Book Description
One hundred and fifty years ago a young Maltese from the city of Senglea, Andrea De Bono, went to live in darkest Africa. He spent almost twenty years of his life in those harsh equatorial regions, traveling and exploring, bartering for ivory with friendly natives and fighting hostile tribesmen. De Bono had a private army, a river flotilla and a string of trading posts. Strong and brave, acclimatized and experienced, he had ample time to become the first European to discover the sources of the White Nile, which had been an enigma in Europe for more than two thousand years. However, Andrea De Bono allowed this golden opportunity to cover himself and his small island home with glory to slip right through his fingers; at one time he was just a few miles away from one of the great sources of the mighty African river. This is the story of an ordinary man who pushed himself to the limit. Facing family losses, political intrigues and petty jealousies, he was falsely accused of slave trafficking. And here he showed true grit. This and his readiness to help his fellow explorers, Speke and Grant, reveal a nobler nature than the terms 'trader' and 'frontiersman' imply. Excellently researched, well illustrated and colourfully told, this insightful biography throws light on an unusual corner of history and human endeavour.

OBVIOUS TALENT.......2003-07-15
Patricia Wallace is definitely an author on the arising. Each of her many penning novels is a frightening experience one will sink his/her teeth into. SEE NO EVIL, for instance, starts out with a bang and keeps the reader glued to the pages. Wallace's prose is simple, on-the-target, with numerous chapters so the reader can stop at any time, but won't, for SEE NO EVIL is addictive and will probably be read in one sitting. The story centers around two blind children who regain their sight (after having had a corneal transplantation) with devastating results, especially to those around them. The author succeeds not only in creating an intriguing plot but also in weaving it ever-so effectively one can only be impressed by this skillful touch. Sure, her characterization is paper-thin, and her story has some noticeable loopholes, but if one is prepared to overlook these flaws, SEE NO EVIL will be pure joy to whomever picks it up.-----Martin Boucher
Another haunting tale from the pen of Patricia Wallace........2000-04-17
SEE NO EVIL is so much more than a "horror novel". It's an exciting medical thriller, as only Patricia Wallace can tell it, peopled with fully realized characters.
Be sure to look for Ms. Wallace's other fine novels, which include "Thrill" and the four books in the Sydney Bryant series.

Book Description
Antique Trunks, Refinish, Repair, Restore is the definitive how-to book on refinishing any type of antique trunk. It includes over 140 well illustrated pages of tips and techniques put together by the master craftsmen of The Trunk Shop. It includes sections on removing exterior and interior linings, wood and metal repair, safety, finishing, and painting.
Customer Reviews:
Required Reading for Trunk Restoration & Repair.......2007-09-09
The book provides a wonderful step-by-step approach to trunk restoration and repair for a broad variety of trunks with which you might be dealing, from leather covered to brass mound to metal trunks with embossed tin and those covered in canvas. The guide is conveniently spiral-bound so that you can keep a specific page open when working on the trunk. Finally, I really liked the humorous approach. It's a nice complement to Morse & Edelstein's "Antique Trunks" book.
Excellent resource book.......2007-07-17
I purchased this book for my husband and he really likes it. We've had an antique trunk in the rafters of our garage for years...not knowing how to restore it. If every antique trunk ever made isn't in the book, I'd be surprised. Not only does it give historical information but exactly how to restore it and a place to order replacement parts. The trunk is out of the rafters and being worked on now. I'd recommend it to anyone...especially to beginners like us.
Not much bang for your buck........2007-07-16
I was surprised first off that's it's not an actual book but spiral bounded. The information was very hard to understand. The information contradicts information I found on a site that suggests this book, so I was dissapointed in that. I hate that I just spent $25 on something I won't ever use.
worked great for me.......2006-12-29
I just want to say that the previous reviewer, I think, was distracted by the folksy style of the author, so much so that he didn't see the nitty gritty. I actually restored a trunk--my first--off Morse's step by step in this book. He offers great help such as tool lists (I purchased the hand tools he recommended) and tips on chipping old paper linings out of the trunk (an impossible task without his wisdom) and also clear instructions on how to shore up wood cracks--two kinds, cosmetic and structural. I was able to restore a Civil War era trunk with a broken back to a nice cosmetic state so that it looks nice in my house. And I made it structurally sound enough to use as my toddler's toy box.
does not live up to promise.......2005-02-19
A cute book, but contains very little information for all of its promise. The authors are busy making jokes but not talking about the nitty gritty of restoration. Maybe it is to hard to do since every job presents its own challanges. I just found the content thin. I am sorry I purchased it. If I could have found a copy in my local library, I would have saved some money.

Book Description
Here for the first time is an in-depth presentation of the ideas and design of Benno Janssen, whose elegant architecture greatly enriched the landscape of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Lavishly illustrated with color photographs by Edward Massery, this book is a handsome and insightful tribute to one of Pittsburgh most highly regarded architects.
Customer Reviews:
A Great American Architect.......2000-12-10
Anyone who has experienced a Benno Janssen designed property understands the beauty, majesty and uniqueness of his style. His use of the natural resources of Western Pennsylvania and a style of combining high roofs and archways create an Eastern European look. He is truely one of our country's greatest architects. I recommend this book for anyone who appreciates great architecture, especially when it utilizes the surrounding landscape.

Book Description
This guide offers parents the information they need to recognize the causes of ADD/ADHD in children and develop effective techniques for battling the difficulties associated with it. It also provides strategies for reducing the symptoms of hyperactivity which aggravate ADD/ADHD.
Book Description
Hailed as one of the most in-depth portraits ever presented of a band, Get Back traces-in an incredible minute-by-minute re-creation-every move that the Beatles made during the making of their ill-fated Let It Be album and film in January 1969. The friction that formed within the band during these recording sessions is chronicled here in closely observed detail, and the result is an extraordinarily intimate look at the Beatles and their music during their most difficult period. For years people have asked why the Beatles broke up; here, finally, is the answer.
Customer Reviews:
The groundwork for the "divorce" .......2007-05-06
This was a big part in why they broke up, but it was a couple of events, Paul going behind the band's back, not signing to have Allen Klein represent them, then suing them that really caused a rift.
You hear Paul trying to keep things together as he had been since Brian died, but it just comes across that they're in a place that isn't giving them much inspiration, and John and George are barely there. George Martin is nowhere to be seen, someone who had been their sounding board and pushed their creative buttons.
The friction with Paul against George and John is heard on the bootleg tapes. None of which made it on to "Let It Be...Naked" but is pretty important stuff. Hearing John yelling at Paul "it's you who's doing it" and George cursing and unplugging his guitar is classic. Paul was known to grab George's instrument and talk down to him, and had gotten on Ringo's kit.
Regardless of what happened at these sessions, it wasn't really over, but it was set in motion. In the coming months they would work on "Abbey Road" and finish up some of the "Let It Be" mixes. The promo for "Something" and the final photo shoots (Abbey Road and Hey Jude album covers) showed 4 very different people ready to move on.
Even when they broke up, they were all known to defend each other against the press and even close friends and associates even if they bad mouthed each other up to when Lennon died.
I do agree that the book is better read when you're listening to the tapes.
Across the Universe.......2005-07-06
This is an excellent book that is well researched. As an inveterate Beatles fan, I found it very interesting and was sorry to see a good thing come to an end. I loved the glimpse behind the Beatle curtain during rehearsals and the details of each scene of the 1969 movie, "Let it Be." The movie was released in 1970 and has since been regarded as the end of an era.
I was glad to see that there was no criticism of Yoko and I did not find her intrusive at all. In fact, her original observations added to the appeal of this work! Paul's family scenes with his wife Linda and daughter, Heather, then 6 lent a gentle touch to the movie. Paul clearly was in his element with them and seeing him so loving and natural made a good thing even better.
Over the years, Paul has been harshly criticized during this period. Instead of refusing to allow the other Beatles room under the spotlight, Paul asked John repeatedly to bring in contributions so they can collaborate. In watching the movie and reading this book, one is under the impression that John is reticent about working with Paul. Since the Beatles allowed this film to be made of them in their natural state, dispensing blame is not only harsh, but counterproductive. There is no way for anyone to know the motives and thoughts of the Beatles. Speculation is one thing, but it does seem strange to declare those speculations as Gospel truth.
In one well-known acrimonious exchange between George and Paul, George tells Paul that he'll "play [guitar] if Paul wants him to and he won't play if Paul does not want him to." Paul even said in the Beatles' "Anthology" that he was by nature a hard worker and he encouraged the other Beatles to work with him. At no time did I ever come away with the impression that Paul was doing anything other than to create music as a group.
The question of George's leaving is treated as a response to John. The tapes that cover this period are missing in action, so there is really no way to prove this point either. George has said over the years that it was friction with Paul that prompted his departure and this book does not address that fact at all.
Paul was and remains a Class Act. He is the ultimate entertainer, completely at home performing. That is all to the good. Paul has even said in more recent years that he was driven and is a workaholic. Indeed, his dedication and hard work have proved successful as did the combination of his talents along with those of his bandmates. Paul also has the ability to comport himself with dignity and aplomb which reflects well on him. Even so, there probably have been times when Paul, in less than stellar moments made decisions and behaved in ways that upset others. It is part of the human condition. People are too complex to be confined to an image or set of consistent behaviors.
Clearly, the underplayed Harrison-McCartney friction is addressed by George Harrison himself in reviewing this period. He said he would never, under any conditions be in the same band with Paul McCartney, but he had no qualms about working with John Lennon. Even in his autobiography, "I Me Mine," Harrison barely mentions his former bandmates.
Pointing fingers and saying one member is to blame and excusing another is neither accurate nor helpful. Each Beatle directly involved, in this case Harrison, Lennon and McCartney have to take owership for his own actions. Each one contributed in his own fashion to the strife and tension that was rippling through the group during this period.
Each Beatle aimed darts at one or another; John's infamous dig at Paul was "How Do You Sleep;" Paul countered John with "Too Many People;" Ringo's dig at Paul was "Back Off, Boogaloo" and George's were "Wah-Wah" and his minimal mention of Lennon and McCartney in his autobiography.
All in all, barring the subjective opinions, this is an excellent book that will provide rich detail about the Beatles' filming of "Let It Be" during January 2 - 31, 1969 and the wrapping up of the group. You will also want to read the Beatles' "Anthology" and listen to bootlegs of the "Let it Be" period. I've got a feeling, a feeling deep inside oh yeah that this is a book that will be treasured by many and the words of the Beatles continue to resound Across the Universe.
Good Old Rock and Roll.......2004-05-25
Doug Sulpy and Ray Schwieghardt captured The Beatles during their demise. There appears no doubt that the group no longer shared the passion they shared in the beginning. Through hours of tapes, Suply and Schwieghardt dissected and attempted to get every nook and cranny of the Beatles'conversations. The authors show how the Beatles attempted to resusitate a musical entity that could no longer breath despite numerous attempts.
Indeed, Get Back: The Unauthorized Chronicle of the Beatles' Let it Be Disaster, did not offer any information that has not already been documented in fragments from various authors and publications. And the one thing that Sulpy and Schwieghardt do not dirctely do is answer their question of who or what broke up the Beatles. It is obvious that Yoko Ono played a major role in the breakup (Sulpy and Schweighardt's observations show her overbearing control over John's creativity and attempt at the Beatles' as well, which will play out during the Imagine sessions)along with how John, Paul, George, and Ringo changed and matured as individuals during the time that the Get Back (later retitled the Let It Be sessions) sessions occurred.
The most insightful aspect of the book had been Sulpy and Schweighardt's method of chronologically showing how each track developed and evolved. What the book does is show an inkling on how the Beatles'quickly directed their musical endeavors toward being solo artists. As you read each synopsis of each song that each member was attempting to collaborate lyrically or musically, you also see several of the songs, which will eventually become solo works by each respective member down the road. One unfortunate thought comes to mind, "hey, that could have been a Beatle song." Nevertheless, it was written by a Beatle.
Despite that thought, the Beatles possessed a diverse musical heritage. This was displayed in various parts of the book describing sessions where two or all four members jammed to songs dating back to their youth, and to artists of their time --Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Bob Dylan, The Band, and various standards. They would later intertwine the melodies of those songs into the songs in which they were working on.
Get Back should not be considered a record of the Beatles' "swan song", but rather a representation of their love for various musical genres and collaboration as four individuals, which contributed to what the Beatles were and always will be: a part of Rock and Roll history and culture.
it's a big job, but someone had to do it.......2003-08-09
the authors did a wonderful job of recording the happenings of the tapes available to them at the time. however, even since 1994, many new tapes have surfaced and are easy to come by in bootleg circles. i found this out by following along with a 17-disc set and realizing that i had a complete version of "bye bye love" that the author's hadn't heard (at the time). so, the book needs a new edition, certainly.
however, as one other reviewer already stated, the author's need to take a break from reading beatles' minds. it's not so much that they take sides (though Yoko seems to get bashed just because the author's feel obligated to), it's more that they actually believe they know what's going through the beatles' minds. and then sometimes they contradict themselves so obviously that you wonder if the book was ever edited.
for instance, for some reason they decided to say that paul "enthusiastically" reherses everyone's songs, even george's. first of all, several pages earlier, the authors mentioned paul yawning while george explined the chords of "all things must pass." then, one page after they claim how much more enthusiastic paul was, they say how bored paul is with someone else's song and that he really wants to just play his piano numbers. a stupid mistake.
still, get this book and get some GB sessions bootlegs. you'll become a more intelligent beatles fan :)
Good, but flawed.......2003-04-08
I read this book and enjoyed it immensely, with a few reservations. As a Beatles fan, I did not find it boring at all, and in fact, I was saddened it had to end so soon. I really enjoyed reading what happened, how they rehearse, and the creation process, even if this is the worst example of the Beatles doing so. There are a few revelations, as well. Yoko does not seem quite as intrusive as I believed she was, and she is quite humorous sometimes with her off-the-wall comments.
From the look of it, it does seem like a few myths are debunked, though not the one the authors seem to think. John often complained he was not able to contribute new material because of Paul "hogging" the later records. For this session, at least, Paul appears to keep asking John to bring in new material to work on. Paul seems honestly wanting Lennon to contribute. It is Lennon himself who doesn't seem to want to. The other myth seems to be the common complaint of John that "Across the Universe" was not properly paid attention to. It DOES seem a little like Lennon himself was not that interested in working on the tune as well, so blaming the other Beatles seems a little harsh.
Having said that, I want to explain how there is HUGE flaw in this book committed by the authors. They inject into the book what the Beatles are "thinking" when they do things, something they cannot possibly know. They also give REASONS for actions for Beatles which is plainly just an opinion, but which they treat as a fact.
Case in point; They say that Paul backs up Lennon and agrees with Lennon on some things because he is scared if he does not, Lennon will leave the group. At one point, Paul does appear to not want to confront Lennon about Yoko because he perhaps fears John will just pick Yoko over the Beatles, but they use this blanket statement over all of Paul's actions toward John, something they cannot possibly know. I mean, every single thing Paul agrees with Lennon on should not be assumed to be because of this one angle. I mean, this goes way beyond the bounds of what they can know.
This book also assumes to show that George left the group because of John and not Paul and treat this as if it is indeed some sort of fact. But the truth is, the tapes that lead up to George leaving are missing, so it is impossible for them to simply assume this because of the actions of Lennon against Harrison, which are very evident, but which did not cause Harrison to immediately leave. They state that Paul is helpful, cheerful, etc., in the tapes, so he must not have really been the cause, ignoring the very real fact that Harrison himself said Paul was the reason he left. Just because Paul acted better than John in the tapes that people have does not mean he did not do something atrociously inappropriate in the missing tapes that preceeded George leaving. They say the myth is debunked, and I see no such thing. I've never heard McCartney ever say that it was John and not him that caused Harrison to leave, which is something he would seem to say since he is the always the culprit in the story.
Also, the authors seem to suggest Paul was much nicer than John in this respect, but that fails to explain if he was, why Harrison was brutal in referencing to Paul after the Beatles broke up, with quotes like he would join a band with Lennon anytime but would never join a band with McCartney. So since the tapes leading up to the quitting are missing, and Harrison himself said it was Paul, and his anger about Paul after the Beatles, I think it is safe to assume there was a big blow-up in the missing tapes between Paul and George. The authors try to excuse McCartney, making Lennon the villian. And it is true, Lennon is quite nasty in "Let It Be" to George, but that is no reason to say Paul is innocent. They both are not too nice. But Harrison's attitude is just as well to blame. Lennon could not have missed the dagger thrown at him in "I Me Mine," and we all know how Lennon reacts to such things, as we saw when Paul did the same thing to John in "Too Many People" a few years later.
But if you take out the authors' opinions and read it just as a document of sorts, it is incredibly interesting and I enjoyed every
Book Description
Son of the brilliant founder of a thriving Wall Street investment firm, Roy S. Neuberger was raised in elegant surroundings on Manhattan's Upper East Side, overlooking the splendor of Central Park. Blessed with the finest education and the opportunity to partake of New York's cultural bounty, Roy developed the kind of youthful sophistication that only the privileged can know.
Why, when I have everything, do I feel as if I have nothing? For Roy Neuberger life was an inexplicable nightmare. Terrified of the black forces that seemed to engulf him, he was on a rapidly whirling downward spiral. Is there a door that leads to truth? Is there a door that leads to happiness?
At 2:00 a.m., Monday, January 10, 1966, then a twenty-three-year-old graduate student at the University of Michigan, Roy awoke with a start. His marriage was disintegrating; his grades were plummeting. He couldn't breathe; he had lost control. What else was there besides death?
It was then that Roy began to think the unthinkable: Perhaps there is a reality beyond man's understanding
. Perhaps Roy Neuberger is not the center of the universe. Thus began a desperate search for truth that would lead him to immersion in Hinduism, Buddhism, Protestantism, and Catholicism. The answer did not come until eight years later, when he unexpectedly heard a message that would shake him to the core and give him the courage to reclaim his long-buried Jewish soul.
Written with unbridled passion, uncommon humility, and disarming candor, From Central Park to Sinai takes us on a tumultuous emotional journey from an empty secular life to a world of spiritual richness, guided by the belief that there is a very real entity Who created the world and whose rules we are obliged to follow.
Roy Neuberger's remarkable transformation from a Central Park rich kid to a deeply religious Jew mesmerizes, fascinates, inspires, and ultimately comforts us with the knowledge that if we dare to look within, we, too, can find the path to Sinai.
Foreword by Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs.
Customer Reviews:
An unparalled spiritual journey.......2006-10-13
To say that Roy Neuberger's book entitled "From Central Park to Sinai" was a real page turner, is a definite understatement. This most engrossing and captivating book details the story of a personal transformation of a man searching for spiritual meaning and purpose in his life. The grandson of a great rabbi and founder of the "Mussar" movement in Judaism, Rabbi Yisroel Salanter, Roy Neuberger's life couldn't be further apart from that of his grandfather. Educated in the traditions of ethical culturalism, Mr. Neuberger felt an ever present spiritual vacuum in his life and as such he embarked on a personal quest for truth, via the study of Catholicism, Protestantism and a whole host of other religions and value systems. He even wrote a book detailing why these other religions and their credos were superior to that of Judaism and why Judaism held no meaning.
Accompanying Mr. Neuberger on his trajectory towards spiritual fulfillment was that of his beloved wife, Linda, also a student of ethical culturalism. The fear and uncertainty that plagued Mr. Neuberger throughout his life could be simply termed as a man living through a perpetual anxiety attack with no relief in sight.
It would seem that G-d heard the inner cry and pain of Mr. Neuberger, and as destiny would have it, he was guided in the direction of Rebbetzen Esther Jungreis. That night in Neuburgh, NY changed the course of an entire generation of Neubergers. Mr. Neuberger was deeply impressed with Rebbetzen Jungreis' Torah message and he began to attend her classes on a weekly basis, despite the hardship of traveling such a long distance during a fuel crisis. Rebbetzen Jungreis served as a conduit to bring the message of G-d's love and compassion to a man who hungered and thirsted for spiritual guidance and meaning. In essence, Mr. Neuberger began to fall in love with G-d, embracing His Torah and commandments.
Since that time, Mr. Neuberger and his wife have raised a beautiful family steeped in Torah values and has spread his joy and understanding of spiritual truth with hundreds of people who he has invited to his home to enjoy the uplifting experience of Shabbos.
Mr. Neuberger's story will not only inspire, but will captivate the heart and soul of the reader. It is a must read for anyone searching for guidance and truth and even for those who are not searching for anything in particular. It is a welcome addition to any library and will remain within the recesses of the soul for posterity.
Heartfelt story, light read, lacks depth.......2005-08-26
This was a heartfelt story of a mensch who was dissatisfied with the lack of spirituality in bland liberal universalist culture in which he was raised. Eventually, he found true joy in Jewish orthodoxy. However, if you're pondering deep metaphysical issues, you'll find assertions here, but not deep abstract notions of different "isms" and why they are true or not. I was also uncomfortable with the assertion that Jewish assimilation caused the Holocaust.
Inspiration That Massages Your Soul.......2002-06-20
Roy Neuberger's journey to find himself is extremely inspiring. It goes to show you that a man can have all the money in the world, but without a some spiritual guidance, what is he really living for? In some ways his wealthy background was a great hinderance to him. His parents did not give Roy all the proper attention and guidance as the Ethical Cultural Schools merely confused his thinking.
Finally after 31 years, a colleague woke him up to the fact that he is a Jew whether he realizes it or not. Mr. Neuberger finally realized that he was not giving his own heritage a chance. Finally he asked to visit a synagogue with a friend and it so happened the Rebbetzin Jungeris was speaking there that night. At that point a chain reaction fo events triggered in Mr. Neuberger's brain that this was answer he was looking for.
The rest of the book consists of many powerful miracles based on prayer and faith in G_d. Although many of the stories are repeated from Esther Jungeris' The Committed Life, it is still a pleasure read about people turning their lives around by believing the Power of the Jewish Religion. Judaism encourages its followers to be strong and persist towards acheiving happiness and overcoming obstacles.
This book will make you believe in miracles even if you are not Jewish. An inspiration to us all.
Terrific book.......2001-10-22
Mr. Neuberger is a very enthusiastic and sincere man of faith, and these qualities shine through in his book.
This book has the power of spiritual elevation reinforced by a sense of personal discovery.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in religion, who can appreciate religion as an experience where personal growth and community involvement are not contradictory; but, parallel and mutually reinforcing.
A Moving Book for People of All Faiths.......2001-09-20
Roy Neuberger's personal story has a strong message even for non-Jews and for people who are not religious. His personal search for God is very moving and is written in a charming, conversational style. I was especially taken with his numerous stories about he and his wife, Leah, helping so many people from various walks of life. There are important messages in this book that will help all of us to live better and more enriching lives.
