If you are a fan of Galen's work you will certainly enjoy this book. The concept, comparing and contrasting the two poles, is brilliant.
The photographs are typical Galen - beautiful, engaging, illuminating. The accompanying text provides context and insight.
There is an essay section at the back that provides some insight into how Galen thought about the photos that appear in this book. Very interesting reading and a great teaching aid for amateur photographers and photojournalists.
A MUST-HAVE picture volume.......2003-09-26
Wow, what a great and such awesome picture volume. This book not only shows you pictures from the Arctic and the Antarctic, it particularly reveals the true differences between the two polar regions...they ARE truly different and fascinating! This book also delivers very-high quality photography, which can easily tempt you into travelling to such exotic destinations.
In the book, you will find 2 pictures side by side-one showing the Arctic, the other showing Antarctic. That way, you will get an idea of its differences. In addition, there is a separate chapter that dedicates to interesting stories regarding these regions, anything from life in Siberia, Inuit life in northern Alaska, to the South Georgia Islands & the South Pole. Last, but not least, there is also a whole section reviewing all the pictures showed in the book, including background information describing each photo, etc.
This is truly an amazing picture volume that is a MUST-HAVE for any polar fanatic. Get prepared for over 180 pages of some superb photography and much info on these fantastic regions. For the money, it was quite worth it...
GREENLAND REVISTED THROUGH A LITTLE DANE'S EYES........1998-12-26
Turning to page 74, my Danish-born wife, Aino, was amazed to discover her little town of Scoresbysund. She spent her fomative years(age 5-12)growing up there, where her father, Dr. Werner Mortensen, served as the sole doctor for the area of 3 villages.
Galen Rowell's photography captures the typical beauty of a Scandinavian mileau, even though it is truly a facade for the garbage that the typical native Greenlander casts no further than his front door!
His words portray the many problems of the native Inuits, who have been unable to adapt to the influence of Danish culture and progress. For Rowell to elaborate on the problems of alcholism, violent crime, and the high rate of suicide in a village of only 500, distinguishes him as an author that researchs his subjects quite well! It brought back memories for my wife of the "Grundlander" that beat his wife with the carcass of a frozen seal, only to have his wife bite of his ear.
The large yellow building in the left foreground is the eight bed hospital; the little red house with white trimmed windows that is over to the immediate left is where family Mortensen grew up from 1966-72. This book really takes my wife back,and helps me see things that were only in her mind's eye. It also brings her up to the what the present day Scoresbysund has become. And now that my family will be moving to Fairbanks,Alaska, my wife can get a sneak preview of our future from this marvelous book. Having lived in Alaska myself, I definitely recommend this book for its shear splendid photography and candid commentary. Great job Galen!

This is much more than a coffee table book, though its unique photographs of the pristine beauty of the Arctic and Antarctic would impress even the most casual of browsers. A short story about each photo is included, along with more general, thoughtful and poignant commentary from someone that is truly in touch with the global environment. Rowell is one of the great nature photographers, and this is a stunning collection

A Duck Call History Like You Have Never Seen Before!.......2006-11-06
When I purchsed this book, I had in mind to use it as a coffee table book, but when I recieved it I had not been able to let it down long enough to let it gather that coffee table dust....It is the most revealing history of duck calls collected over the years of a highly acclaimed call maker, Joe Jaroski, whom I have had the priveledge to meet with during a Callers Show in Tennessee this year. Not to mention calls made from some of the country's best makers...to the calls made by these same people as novices...evaluating a call for its monetary worth is tricky, but this book will help you learn when it comes to purchasing calls, and what to look for when collecting calls. It is a great book to have and to share with friend.

I've had this book for years and have used the principles in it to make many sweatshirts into comfortable cardigans. They are wonderful for slipping on and off easily when you have arthritis and aren't as heavy as a regular jacket. By coordinating fabric you can make a cardigan that matches your pants and skirts. Using the ideas in this book there are many ways to adapt and make nice looking cover-ups for disabled people who have special dressing needs such as larger neckholes, etc.

This book was very helpful. It's a great reference to have at home. It has everything from colds, flu and sinusitis to arthritis, etc. If you are looking for a specific topic to go in depth, you will need a supplemental book. I found it to be even more helpful when I read it the 2nd time around.

In writing the web content for www.WomensMedicineBowl.com I read most of the books on the market that provide an overview of holistic medicine. Dr. Ivker covers all dimensions of healing, and he also knows the pharmaceuticals that are prescribed for various ailments and advises on their effectiveness and side-effects. For our family's health questions, this is the book I continually return to. If I had to live with only three books on healthy living, this would be one of them--and the other two are specialized areas!

What a fantastic resource! At last, a comprehensive guide to truly holistic health. Not just dealing with the physical, but the emotional, spiritual, and environmental aspects of each health issue. Dr Anderson has spent many years of his career researching the literature to find clinically proven holistic ways of treatment; these are not just antidotal remedies as found in most other books (Docs, check out his Clinician's Guide to Holistic Medicine, from the Hazelden Chronic Illness Series, or one of his compilations of abstracts to support holistic medicine.) Dr Ivker has pulled from some of his other holistic health books to really add more to this one. (Sinus Survival, Asthma Survival, and Arthritis Survival)
Even if you were to never use the information in the main body of this book, read it for the "self interview" at the beginning to help determine how healthy you are. Do you define health to be a state of "lack of disease" or one of whole person wellness? This book will help you in your discovery of true holistic (whole person) health.

For 40 years, the
diaries of Ned Rorem have been ideal bedtime reading for musicians. This first installment of the new century, covering 1986 to 1999, parades a few of Rorem's familiar themes: insomnia, self-contradictions, letters to the editor (some never sent, some never published), and, of course, notes on his own music (including an especially lovely commentary on the English Horn Concerto). There are some unexpected anecdotes as well, including one about dinner with Nancy Reagan, an appreciation of Frank O'Hara, and the chronicle of a long-running dispute with neighbor Itzhak Perlman's air conditioner (the air conditioner wins). Rorem appraises new music, slamming Boulez, Schnittke, and Bruce Springsteen (who share good company with Beethoven and Mother Teresa), but there is a sudden about-face on Rorem's former bête noire, Elliott Carter. This time, however, the tone is darker than before because death is all around. Rorem's parents, in separate wings of a nursing home, die within months of each other. And above all, the diary covers the long decline and death of partner Jim Holmes, who suffers from Crohn's disease, cancer, and HIV (he withholds his discovery that he's been carrying the virus from Rorem for several months).
The final third of the diary, when Holmes's pills alone are described as costing $15,000 a year, is achingly sad, but somehow, Rorem avers, "the purpose of a diary is to evade real life." He thinks that "nobody sings my songs anymore," so it is to be hoped that he was heartened by Susan Graham's sensational Rorem anthology released in 2000, as well as his 2001 Grammy nomination for "best contemporary classical composition" for the song cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen. Planet Earth's greatest diarist.......2004-07-01
I bitterly begrudge Ned for being one of those self-congratulatory artsy-fartsy types who are constantly blathering about Art with a capital "A". I hate that mentality. But that doesn't prevent me from being a Nedhead. My other complaint about Ned's prose is his refusal to provide English translations for the French quotes. For the benefit of us non-francophones.
Ned's self-righteous proselytory pacifism is another thing that drives me up the goddam wall. It's a big fat boring blindspot and he excretes smugness whenever the subject of war comes up. Pacifism is a form of simplistic absolutism. And it's just as wrong-headed as any other form of absolutism. Including aesthetic absolutism. Which Ned has himself addressed: "Until an Absolute is established as to what defines 'good music', I will retain my right to call trash certain works of Beethoven: the Emperor, the Appassionata, the end of the Ninth."
Let me commend Ned's heroic stoicism in regard to the illness & death of Jim Holmes. I was depressed to find out that Jim was every bit the atheist that Ned is. As usual, I blame God.

Ned Rorem is our best diarist. Is there another one at present? I find myself dipping into this latest diary all the time. I love the gossip as much as the next fella, but it's the mini essays on any number of topics that I truly love. Elucidates the sad state of the composer and the song right now.

This was my first exposure to the writing of Ned Rorem and perhaps because of this, I found "Lies" to be thoroughly readable. Yes, there are moments when he does come across as a sort of whining name-dropper; but there are also times when he sheds light on dying, relationships, music, composing and the like that make it a worthwhile read.
sad drivel from a tired man.......2001-03-06
This latest book by Rorem is a desperate attempt to continue reporting on his witty and sometimes scandalous life. However, the wit is trying and desiccated. Further, what Rorem now hopes we will find scandalous has more to do with his disdain of the words "pundit" or "grunge" than anything truly controversial. One can't blame Rorem; his lover's illness and decline was probably devastating. He might have done better to wait until he had some time to heal. LIES is more a study of a fraying and distracted man than a heartfelt account of fame and death.

My favorite book.......2006-05-12
This book is difficult for me to describe, I guess I can only say that along with 'Man's Search for Meaning' by Viktor E. Frankl, 'Souls on Fire' by Elie Wiesel is among the two books that have changed my life.In these powerful and beautiful stories of Jewish Hasidic masters Elie Wiesel teaches us to fight depression by deliberately cultivating joy,that we must enjoy life in spite of life,that death is never the answer,and that that life is sacred,so much so that in spite of anything we have suffered we must say yes to this life.
In sum this book (and Frankl's) should be read by all who struggle with sadness.It is a very poetic and life-affirming book by a survivor who has seen ultimate evil in man and yet still affirms the holiness of our lives.
Disappointed.......2001-11-26
I was disappointed with this work. It is more about Elie Weisel then about chassidic stories. Many of the stories are familiar to me, and in all cases they appear distorted and many times the point of the story is missing. To summarize, as one of the stories said, He didn't hear what was said, and didn't write what he heard.
More than just nostalgia..........2001-01-19
It's amazing how everything Wiesel touches turns to gold, and here, he's done it again.
The Chassidic masters Wiesel portrays were passionate about Judaism in a way any modern reader can relate to. Wiesel deftly brings that message home time and time again, evoking not only the syrupy nostalgia of most volumes of "Rebbe stories", but also a very immediate committment to Jewish life.
A masterpiece, this would also make an excellent gift for anyone interested in Jewish spirituality.
A journey through Hassidism.......1999-11-03
Hassidism, its tales, legends, and masters, has always been a source of mystery and confusion. "Souls on Fire" is a journey through Hassidism. Traveling from the source and further development of this unique Jewish religious manifestation is a joy when led by the mind and sould of Elie Wiesel. His personal and emotional input, the tales and legends included throughout the book, and his non-academic but rather humane approach (a typical Hassid) is the most sincere attempt in trying to understand and "speak of the unspeakable," sparkling light into a religious fervor born out of anguish and despair. The purpose is not to agree or understand, but rather to believe.

A book certain to bring tears of sorrow, joy, and hope.......2004-01-08
In Rebbetzin Jungreis' first and finest book, she presents autobiographic vignettes which serve as background to her ultimate message, that disenfranchised Jews return to their heritage to realize more meaningful lives. This book is incredibly moving and is certain to bring anyone concerned about the paucity of Torah (Hebrew Bible) based spirituality, practice, and knowledge in World Jewry to tears. From her childhood in Hungry and her hellish years in Bergen-Belsen to her becoming one of the World's preeminent leaders helping Jews return to and learn about Traditional Judaism, Rebbetzin Jungreis shares stories which address societal issues and norms that are preventing Jews from having meaningful lives. The book covers many areas, from showing what it means to be an adult, how to find happiness & overcome loneliness, to how to raise children all within a Traditional Jewish framework. Through her insightful vignettes and well-quoted passages from the Torah and Talmud, Rebbetzin Jungreis demonstrates that Torah observance is antidote to the malady that is affecting World Jewry.
Inspirational wisdom.......2002-05-24
It's been quite awhile since I have read the Rebbetzin's book but I remember being overawed by the spiritual depth and insight she provides. In The Jewish Soul on Fire, Rebbetzin Jungreis calls on all Jews to reassess their lives and implores them to return to the sanctification and fulfillment of traditional Judaism. It also chronicles her struggle to create the outreach organization, Hineni ("Here I am"), which has been the everyday realization of her message. Rebbetzin Jungreis has spent a lifetime combatting the spiritual holocaust among modern Jews which seemed to follow too closely the heels of the Nazi nightmare. People who have read her more recent work, The Committed Life, will recognize Soul on Fire as its nucleus. Her extraordinary knowledge, experience, and passion culminate to produce a work of inspiring and profound wisdom.

"IN HELL ONE PRAYS BETTER THAN IN PARADISE".......2001-01-11
Elie Wiesel describes himself as neither philosopher nor historian but "merely" as a "storyteller who transmits what was given to him, as faithfully as possible, yet lending it his own voice and intonation." He does exactly that in SOULS ON FIRE: HASIDIC PORTRAITS AND LEGENDS.
Before reading this book, I only knew what little of Hasidism one can absorb from watching the Habad Lubavitch funding appeals on Public Television and from casual reading of such novels as Potok's THE CHOSEN.I did know that dancing played a part in Hasidic prayer, but hadn't a clue as to why. SOULS ON FIRE didn't make an instant Hasidic expert out of me, but it did give me a feeling for the history and traditions of a movement that, in the years of the holocaust, played a major, if indirect, part in the preservation of Eastern European Jewry and its culture. (It made reference to the dancing, too.)
The modern Hasidic movement seems to have started with the Baal Shem Tov (1700 - 1760). (Baal Shem Tov translates as Master of the Name.) Passed from the Baal Shhem Tov through succeeding generations of disciples, some of whom also became Masters, or Rebbes, in their own generations, the movement survived, and even thrived in a much less than friendly environment. Eventually it had spread to three geographical areas; the Ukraine, White Russia, and Poland. In each area there were individual Rebbes who taught their own brand of Hasidism and who had their own fervent followers.
Since Wiesel's approach to his subject is to let the various tales and parables of the Rebbes speak for themselves, it's my intention, in this review, to do the same but on a very limited scale. A few comments follow:
Baal Shem Tov: "Whoever loves God exclusively . . . . excluding man, reduces his love and his God to an abstraction."
Wiesel's Grandfather, a Hasid, but not a Rebbe: "To induce others to believe is easier than to believe."
Menachim-Mendl of Kotsk: "In Hell one prays better than in Paradise."
Rebbe Bunham of the School of Pshiskhe: "I think that I could reform any sinner - except a liar . . . . and the worst liar is one who lies to himself."
One complete tale which evidently is meant for God's ears and which reflects on man's seemingly futile wait for the Messiah:
This is also from Rebbe Bunham: A king, wanting to punish his son, sends him into exile in a distant land. The prince, suffering from hunger and cold, waits to be recalled. As years go by, he loses the very strength needed to wait for the royal pardon. Finally, many years later, the king sends an emissary with full powers to grant the prince every desire and wish. In response, the prince asks for a piece of bread and a warm coat, nothing else. He has forgotten that he is a prince and that he could return to his father's kingdom.
Some of the more pessimistic Rebbes seemed to feel that God had to be reminded of his responsibilities to man, and so reminded him through their tales and parables.
Wiesel tells us that Hasidism was born in and survived eras of fear, hunger, and persecution. He hints, through references to his own incarceration, along with most Eastern European Jews, in the Nazi Concentration Camps, that Hasidism, bred in times of anguish, had the strength to survive the hardest test of all, the murder of most of its adherents.
Very little in SOULS ON FIRE can be read in a literal sense. To get the full impact of the book it is necessary to suspend reliance on reality in favor of imagination and perhaps a touch of compassion.

In this fascinating book, Ellie Weisel gives a personalized history of Hasidism. Using his own memories and insights, plus whatever tales and legends he finds most interesting, he takes us through Hasidism from its beginning through a lot of the Hasidic masters. The subject is interesting by itself, especially since many of the legends are profound or funny, and Mr. Weisel's wonderful writing style is the perfect vehicle for it. Buy and read this book!
