Book Description
The half century covered by Raoul Bossy's diaries and memoirs was one of major upheaval in the world, particularly in Eastern Europe. A keen and witty observer, Bossy faithfully recorded the reactions of informed people to the then unfolding international events. His recollections begin in 1918, when Bossy entered the Romanian diplomatic service as a lowly attaché and began his climb through the ranks: cabinet chief of the minister of foreign affairs to political director of the prime minister's office to secretary-general of the Romanian regency. By the early 1940s he achieved what was at that time the most important posting for a Romanian diplomat—envoy to Berlin. Because of his intelligence and political acumen, Bossy was chosen early in his career to work closely with outstanding statesmen, allowing him to witness policymaking at firsthand and to establish long-lasting friendships with major players. As envoy to Hungary, Bossy had a front row seat from which to observe Hitler's annihilation of Austria and of Czechoslovakia. Within a year of the war's outbreak, the United Kingdom was left alone to face Germany, and the guarantees it had given Romania became useless. In mid-1940, with German agreement, the Soviet Union annexed Bessarabia and northern Bukovina. Two months later the Vienna Diktat gave Hungary a large chunk of Transylvania, with more Romanian inhabitants than Hungarians. This national calamity inevitably led to a major political upheaval. Carol II fled Romania and General Antonescu came to power, ultimately establishing a pro-German, full-fledged military dictatorship. Without even being consulted, Bossy—a diplomat with well-known pro-Allied sympathies—was appointed envoy to Berlin. He resisted as much as he could, accepting with "the greatest reluctance" the appointment to "the regime in Germany [which] fills me with revulsion." For almost two years Bossy did his best to defend Romania's interests in Berlin but to no avail. He tendered his resignation five times before it was finally, and reluctantly, accepted in early 1943. He then took refuge with his family in Switzerland and worked closely with the International Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations to reduce the sufferings of prisoners of war and of refugees. Bossy died in 1975.

I use this book in teaching a Bankruptcy class to California paralegal students. It is an excellent introduction to the bankruptcy system, and includes discussions of both consumer and business bankruptcies (with a definite emphasis on the consumer side). I expecially appreciate the thorough treatment of the BAPA (laws that changed in October 2005).

I bought this "book" only to discover that it is actually 57 pages of nothing more than a sales pitch. It is described as being 113 pages, but I wouldn't count a picture on every other page as actual content!
The author is not an attorney, in fact she does not even have an associates degree and she is not a paralegal. She only began completing bankruptcy petitions in 2006!! My strong advice is to not waste your money on this "book".

Lee Roy specializes in the older fancier patterns and is a recognized authority on all of the grape patterns. Although this book sounded great, it was very disappointing...A very expensive book for the little knowledge in it...Lots of pages, but little information....Has many manufacturer's advertisement pictures and pages and pages of the same pattern, but not very helpful as far as identification!!! Very limited manufacturers and patterns...I wouldn't waste my time or money on purchasing this particular book, even for the novice it covers very little, unless you just like looking at pictures...
It's pretty okay.......2000-12-15
This book has lots of nice pictures and drawings that show good detail of the different patterns. There are lots of patterns to choose from including some that are very old. The only problem is that it doesn't really have a good variety of brands. Also, it took me a while to figure out where the values are. Once I figured that out, I got real tired of flipping back to the front cover over and over to see what my pieces were worth. However, if you've got the right brands this could be the perfect book for you!

If you have an old set of silverplate or odd pieces, especially older ornate pieces of flatware,this is a good guide, well illustrated, with many reproductions of original catalogs. I found pattern names of several odd serving pieces which led to a search for matching place settings.

There are so many good photos, line drawings, and catalog pages. It is organized by manufacturers name,and then sub catgorized alphabetically by pattern name. No need for a contents page when you are trying to identify a piece you have.Look up your pattern by what the backstamp says on it.There are all the top collectible patterns in this book and the lesser quality patterns were left out that are of little demand. The orignal catalog pages are very informative and show the original prices for the silver. A must for the dealer, and dealer wanna-be.

Interesting, but not a keeper.......2003-04-21
If you are looking for Stack-n-Whack, this book contains only a couple of examples - the rest of the quilts are 8-pointed stars made by cutting the background squares and triangles in half so you don't have to do set-in "Y" seams. I tried piecing a star this way, and the piecing is a little easier, but it is not that hard to do the set-in seams and I don't like seeing the seams in what should be solid pieces of fabric. I'm a big fan of Bethany's Stack-N-Whack books but was a bit disappointed in this one.

NOT TO BE MISSED!
A Great Tale Spoiled in the Retelling.......2005-04-30
I purchased this book after seeing a television documentary on Monsieur de Saint-George, and was fascinated by his life and achievements (and eager to hear more of his music).
Unfortunately, though the his life is fascinating and takes many turns, the quality of the storytelling here is not up to the task. As anyone who has read academic research will know, a remarkable topic can quickly be drowned out by droning prose.
Having said that, I felt at every point eager to hear the next twist or turn of this man's life. Perhaps someone will do him better service.
PS - Suggest if you decide to proceed with this book, that you purchase the music to listen to as you read. Perhaps it will improve the whole experience, and will definitely give you better insight into his achievements.
An enthralling life story.......2004-04-05
Monsieur De Saint-George: Virtuoso, Swordsman, Revolutionary is the amazing biography of Joseph Boulogne de Saint-George, the son of a slave mother and a gentleman father and the trail he blazed through eighteenth-century aristocratic circles to become one of the greatest of the French composers. Also known for his talented violin playing, his superb swordsmanship, and his passionate hope for a future that would promote equal rights for human beings regardless of color. An enthralling life story which was definitely researched and superbly written by biographer Alain Guede, Monsieur De Saint-George is a quite significant contribution to Black Studies and Music History collections.
This is not a Biography.......2004-02-15
Mr. Guede's book is about a wonderful charactor, but the scholarship is poor. He uses footnotes, but they are to other works of fiction. He spends much time talking about the family of St.-Georges' father, without checking the very clear and obtainable documents that prove he is another man entirely. This is important because St.-Georges made his way in Parisian society on his own, not as son of a wealthy minister. Gede says he was called "Chevalier" by his father, when his apointment by Louis XV to the Gendarme du Roi made him a Chevalier automatically. It was an honor he earned.
It takes nerve to write a biography of a musician without even an elemental knowledge of music. For example the author writes: "Gossec named him (St.-Georges) first violin and time keeper. What is the conductor suposed to be doing?
Finally, the author inserts gratuitous racial remarks such as: "the thick layers of powder he used to hide the color of his skin", or Plato, his (fictional) violin teacher saying "Follow the score or you will always play like a Negro", or "Voltaire would not defend a Negro unless he was attacked by a Jew"
St.-Georges deserves a better writer.
