    Book Description

Judge Joe Cannon was a magnet for controversy. "I didn't seek the headlines," he wrote. "The headlines sought me." Everyone on both sides of the law knew where he stood: tough on crime and criminals. He ran his court with an iron fist. But his integrity was never challenged.

Cannon recounts many of the "first impression" cases he tried that had a major impact on Oklahoma's judicial system and society. Told with warmth and good humor, the book captures the feeling and excitement of the courtroom.

Foreword by Andrew M. Coats, Dean of Oklahoma University Law School.

4 out of 5 stars George Tweed's "Robinson Crusoe USN".......2005-12-28

This book is a fascinating view into the mind of a man escaping and evading. His techniques are timeless and still taught today in contemporary military escape and evasion schools, and as such makes for powerful lessons for military members subject to capture. Very interesting look into a different world view, the lack of polish and sophistication of the narrative is a breath of fresh air and intensely personal. The text and accompanying endnotes hint broadly that there may be more to the story than what we are given and other viewpoints that may not agree with RM1 Tweed's, but that does not detract from the book. A must for anyone with even a passing interest in the island and people of Guam or the saga of a trapped military man evading escape for years on a small island during WWII.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating story about WWII!.......1998-11-06

I first saw the movie starring Jeffrey Hunter when I was little. It was one of those movies that always came on late at night, but I always stayed up to watch it. I have read the book, and actually own a hardback copy signed by Mr. Tweed himself. I spent 3 years on Guam and visited the sight of his dwelling. I won't call it a cave, because it was just a small living space between two vertical rocks. Amazing he could live there and evade capture for 22 months. It was heartwarming the way the locals protected him from capture, even though some of them paid the ultimate price for doing so. Great story about one mans struggle to survive against heavy odds and how he remained close to those he befriended up until the time of his death.

"How will it be in winter," he cried, "when it is cold, and I have no fire?" He must try other ways of preparing meat for his table. He must think of some other way of getting fire. He remembered that once, when a boy at home, he had in playing with a stick made it hot by twirling it on end on a piece of wood. "I will try this," he thought. He searched for a good hard stick and a piece of wood upon which to turn or twirl it with his hands. Having found the best materials at hand, he began to twirl the stick. He made a little hollow in the block of wood in which to turn his upright stick.

                      Book Description

An account that delves into what poor Crusoe must have been up to, those long years on his island. The Sexual Life of Robinson Crusoe is a well-written guide to onanism, beastiality, homosexuality, memory and the power of fantasy. Author Richardson (Michael Gall) was a close friend of Olympia Press founder Maurice Girodias, as evidenced by the celebratory preface. This work is a comic classic that could hardly have been produced anywhere else.

                        Book Description

The practical aspects of applying double tax conventions (DTCs) have increased in importance for tax authorities and tax payers, as DTCs grow in both numbers and complexity. Although they are normally matters of internal law, receiving limited international attention, their importance is becoming more and more substantial. This book surveys issues reported from member states, looking for best practices -- and noting problems -- that range from self-authorized claims or ready advance rulings to complex clearance procedures, or substantial uncertainties for topics such as residence claims and withholding taxes.

                          Book Description

The boom of the U.S. economy in the late 1990s suggests that Americans are better off than they were a decade ago, but this is not true across the board and the reason, as James Galbraith explains, is wage inequality. He contends that inequality is not the result of impersonal market forces but of specific government decisions and the poor economic performance they created. Featuring a new afterword on wage shifts since 1994, Created Unequal is a rousing book that reminds us we can reclaim our country through economic understanding, commonsense policy, and political action.

"Created Unequal is not light reading, but Galbraith's elegant arguments, passionate exposition, and profound conclusions make it worth the trouble. . . . [Galbraith] remind[s] us that the economy is and ought to be run by humans, not humans by the economy."—Joanna Ciulla, Los Angeles Times Book Review

"Created Unequal is a lucid and wise explanation of why America seems to be prospering while most Americans aren't. James Galbraith takes steady aim at a variety of widely accepted economic myths and hits most of them dead center. This book will tell you a lot about the way your economic world really works."—Jeff Faux, President of the Economic Policy Institute

"[A] brilliant and iconoclastic examination of the major social trend of our time."—Michael Lind, Washington Monthly

5 out of 5 stars Wage determined by Supply-demand, buyer-seller. Liberty to buy-sell-trade-commerce.......2006-04-01

Wages are determined by Supply-demand, buyer-seller. Liberty to buy-sell-trade-commerce in a free society.

In a free society with free citizens, as opposed to state-enforced police state like north korea or cuba,
prices and hence wages are determined by supply-demand, demand-supply.

                          Price is where supply-demand meet.

Witness gold, silver, oil, all traded globally with a price determined by supply-demand.

Why is Wal-Mart on the #1 on the Fortune 500 and Fortune Global 500. Simple: quality products at low prices.

Why is Toyota the #1 car-builder and GM and Ford going almost bankrupt. Simple. Toyota can build quality cars at "reasonable" prices.

Consumer want quality products-services at at low prices. True at all places and at all times.

Wages are also determined by supply-demand. Being a retail service clerk is Not going to earn an NBA salary.

Wages in a free society, as wages for pro football, basebll, and basketball are set by the free market of supply-demand.

True today and unlikely to change anytime soon.

Galbraith has exempted himself from either the "marketplace" and the "customer", like father, like son, with a phony, fake, welfare-for-academic job like a professor at the University of Texas.

If you are so smart, why aren't you in the real world making it.

From Yale to Harvard to Cambridge, to Univ of Texas. . From one ivory tower to another ivory until retirement.

Typical "ivory tower pinhead". What a massive fraud. The rest of us have to actually work for a living. Lifelong "ivory tower pinhead".

Those who do not live in reality write books about un-reality. That's what this silly little book is about.

4 out of 5 stars Technically solid, but weaker on policy arguments.......2001-02-23

"Created Unequal" is an impressive work of economic analysis of wage and wealth inequality. Although the book occasionally gets into some relatively rigorous economics, it should be accessible to the determined lay reader.

Professor Galbraith's central thesis is that the amount of wage inequality (the difference between what the wealthiest make and what the poorest make) is tied directly to a number of key factors: the unemployment rate, the interest rate, the strength of the dollar, and so on. Essentially, the lower the unemployment rate, the less the degree of wage inequality. I am simplifying his thesis considerably here, but this is the essence of it. There is a considerable amount of technical research presented that supports the thesis and demonstrating a strong correlation between wage inequality and unemployment.

So, Professor Galbraith makes a persuasive case that the government can affect wage inequality by making certain policy decisions, such as lowering unemployment, raising the minimum wage, weakening the dollar against international currencies, and so on.

But, what is missing from the book is a serious justification of why the free market should not dictate the value of labor. In other words, from a normative standpoint, why should workers be paid two or three or more times the value of their labor? There are egalitarian arguments to be made, of course, but at the same time, if the value of Bill Gates' labor is, say, 100 times more valuable than the work of a custodian, why should Gates' wages be limited to, say, 30 times that of custodian? (At one point, Professor Galbraith suggests a 30-1 limitation.)

In the end, this is an impressive and valuable work. You may or may not agree with the policy decisions that Professor Galbraith supports, but his analysis must be reckoned with.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling case that politics affects wages........1999-06-19

Galbraith provides a cogent, well-documented argument that instability has more to do with wage inequality than does a mechanism for market efficiency. "When the ocean is flat, rowboats and dinghies can join the trawlers out on the reef where the fish are running. But in a gale, the little boats sink while the large ones do not." He argues that reasonable wages obtain from low unemployment and that expecting science and technology to act as the "centerpiece of a progressive agenda is absurd." Highly recommended.

Polititians and business people in Europe often recommend to learn from the US. But usually they don't tell the full story. Galbraith's book does.

4 out of 5 stars An eye opening look at the american wage structure........1999-05-27

Created Unequal begins by telling the reader that the book will discuss the gap between the highly skilled employee and the unskilled. Mr. Galbraith begins by dicussing the chamge in monetary policy since the 1970's and the change in the labor force, as well. Since the 70's more women and minorities have joined the labor force and the U.S. has enjoyed a prospering economy and slipped into a recession. The main focus of the book is discovering what caused such a huge gap between the skilled and unskilled. One possible solution Mr. Galbraith suggests is the rise in the number of college bound and college graduates in the past twenty years. The increase in education has forced employers to pay these higher skilled employees a greater wage. Another possible answer, which directly relates to education, is the advancement of technology, namely the personal computer. As more and more computer were, and are, becoming part of the business world employers needed to find employees who knew how to operate the new machines. In the beginning, these employees were a rare find and thus, could demand a higher wage. This solution, the most popular among modern economists, is rejected by Galbraith. He states that the rise in education came before the introduction of the personal computer. The technicality and dryness of the book was to be expected as it is a study on a dry science. We did, however, find that the book presented a new outlook on the way sociery functions. The gap between the rich and the poor is large, and ever widening. There no longer exsists a middle class who can keep the balance and rock the vote on Republican, rich favoring policies. Mr. Galbraith is an excellent economist who writes technically on a topic of intrest to everyone.

Following the tremendous success of his first book on the subject, The Queens of Burlesque, Len Rothe has again pulled from his collection of original photographs of entertainers this delightful selection of over 100 images of Burlesque stars. Together with a revealing text that introduces burlesque to today's new audience, these photographs retain the surprise and teasing elements that endeared the dancers on stage in the heydays of burlesque shows, before television. In theaters throughout America, striptease dancers entertained grateful audiences. Here are Tempest Storm, Scarlett O'Hara, Lili St. Cyr, Georgia Sothern, and Zorita and her doves. With this book, they look out again with timeless beauty and show you the Bare Truth.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Women from a bygone era.......2003-07-23

Rothe presents a wonderful photographic collection of some of the great stars of burlesque's golden era. Most of the photos appear to have been promotional photos for display on marquees or in hallways of burlesque houses. All of the women are beautiful and must have been fabulous to see in performance. Rothe worked in the entertainment industry and it would be interesting for him to record his memories of these women. But until then, these photos will serve as reminders of a generation of beautiful performers.

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert: A Carving Book Worth Owning.......2007-06-27

I have an extensive library of carving books to include the two classics "Raptors" and "Owls" by Floyd Scholz. Lori Corbett's book has earned a place among my finest carving books. It is well conceived, well organized and clearly written. Steps in carving are logical and easy to follow; yet, not trite. The writing is crisp and interesting. While there are many, many books on carving Lori's sets a high standard for others to strive. In all aspects this book excels to include pictures, illustrations, diagrams, and both carving and painting instructions. I recommend that if a carver can only afford one book of instruction and inspiration, then purchase Lori's "Carving Award Winning Songbirds" -- and at half the price of most other books! In the near future, I shall attempt to learn whether Lori can instruct as well as she can write. My thanks for a marvelous book. Mel Donaho, long time carver and instructor

5 out of 5 stars THE most complete bird carving book.......2007-03-02

Simply the most comprehensive manual on bird carving that I own.

Most books suffer some kind of short-coming. Muehlmatt's book is good, but lacks painting information. Hillman's are totally worthless..

But this book covers everything....painting, habitat, anatomy...everything.

If you are new to bird carving...buy this book FIRST! If you are a seasoned carver, buy it because you will learn something from it.

                                Book Description

From the archives of Britain's first grandmaster comes a fascinating and entertaining collection of games, articles, annotations, and reviews. This is the book Tony Miles would have written had he not died so prematurely in 2001, compiled by three of his close friends, and it contains all of his most famous wins, some of his losses, and some hitherto unpublished games from his earlier years. Among the gems that will intrigue chess lovers: a full run-through of the famous match against Karpov with the St. George's opening 1 e4 a6, as well as a much less well-known victory over the then-world champion from a television tournament. Almost all of the games have commentary by Tony, in his own inimitable style. As well as being a great player, Tony Miles's notes prove that he was one of the funniest writers on the game.

5 out of 5 stars requiem for a lost boy.......2007-09-12

Tony Miles was (he died a few years ago) a magnificent player and among the strongest players in the world between 1980 and 1990. Although he was best remembered for his swift victories using the black side of the Sicilian dragon at the beginning og his career, he was in fact a player with a liking for strategic games and queenless middlegames; he was overshadowed in England
by the rather less interesting (but extremely strong) player known as Nigel Short who was also one of his "bête noire" i.e. most difficult opponent; a crushing match defeat against Garry Kasparov was also instrumental in leading him to a severe nervous breakdown which seriously impaired his chess level; the book tells the story of this well loved player through his most devoted friends; it gives us the chance to meet a very witty and entertaining player who fell prey to the pettyness and low tactics of some other English players much less talented in chess but surely much better connected to the then reigning powers in chess.

Self-reflection by celebrities tends to be fraught with unmentionable difficulties. Not, though, when the star in question is the ever intelligent, self-aware, articulate, and magnificent Isabella Rossellini. For years, a wall in the entrance of Rossellini's apartment has been covered in pictures taken of her by different photographers. Looking at the "Me Wall," Rossellini writes that she never really saw herself; instead she "saw the photographer's work, their ideas, and our collaboration in capturing fantasies." Looking at Me gathers together Rossellini's private collection of portraits taken of herself by some of the world's leading photographers, including Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Michel Comte, Patrick Demarchelier, Fabrizio Ferri, Horst P. Horst, Brigitte Lacombe, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Robert Mapplethorpe, Steven Meisel, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Paolo Roversi, Ellen von Unwerth, and Bruce Weber, as well as filmmakers David Lynch and Wim Wenders. Rossellini invites us to join her as she looks at her favorite portraits, privileging us with her witty, humorous, and self-ironical comments. She traces her career, in photographs, from boxing reporter in Muhammad Ali's training camp to highly successful model, from actress in some of Hollywood's more controversial films to head of her own cosmetic line, Manifesto. Mixed in with these public images are pictures of Rossellini in private, with her children, her dog Macaroni, and her pig Spanky. Irresistibly charming, intelligent yet whimsical, Looking At Me proves the perfect complement to Rossellini herself.

This is a fabulous book, the type that you can sit with for hours and enjoy. It is reminiscent of Sante D'Orazio's first book, but on a much simpler scale. The photos are great, the commentary a little bare-bones but interesting. As a photographer, it's also interesting to see how different photographers have captured the same subject, sometimes more than once. Highly recommended and nicely published.

                                Book Description

Quincy Troupe's candid account of his friendship with Miles Davis is a revealing portrait of a great musician and an intimate study of a unique relationship. It is also an engrossing chronicle of the author's own development, both artistic and personal. As Davis's collaborator on Miles: The Autobiography,Troupe--one of the major poets to emerge from the 1960s--had exceptional access to the musician. This memoir goes beyond the life portrayed in the autobiography to describe in detail the processes of Davis's spectacular creativity and the joys and difficulties his passionate, contradictory temperament posed to the men's friendship. It shows how Miles Davis, both as a black man and an artist, influenced not only Quincy Troupe but whole generations.
Troupe has written that Miles Davis was "irascible, contemptuous, brutally honest, ill-tempered when things didn't go his way, complex, fair-minded, humble, kind and a son-of-a-bitch." The author's love and appreciation for Davis make him a keen, though not uncritical, observer. He captures and conveys the power of the musician's presence, the mesmerizing force of his personality, and the restless energy that lay at the root of his creativity. He also shows Davis's lighter side: cooking, prowling the streets of Manhattan, painting, riding his horse at his Malibu home. Troupe discusses Davis's musical output, situating his albums in the context of the times--both political and musical--out of which they emerged. Miles and Me is an unparalleled look at the act of creation and the forces behind it, at how the innovations of one person can inspire both those he knows and loves and the world at large.

4 out of 5 stars Gets just about as close as you can get to a legend........2006-03-03

I just picked up the "Bitches Brew Complete Sessions" on CD. Troupe has a long essay in the liner notes that are seemingly taken right from this book (or vice versa). Given there are so many Miles Davis books out there, I have to say I really like Quincy Troupe's approach because he is not some music professor or cultural critic analyzing or deconstructing Miles and "the meaning" of his music, blah, blah, blah. Rather, Troupe was there with Miles in the same room, in the car, eating dinner, wherever. That's the real value of this book. If you put Miles on that high pedestal you may not want to read the book: Troupe details some incredibly awkward and tense situations with Miles's temper which made everyone run for cover; but there are also moments of showing Miles with his force field down. One can only imagine how fascinating and frustrating it would be to meet, let alone have a friendship with, one of your idols.

4 out of 5 stars An intriguing view of a Legend........2001-07-21

I enjoyed both books written about Miles by Quince Troupe. In my opinion Troupe has the uncanny ability to write from a perspective that allows a reader to see the personal side of his subject. Troupe's "no holds barred" approach permits the reader to form their own opinion and paint their own picture. This book portrays Miles as both a legend and human being who confronts life's challenges in both positive and negative ways. Be sure to read this book with an open mind. Sometimes it hurts to see our heroes, who we've placed on such a high level fail in some areas of life.

                                4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2001-01-25

I picked up this book not knowing what to expect, hoping mainly to get some insight into one of my favorite musicians. On that level this book delivers. The author was very close friends with Miles through the later stages of his life and the book centers around the time they spent together and Troupe's perceptions of Miles during this time. We learn that Miles, while a brilliant and influencial musician, had his share of flaws and Troupe makes no attempt to cover these up - this book is not for those who cannot conceive seeing their hero portrayed in a sometimes negative light. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was because sometimes the author let his personal views and beliefs get in the way. Personally I would rather read about Miles than Troupe, but oh well, it is his book.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR MILES FANS!.......2000-07-09

I've been a fan of Miles Davis since hearing "Kind of Blue" in 1992. Miles legend precedes him and this book helped me gain a better understanding of him as an artist, musician and man.

I especially liked the way the author used Miles music to recollect his own life--what he was doing and how he felt about each new release. For a fan like me, that gave me a idea of how it would have been to anxiously await each new Miles Davis album.

Quincy Troupe was obviously a fan and a friend. I'm glad he wrote this book.

1 out of 5 stars Miles of Troupe.......2000-05-21

Troupe is an outstanding poet and performer of his words, he was also Miles Davis's biographer, and has written a memoir of that relationship which is redundant, self-serving, fan-mag ooze which makes one reconsider the biography Troupe assembled from taped interviews with Davis, perhaps the most durable and ominpresent jazz soloist since Louis Armstrong. Published by a University press obviously trying to hit the trade marketplace, this slim volume reads like it were much longer.

I am a homeschooling mom who was at her wits' end trying to motivate her kids to write until I found this series. My oldest child is working on Mile 3, and her six year old brother is absolutely loving this book. What kid could resist an activity like "Draw a picture of yourself doing something you like to do," and "Draw a picture of yourself doing something you don't like to do"? You can probably guess where my son drew himself cleaning his room!

I've read this book countless times and I still love it! A great plot, showing the barbaric, hurtful lengths that some of us will go to in the name of keeping our children "pure". Filled with emotion, this book is a must-read. There were times I wanted to cry, and several times that I was cracking up! Great for sparking thoughtful discussions in a classroom or family.

I read this book when I was in middle school and have reread it several times since then. This book shows how simple misunderstandings can lead to great heartache and sorrow. Ms. Miles writes her characters with intelligence and her story is well thought out. I wish this book would be taught in schools but I'm sure that it would find itself in the same predicament as the books in the story. I plan to have my children read this book when they start middle school.

Billie won first place in the Nebraska Press Women's Contest for Non-Fiction Books this year with her memoir, Bertie and Me. Her new book details home remedies, clothing of the early 1900s and the excitement of owning a "talking machine." Plenty of pictures add to the explanation of early roundups (now rodeos) and Model T's. Billie tells how to get our tongue unstuck if you lick the "frosting" from a cold iron bolt in the middle of winter. The book also has an entertaining chapter on privies.

Having grown up in the AOG denomination, and having witnessed much of the corruption of the 70's and 80's, I could believe most of what the author details. It has a gossipy feel...rather "National Enquirer" for the pentecostal set. It kept my interest, although I could have done without the gratuitous description of his first intimate encounter with the woman who would become his wife. The tone is self-pitying, but perhaps he had reason to feel poorly-used by the powers-that-were at the time.

How bizarre (and unbelievable) is this: "Gathered together at that retreat center was a group called Camps Farthest Out (CFO). . . baptism was conducted in this group. A gourd of water with a hose attached was hung from a tree limb . . . the other end of the hose was inserted in the rectum of the person being baptized . . ." (p.238, DCMB, 1989)

I laughed out loud at that nonsense. Brothers and Sisters, we will have a baptism today at the old oak!

He had me going until THAT. Now, although I accept some of what he says, I wonder, Does this man have a problem? A deep problem?

...parts of this are hard to believe. Mr. Miles became a circus ringmaster on the way to his dream of Hollywood stardom, and got entangled in the late-80s web of evangelical Christian corruption. That part of his book, and the surrounding stories, are (relatively) believeable. What isn't is the connections to the Kennedy assasination, Marilyn Monroe's death/murder/suicide, and the Jim Jones religious cult mass suicide in Guyana in 1977. Otherwise, those with an appetite for this kind of stuff will, as Austin Miles himself puts it late in this book (quote approximate), "[you] will read this book, cover to cover, because it [has] lots and lots of juicy gossip and that will certainly appeal to the likes of you!"

Whether it will appeal to the likes of anyone unfamiliar with the PTL scandal--now more than a decade removed--is difficult to say at best.

3 out of 5 stars The blame game?.......2003-03-23

First published at the height of the televangelism scandals of the late 1980's, "Don't Call Me Brother" recounts the story of a boy who ran away to join the circus, became a well-known ringmaster, found Jesus after a miraculous healing of an audience member that occurred after Miles asked for silent prayer for the man, and later became a fixture on the PTL Club. Much of the material here will not be shocking to anyone who followed PTL scandal (and who didn't?), but the slander, hatred, and hypocrisy shown by rank-and-file ministers of the Gospel was quite surprising, at least to me. Also surprising is the contention by Miles that homosexuality and adultery run rampant in the Assemblies of God denomination. I can't help but think he's overstating this just a little. But, there's more to the story than what is emphasized.

Miles is somewhat mysterious early in the book about his first marriage. It almost seems like his daughter just arrives on the scene with scant explanation. As the story unfolds, it seems that his first wife was responsible for getting him caught up in a conspiracy concerning the Kennedy presidency and Marilyn Monroe. Thus, Miles has to go through a name change from Al Maddox, his previous stage name, to Austin Miles. Toward the end of the book, we learn that the FBI has been harrassing acquaintances of Miles, paying them off (or not paying them off, in the case of the good church folks) to come up with dirt on him to destroy his reputation. Therefore, the FBI seems to be as much or more to blame than the church. The hostility he received from the church could have simply come from fear of the FBI. But then, this is a book attacking the church, not the FBI. Miles will probably never write that book.

His second marriage to the love of his life, a Swiss heiress, is threatened by his religious conversion and subsequent departure from his life as a ringmaster to constantly be on the road to speak at churches and religious functions. Once again, it seems the church is to blame for destroying his family. However, if he'd have handled things with a little more wisdom, he could have had Jesus and his family, too. Could it be that he was at least a little bit to blame for the situation?

Interestingly, he still cannot bring himself to explain away the healings and miracles that were part of his ministry. If what a previous reviewer said is true, that Austin Miles has returned to the ministry, then it's probably the undeniable power of God that he experienced firsthand that kept him connected. Hopefully, there are some needed reconciliations that have taken place since this book was written. With all that said, this is a book that is hard to put down once you've started, and is a worthwhile read if the reader keeps things in perspective.

The author is not a particularly loveable guy. After all he was one among the traveling preachers whom he exposes here. However you probably will feel for him as his life and family fall apart. His stories of the evangelists who travel from church to church rang true to me. My childhood church was involved with the things Miles talks about and he even mentions my former church's pastor by name. (See Angels on Assignment.) I have a childhood memory of a one eyed traveling preacher coming to preach at our church. After having someone blindfold his good eye he proceeded to `read' people's names off their driver's licenses. Once the congregation was all worked up by this `miracle' they passed the collection plate. (If you're wondering how he may have managed this trick of reading with an empty eye socket read James Randi's book The Faith Healers.) Read this book for an eye opening peek behind the scenes of Pentecostalism, televangelism, and the Assembly of God church. If you or someone you care about is involved with this movement I especially urge you to read this book. The connection to Jim Jones (remember poison kool-aid?) was a shock to me.

Many books have been now published on this relatively new subject: women in Judaism, women groping to find their place within Judaism, and how Judaism has influenced the lives of women. This book offers an honest and private look into thirty women's experiences with Judaism. I especially appreciated the diversity of the women chosen, and therefore the diversity of the themes explored. Many essays offered surprising moments of identification with the feelings described by women whose destiny is so different from mine; this is perhaps an indicator of this enterprise's success.
