Book Description
Jacques-Pierre Brissot was among the major architects of the French Revolution, yet history has vilified and then dismissed him. His early intellectual development was strongly influenced by Enlightenment ideas and aspirations. However, his own remarkable construct of a just, democratic society, universal suffrage, and a renewed humanity living in moral and political freedom foreshadowed many present-day ideologies. The prevailing view of Brissot has pigeonholed him as "Brissot, the police spy," a label difficult to remove. Although this contention has been disputed at some length, Loft presents an alternative view of the forces that shaped Brissot's social and political activism. Tracing the gradual evolution of his ideology from its earliest stages reveals that he did not suddenly become a radical in the mid-1780s. An open, objective, and thorough evaluation of Brissot's work uncovers the roots of his lifelong commitment to reformist, egalitarian, and democratic ideals. To understand Brissot, the man and his work, one must assess the cultural, intellectual, and political influences that surrounded him. Loft offers the necessary fusion of text and context, providing a serious reconsideration of Brissot and his contributions to the history of human rights. Scholars and other researchers of the French Revolution and European political thought will find this study of particular value.

Oklahoma Pioneer Review

Being a Wesley Hall fan I could not pass this one. A tale of proud
accomplishments in spite of strife, this is a story of doing it the hard way!
Most new immigrants going west found that to be their path in the early days
of the Oklahoma territory. This book is a necessary link in the continuing
biogrpahical odyssey of Wesley E Hall.

Customer Reviews:
What I needed- concisely.......2007-01-10
I knew what my concerns were with my literary Agent Agreement and what I wanted to say, but I didn't have a handy lawyer to draft the verbiage. I used Crawford's contract templates to dummy up the provisions I needed, and make sure I'd considered all the angles. This is a concise and targeted look at publishing-related contracts that's in understandable language and from the viewpoint of giving advantages and protections to the author. I hope one day to need the juicy ones even further back in the book.
Cutting Through a Complex Area.......2006-09-14
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.
"Business and Legal Forms" has the documents you'll need, such as copyright transer forms, publishing contracts and agreements. His descriptions are very helpful. Of greatest practical use, though, is the included DVD containing MS Word documents of all of the forms.
If you're just getting started writing, you need this book! It is not at all uncommon for creative work to be copied or outright stolen, so protect your rights as soon as you get started...
Easy to use, espec. with CD.......2003-02-03
This has all the basic forms you need. I had them on the CD and was able to "fix" them up to fit my needs more precisely. It was quick and user friendly. When you give a person a contract to sign, you want it to look professional. When done, I removed everything from my computer, and thereby, didn't use up memory.
Another Fill-in Test?.......2000-10-02
The most difficult part of filling-in forms is understanding the questions. Attorney Tad Crawford not only provides the forms you need, he explains your choices for each line. He begins with a discussion of contracting. Then he provides each contract with a discussion of that agreement and a negotiation checklist.
As an author and a publisher, who has run his own business for over 30 years, I highly recommend this valuable book. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.
An invaluable resource for authors and self-publishers........2000-05-04
Tad Crawford's instruction manual, Business and Legal Forms for Authors and Self-Publishers, provides over twenty blank forms and clear checklists and explanations for their use, appearing in a revised edition and including the forms on a handy cd-rom. The sample contracts are particularly useful in this business guide.

Customer Reviews:
lots there, but few color pics, some identification guides needed.......2005-12-06
Lots of example values of pieces. Few have pictures, and even fewer have color pics. The listings are organized by category, but beyond that the details are buried in text and could have been better-separated. (I.e. having date and location of manufacture called out would be helpful.)
I have a particular example--Chinese cloisonne pieces of particular ages have hand-written "China" on the bottom, while others have stamped "China" instead. This book does not clarify which mark identifies which era.
This sort of thing definitely could use digitization. I would *love* to be able to search the entire text with keywords. I am a collector of Chinese pieces with bats. These pieces range from cloisonne to porcelains.
I do appreciate identification guides for "signatures" and makers marks. I would have appreciated a guide to identifying fakes, as many of these items are faked on a regular basis.

Book Description
The painted illusion of woodgraining can turn an ordinary room into a grand "woodpanelled" setting, or transform a run of cheap malamine cupboards into elegant "mahogany." This book explains the techniques necessary to simulate many hardwoods and softwoods, and shows how to create fantasy effects. Advice is given on transforming floors, woodwork, walls, furniture, and more. Among the topics covered are basic techniques; specific simulations, including ash, oak, mahogany, maple, rosewood, bamboo, teak and pine; and planning a panelling system.

The Art of Woodgraining.......2006-07-24
This book is very helpful. I have a full automotive restoration shop and needed information on woodgraining as I will be doing a partial restoraton on a 1941 Packard and it involves woodgraining on the interior.
Well, if you like oil based...........2001-05-22
Having come from professional education of faux finishes utilizing water based products, this book leaves me with much to experiment with to adjust the recipes to water based products from the instructed oil based recipes in the book. Very detailed and beautiful marbling effects. Sienna, serpentine, yellow onyx, black marble and more are illustrated and fully instructed. Great pictures of faux marble finishes in lovely rooms to stimulate the imagination. I would really like to see a book with the great finishes using water based products. With today's great new glazes...I know it can be done

simple architecture.......2000-11-17
Some times is tired to see dutch arch. because their simplicity understood because their landscapes and towns so homogeneus, this book some times seems to represent this topics again only few works try to explore a different language and manners to think architectue. The difference with previous books about this important contest in europe is that this one includes a cd where you could see many projects of young european architecs -someones you'll see their good work soon- realized in the netherlands.

Customer Reviews:
Bullseye.......2001-11-27
I found this to be a wonderful book for both stay at home dads and also their wives. I have been staying home with my three children for five years now while my wife has been pursuing her career. As I read this book I found myself marking pages for my wife to read. Libby Gill was able to identify and clarify so many of the unique issues my wife and I have lived. It gave us both a better understanding of each other, and as a result our communication and support for each other has improved ten fold. There are so many unspoken challenges any family with a stay at home parent will experience. This book looks at these challenges and presents effective ways to look at them, and deal with them. I believe that whether you are a man or a woman, if you are at home with the kids now or simply thinking about your choices, you should read this book.
Dads can be Good Moms too!.......2001-11-06
There is a long-standing misconception that women are much better suited to raising children than men. There is also a long-standing belief that if only one parent is going work then it has to be the man. Baloney! As Ms. Gill points out in her wonderful new book, men are more than capable of assuming the primary care-giver role. "Stay-At-Home-Dads" is a fascinating look into the lives of these families and the challenges that they face. It is expertly researched and has a wealth of information for those of us who want to play a bigger role in our children's lives, but haven't had the courage to do so.
Right on Target.......2001-10-25
I have read Libby Gill's guide for Stay_At-Home-Dads, and I think she hits the nail right on the head. I am a stay at home dad, and in addition to taking care of two very active toddlers, my wife and I are renovating a seventy-seven year old farmhouse in Atlanta. I think Libby Gill's case studies are very sensible and her whole approach to a somewhat sensitive issue is genuine and humane. I loved the book.--Rod
Here's to creating more children-centered lifestyles!.......2001-09-07
Libby Gill's book "Stay-at-Home Dads" is a refreshing insightful look into the concept of the family. With so many families struggling with a two-career existence and starting a family, it's reassuring to know that there are many different solutions. It's wonderful to know that there are already so many families who put their children's welfare first. Libby Gill provides a guide to others considering how to maintain a healthly work-family balance and how to make your lifesytle child-centered.

Elvis Presley: The Man. The Life. The Legend.
ASIN: 0595092985 |
Book Description
In the fall of 1954, author Valerie Harms met Elvis after a concert in her high school auditorium. As Elvis toured Texas that year, she got to know what Elvis was like and she was even kissed by him. At the suggestion of a local disc jockey, Harms and her friends started a fan club, possibly the first. Elvis gave them photos, signed cards, and read the letters sent to him.
When Elvis Presley died, Valerie Harms resurrected her memorabilia of encounters with him and published the story of his life. More deeply than any other book, Tryin' To Get To You: The Story of Elvis Presley explores the early years of his life: his poor childhood in rural Tupelo, Mississippi, his teenage insecurities in a big city high school in North Memphis and early successes in the South.
Elvis Presley changed American culture with a new style of popular music; one based on country ballads, the gospel hymns of his youth, and the black rhythm and blues he heard as a teen. Tryin' To Get To You takes the reader behind-the-scenes of Elvis’ short, meteoric life and reveals his true personality.

Been a long time..........2001-05-28
I read this book when I was in 7th grade, which was.... oh, let's see... I'm 30 now... so that means I read this book approximately seven billion years ago. Or so it seems. Anyway, I also wrote a report on this book for English class. The book was okay, but to this day I remember one glaring error: the author named Elvis' first post-army film "G.I. Joe." Of course, that title should be "G.I. Blues." Hopefully that error has been corrected in this new edition.
author speaks:.......2000-11-17
In the fall of 1954 I was 14 and living in the very small town Stamford, Texas, where Elvis came to sing, accompanied by Scotty and Bill. Elvis had just recorded "That's All Right, Mama" and Sun Records would produce four more in quick succession, as Elvis toured around in his pink Cadillac. The night he appeared in our high school auditorium (tickets $.25), he wore ivory shirt, slacks and shoes. I had never been to a "concert" before but I was totally crazy about him from the start. A couple of my friends and I rushed backstage and got his autograph. We stayed up late that night gushing about his music, smile, and unusual Adonis-like appearance. In the early morning we heard where the guys were eating breakfast, and we rushed over. He invited us to join them.
As Elvis toured Texas that year, we went too and always were invited backstage. I got to know what Elvis was like then and was even kissed by him. In between stops we had energy to burn and the local disc jockey (wisely) suggested we start a fan club. Elvis gave us photos, signed cards, and read letters that came to me.
This book was first published after Elvis' death and is now restored to print by a special program of the Authors Guild. That's me in the cover photo standing to Elvis' right.
Book Description
In this fresh account of Benjamin Disraeli's life, Paul Smith looks at his unique character as a fusion of Jewishness and Anglicanism, outsider and insider, nationalist and European, Romantic and Tory; and shows how this formed his "appeal as an original and a card, the most piquant joker in the pack", a faintly raffish outsider who scaled the highest peaks of public life.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not great.......2004-10-07
Overall, this brief biography offers an interesting portrait of a commanding political figure of the Victorian era. In order to fully appreciate Smith's rendition, however, one should become acquainted with (if not actually reading) Disraeli's novels, as his writing seems to be Smith's point of departure, and frequent point of reference in telling the story of Disraeli's life. I, for one, was less interested in linking the biographical themes in Disraeli's novels to his life's events, and more interested in capturing the essence of the epoch, with more detail and attention paid to the political developments of Disraeli's age.
A Too Brief Biography.......2001-05-20
Paul Smith attempts the impossible - to write a brief life - of the complex, remarkable and enigmatic Jewish politician and author Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield. Smith almost pulls it off but another 50 or so pages would have given him much more scope to portray Disraeli's major contributions to the politics of identity, social and political reform and the recognition of the inevitability of working class emancipation. Smith allows his fascination with Dizzy's Jewishness and "outsider" status to overwhelm the other facets of his character and beliefs. Part of Dizzy's greatness as a politician was the ability to simultaneously portray himself as the ultimate outsider and the loyal, patriotic "insider." Until the election of Ramsey MacDonald as the first Labour Prime Minister in the 1920s, Disraeli stands alone as the most unlikely Prime Minister Britain ever had. Smith's book includes some good quotes from commentators such as Gladstone and Michael Foot. A book deserving a fuller treatment in its second edition but still a very useful introduction to its subject for young students of 19th century history.
Disraeli: A Brief Life.......2000-09-05
This is written for a british school person taking his or her O and or A levels. It is an enjoyeable read which put Disraeli in a comptempary historical view point. Yes, the Author actually compares Disraeli and his government to the tories of the 80's under the iron rule of Thatcher.
