Dark Wind is much more than one man's story of a disastrous sailing trip that cost the life of his lover, though its blow-by-blow narrative of the typhoon that wrecked their ship and swept them into the sea is reason enough to read his searing memoir. What distinguishes Gordon Chaplin's book from others of its kind is its stripped-down prose, its unsentimental depiction of a passionate but less-than-perfect romance, and its bleak acceptance of the fact that "actions have consequences"--in this case, fatal ones. Chaplin and Susan Atkinson met when she was married to his college roommate. Their shared love of adventure was soon apparent when, on a sail with their then respective spouses, the two argued for outrunning a storm that their partners wanted to avoid by returning to shore. When they got together 12 years later, her marriage had failed and the affair blew his apart. Risk taking was one of the foundations of their relationship, but it always came harder to Atkinson than to Chaplin, and in the end it undid them. Real failure is the crux of this memoir, and it's both terrifying and oddly liberating to read this scarifying account by a writer who honestly admits to being "someone whose best wasn't good enough." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
In 1992 Gordon Chaplin and Susan Atkinson set off from the Mosquito Coast in a thirty-six-foot sailboat. Behind them were the choices they had made--to leave their spouses and families and live life together on the edge. Ahead of them was the gleaming Pacific, schools of dolphins and flying fish, and days marked by the rising and setting of the sun. They had an intense romance, fueled by their love of the sea, for adventure, and for risk. Then, in a hidden paradise called Wotho atoll, a dark wind caught up with Chaplin and Atkinson, and plunged them into a horrific, tragic night.
Chaplin looks back at the forces that drove them to Wotho atoll, at the choices they made, the things that might have changed their fate, and at his own culpability in the disaster. Both an adventure tale and a cry of the heart, Dark Wind is a pulse-pounding tale of the sea and a haunting voyage of the human conscience--a powerful and truly unforgettable work.
"Courageous and powerful . . . Chaplin is an accomplished writer . . . This is a book about love, its elusiveness, its power, its necessity." --The Baltimore Sun
"Vivid, tense, and moving." --The New York Times Book Review

A book written from the heart.......2005-08-27
After reading some of these reviews I wonder if the people writing them actually read the book or maybe they never experienced a lost love. It is clear the author has written a very gripping account of paradise found and lost. I give him credit for seeking it out and finding it which is something most people never do. I have just started sailing and this book has reminded me just how powerful and deadly a force nature can be, regardless of preparation and skill. It is a risk all people who venture out to sea take and it is no different than driving a car. It is a good thing if this book causes people to err on the side of caution.
A very moving memoir.......2004-02-24
I've read this book twice in the last two weeks, A very moving story of two people looking for adventure. After both previous marriges fall apart they set upon a journy that ultimately takes the life of one and leaves the other searching his soul for forgiveness. Some how it has left me feeling evey emotion that I think Mr Chaplin had wanted to achieve with the writing of this book. A great book! A real joy reading. I just wish it were possible to tell Mr. Chaplin himself.
error in listing........2001-11-09
I am the author of Dark Wind, Gordon Chaplin, and this is not a review. I'd like to correct your listing of my books, which begins with the out of print audiobook version of Dark Wind, instead of the in-print paperback edition. Would it be possible to list the paperback first? Thank you for your attention.

not too much love but a lot of loss.......2001-04-06
If you want modern sailing, adventures, dilemmas, botched revenges, lies, exotic settings, anxious families back home and eventual disaster in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places in the world, this is your book. Dark wind tells an average tale about contemporary sailors: middle-aged couple, bouncing out of failed marriages, decides to have the big trip before it's too late: Belize, Panama, back to the US by plane, when the family needs attention, and beyond. Twilights, sunsets, the weird floating society of a port full of foreigners and their boats. Lonesome beaches, mechanical mishaps, the purchase of an EPIRB system: no classic sailing story, here, in the manner of Patrick O'Brien, but autopilots, engines and tourism. People who argue, face hard times and may look selfish. No multi-talented sailor-hero around the world on sight, either. This book is a memoir, a real story about people who suffered while chasing their dreams, and it rings true, even if it's not, which is rather out of the point as far as I'm concerned. It also provides a charming route to follow in the future, autopilot and all. And it taught me something else: if the hurricane comes close, don't ever do what they did.
a brave memoir.......2001-02-11
Some reviewers may not have liked Gordon personally (a bit self-absorbed, seems to bail on his daughters, runs off with his friend's wife...), but they shouldn't hold that against his tale. The story of his ill-fated trip is more of a memoir than an adventure. I'm not sure how a critic could say the story was not convincing -- it's real and very affecting. I don't want to give away the plot, but this is a wrenching tale. How many times have we thought, "If I'd only done x, y or z..." Gordon rakes himself over the coals over and over again, but nothing can bring back the past. I thought he was brave to write of his own personal suffering, even if you don't happen to side with him. I agree that the writing wasn't as good as the very best, but it was exciting and detailed and very solid. Okay, not literary, but respectable enough for its genre. Overall, if you like a bit of the personal mixed in with adventure, you will appreciate this book although remember it is difficult in parts because of the tragedy. Overall, it was an absorbing read.

Book Description
Today antitrust law shapes the policy of almost every large company, no matter where headquartered. But this wasn't always the case. Before World War II, the laws of most industrial countries tolerated and even encouraged cartels, whereas American statutes banned them. In the wake of World War II, the United States devoted considerable resources to building a liberal economic order, which Washington believed was necessary to preserving not only prosperity but also peace after the war. Antitrust was a cornerstone of that policy. This fascinating book shows how the United States sought to impose -- and with what results -- its antitrust policy on other nations, especially in Europe and Japan.
Wyatt Wells chronicles how the attack on cartels and monopoly abroad affected everything from energy policy and trade negotiations to the occupation of Germany and Japan. He shows how a small group of zealots led by Thurman Arnold, who became head of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division in 1938, targeted cartels and large companies throughout the world: IG Farben of Germany, Mitsui and Mitsubishi of Japan, Imperial Chemical Industries of Britain, Philips of the Netherlands, DuPont and General Electric of the United States, and more. Wells brilliantly shows how subsequently, the architects of the postwar economy -- notably Lucius Clay, John McCloy, William Clayton, Jean Monnet, and Ludwig Erhard -- uncoupled political ideology from antitrust policy, transforming Arnold's effort into a means to promote business efficiency and encourage competition.

Customer Reviews:
I like it, but..........2007-03-03
I really fell in love with this book. I am a young adult and my motherly instinct is kicking in. I absolutely loved the look of the baby snuggle. However, the book only came with the gauge for the smaller sized needles (which are used to create the edging on the hood and sleeves, I believe), so the main portion of the snuggle is turning out to be much too large (I calculated it out to be 36 inches!) I've only done a little more than half of the first side and I am getting so frustrated! My life would be so much easier if the gauge for both needle sizes were in the pattern instead of the gauge for the smaller needles only. This is the only pattern I really wanted to knit from the book because it is so unique to all the other baby patterns I've seen. I'm afraid that now I may have to rip out all of my work and start over with much smaller needles. I would love to know the previous reviewer's gauge as mine seems way too big for a newborn child. Maybe a 1-2 year old would fit it. I have no idea. [...]
fresh designs.......2006-11-18
I really like the designs in this book - just as good if not better than the previous Adorable Knits (which I am also a fan of). I've knitted the Baby Snuggly and it turned out great, so I don't know what went wrong for the other reviewer. I know some of the patterns do have corrections to them but they're available from Hamlyn, the UK publisher (email info-ho@hamlyn.co.uk).
fun, funky patterns.......2006-02-14
I bought this book after buying Adorable Knits for Tiny Tots and knitting several items from that book. From this one I have made the teddy, the cloud pillow and am about 70% of the way through the kaleidoscope blanket (I decided that knitting 49 squares was too much like hard work and so adapted the pattern to be knit all in one go on a circular needle- its going well but maybe the squares would have been easier!). My knitting friend has also made the dolly with fabulous results. With the exception of the cloud pillow I have substituted local yarns with no problems. the only problem I have had was with yarn quantities- The cloud pillow called for six balls of expensive Rowan yarn, which was more that enough for two pillows. I plan to knit the star and moon blanket and the kitty cat jumper next. This is a lovely book with plenty of fabulous patterns.
Many Flaws in Mellor's 'Nursery Knits'.......2005-08-09
This book's patterns are seriously flawed. My attempt to follow the "outdoor snuggly" for a 0-3 month old baby resulted in a 32 inch waistline snuggly with legs that were too long and arms that were too short. In addition, the photos of the snuggly did not match the pattern's instructions. My cousin used the baby poncho pattern and had a myriad of similar problems. Do NOT buy this book!

Best Quilt Book of 2005.......2005-10-22
With 126 pages, this book is loaded. There are 39 projects and the authors have designated skill levels for each: 19 beginner projects, 13 intermediate, and 7 advanced. You'll see folksy homespun projects as well as breath-takingly elegant ones. Quilts, tree skirts, wall-hangings, a gift bag, table runners, and stockings. Some applique, a few paper-piecing, and even redwork. Beautiful photography provides such inspiration, as the diagrams and instructions ensure success. What you won't see is the "quilt as desired" copout: Quilting suggestions are provided and truly helpful. Some of the items can be made with leftovers from the other projects. How cool is that? I confess that I was leery of the template method for the Dancing Stars Tree Skirt; but, it was just too pretty to pass up. Surprisingly, it came together easy and quick despite the templates and I am so enthused and confident that I may take a shot at cleaning the garage. But first, I want to make the Holly Jolly Basket.
Wonderful book of Christmas crafts........2005-09-23
I bought this book to fill in an order from Amazon, and it was a wonderful surprise. Every pattern in it is one that I want to make. Very well put together and a wonderful Christmas book for any quilter.

GARBAGE Y. Liu "My Baby Can Read" Review is GARBAGE.......2007-04-20
The review written Y. Liu "My Baby Can Read" is TOTAL GARBAGE.
The book is very good and you should get it but his review is only to try to get you to purchase some software off of Ebay. I unfortunately did this and it is GARBAGE! A total waste of money barely installed and after it did and I got it running I wish I had not. I have seen better programming from Junior High kids on there TI-83 Calculators. Nothing in his Ebay description accurately describes the software and he refuses to let you try it because he know if you did you wouldn't buy it. So BUYER BEWARE...
...
On a lighter note I own all of the Glenn Doman Books and they all are very good. the how smart is my baby is a mix of them all but I would recommend just getting all the others they have better detail for specific areas.
Doman's this book and Reading book and Math book turned my baby son to be a .......2006-04-30
I was so lucky to read this book and 4 other books by the same author when my baby son was 9-mon, I spent 5 nights to read Doman's 5 books, and started to teach my son with Doman's method immediately. I started with 25 words and add 5 new words every day, 1 second per word, 3 times a day. Same thing with the bits cards and math cards. To my surprise, my son absorbed every thing so quickly and after 3 weeks, he started pointing to the right objects so often when I showed him the word!
I attended Dr. Doman's "How to multiply your baby's intelligence" baby brain development course in his "The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential" in Philadelphia in order to meet those experts and little geniuses in person. The Institute is for both well babies and brain injured babies, which was founded by Doman 50 years ago. It is a non-profit organization. ([...])
We saw all those 4-6 year-old kids and other 8-12 year-olds in their Institutes could read more than 3 languages, read many big thick books, do Math, science and encyclopedia, gymnastics, swim, play violin in almost professional high level!!! They were taught by their parents who most of them did not have any foreign languages and musical background and etc. Everybody in the class was astonished, thrilled and speechless; many were cried in the very formal graduation ceremony.
I started teaching my son reading when he was 9 months old. And the result was amazing. Three weeks later he could point to his name word when I say his name; and point to my bellybutton when I showed him the big word card: bellybutton. However, he lost interest of reading completely in 2 months when he can walk around. I had to stop my teaching for a while and search for methods that can intrigue his interest.
When he turned 18 months old, he can accurately name and read every part of the world map puzzle, he can read all other body and organ parts words and flower/tree parts words and other 1,000 words cards. When he is 21 months old, he can read dozens of children books. Now my son is 25 months old, I am starting teaching him the elementary curriculum for 10 to 20 minutes every day.
My son is just an ordinary child, if you think he is a GENIUS, then every baby is a GENIUS including your baby, as stated in Doman's theory, because every baby is able to read and do math if you prepare such an environment and opportunity for him to learn. And babies love to learn, it is fun and it is their surviving skill...
You do not need a college degree to be able to send your child to college or even Harvard, the love with all your heart to your child makes the real difference when you decide not taking the chance of winning a baby Einstein lottery that might be related to your family Genius Gene. Every hard effort you put to your baby, God knows, and your child knows.
Do not waste your baby's precious first 6 genius years! I highly recommend this book and all Dr.Doman's books!
It might be too overwhelmed to spend weeks to cut and write hundreds of words cards and math cards, you can buy a set of "Teach your baby to read within one year kit" for $9.99 on eBay. You can type the keyword "Teach Your Baby to Read within 1 Year Kit / Montessori" on eBay to search for the kit and the relevant subjects' material.
Customer Reviews:
This really works........2003-10-21
I wanted to pipe in that we have used this and the other Doman books with our 3 children with wonderful success. This book is so easy to follow, and will provide you with many hours of joyful interaction with your child. We started the BITS with my son at 8 months and at 6yrs old he is now doing 5th grade work with ease.
A real eye opener!.......2000-03-25
This book has its pros and cons to be sure. However, the most important aspect of this book was not the individual facts the author encourages you to teach, but the vast potential he shows each and every child to possess. Your child. My child. The neighbor's child. Despite what others have come to believe and thus expect from little children, their potential is vast. And the book tells you how children most easily pick up information.
I found the work in preparing the "Bits of Intelligence" cards to be time consuming and/or expensive, but the outcome is real and the learning process a great deal of fun for my girls ages 4 and 1 1/2. They love spending the short focussed, happy time with their mom. The book encourages you to physically hug and verbally encourage your children before and after each learning period of 30 sec - 2 min. What child wouldn't love a no pressure, mom's happy and hugging me time.
I had just read the book when I decided to teach my then 9 mon old her colors. I applied the basic colors from colored paper to the size poster cards they recommend and "flashed" them to our baby three times a day for a few days and VOILA, she knew her colors. I would ask her to pick up the yellow block or bring mom the blue ball and she would correctly identify the colored item the great majority of the time. The book doesn't talk about using the method to specifically teach colors, but I was honestly a bit skeptical about the reality of their methodology, so I applied it to our lives in our way.
I feel as if their is nothing they can't learn. My goal for this summer is to teach the fifty states. I had started with a few that our relatives live in and immediately my then 3 yr old started picking up info from newscasts and children's books and connecting it to what I had taught her. "Mom they are talking about Massachusetts. Isn't that way up north where Grandma lives." She then went on to remind me of the state bird and tree (which I cannot remember). What was so exciting was that SHE was so excited to be able to learn additionally info. in a meaningful way because she had something to connect it to.
I had difficulty finding three times a day when all three of us were awake, up and in a good mood. Also, sometimes my four year old would just not want to play. We have put the cards away for weeks at a time, esp when sick etc. And it takes some organization. A copier would be of benefit also. But remember, if you can read this book with an open mind and not get bogged down with the multitude of info it talks about teaching your children, then it can be a wonderful tool to use in teaching them whatever you want. Children are happy to learn new things, be it about saints, leaves, food or clouds. Let them learn and have fun too!
BEWARE!.......1999-11-13
Doman's techniques may work to some extent, but his view on what constitutes "knowledge" is rubbish. Like many simpletons, Doman believes trivia is true knowledge. "Bit of intelligence" is his label for a piece of trivia, implying that the human being who has memorized the most trivia has accumulated the most intelligence. If you want your child to be a Jeopardy contestant, read this book immediately. If you want your child to be a thinker, don't waste your time and money. Albert Einstein, one of the greatest thinkers of all time, despised trivia. Do you want your child to be an Einstein or a Trabek?
It is about improving your child's opportunities in life........1999-09-21
5Starts is not enough, when it comes to improving our children, there is not enough stars in heaven to rate this book. I encourage you to not be like "The Mother from Hell" look beyond her comments. It is clear that she ABSOLUTELY did not understand the methodology or the philosophy behind it, as she clearly labels it a memorization exercise. On the service the whole program looks like nothing but memorization. However if you understand the philosophy you understand that it is all about Quality repetitive stimulation, not memorization. The philosophy is simple and we have heard it a million times, The brain is like a muscle the more you exercise (stimulate) it the more it develops. There is one important difference however, the development of the brain is some what inversely proportional to ones age. The youngest mind (Infant mind) responds (develops) the best to stimulation. There is one other major point we need to understand. There is a difference between learning and developing the brain. Developing the brain is the establishment of the neuron connection in the brain in to the different areas of the brain, this is how your increase your IQ. Learning is the activity of studying a subject, and internalizing it, this is how you increase your wisdom/knowledge.
We all understand to become a professional athlete, we need to develop the capability of the muscles to perform the work and we need to learn the skill to perform the work. We also understand there is no way to separate the two different development areas. That is as a beginner to any sport you have to and do develop both the skill and the ability at the same time as you participate. The whole point Glenn and Janet Doman are making is one that any good coach understands, the most effective way to increase the rate of development and potential of ability is to engage in quality repetitive stimulation.
My degree is in Education, and I am a student of life and how we, and why we learn, Glenn and Janet have written several books that clearly explain why and how to increase your child's potential. The philosophy is sound and the methods are well proven. There is but one thing to consider, are you willing to develop children that are smarter then your self and give them a real chance to excel. If so read the books, understand the philosophy and consistently employee the methods. Your children will be greatly rewarded!!
Will turn you into a "Mom from hell".......1999-07-19
Gimme a break! Memorizing is the easiest thing for children to do. Being able to mouth off thousands of information does not make one a better or more intelligent person. Kids need to learn how to analyze, interpret, solve problems, and think critically and creatively. In this age of information explosion, such "encyclopedic knowledge" is less relevant than before. Any information today can easily become obsolete tomorrow. Kids need to learn values, to become human. I bought this book and it almost turned me into a "Mom from hell". I'm glad I changed my mind about it and decided to trust my child and be more relaxed about her development. My goal is for her to become an enthusiastic, lifelong learner - not a computer databank.

A little techical for nonmusicians after the second half.......2004-05-29
Tucker is an outstanding researcher and this book adds a great deal of valuable information to Duke Ellington's early years. He provides a solid context for Duke Ellington's development in the Washington music scene. You can see how Duke soaked up neighborhood piano, ragime, and ensemble influences as he evolved from musical entrepreneur to fledgling composer. This early section added a lot of well-researched info to my knowledge of Ellington.
As the scene shifts to New York, the emphasis on personality, character, and context shifts and Tucker shifts largely to extremely detailed musical analysis of Ellington's early records. Here he betrays that this book is primarily intended for an academic audience of fellow Ellington and hardcore jazz scholars. Without keyboard skills the numerous musical examples weren't as beneficial to me, although I am sure that piano players and arrangers would find this section quite helpful. I imagine he does a useful job of counteracting many interpretations of Duke's life that there is little musical value to his pre-Cotton club work, but I already had a sense that Bubber Miley and Joe Nanton made valuable solo and compositional contributions on tunes like "Black and Tan Fantasy", "Creole Love Call", and "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" before reading this work. I did gain from how Tucker's wealth of knowledge allowed him to compare how these works compared to solos and other compositions of the period. I did not realize how influential King Oliver's stuff was on Ellington through the ideas of his soloists.
I wanted more stories of what it was like for the band in New York than I got here, but it was still a very informative read nonetheless.
I rate this book 3.5 stars for non academics, probably 4.5 stars for those who can easily comprehend the musical examples. Also a listener who is greatly attracted to music like the Okeh Ellington would probably find this a nice companion for a couple of the earlier tunes on that set.
3.5 stars

Book Description
Yehudit Ilan, author of Their Image Will Be Forever Before My Eyes, was just seven years old when the Germans occupied Holland in 1940. She lived, together with her family, in the same neighborhood of Amsterdam as Anne Frank. Whereas Anne Frank went into hiding, and met a tragic end in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Yehudit Ilan, also imprisoned at Bergen-Belsen, somehow survived, and has recorded her vivid impressions of those terrible days in her gripping memoirs.
From pre-war Amsterdam, where the Jewish community thrived, to the darkest days of the war, in 1943, when Yehudit and her family were transported to Westerbork, and then to Bergen-Belsen, to Yehudit's grueling journey home after the German defeat, to her new life in the fledgling State of Israel, where Yehudit met her husband and raised her family - these memoirs are both Yehudit's personal story, and also a legacy to the millions who did not survive the brutal Nazi regime.
As a teacher herself, Yehudit Ilan appreciates well the importance of remembering the Holocaust. As she writes, in Their Image Will Be Forever Before My Eyes, "Even though, from an historical point of view, the main purpose of telling about the Holocaust should be to describe the whole picture, it is well known that this is and will be impossible forever, since the human mind is not capable of comprehending such an enormity of sorrow and suffering. However, it is possible to identify with the grief and suffering of one individual. Through this process, an understanding of the unprecedented tragedy of an entire people will be achieved."
Following the publication of the first edition of her memoirs, Yehudit Ilan has frequently been asked to relate her tragic experiences in war-torn Europe. Her history, so eloquently and lucidly told in Their Image Will Be Forever Before My Eyes, is a significant contribution to the memory of the Holocaust, and an important insight into the ways in which children in particular coped in such grave and desperate circumstances.
