After running away from home, Douglas McHardie found himself in Arizona, where things took a horrible turn for the worse as he found himself wanted for murder, thus beginning his life on the run as an outlaw. From Arizona he escaped to the Canadian gold mines of the Yukon where he found gold. With his newfound riches he moved to San Francisco and opened a saloon, only to have it destroyed by the great earthquake of 1906. McHardie's sense of adventure, however, was not destroyed, and his journey continued to Australia, Bombay, and Afghanistan, where he ran guns between the Gulf States and Kabul and was later tortured. The buyer should know that a large majority of the patterns have blouses in the leg of mutton style. Since this was not what I was looking for I had to send it back. However the patterns did seem to be historically accurate.

Full of vintage photographs and detailed instructions, this book gives step by step procedures for many tailoring techniques which we rarely see on anything but designer wear. These techniques can be applied by any seamstress to produce a more fitted and tailored look to their fashions. Definately worth owning for any costumer or fashion designer looking for a more romantic and tailored look in their fashions.

1890s Sewing Patterns.......2001-02-17

This book contains sewing patterns drawn from the same issues of the magazine _The Voice of Fashion_ as Dover's earlier collection _59 Authentic Turn-of-the-Century Fashion Patterns_. Both books contain patterns for the 1890s. This book focuses more on women's patterns; the other book contains many children's. I collect original issues of _The Voice of Fashion_. This magazine was published from 1886 to 1909. Every issue mirrors the season's changing styles. I am glad to see an anthology that makes the 1890s patterns more widely available. One note for seamstresses enlarging the patterns--the measurements on them are not inches, or metric. They are for a patent drafting system that is not included with either book.

A must have book for anyone interested in Late Victorian clothing. The introductions gives a basic review of drafting methods, with careful reading and patience (lots of it!) the patterns are easily drafted to modern measurements. You can't beat the price for the number of patterns you get.

Good techniques for a lost art. Anyone who enjoys sewing authentic Victorian clothes, not just Victorian-styled clothes should buy this book.

Comprehensive book on making all types of mosaics.......2006-05-11

The pattern companion is a modest title for a book that is much more. Yes, it does include patterns for every project, along with photos of the steps involved. Those sections are after the very complete general directions on mosaic. There's something for all skill levels. It is very thorough.

I was impressed with the chapters on supplies and tools. Lots of photos and a good discussion of the pros & cons of each material and their uses. The plan layout instructions show how to create or copy a design and how to transfer your design to an item, even a 3-D object.

The small pieces used in mosaic are called tesserae and can be many types of materials. The illustrated cutting techniques explore irregular shapes, common shapes and leaves. The section on making your own gold leaf glass was very interesting. I also liked their discussion of grouts and adhesives. One great ideas was to use an adhesive other than grout - just sprinkle beads or glitter between the tessearae. The general instructions finish with a helpful trouble-shooting section.

The projects are divided by technique and increase in complexity through the book. In the direct method, the mosaic is applied to the object. Probably the easiest way to begin. Learning the next technique, the indirect method, expands the items that you can cover with mosaic. Profuse photos illustrate how to make your mosaic design on another material and transfer it to the final object.

Another chapter discusses the very popular method of picasiatte, the technical name for using broken china or found objects as your mosaic pieces. Broken china is how many of us rediscovered mosaics, and it's a lot of fun. One of my favorite chapters is on garden projects. They cover specific techniques for outdoor mosaics. Great projects.

The final and most complex chapter covers armatures & constructed bases. One example of this technique is a gorgeous reflecting bird bath with mosaic perches extending over the water.

The projects range from simple to complex. They include a clock, mirrors, frames, a lovely flamingo design, a stained glass lampshade, picture under glass mosaic, dog portrait, cake stand, house number, mosaic accent brick, looking glass garden stake, strawberry planter with attached teacups and creamers, and a lot more.

If you are interested in learning mosaics or want to take your mosaic projects to the next level, this book is great.

Great music, accurate transcription.
I just keep on playing the cd, and reading and working at the book.
If you are interested in improving your playing, this is a must!

1 year later I'm still enjoying this book and cd!
Slowly progressing through Missile Blues and Sundown.
I can play the heads for both songs, now moving into the solos.
Trying to speed up my reading of notes.
Still using both tabs and notes, as I reckon tab is still essential because the guitar sounds so different depending on the frets used.

Great tool for improvement.......2006-06-17

First of all, Wolf Marshall is an awesome guitarist. To be able to mimic the syles of so many legendary guitar heroes is nothing short of unbelievable. This book gave me insight into Wes songs I already knew and helped me correct some of the mistakes I was making, after learning them by ear. Mi Cosa, for example, uses the original Riverside version, I learned the Verve version, which was done with strings. I suggest, whenever possible, listen to actual Wes recordings. Wolf is good, but he definitely ain't Wes. There is a difference in the exact nuances, phrasing and touch that Wes gets. I've been playing for 30+ years and am impressed with the knowledge I've been able to gain from Wolf's books. The transcriptions are first-rate and accurate. I also recommend his George Benson and Pat Martino books. This is more than worth the money, it's a real bargain. Buy and enjoy.

Good transcription.......2005-08-29

This is a really well done transcription of these Wes Mongomery tunes. The tablature is very accurate and easy to work with. The accompanying CD is also good help for working on these solos.

Best of Wes.......2004-08-13

Wolf tears it up in this one. I now have three of his books: 101 jazz licks, Wes Montgomery, and Charlie Christian. This one is by far my favorite of the three.

All of Wolf's books are dead accurate. I have played his cds and origional recordings side by side and the match is identical. He and his band have got every note, every cymbol crash, every lick, everything down identically. The tabs are also right on. Wolf is the only one I've found who gets tabbing correct.

Buy ALL of his books. Not only is he an amazing guitarist, he is also a totally humble man. He even gave me some pointers that have helped me considerably when I first met him at a John Pissano/Henry Johnson gig at Spazios in Sherman Oaks.

Desert Island Jazz Book?.......2007-01-27

Here's what you get in this book: Six substantial solos, recorded and written out (tab and music notation...), each with specific and easy to understand discussion, phrase by phrase, of how the notes were chosen. The solos and chord progressions are great...right in the bop/post bop zone, and, the phrase by phrase disection provides an immediately applicable resource. The analysis of the solos gets you playing those elusive jazz sounds right away, and lots of sensible narrative means you will understand the theory. For me, this is the one book I wish I had thirty years ago. Great value.

Very nice jazz method.......2006-07-19

I bought this book last week, influenced by a friend who owns it.

Actually the book is very self explained, with step-by-step tips of the tecnique involved in the licks of each song, wich has its own versions without the guitars, in order to improve the skills obtained by the student throughout practicing.

If you're new to Jazz, this can help........2005-10-18

Years ago I had bought this course when it was all on cassette and cost $75 a pop. I had bought the blues course and liked it, then got this thinking that it might help. Unfortunately I didn't appreciate jazz as much back then and decide to exchange it for a more "practical" country hot licks, as that was what I was playing more of back then and mistakenly didn't see a need to persue a study of jazz, which seemed complicated to me then.
Now years later I have developed more of an interest in jazz and have tried a few differnt book/cd courses, without a great deal of results. I remembered that course and how the other prolick courses had helped me, so I decided to look for the jazz course on the internet only to find that it didn't exist in that format, but rather in a more affordable book and cd.
I had remembered the old courses were a great deal of talk and explaination, and a little booklet with notes and tabs. Now the cd contains the solos played through once, then just the rhythm track so you can practice along with it, with a lot of explaination written in the book. It has tab and notation(what guitar player reads notes when they have tabs?) It seems to have a lot of info on different techniques used in jazz. I've not gotten all the way through it yet, but I'm enjoying what I've done so far.
If you're a guitar player that's played other types of music over the years and are looking to get into jazz, or just looking to grab a few licks and concepts that will enhance your own style of playing, I think you'll like this one.

I liked the bio of Wes Montgomery by Adrian Ingram. I have been listening to Wes since the age of 13, (1965), and he is definitely one of the reasons I've played guitar for the past 40+ years. Ingram's take on Wes fills in many spaces about his life and career. The format of the book is kind of mix and match... but it still delivers on quantity of info. The pictures are few and the quality sometimes lacking, but for sheer bang for your buck this book is a Wes lovefest! I already knew a lot about the music of Montgomery, Ingram shares info about his origins that you don't find in most sources. The discography, instrument/amp info, insider stuff on the recording sessions all give this book a unique view of Wes. I recommend this to anyone who wants tolearn more about the man and his music. I don't think the definitive book about him has been written yet. How about a bio-pic ala Ray?

Hard Work.......2004-09-22

Ingram made a very hard work to bring all Wes' fans a in-deep sight of wes' life and career. Here you can find the entire discography (very precise) of a great jazz guitarist.
This book gave me the opportunity to buy only the right cds, leaving out all commercial collections. Not many photos, but good ones.

This Giant deserves more!.......2000-06-23

Okay, mr. Ingram loves Wes and his music, that much is clear. And it is good to know how this guitar giant lived his (much to) short live. I like the kind way Ingram describes the period of Wes's life when he sold his soul to commerce. At least that is the way the 'real' jazz connoisseurs think of it. Ingram's story puts this perod in a different perspective. What I don't like is the flimsy looks of this book: poor type, poor print and very poor illustrations. Pitty, this could have been a good book.

A super book.......2007-04-23

I am a beginning guitarist with a passion for jazz, and as such I cannot give a very educated critique of this book, but as an enthusiastic learner I can say it is just what I am looking for. The first half explains some techniques used by wes to achieve his sound: guide tones, bebop scales, note targeting, 3rd to flat 9 notes, arpeggios and extended arpeggios etc with some background theory. The second half is a collection of lines in the style of wes, grouped into lines to be played over major minor or dominant chords, leading to phrases over major and minor ii V I progressions. Exactly the right mix of theory and practice I think. A great inspiration is an example solo which basically cuts and pastes some of the example lines and phrases over a progression and it sounds very melodic indeed. The official blurb says this book is for beginners to intermediate players which is probably right but it is not suitable for complete novices because knowledge of basics such as chord structure, scale structure and diatonic harmonies are assumed. I imagine this will keep me busy for months, and at this moment in time I can honestly say it is the best guitar book I have bought.

All us west coast audiophiles were listening to Jazz in stereo on LP 33 1/3's.
We had these tube amps and diamond needles.
You go on the net and look for free Wes Montgomery mp3s...
naw. He's dead and they still want your money for it.
This music ain't cheap, but learning how he did it
may well be worth it. It was new when I was young.
