Woodrow Wilson is perceived as the epitome of the modern idealist who took the United States into World War I to make the world safe for democracy; however, this book will show that this view of Wilson is fraught with more than the usual distortions. With the end of the Cold War and the publication of the full body of Wilson's papers, it is now possible to examine Wilson in a new and more complete light. The tensions between Wilson's private ambitions and his public role refute the main stereotype of him as an idealist.

a flat-footed biography.......2002-12-09
This is a poorly written book on an interesting subject, that benefits from the fact that there aren't other biographies on Malaspina in English, or any comprehensive historian account on the entire voyage at a comparative price range. It's neither a serious scholarly work nor an exciting biography, so it's pretty much a disappoiting book. For a much better, scholarly, publication, see "The Malaspina Expedition 1789 to 1794", published by the Haklyut Society. It has a good introduction, and the transcription of Malaspina's introduction to his never-published travel account.

It is widely believed that globalization has proceeded to the point where international economic linkages are as strong as those within nations. Struck by research suggesting that this perception is dramatically mistaken, John Helliwell spent three years assessing the evidence. The results are reported in this book, the latest in Brookings' Integrating National Economies series. It provides the most systematic measurements yet available of the relative importance of global and national economic ties. The original finding, based on a gravity model of trade flows, was that 1988 trade linkages between Canadian provinces were twenty times as dense as those between Canadian provinces and U.S. states of similar size and distance. A much longer and more detailed body of data is used to expand and explain these findings. Data for trade within and among OECD and some developing countries are used to show that the Canadian-U.S. results are applicable to other countries. Helliwell then surveys and extends the evidence relating to price linkages, capital mobility, migration, and knowledge spillovers, finding in all cases very large border effects. The evidence offers a challenge to economists, policymakers, and citizens to explain why national economies have so much staying power, and to consider whether this is a good or bad thing. Helliwell argues that since large and small industrial economies have similar levels of income, there are likely to be diminishing returns from increases in globalization beyond levels sufficient to permit the ready exploitation of comparative advantages in trade, and relatively easy access to knowledge developed elsewhere.

This study examines how the shared cultural values of employees in a Polish firm influence management attempts top transform organizational practices in a newly privatized factory. By introducing a foreign management approach, Total Quality Management (TQM), the management of this factory presents a potential conflict of values between the employees and the management philosophy. Tracing the historical and contemporary impact of traditional, political and religious influences in Poland and utilizing ethnographic techniques of observation, interviews, and secondary source data, the author identifies four patterns of shared mindsets. These mindsets, insecurity and instability, distrust, reluctance to assume responsibility and a struggle between individualism and collectivism generate resistance to the successful implementation of TQM in this factory.
Organizational studies research has identified cultural differences in values but previous studies have not examined the congruence assessment that employeesmake when confronted with a management intervention, such as TQM. The author finds that an incongruence between societal values and the values the employees perceive are embedded in the TQM approach produced actual outcomes that are not consistent with TQM objectives of empowerment, teamwork, visionary leadership and continuous improvement of quality. Employees demonstrated a reduced sense of empowerment, team goals that are counterproductive to organizational goals, autocratic leadership and an increased focus but not sustainable effort toward improving quality.
The book examines the reasons for these results through detailed description and extensive quotations from employees both inside the Polish firm and throughout Polish society.

I passed Part 3 the first time..........2007-02-25
I used this book to study for Part 3 in 2006. I had not had accounting classes in over 12 years - but I am an IT professional. I passed the test on the first try - so I give the book credit for helping me prepare for the exam. The Questions/Answers were of the biggest benefit. I also used the IIA's extra questions/answers CD which was helpful.

Better fit than older folders........2006-07-31
This version folder allows the coins to fit in much more easily. No longer that thumb-numbing fight I put up with the last few years.
Just one problem.......2004-05-06
Previous reviewers who said the holes are too small are right. It's almost impossible to insert quarters with just your hands. I found that it's not so hard when you use some kind of tool to help you, though.
First, place the folder on a solid flat surface. Then position the quarter correctly, and push it in as much as you can by hand. Now find something to help you get it in the rest of the way without damaging it. I used the rubber-coated handle of a pair of pliers. Place the tool on the edge of the coin that's still sticking up, and apply pressure to force it into the hole.
After I got the quarters into my folder, they looked fine. There was no noticable damage. Though the hole size is annoying, this is still a good folder, and I would recommend it, especially if you already have Statehood Quarters #1.
The Holes Don't Fit the Quarters!.......2003-02-25
I used the first Whitman binder for the first three years of the statehood quarters and it held the quarters pretty well. But something strange happened when they made the binders for years 4 through 7 (Vol. 2) and 8 through 10 (Vol. 3). They must have got the idea that the U.S. Mint shrunk the size of the quarter, because it is almost impossible to fit the quarters in the slots. All have to be raised up on an end to fit snugly, but it looks awful. That didn't work for me, so I have found another binder that does a better job. It's hard to believe the leading coin book maker missed the boat on this one.
Statehood Quarters#2.......2003-01-19
I am very unhappy with the new Statehood Quarter #2 book. I purchased 2 and wasted my money. The quarters do not fit in the slots that were made for them. The slots are way too small. I had to manually enlarge the slot in order to use the books.

One of the best overall books.......2003-04-08
I have about 300 origami books and have designed several hundred of my own models and Origami Made Easy is still the book I most recommend.
Kunihiko Kasahara is one of the most prolific origami writers. Origami Made Easy is one of his older books but it has been constantly in print and that is rare in origami books.
The book is nicely organized in sections by theme and the drawings are quite clear. The diagrams follow the standard Yoshizawa\Randlett style using just diagrams and almost no text to show how to fold figures.
Some of my favorite models are in this book, including my favorite peacock.
I have always felt it was best to learn origami by example with a teacher or tutor and not straight from a book (as I was forced to do), but for folders just getting into the art I would always recommend this book.

this book is good for giving instruction on the different forms of folds but the illistrations and diagrams are were this book lacks. the diagrams are there but there is only one or two explinations of the different steps. I find it very hard to follow instructions when all I see is a picture telling me to do something and I don't have an explination. so I say if your in need of learning how to make certain folds then by all means use this book but using it to learn how to make an item is very difficult and I don't recomend this book.
Good basic book for beginners.......2001-05-07
This was one of my first origami books. I now have several dozen origami books, but I still come back to this for a few models every now and then.
It is a very good book for learning/teaching the basics, and the models reflect the attribute I most admire in Kasahara's work - elegance. Be they simple or complicated, Mr. Kasahara's models have just the right balance of detail, to make them look full, and restraint, to avoid looking forced.
This makes an excellent introduction to origami, not only in its instruction of the techniques of paper-folding but also in the esthetics of what makes a model successful.
Good for children and beginners, but very short.......2000-07-15
This is a pretty short basic origami book. It has simplemodels that are fairly well illustrated. It's geared more towardschildren or for classroom use. Frankly, I felt ripped off taking this book out of the library. There are better uses of your origami dollars. I could see this, along with a pack of paper, making a nice gift for a child. I would definitely not buy it for someone past 12.

This is a wonderful book for the lover of the old English cottage painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is filled with full colored pictures on every page of the paintings and describes life in these times. A great addition to anyone's library who is interested in these times and the painter's who so aptly captured a way of life long gone. Paintings by Allingham, Strachan, Stannard, Foster and others are included.

Daycare search relief.......2000-03-28
Being the typical anxious parent with worries about daycare upon my return to work, I found Ms. Ehrich's information about researching daycare centers to be an invaluable part of her book. It was really a stress reducer. There were many valuable insights in a well written, easy to understand book. Being a NJ resident, I saw an article about Ms. Ehrich in a local newspaper whereby it mentioned the anxiousparents.com website. It is well worth a viist there too. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to find stable, quality help with your daycare needs. It gave me the direction and confidence I needed, especially since I am a first time Mom.

I have read the book and am just embarking on my own search for quality childcare. I was surprised to read the review of another from NJ who said the book was not helpful for daycare situations. I am seeking a daycare center environment for my child and found the book invaluable. As this is my first, I am the anxious parent as described. Ms. Ehrich's book gave me the confidence and direction to channel my search in a productive and time-efficient way. The guidelines for daycare interviewing and selection focused me and gave me many things to investigate and interview for. Thank you Ms. Ehrich for this most valuable resource.
Not for families searching for Daycare Centers.......2000-02-12
Unfortunately I found the book to be too slanted towards family home care or nannys - these are not viable options for everyone. I found there was no fair balance given to daycare centers. While the checklists/questions were comprehensive the author's overall condescending tone put a damper on the information presented. For anyone whose main alternative is a daycare center, this is not the book for you - save your money.

As an obstetrical nurse and working mom, I have both a personal and professional interest in childcare issues. Over the past ten years, I have read literally dozens of childcare help books. This book is by far the best - the most common sense, encouraging, informative and easy to use. It has a permanent place on my bookshelf - and I am telling all my patients about it too. If you are buying only one book on finding childcare, it should definitely be this one!
