from all corners of Texas—women who believed in the necessity of choice and political competition for responsible and responsive government.

Nearly 250 women, speaking for thousands of others who worked by their sides, relive the ups and downs of this historic political movement in Grassroots Women. From the precinct conventions and county organizations to the state committee and up to the national arena—as committeewomen, chairwomen, fundraisers, campaign managers and workers, candidates, staff members, and elected officials—their participation in politics and public service gives us a selfless, uncynical model of the power of grassroots organization, volunteerism, and faith in democracy.

5 out of 5 stars Women: Co-Creators of the Texas G.O.P........2001-03-19

GRASSROOTS WOMEN is primarily about Texas and Texans but also has something for all Americans in love with politics. For example, Republican women interviewed by the author tell of supporting through doubts and disappointments Senator John Tower, Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon and other politicians. Campaign strategists of any party can harvest winning tips about fund raising, telephone polling, selecting great candidates and running campaigns from women who were there and did these things, including Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Ambassador Ann Armstrong.

--Sociologists will find raw material about the struggle for equal status with men. For decades the most Republican women could hope for was to be invited to serve as the sometimes barely tolerated Deputy Chairmen of long entrenched males. Winning Co-Chairman status was not easy. Feminists will note little signs of emerging personal identities not derivative from one's husband. Thus, one and the same person served as G.O. P. National Committeewoman for Texas from 1982 to 1999. She is recorded in 82-83 as Mrs. H. E. Chiles, Mrs. Fran Chiles in 84-85, and just plain Fran Chiles in 86-87. (See list, p. 506.)

--Texas women could not even sit on juries before 1954. Glass ceilings were everywhere. Republicans first empowered themselves through political clubs for women before they moved up to party positions like precinct chairmen. They campaigned for favored candidates with their babies in their arms. Without active Republican women, GRASSROOTS WOMEN suggests, Texas might still be a majority Democratic Party state, though notably more conservative than the national Democratic party of Senator Ted Kennedy.

Book Description

Following in the footsteps of Napoleon's army, Europeans invaded Egypt in the early ninetecnth century to gaze in wonder at the massive, inscrutable remains of its ancient civilizations. One of these travelers was a twenty-four-year-old Englishman, John Gardner Wilkinson. His copious observations of ancient and modern Egyptian places, artifacts, and lifeways, recorded in such widely read publications as Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians and Handbook for Travellers in Egypt, made him the leading early Victorian authority on ancient Egypt and paved the way for thc scientific study of Egyptology. In this first full-scale biography of Wilkinson (1797-1875), Jason Thompson skillfully portrays both the man and his era. He follows Wilkinson during his initial sojourn in Egypt (1821-1833) as Wilkinson immersed himself in a contemporary Egyptian lifestyle and in study of its ancient past. He shows Wilkinson in his circle of friends--among them Edward William Lane, Robert Hay and Frederick Catherwood. And he traces how Wilkinson continued to use his Egyptian material in the decades following his return to England. With the rise of professional Egyptology in the middle and later nineteenth century, Sir Gardner Wilkinson came to be viewed as an amateur and his popularity diminished. Drawing upon recently opened sources, Thompson returns Wilkinson to his rightful place within centuries of Egyptian scholarship and assesses both the vision and the limitations of his work. The result is a compelling portrait of a Victorian "gentleman-scholar" and his cultural milieu.

4 out of 5 stars His place in Egyptological history.......2000-06-13

With the death of Champollion and Young, Gardner Wilkinson was for a while probably the world's foremost expert on the emerging study of hieroglyphics. He spent several years in Egypt and even built a house using a tomb in the Theban hillside at Gurna.

This well written, eminently researched book is a fascinating read. It sheds light on the early days of Egyptology and shows us the relationships between some of the giants of the then nascent discipline. It also illuminates the often competitive world of 19th century scholarship in the days of European dilettantism.

Thompson obviously had great interest in his subject and presents Wilkinson in an interesting light, although not much dimension comes through concerning Wilkinson's personality until late in the Egyptologist's life. This may be due to a lack of materials that supply such information about the man. His work is covered much better. While I couldn't help admiring Wilkinson's work, I found little to like about the man, especially considering that like many of his European contemporaries, he bought himself a female slave in Egypt (with whom he apparently later made financial arrangements before leaving Egypt). He also had a rather unenlightened opinion of the modern Egyptians, whom it seems he did little to get to know.

Those facts notwithstanding, the book keeps the reader's interest from start to finish and anyone interested in Egyptology would enjoy this book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand.......1999-12-18

As a non-lawyer and a non-expert in antitrust, I found this to be a very useful introduction and reference. It takes a fairly dispassionate view of antitrust, yet gives the reader some insight into some of the controversies and unresolved issues in the field. The writing is clear and often lively. The authors use examples well to illustrate their point, but don't go into excessive detail. It doesn't just cover the laws, but it covers the procedures and some of the key doctrines that have developed over the years. A student of antitrust will probably want a much more comprehensive book, but for someone just getting in to the topic this is an excellent, inexpensive and short introduction. It probably took me about three or four hours to read the whole book.

2 out of 5 stars Ho hum.......1998-09-09

This book was basically mildly mediocre. Maybe it's because I already know something about the antitrust laws, but I didn't feel that this book actually told me anything new. I feel that perhaps in their effort to make the antitrust laws "readable" by a layman they have made the material useless. You could probably find just as useful an introduction to antitrust laws online someplace for free.

              Book Description

In their pioneering first edition of this work in 1974, the authors, Earl W. Kintner and Mark R. Joelson, pointed out that the coming era of increasingly interdependent national economies and powerful multinational enterprises posed a great challenge from the viewpoint of competition regulation. The need to foster competition in a globalized economy characterized by international transactions and relationships, accomplished at great speed, required new approaches by national regulators and even consideration of international rules. Twenty seven years later, the globalized economy is an acknowledged fact, and some 90 nations maintain competition regimes, in an effort to keep their economies free of cartels and abuses imposed by dominant firms. In consequence, the focus has shifted from efforts to legitimize competition laws as a necessary element of universal economic policy to the pursuit of internationally acceptable and effective means for assuring and regulating business competition on a global scale. In this second edition, Mark R. Joelson brings up to date the discussion of the status of and prospects for competition regulation, focussing on several important regimes. The book contains detailed summaries of the antitrust laws of the United States and the competition laws of the European Communities, including the case law. It also reviews the applicable competition laws and important developments in Canada, Mexico, the U.K. and Japan. The work contains the essential information in a single volume for easy and practical use by the business person, journalist, lawyer or student who wishes to become familiar with this field.

Still a classic after all these years, the Zippo folks keep to the basic rule, don't mess with rightness and success will follow. Endearing classics like the rural mailbox, Duracell batteries or a Stanley knife are simple solutions that stay with us decade after decade. The Zippo company did branch out in Sixties with a new line in table lighters, it was not a success.

This is a typical company history book (produced with their blessing) so don't expected any deep insight. The authors zip through the decades with anecdotes and factoids mixed in with plenty of photos, illustrations, period ads and dozens of pictures of lighters. The design of the book is the main reason I bought it. Strangely, for a conveniently small product, many of the lighters shown are either larger or smaller than the real thing, I would have thought it sensible to keep them all life size.

The company recognises that collectors buy more than thirty percent of sales and they capitalize on this by bringing out annual collections plus specials for any event that seems appropriate. A useful eight pages near the back of the book covers dating your Zippo, with photos of the bottom of the lighter which has a simple coding system.

If you are a collector of this world famous lighter this nice looking little book would be worth buying though I can't see the reason for the hefty price.

                            Book Description

In offices across the country, dressing casually for work is the norm, not the exception, every day of the week, not just Fridays. But what are the rules for business casual? How can men figure out what's appropriate and what's not, without sacrificing or compromising their personal style? Over the past year, GQ, The New York Times, and even Fortune Magazine have all offered advice and counsel about making this transition--but this worrisome and universal problem still poses a fashion challenge for most men. So how can today's businessmen dress without getting a dressing down? Dress Casually for Success. . .for Men answers those questions, and helps men figure out how to dress with authority, style, and comfort, without breaking the rules. It shows readers how to handle the new fashion edicts, guides them through the intricacies of fabrics, patterns, accessories, and colors, and ultimately will help them project just the right image at work and at play, from power lunches to job interviews, to business-related nights on the town. In today's offices and boardrooms, it's the subleties that can make or break a look. Complete with black-and-white and color photos, easy-to-use charts, and quick references for Fashion Do's and Don't, here is the first and only guide to going corporate casual with flair and confidence.

2 out of 5 stars not enough information to make it worth it.......2002-04-13

Luckily this book can be read in a sitting...big text and few pages. Too bad there isn't enough information to make it worth sitting long enough to read. This book commits the single biggest mistake that any fashion book can commit: it doesn't have pictures (especially color pictures) of the things it is talking about. Wonder what worsted wool gabardine is? I sure do! They give a definition but no picture is present for me to understand how this is different from some other kind of lightweight wool.

The book does a few guidelines about kinds of clothing to consider wearing and ways to care for them. However, we're talking about a few dozen pages of information. That's the kind of thing I would expect to find on a webpage for free.

The biggest problem is they don't offer a lot of guidelines and never seem to tell you what things you absolutely shouldn't do. So what you're left with is a few ideas but not really enough to build a wardrobe on. You'd do just as well browsing through a few GQ magazines while waiting in line at the supermarket and then heading to a nice clothing store to figure out what worsted wool gabardine is on your own.

4 out of 5 stars Decent job on an obscure subject........2001-09-10

The first third or half of the book is a waste of time. But the rest makes it worth buying.

Most books only give a passing explanation on casual friday. This one analyzes it to death. They give names for four different types of casual dress, and give guides and even wardrobe lists for each of those styles. It definitely helped me figure out what image I want to present.

My criticism is that like many magazines, movie reviews, entertainment shows, etc, it hates to say "don't." There are too many "you could try this" or "some would prefer that" type answers, and it doesn't really tell about the gaffes people might commit. Also, more and colored photos would help, but most any book on the subject would likely have that same flaw.

I don't believe there to be a better resource on business casual dress, and to the Van Heusen group's credit they don't plug their stores much at all (aside from a few Bass Weejun mentions). Buy it, tear out the first 3-4 chapters, and be happy.

                            4 out of 5 stars a good solid book.......2001-03-24

This is a good book for people who want to dress better at casual work places or, in my case, men who are looking to improve their style.

That's one of the problems: not a lot of good style books out there for men. This one does a pretty good job, showing illustrations to help you along and giving some key points.

Definitely worth a look. Also, even better, check out Carole Jackson's COLOR FOR MEN. I wrote a review over there, too.

4 out of 5 stars This book offers good points for men of all ages and size.......2001-01-30

I thought this was a good reference book. It offers good points on casual dressing for men of all sizes. I have two jobs, one as a male dancer and the other as a real estate agent. I must wear casual dress wear and sometimes I just don't match. This book provided me with information on how to wear anything from jeans and tennis to slacks and sports jackets.

4 out of 5 stars Keeping it simple.......2000-03-27

I work for a company that allows me to dress "business casual" every day. I have to admit that I was not sure what that ment, before reading this book. I have to say that many things in the book are "no brainers" when you think about them. The book is good because it brings it all together. It is a good guide to help you avoid the mines in the mine field called "casual business"

                                Book Description

What the classic Good Neighbors did for urban multi-family housing, this book will do for single family housing in non-urban areas. It will inspire--here and abroad--the creation of affordable, sustainable, and customized dwellings that use local materials and vernacular styles. This timely resource offers methods that produce housing at a fraction of the cost of traditional and modular alternatives. It emphasizes self-expression in design and building, self-ownership along the lines of HUD's new policies, and the use of environmentally sustainable materials.

I'm surprised that this is the first review here for 'Housing Ourselves', but if you haven't read this book already, you should buy it now. Or at least go to your bookstore and read it.

'Housing Ourselves' essentially is a theoretical manual for the construction of affordable and sustainable rural houses; not to say that practical applications and examples are absent, or that the ideas can't be used on a suburban or urban lot, but I think Burnham himself makes the point that he's writing this book for the owner-builder out on the land.

Regardless, this is one of the very few books I've seen written for the every-day family who wants to build well, sustainably, and for the future on a budget; in addition, it's an idea-rich and inspirational book for affordable housing in general.

Read it as a how-to manual, read it as an essay on how to get back to affordable and sustainable design simply and for the long haul, but just read it. It's well-illustrated, well-written, and a good gift for your friends who want to build their own house.

                                        Book Description

Béla Bartók, who died in New York fifty years ago this September, is one of the most frequently performed twentieth-century composers. He is also the subject of a rapidly growing critical and analytical literature. Bartók was born in Hungary and made his home there for all but his last five years, when he resided in the United States. As a result, many aspects of his life and work have been accessible only to readers of Hungarian. The main goal of this volume is to provide English-speaking audiences with new insights into the life and reception of this musician, especially in Hungary.

Part I begins with an essay by Leon Botstein that places Bartók in a large historical and cultural context. László Somfai reports on the catalog of Bartók's works that is currently in progress. Peter Laki shows the extremes of the composer's reception in Hungary, while Tibor Tallián surveys the often mixed reviews from the American years. The essays of Carl Leafstedt and Vera Lampert deal with his librettists Béla Balázs and Melchior Lengyel respectively. David Schneider addresses the artistic relationship between Bartók and Stravinsky.

Most of the letters and interviews in Part II concern Bartók's travels and emigration as they reflected on his personal life and artistic evolution. Part III presents early critical assessments of Bartók's work as well as literary and poetic responses to his music and personality.

Dinosaurs are among the examples of extinct species examined here along with giant tortoises, passenger pigeons, and the dodo. Good discussion of environmental risk.

This is the story of how a comfortable middle class Jewish family dealt with the political and economic turmoil caused by the end of the Czar's reign and the onset of Communist government in Russia and how it eventually made its way to Weimar Germany where it prospered once again, only to have to leave when the Nazi rule made continued life in Berlin impossible. Provides riveting vignettes of how the cataclysmic events that shook the world between 1914 and 1945 dramatically effected the author's own life and those around him in many walks of life.

And Then There Was One... is a riveting personal saga that spans nations, and offers a very personal view of cataclysmic events that reshaped human history and the world. Enhanced with an appendix, bibliography, and index, And Then There Was One... is highly recommended reading.

(...)Twentieth century lives are often studies in chaos, disruption, and just one damned thing after another. For Michael Stone, born in 1910, it's a century of the murder of Jews and of coming to America and having the freedom to build a successful life. But a successful and culture life was Stone's in Latvia, born into a family of prosperous entrepreneurs. Memories, experiences, fascinating bits of information—The Cotton Club, speeches in Columbus Circle, in the Latvian army, upbringing, siblings and parents, and meeting European men and women who, through their experiences, would define the times. But also there is the malady of the century: the Nazi murder of Jews. A horrifying depiction of the roundup of the Jews of Riga: "Those actions were representative of a number of carefully planned acts of extermination of Jews, not only in various cities in Latvia, but also in other parts of Nazi-occupied regions in Europe." And the terrible personal experiences of Stone. "My initial reaction to being transferred from the hands of the Gestapo to the regular, green-uniformed police calmed me a bit." In an important sense, this is a modern American life: coming from war-torn Europe, a man prospers but remembers, for future generations, the terrible things done in Europe. And it is a history of all of Europe as that history affected poor, helpless people. Stone remembers in a thoughtful, scrupulously detailed way: And Then There Was One is a clearheaded and instructive memoir, related with passion, and with enormous sorrow(...)

Unlike traditional history books, which are written many years after events have actually occurred, this unusual book tells of the cataclysmic world events of the the first half of the last century from the perspective of one who was there. The reader will get a graphic description of the different cultures, customs and events as they then existed.

There are not many people today who can say that they were acctually present in Moscow when the Bolshevic revolution was unfolding. Michael Stone was there. In this meticulously researched volume, Mr. Stone vividly describes how he survived the bloody two-year civil war when his mother was brutally killed. He goes on to describe his family's flight from Russia to the Weimar Republic. He provides a first-hand account of the World War II from the German perspective. Mr. Stone writes with passion about his experience of being arrested by the Gestapo on charges of high treason, which carried a mandatory sentence of decapitation (He was ultimately pardoned by Hermann Goering, personally!) We are fortunate that Mr. Stone, who was thrust into the middle of the century's greatest historic events, survived to preserve the truth from his unique perspective.

This is a must read for all history buffs.
