5 out of 5 stars most inspiring book about general aviation.......2007-07-24

I have been following Greg Brown's columns in AOPA Flight Training for a while now, but I would have never guessed that if you read a handful of these short, factual-yet-full-of-emotions stories one after the other, you can get a complete picture of what general aviation is all about. Highly recommend this book to everyone, pilot spouses or parents above all.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-05-19

I've followed Greg Brown's column in numerous aviation magazines over the years, and have always looked forward to reading his latest adventure. Now, with "Flying Carpet", he has detailed stories and events from his past that have served to educate, enlighten, and amuse both aviators and non-aviators alike. I thoroughly enjoy his writing style, and am always recounting something he wrote to someone else to emphasize a point or provide an example of some aviation-related subject. I love the fact that he relates his stories as if aviation was a sort of pagan religion, and he, and all other pilots, are willing followers. He truly highlights the romance and passion that flying evokes in those of us do it, and stimulates curiousity in those who don't. I highly encourage anyone to read this book, whether you're a pilot or not.

                        4 out of 5 stars Interesting........2007-03-19

Full of fun interesting stories but not a book I would want to read again. The books sounds like it is a collection of Gregs adventures that may have been published somewhere before.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot give this a review........2006-11-05

This book was purchased as a gift. I do not know if it's been read or not.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for all seeking adventure.......2005-05-18

I am a student pilot and have been reading just about everything I can get my hands on that has to do with flying for the past two years. I first learned of Greg Brown through his Flying Carpet column in AOPA's Flight Training magazine and enjoyed his articles and writing. I stumbled upon this book through a search on Amazon and am so glad I did!

The book is extremely well written and you can tell through each page how deep Greg's passion is for flying and for sharing it with those around him. I felt as if I were along for the ride to all of the wonderful destinations he has been to.

I highly recommend the book not only for those interested in flying but the non-fliers alike!

5 out of 5 stars Making characters for your dollhouses.......2007-02-14

Carrington is a genius in making and then teaching us to make, really ALIVE dollhouse dolls full of character. His instructions on those faces are incredible and you'll find yourself looking in the mirror checking out your own cheekbones, or frown marks, or whether or not your nose is straight. With this book, you can make dollhouse dolls with real personalities, from sweet young things to floozies, from old farmers to babies. Excellent book. Highly recommended.

                        4 out of 5 stars 1/12 Scale Character Figures.......2007-02-11

Very funny and wonderfully written. I would recommend this book to people who do any thing in art or sculpting. Mr. Carrington, makes you look at people in a new light. And you learn a lot at getting the "perfect character" face for your small people. The only thing I could have wished for in this book, was a few more real pictures of the model in progress. Other than that, I couldn't have asked for a better book.

                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-11-20

I have tried to get into Jamie's classes on a couple of occasions only to have them fill up before I could sign up...I was thrilled when he came out with this book. I also just purchased his videos to accompany the book. He has updated some of his techniques--but not drastically. You will not be disappointed in anything you learn from this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book should have MORE than 5 stars!!!.......2003-02-04

A clear, beautifully illustrated-(both photos and drawings) how-to-book on the fascinating subject of making character figures to people your doll-house,diorama,room setting,etc..Extremely well written by the charmingly wry and witty(as only the English can be) James Carrington

                        Book Description

The only thing better than one boring building is hundreds of them. Far from the glamorous and avant-garde architectural features that make Los Angeles justifiably famous are the humble apartment buildings known as "dingbats." But Pretty Vacant dares to elevate the low-rise, the boxy, the not remarkably well-constructed to the architecturally sublime. In this inexpensive brick of a book, through scads of photographs of these underappreciated gems, their boundless surfacey charms are soon obvious. Combining funky textures, streamlined sconces, and future-retro ornamentation, these buildings practically define LA vernacular in their optimistic mix of mid-century modishness and darling details. Clive Piercy's photographs provide a streetside glimpse into the curious lives of these buildings, with charming names that range from the regal (Kings Studios) to the space-age (The Galaxie). Assembled in a compact but weighty package with more than 480 images, Pretty Vacant provides a snapshot tour and kitschy homage to this underdog architectural form.

                        5 out of 5 stars A brick of a book........2003-11-26

The publisher's trade catalog for this book says 'The only thing better than one boring building is hundreds of them' and the photographer Clive Piercy says of his images 'This is not a book about architecture-or photography. It is a visual poem, a love letter and a simple attempt to help preserve these fantastic, quirky characters'. Well, maybe and this chunky little book delivers 480 photos of them. Piercy was struck by the LA apartment that has the design characteristic of having an open to the street ground floor parking space the width of the building.

Flicking through the pages you get the impression that maybe the local builders have formed a cartel to make sure their efforts look as identical as possible, so to add a little bit of individual flavor to their apartments many owners have fixed large numbers or names to the buildings (set in appropriate typestyles: Atomic Bold Italic or Googie Casual Cursive) Piercy photographed many examples of this building detail and being a designer I found these fascinating. A thing I found rather disappointing though, was that nearly all the photos are in black and white and the reproduction makes them look rather grey (I wonder if they were originally transparencies?) so to break up this greyness color graphic elements are scattered through the pages, mostly type dingbats, how appropriate!

Piercy is not the only photographer to celebrate the 'Pretty Vacant' style, Jeff Brouws in his lovely book of color photos, 'Readymades' (ISBN 0811836770) has a chapter devoted to ticky tacky homes in Daly City, California, especially interesting because he sought out homes that were painted in bright colors. Lewis Baltz photographed pretty vacant commercial units in his famous 'The New Industrial Parks near Irvine, California' (ISBN 0963078569)

I bet a copy of 'Pretty Vacant' will be popping up on the coffee tables of architects, designers and those interested in pop Americana.

5 out of 5 stars Children Expressing Feelings.......2005-08-30

This book takes the child into the world of his/her feelings; to identify, acknowledge, and deal with feelings as a natural part of one's self. Most children love to draw and feelings that are hard to verbalize can be expressed in art. The child can also work at his/her own pace. As the child owns the book so too can the child "own" his/her own feelings. It is a great tool for the therapist, school counselor and the parent.

                        4 out of 5 stars A strong biography........1998-05-23

Delannoy's biography brings together most of the information that can be verified about the life of Young and melds it with a poetic appreciation of his importance as an artist and his suffering as a human being. Simply by relating Young's life story, Delannoy leaves no doubt that major emotional crises transformed Pres from a hard working young musician with a sunny outlook into a paranoid who developed his already eccentric behavior and language as defense mechanisms. Delannoy's strenght as a biographer is in making it clear that the gifts left by Young's genius transcend his bedeviled life

5 out of 5 stars This is a meaty book........1998-05-23

Not only is Luc Delannoy's LESTER YOUNG both scholarly and entertaining; it is a fresh, thought-provoking biography, penned with affection, that breaks new grounds. Delannoy is the first jazz historian I know of to show exactly what Lester meant when he'd quiet tell all those early, prying interviewers: "Frankie Trumbauer was my idol." Also, Delannoy has gone to the trouble of studying the transcript of Lester's Army court hearings, which brightens the light we can now shine into the darker corners of that dreadful wartime experience.

                          Book Description

Benjamin Disraeli utilizes previously ignored or little known sources to provide new insights into how one of the most famous Jewish converts was viewed by the Jewish community he ignored and by the larger Christian world that would not accept him. This book shows how a myth can take on a life of its own in the collective memory of the Jewish people, as well as in the thought processes of a variety of anti-Semitic groups. Its fresh approach to the life and lore of a colorful Victorian figure also raises the issue of ethnic identity and minority acceptance in our pluralistic society.

                                Book Description

Intellectual historians generally view the Enlightenment as a pacifist or anti-war movement. Military historians typically consider 18th century military thinkers as backward-looking and inept. Speelman challenges the views of both groups through a consideration of the writings of Henry Lloyd, a soldier and Welsh philosophe who combined enlightened thought and military experience to distill a distinct theory of war. Based on previously unused or underutilized primary materials, this is the first biography of this key enlightenment thinker who advanced the general understanding of war as it existed in his day. Lloyd wrote a multivolume history of the Seven Years' War from which he derived the "Principles of War"; a treatise on economics that prefigured the liberal theories of Adam Smith; a rhapsody on the invasion and defense of Great Britain; and finally an anonymous critique of the English constitution that he used to demand political and electoral reform. Overall, he argued for the reform of military institutions and practices through breaking from custom and traditional norms. In his works, Lloyd examined warfare within the larger context of secular philosophy and human society; and, thus, he personified the link between the military society and the Enlightenment that historians often ignore or discount.

It includes lots of practical advice with examples of how necessary research is a part of the fundraising process. I recommend it for both large and small nonprofit organizations.

For Sale By Owner is a four step program that teaches individuals to sell their own homes in a correct and professional manner. It teaches them how to price their home correctly, how to properly present their home, how to market it effectively and how to close the sale.

WARNING: Lee Burbidge IS a "sleazy salesman", through and through. I worked for him and his sons for a few years, and became very intimately acquainted with their business practices. Lee's son Brae, by the way, interestingly enough also posted a review on this page (see the September 10th entry). I'd be suspect of any review of this "book" posted from their homebase of Utah. The Burbidge's are not interested in providing quality services to the public. They are long-time seminar shysters who will take advantage of anyone unlucky enough to wander into their web.

I can guarantee the people that sold their houses in one day didn't need this "book" to do it. They would have sold regardless. There's very little real information in here. It basically tells you to clean up your house and make it presentable (common sense). Most of the audio talks about writing a newspaper add (just read some of the ones by realtors and mimic their styles). It really lacks the most important information needed by any home seller, marketing. Newspaper ads can work, but it shouldn't be the only technique used. The author doesn't even touch other areas of marketing like flyers, grocery stores, local businesses, the internet, or sending letters to all your neighbors offering a finder's fee. He also assumes everyone sells houses in the summer and fails to talk about what to do in the off peak times.

Most of the photocopied examples you can get from any decent real-estate attorney. Since you'll probably hire one anyway, save your money on this waste of paper.

I'm a real estate agent who work mostly with Buyer, a Buyer Agent. I use the package to introduce myself to "for seller by owners" because I know that most of them need help in selling their house and that they will become buyers when they do. This "for sale by owner" package has been successful for me as well as the people I give one too. It is a great well done workbook, video and audio tape presentation. It teaches the basics in easy to understand terms. I recommend it to agents who are looking for business builders and to anyone who is trying to sell their own home. It is easy for anyone who is new to the real estate field to understand and use. Buy it and try it. It works for professionals who are providing service added marketing and for the new comer.

                                      Don't buy this!

The "book" is a bunch of photocopied papers, many of which are just there as space filler (e.g., a ream of sample appraisal forms -- you already saw these when you bought your house, there's no need to see multiple pages of the appraisal form for another propert).

The video is especially bad; it just drips sleaze. It conveys the image of the sleazy salesman remininscent of the cheap promotional videos that you'll occasionally catch on the TV.

I bought the kit and followed the instruction. With some luck, I sold my house in one day open house. The kit is still brand new. I am going sell it in the auction site. Thanks to the author. It is my first time selling house by my own and I know nothing about the selling before I got this kit. It is a wonderful experiences.

This memoir is by the man who created the Broadway hits "Hello Dolly!," "Mame," and "La Cage Aux Folles." The self-described "Mr. Show Business, the razzmatazz musical comedy writer, a cheerful man whose life is dedicated to making people smile and feel good and leave the theater humming a show tune," Jerry Herman takes readers on a sentimental journey, retracing his steps toward big-time success and occasional disappointment. Though Herman relates losing his lover to AIDS, and tells of his own HIV status, of plagiarism disputes, and of in-fighting with Broadway producers, his tone remains conversational and cheerfully upbeat.

Showtune: A Memoir is one of the most in-depth memoir of a Broadway composer we have ever seen. It includes his childhood up to date of publication. Highlighted by touching memories and splendid photographs, Showtune is a must-have for any fan of the Great American Musical, let alone theater in general.

Jerry Herman's story of how a shy, quiet boy grew up to be one of the best-loved Broadway composers of all time is delightful. All lovers of Broadway music will enjoy this wonderful book, and the chance to "meet" Jerry, his terrific mother who inspired one of his most popular songs, and the rest of his mostly-merry gang of friends, family members and theatrical legends. There's plenty of behind-the-scenes shenanigans and information about musical technique that serious theater students will find informative, too.

Anyone reading this review is undoubtedly familiar with Jerry Herman's great works for the American Musical Theatre. What makes this book courageous, as well, is his unstinting, unsentimental examination of his private life as an HIV-positive gay man. It is a story of joy and triumph in the most profound meaning of the words.

If you're already a fan of Jerry Herman's music, this will only enhance your enjoyment. If not, you'll still gain some insights into the making of a Broadway show. But if you're a serious student of the American musical theatre stage, there's not much here. Herman's memoir reads like a friendly conversation, over coffee after a good dinner. Better still, he sprinkles quotes from his lyrics liberally throughout his reminiscences. Herman talks about the actresses and actors who created his characters, and occasionally talks about himself. But not in depth, nor do you gain any real insight into Jerry Herman the private man. But you do get a glimpse of Jerry Herman, author of three, count them, musicals that ran for over 1,500 performances each. It's a treat, but a bit too sweet, almost cloying. But it's Jerry Herman, who can definitely say, "I am what I am!"

A great upbeat memoir by the man who gave us great shows, such as Mame, Hello Dolly and the wonderful Mac and Mabel. This book is a classic, like the musicals. He is so full of life and a genuine fondness for both people and theater. I liked his stress on his lyrics, which are what he does best. Our best lyricist- composer of oldfashioned musicals and show tunes. I couldn't put the book down. I hope Jerry Herman writes some more musicals. I also hope he writes another book
