The title says it all.......2000-09-27

If anyone could write of politics as a noble calling, it would be Cliff White (no relation to me). White first became active in politics in the 1940s working for his fellow New Yorker, Gov. Tom Dewey. White is best remembered for the stunning upset he engineered with a movement that drafted Barry Goldwater to run for President in 1964 and won the nomination for Goldwater over the self-financed campaign of Nelson Rockefeller. He later engineered James Buckley's 1970 Senate victory in New York, and he served in key roles in the campaigns of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. William F. Buckley rightly described him as "a genuine pioneer in the technologization of the democratic art."

This book represent White's memoirs; and while it does tell us a great deal about White's life and his exploits in electoral politics, it also gives us a detailed account of the rise of the conservative movement over the last 50 years. Conservatives and liberals alike will appreciate the history lessons found throughout. The "behind-the-scenes" details of the presidential elections of the last half of this century are particularly interesting and insightful.

All in all, this is a wonderful read about a man of character, dignity and ability who is sorely missed.

Inspiring!.......2004-10-05

Those who say this isn't the "real" doll house are missing the point entirely! The Williamsburg house was specially made because "Thaddeus Crane" and "Emma Birdwhistle" never had their own proper dollhouse, but lived on shelves. The book explains this quite clearly. The one-quarter life size scale is fascinating in itself. Anyone who is a fan of handmade dolls, doll houses, or Tasha Tudor should delight in this amazing book. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

This isn't Tasha's dollhouse, like I thought it was. I got suckered in like many. Still, it is a well presented book with delightful pictures. And the furnishings are Tasha Tudor's. The ideas and elements of the design are well within the reach of the serious dollhouse collector and for that, the product of emulation, it is invaluable and inspiring. But like Coleen Moore's dollhouse, and Queen Mary's, there is a lot about it that are not within the reach of the average person. One has to realize this was not an authentic doll house, but a item made for display for people to marvel at. And marvel we do. The plans shown in there are adaptable. But I would much rather have seen Tasha's dollhouse...the real thing.

Accompanying Harry Davis' kaleidoscopic descriptions is illustrations and photographs by Jay Paul. The book is well designed and depicts a wide range of Christmas activities centering on how Ms. Tudor and friends celebrate the season of joy. This is a wonderful gift for individuals who enjoy the art of Tasha Tudor as Mr. Davis and Mr. Paul pay homage to the great artist.

MISLEADING...NOT REALLY TASHA TUDOR'S DOLLHOUSE.......2000-07-09

I am surprised to find out that Tasha Tudor's actual dollhouse is not pictured in the book, because the title leads us to believe we will see the "real" thing. Instead we see a re-creation by Colonial Williamsburg. My understanding was that the blank pages and extra white space were to have had art by Tasha Tudor. Little Brown is quoted in the Tudor bibliography as planning 20 line drawings and 20 watercolors by Tudor. Did she refuse to do the drawings because she didn't approve of Harry Davis' writing the book? Aside from the furnishings being from Tasha, the house we really see is a recent replica and is misleading. I would rather see Tasha Tudor's real dollhouse not a newly made replica. I was disappointed with this book, especially knowing that Tasha did not want it published.

Nice artwork in the form of black-and-white line-art but limited usefulness and these pictures are not provided on CD-ROM. Would have at least given 4 stars if a CD-ROM with the pictures in various graphics file format is provided.

I know some may think of this as being for group study, but I enjoy it for my own personal bible study. It's just the right amount of info to get my day started off, whether at home or on the train. The CD-ROM has so many tools good for digging deeper.

Put on the enclosed CD, listen and read and get ready to marvel at the paths Ben Sidran's life has taken. His openness to experience has allowed him to meet, play with, interview and write about musicians from around the world. Ben chronicles his constant battle to stay true to the music, rather than the money or fame.

Living in Madison, I have been lucky enough to hear performances by Ben Sidran playing with various musicians who are mentioned in the book. The best is being lucky enough to see him perform with his son, Leo. His joy and pride in sharing the stage with Leo is evident.

The jazz history in the book allowed me to put many of my jazz cd's, Sidran's and others, in a context of the flow of jazz history. It also made me proud of Madison, my favorite place to live.

Feelin' Ben's Groove.......2003-02-12

This is a great read. If you are a Ben Sidran fan you have been waiting for this for years, If you are a music fan you won't be able to put it down and if you like biographies in general you will be interested. Can't lose here! And as an extra special bonus the book comes with a great compilation CD that is worth the price of the book alone!

Essential!.......2007-05-18

"Fire in his Soul" is the only significant work documenting the life of Joe Harriott. The book is heavily researched, profoundly revealing, and absolutely essential to understanding the music and life of Joe Harriott. The only complaint I have is with Robertson's writing style, which at times is a bit too informal and disorganized. This is just an issue of personal preference however; I still highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Harriott's music.
