Outstanding autobiography of a Delaware (and global) hero.......1999-06-11

As a native Delawarian born in the early 70s, I am not old enough to remember Governor Peterson's term of office, but I am thankful for the legacy he has left our State. His book is an excellent account of his ability to enter the corporate and political arena and remain true to his cause. Whenever I drive north from beautiful Lower Delaware on Rt 13, it's readily apparent when I pass the disgusting oil refineries, landfills, and chemical factories of New Castle County that his diligence in the early 70s held the line against further industrial development and destruction of the Delaware coast. Hopefully, his efforts to revamp the downtrodden waterfront of our largest city, Wilmington, will meet with the same success as his other endeavors. If you want to read about what a politician, a citizen, and a human being should strive to be then read this book. The accompanying CD ROM is also interesting, informative, and very well conceived.

Better Than a Visit to the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta.......2003-08-05

The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola will delight all those who would like to know the origins of the world's favorite soft drink and see many delightful early examples of advertising and promotional materials. One of my favorite museums with a commercial focus is the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta. I was prepared to be disappointed with this book, assuming that it would have less material that I found at the museum. Instead, I found The Sparking Story of Coca-Cola to be much more detailed, easier to follow and with higher quality graphics than in the museum.

The people who will be disappointed in this book are those who want to follow Coca-Cola's progress in detail from 1935 on. The book is a little sketchy for the last 68 years, but wonderfully detailed before that.

The historical side of the book captures the development of carbonated soft drinks in drug stores from medicinal mineral waters and then connects how the formula for Coca-Cola emerged. Anyone who has wanted to understand about the cocaine and caffeine in the original formula will probably have their thirst for knowledge slaked. There also plenty of educated guesses about what the rest of the ingredients are now.

The book goes on to explain the transition into distributing the syrup around the country, bottling and supermarket distribution. I found all of these explanations to be thorough, without being dense, and interesting without trying to be cute.

The illustrations are what really made the book for me. In Coca-Cola's earliest days, the company was a pioneer in mass advertising. Although a fountain glass of Coca-Cola only cost five cents, that was a lot of money when the product first came out. With a sure instinct, the advertising portrayed attractive, healthy upper class young women with the product. These images appeared on trays, calendars and hand-outs. The quality of the reproductions is very fine. You can then see how these illustrations gravitated towards women celebrities and eventually towards ordinary looking young women. During times of trouble, boys were included.

I also enjoyed the discussions of how Coca-Cola handled the challenges of sugar shortages and the Depression while maintaining its quality image and integrity.
While many books about a product like Coca-Cola would ignore all competitors, this one has some material on the early soft drink makers like Hires for root beer and Schweppes. There's also some material on the challenge of Pepsi-Cola beginning in the 1930s. These references enriched the book for me.

Those who are looking for an explanation of the Roberto Goizueta era at Coca-Cola will find little information, except for a discussion of the introduction of the failed new Coke. Bottling development and international expansion similarly lack much information beyond the initiation of both activities.

So, as you can see, this is more than a coffee table book . . . and less than a complete history. It's just right for those who want to know more about one of their favorite beverages and enjoy the nostalgia of seeing interesting memorabilia from an earlier time.

After you finish this book, think about other symbols that you relate to that once had a slightly "fast" image. Is that same image involved now? Is the change good or bad from your perspective?

When you are in Atlanta, all those who enjoyed this book will probably also enjoy the museum there . . . especially tasting the flavors of Coca-Cola products from around the world.

I recieved this wonderful book as a Christmas gift. What an enjoyable read! Full of enjoyable tidbits that every Cokeaholic would love to know. From the history of Soda Fountain beginnings to the pop culture icon Coca-Cola has become. The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola covers it all. A visual feast of historic photographs and illustrations accompany the well written text.

Pretty, but misleading.......2006-03-17

I bought this after looking at the description and reviews on the website, but had no clue that it is essentially a date book with pictures of textile arts and very short passages (generally 2-4 lines) about making things scattered throughout. I was expecting something more along the lines of essays, or longer daily chunks - a book rather than a non-year-specific calendar. I have no need for a date book, so this will be going back to amazon.

Women I know are creative in all sorts of ways. This book is for all of them. And it's just in time for Christmas, so I had to buy about 15 of them.

Two of my favorite quotes found therein: "Creativity is using the resources you best understand to make something positive happen. This isn't just about the arts. It's about business, medicine, leadership, housekeeping, world politics, or a Sunday potluck dinner." And, "The opposite of war is not peace. It is making things." Bravo Janet. When does the 2006 version come out?

This is a great book for anyone looking for creative inspiration. This should not be confused with a craft how-to book. Textile arts in this case support the bigger emphasis on the importance of "making things"... any "things!"

Although Mississippi's antebellum architecture has received wide attention, its late nineteenth-century architectural legacy often goes unrecognized. In 187 full-color photographs Victorian Houses of Mississippi showcases a selection of 143 significant and well-preserved houses that exemplify Victorian tastes in residential design. Close-ups of some of the homes reveal the high level of craftsmanship that went into their design and construction along with such specific details as beautiful spindlework, elaborate gable ornamentation, and striking dormers. Equally impressive are the gorgeous pastel colors that many of the homes still feature.

Architectural historian Richard J. Cawthon summarizes the history of Mississippi's late Victorian residential architecture. Most of the book, however, is devoted to Sherry Pace's photographs of a wide variety of Victorian houses located throughout the state along with brief descriptive captions by Cawthon. Many of the houses depicted exemplify the Italianate style, which was popular from before the Civil War into the 1880s. A larger number illustrate the Queen Anne style, which surpassed the Italianate style in popularity by the 1890s. There are also examples of Gothic Revival, the Second Empire, and the Shingle Style. Many of Mississippi's major towns and cities are represented, and all of the homes in Victorian Houses of Mississippi are documented by the Historic Preservation Division of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

This book makes it easy to watch your carbohydrates!.......2004-12-30

I am watching my carbohydrates to lose weight. My husband counts carbs because of his diabetes. I've been looking for recipe ideas and this book is filled with great things to eat. Every recipe I've tried is easy to make and they don't taste like 'diet' food.

The recipes all have the carbohydrate grams listed. We especially liked 'Peppery Beef Roast with Gravy' (only 3 grams of carb) and 'No Bake Peanut Butter Cookies' (also low in carb). The 1800 calorie menus were helpful too.

As I'm sitting here writing this review I'm sipping a delicious beverage that cannot stop drinking. Absolutely fabulous stuff! Made from roasted soya that you brew like coffee. My doctor said my cholesterol dropped 30 points thanks to this. Look for it online at www.s oycoffee.com. As for the book, it's pure pleasure reading. I've recommended this book to several friends!

Accurate Carbohydrate Information.......2003-04-22

As authors of the "Carbohydrate Counting Cookbook" we would like to assure potential purchasers about the accuracy of the carbohydrate content information for the recipes in our book. While we are not certain which carbohydrate counter Ms. Robichaud used for her assumptions about the recipes in the book, readers should know that each recipe has been computer analyzed using the most currently available USDA food and nutrient data. In addition, the recipes were reviewed for accuracy by a panel of registered dietitians/certified diabetes educators prior to publication. Individuals with diabetes can rest assured that the nurient information in the "Carbohydrate Counting Cookbook" is accurate and timely. It IS possible for healthy food to taste great!

Low Carbohydrate? I don't think so!.......2003-04-18

I am a diabetic and a nurse, as I started reviewing this cookbook ( I love to cook and work very hard at finding low carb recipes) and with my working knowledge of carbohydrates began to question the reported carbohydrate values of these recipes. Indeed, as I started counting up the carbohydrates with a counter, I found that the results that I came up with were much higher than theirs! I even took the fiber count into consideration. I feel that this cookbook is very misleading and if you do not test your blood sugars after trying a recipe, you may end up with a higher than expected BSL. I feel that this is false ifnormation and am very disturbed by it. Please test a recipe for the carb counts for yourself! No wonder the recipes are tasty! Remember, if it tastes "too good to be true", it probably has more carbs in it than being claimed! I am truly disappointed!

A great No-Nonsense approach to managing my diabetes!.......2000-12-30

As someone who has lived with diabetes my entire life, I have constantly struggled with finding a simple and straight-forward way to control my blood sugars. This book gave me an easy way to better manage this disease. It gives alot of helpful hints and ideas that keep me wanting to succeed in my fight. Thanks to the authors for writing such a life-changing book.

I found this book to be very helpful and practical! It helped me understand which foods contain carbohdyrate and how to count the carbohydrates that I eat. The recipes that I've tried have been simple to prepare and tasty! I especially like the unique index which lists all the recipes by how much carbohydrate they contain. The sample menus gave me ideas on how to plan meals. If you are counting carbs - look no further! This is a great book!
