        Book Description

Electronic Commerce and Multi-Jurisdictional Taxation (2001) is the successor to the widely-acclaimed Electronic Commerce and International Taxation (1999). The new edition contains expanded and enhanced consideration of the tax treatment of electronic commerce from both an income tax and a consumption tax perspective. Not only does the new edition provide a detailed and up-to-date analysis of VAT developments regarding e-commerce, but it also explores the implications of e-commerce for the US state and local sales and use tax regime. The new edition discusses developments in Europe and the United States while enlarging its focus to include the tax treatment of e-commerce in China, India, Canada, Australia, and throughout the world. At the same time, the authors have deftly woven the latest OECD and European Community developments into the fabric of the book. There is no other book on the market today that analyzes the practical tax consequences of e-commerce with the multi-jurisdictional and multi-tax perspective of this insightful work by distinguished academics and practitioners Richard Doernberg, Luc Hinnekens, Walter Hellerstein, and Jinyan Li.

            Book Description

Many new color photographs showcasing thousands of machine-made and contemporary marbles have been added to make this book an even bigger Big Book of Marbles. This third edition brings marble collectors even more information, with added discussion on marbles at auctions, art glass and new comics, and listings of marble clubs. Grist has also drawn from one of his other books, Machine-Made Contemporary Marbles, for this new edition. Now with almost 400 large, detailed full-color photographs, this book is the essential resource for the marble collector. Fifty new shots have been added to the 400 detailed color photographs, and over 1,000 marbles produced by West Virginia companies have been identified for this new edition. The author enlisted the help of knowledgeable historian Ron Shepherd, co-founder and past president of the West Virginia Marble Collectors Club for this volume.

            5 out of 5 stars Marbles.......2007-09-21

Everett Grist's Big Book of Marbles is very comprehensive and extremely well illustrated. It will be a great reference for both hand-made and machine-made marbles. The price estimates given for the illustrations are realistic in my opinion and will be helpful in valuing my collection.

2 out of 5 stars Some nice pictures, but woefully inadequate.......2007-06-17

I decided after attending a national collector-run marble show in my area to get this updated Third Edition of Grist's book, because it looked like it would have enough new pictures to make identifying all those troublesome common marbles a possibility. And the pictures in the book are nice, being clear and color-accurate, and showing multiple marbles so one can see the range of designs/colors that fall within a category. However, I've always considered Grist to be a lazy author, and this just confirms it. Yes, it takes some work to get the pictures of so many marbles, but that is something almost anyone could eventually do. This is sub-titled a 'comprehensive' ID book, so I expected Grist to deliver. He does not even come close to delivering on that promise! First of all, many marbles are left out and many more poorly dealt with. As new as I am to marbles, even I know that there are subtle differences that help one to differentiate between marble companies. Yet Grist has virtually NO TEXT explaining how to ID various types of marbles. It is simply pictures and an occassional comment, and as we all know, pictures of certain marbles, such as cateyes, do not do justice in showing the differences. Those need to be EXPLAINED (how many vanes, shape, etc) because the differences usually do not show well in pictures. None of this happens. Many of the Peltier marbles are simply lumped together as 'Champion Jrs.' with none of the common names used in the trade included. And as far as being a comprehensive value guide, only ranges are given with no differention for size or condition given. That is hardly a comprehensive price guide! On top of that, most prices on common marbles (under $10 each) appear to be grossly inflated over what is actually happening in the marketplace today. I wish I could get those prices for my commons - I'd be rich! The final insult is the poor editing done in the book. "Peltier" is spelled "Pelitier" half the time. There are pictures where the heading states "row 1" when it means "column 1." Just plain sloppy. Most pictures of the rarities have no prices at all and only general category IDs for the entire group shown. In general, a nice picture book but nothing about it is 'comprehensive' - just more false advertising. Why can't anyone put out a book with the quality and extent of pictures Grist does and the helpful, detailed text and variety listings such as Block attempts? Then we would be approaching a 'comprehensive ID and value guide.' So far, I've found nothing close.

4 out of 5 stars Good marble identification book.......2005-08-29

Excellent book for identification of marble types and values, and for general history of marble manufacture and select manufacturers. Grist details characteristics of marbles to identify the manufacturing method and general production dates, but you cannot identify marbles to manufacturer or more specific production dates by this book. Excellent pictures and selection of marbles. Overall, this is a good quality marble book.

4 out of 5 stars Really Great Book on Marbles.......2005-01-06

As a serious marble collector, I think this book is invaluable. It's informative and very well put together. I believe it could also work well for non-marble collectors. Marbles are pretty universally fascinating and this book can inform anyone about the worth and characteristics of marbles.

E.B. White and his son Joel both had a respect for beauty, simplicity, and practicality when it came to their work. For E.B., it was writing. He talks about these qualities in The Elements of Style, the classic guide to English-language usage, and he demonstrates them in works like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. For Joel, it was building and designing boats that are "simple of line yet sound in engineering, traditional above water and modern below." A Unit of Water, a Unit of Time is a touching, engaging look at the life, work, and influence of Joel White and the craft of boat making.

Whynott spent a year (June 1996 to July 1997) at White's boat yard in Brooklin, Maine. At the time, White was battling cancer, nearing the end of his life, and designing what would be his last boat, the W-76, a wooden racing yacht with "sublime lines and exquisite rigging." A Unit of Water, the result of that experience, traces White's life from his birth in 1930 to his childhood spent in New York and Maine, his naval architecture studies at MIT, and his eventual move to Brooklin, where he began working at the small boat yard that eventually became his own. In the early '80s, White and his crew stopped making fiberglass boats in favor of wooden ones; Brooklin, headquarters for WoodenBoat magazine and the WoodenBoat School, became the center of the wooden-boat revival and White something of a boat-building guru. The book looks closely at the art of boat making--shaping deck beams, making bronze chocks, boring holes through sternposts--and the many characters in the Brooklin boat-building community. It's very interesting stuff, and Whynott tells the story simply and thoughtfully, emulating White's philosophies. He also describes White's health battles with respect and poignancy and without getting overly sentimental.

Joel White was a man of few words who tended to downplay his accomplishments, but they shine through in A Unit of Water. One Brooklin boat builder, describing the "soul" of boats, could have been describing White: "Boats are live. They talk. The more poorly made boats talk more. The best-made boats don't talk as much. They're quiet--quiet soldiers, they call them." --Andy Boynton

              Book Description

In a time when racing boats are mass-produced from synthetic materials, a dying breed of craftsman continues to build wooden sailboats of astonishing beauty. Boatbuilding is an ancient art, and Joel White was a master. Son of the legendary writer E.B. White, he was raised around boats and his designs were as sublime and graceful as his father's prose. At a boatyard in Maine, White and his closely knit team of builders brought scores of his creations from blueprints into the ocean.

In June 1996, six months after being diagnosed with cancer, Joel White began designing the W-76, an exquisite racing yacht. It was his final masterpiece. Douglas Whynott spent a year at Brooklin Boat Yard, observing as this design took shape, first in sketches and then during the painstaking building of the wooden craft.

The result is the poignant tale of both a genius at work and the people devoted to his art. Evoking E.B. White's New England and its salty residents, A Unit of Water, a Unit of Time is a classic portrait of dignity, charm, and humble magnificence-and of a maritime community that keeps a vanishing world alive.

              5 out of 5 stars Life in a Boatyard.......2000-12-27

As someone who has spent time scraping and painting the bottom of a large sailing boat, this book brought back all the sights and sounds of a boatyard. I could smell the dust and paint fumes, feel the smoothness of varnished rails, and sense the excitment when each boat was hoisted into the water. This book should interest all aspiring boat builders, and prepare them for the painstaking work of boat design, construction and restoration.

Wynott does a superb job describing the interpersonal dynamics of a boatyard's personnel and the importance of good management. Though I found myself irritated at Steve, Joel White's son, for spending his winter in the Carribean during his father's last year, Steve's management style is instructive for leading a group of talented artisans, be they boat builders, scientific researchers, or writers.

I savored every page of this short book, sometimes reading each section twice as not to miss the rich details. It made me laugh, such as the passage about novice sailors who they ended being towed into port and decided to buy a boat anyway, and cry -- Joel's death. I recommend it highly for all who find satisfaction in "messin' around with boats." This book squarely dispells what every boat owner already knows: Boating only looks romantic!

              5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written.......2000-08-09

I read this book while I was vacationing in Maine. It made me have an understanding and appreciation of what goes on in those boat yards along the coast. It also made me wish I knew Joel White and some of the other boatbuilders. I found the end of this book very touching. The author portrays White's illness, but doesn't make it seem maudlin or sentimental. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in boats or the people who live in Maine.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..........2000-06-12

I agree with the reviewer who suggested that this book really needs some illustrations. Whynott's word-pictures just aren't sufficient for those whose knowledge of sailing boats is limited.

As a non-reader of Wooden Boats magazine, the source of much of the info here, I'd love to have seen photos or sketches of the boats mentioned, as well as the boatyard crew.

And for the ocean-loving landlubbers among us, a good glossary would be a godsend. For example, what's deadwood? or a spoon-shaped bow?

It's also a bit of a stretch to say that Whynott wrote this book. Take out the extensive -- and wonderful -- citations from the writings of E.B. White and his son, Joel that Whynott lovingly included, and not much of the writing came from the pen/typewriter/PC of Whynott. What did is quite well written, sometimes really well written, however.

What this book really did is send me searching for my copy of E.B. White's "One Man's Meat." I'm not surprised to see this title in the "others who bought this book" section here on amazon.com.

I'm also gonna check out "The Yard: Building a Destroyer at the Bath Iron Works," by Michael S. Sanders. The Boston Globe review of this book is what interested me in Whynott's book -- which the reviewer liked a lot.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong Title, Lost Story.......2000-05-09

Don't buy this book if you want to learn more about Joel White and his "last" boat - the W-Class (W-76 specifically) yachts. At most there is probably less than 7 pages of text devoted to the creation of the W-Class boats.

The W-Class racing yacht is not even mentioned in the book until page around page 100. The whole W-76 story is a very small sideline to the whole. Probably five pages of text out of the whole book are dedicated to the W-76. What a missed story! I asked for the book specifically because I wanted to learn more about the W-76. There is more about the W-76 in the five page WoodenBoat issue #150, Sept/Oct '99 than in this entire book!

There was so much not said here. The vision for the W-Class boats is never discussed. Donald Tofias who commissioned the design of the boat is only given one or two lines of text in the whole book. How did Joel envision the W-class boats, did he view the design as his final masterpiece? Did he want to design the other boats in the series? Etc, etc...

In fact, if you want to know more about Joel White you will not find it in this book.

The best way to summarize this book is that you are sitting at a table for dinner with some very interesting, nice but humble people while at the table beside you sits a very famous person that you have always wanted to meet. You try to listen to the conversation coming from the next table but unfortunately, you do not want to be rude, and the people at your table demand your attention so you only hear a few bits and pieces from the other table.

That is how I felt about this book. The book follows the Brooklin Boat yard employees work lives during the last year of Joel White's life. (Nice people, nice story, but I wanted to learn about Joel) As far as boats are concerned, the book is really about the Center Harbor 31 series of boats. The book begins with the launching of the first two - Grace and Linda and follows the construction of the third and forth Pudding and The Mantlepiece. One last grip. The Center Harbor 31 is discussed in detail in the book, but no pictures or drawings of the boat are provided. Ever read a book about architecture or art without a picture? Well that is what you get here!

All in all, a frustrating and disappointing book. Joel White and the W-76 deserved better.

A lyrical portrait of men who practice a timeless art. At the Brooklin Boat Yar in Brooklin, Maine, local craftsmen build boats of stunning beauty by shaping wood to the specifications of Joel White, one of the last great boat designers of his breed, father to boatyard owner Steve White, son to legendary writer EB White. In June 1996, Joel began designing his masterpiece, the W-76, a wooden racing yacht with sublime lines and exquisite rigging. In January of that year, he had been diagnosed with cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Full time Dad praises Lukken's book.......1999-09-08

As a recently divorced man with full time custody of three preschoolers, I was desparate for information about making sure my kids would succeed in school. A friend at work suggested this book and it has been a great help to me. Basically, I learned to trust my instincts, and just knowing where to look for answers was a great relief. The author did a good job of covering all the bases. (This is a good book to have on the shelf for reference of the stages of childhood, what's normal, what's not.)

I'm a new mother with a law degree. Needless to say, I don't know much about early childhood development. I was concerned about what was "normal" for pre-school children and what was expected of them before they entered the classroom. This book was amazing! It covered every possible question I could have thought of, as well as a few handy tips for discipline. I find myself refering to it constantly, and feel much more confident about my child's readiness and social skills. This book is a MUST for anyone with pre-school children.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and Entertaining Book .......2005-01-07

I am not a big fan of Shania, but I read the book out of curiosity. The book talks about the technical and business side of the music industry and a little bit about women in music which I enjoyed very much. I didn't agree with some of Mr. Brown's views where he justifies women using their sexuality in order to succeed among other things in the book. But he's a man and I am sure these women make good eye candy for him ;). If you are a Shania fan you'll love this book and love Shania that much more. As somebody who only likes some of her songs, I am better able to understand what makes the woman tick and what influenced her to make the career choices she did. I give Shania credit for being smart and versatile. I do believe that Shania needs to have a longer career in order to write a really great retrospective of her career, but I guess this will do for now.

Overall this is a fun book that gives you a glimpse on the music business and Shania Twain. I would suggest taking some of the author's views with a grain of salt because his tone is subjective throughout the book.

My first time writing a review online,on a book which i never read...(this is what you call INTEGRITY=) )
Quite surprised to see my friend's review above. Thought he would hardly waste his precious time singing songs for some books. All along trust his taste, so guess this should be a not bad one that deserves a closer look, especially if you are a fan of Shania. Me myself not a soooo big fan, but do appreciate her music.Am loyal to Jacqueline du Pre, the great British cellist. Read most of her biographies, and was greatly inspired by them. So by Mathematical induction, if you love Shania, why not try the book...'Cause you never know how great an impact it may have on your life, just as those of du Pre have influenced mine. <

5 out of 5 stars Shania Twain rules once against.......2001-01-12

I never knew much about country diva Shania Twain's life story until after reading Jim Brown's Shania Twain : Still The One. Shania is indeed an aspiration for all of us to persevere in order to succeed in life. Written in easily readable English, this book focuses on the delectable diva's early years and her phenomenal success up to present day.

The life of Shania Twain is a Cinderella story plucked from a country song. It indeed took true grit for this sultry songbird to rise from a hardscrabble childhood to megastardom. I couldn't put this book down once I laid hands on it. A must have books for all fans of Shania. Even if your are not, read this and I won't be surprised that you will become an instant fan!
