    Book Description

    By endurance we conquer

Eighty years after Ernest Shackleton's death, his legend and the extraordinary story of the Endurance South Pole expedition still hold a grip on the public imagination.

Trapped in drifting polar pack-ice for ten months, Ernest Shackleton and his crew fought for survival against all the odds. When the Endurance was finally crushed, they were stranded on ice floes for more than a year before reaching Elephant Island. From there Shackleton and five of his men embarked on the most remarkable rescue mission in maritime history, sailing in a small open boat to South Georgia Island across eight hundred miles of the world's roughest seas to bring help to the others.

Though he failed to reach the South Pole, Shackleton's story lives on because of his unique qualities of leadership and the extraordinary fact that all of his men survived. This compelling narrative probes the profound influence of Shackleton's Irish and Quaker roots in the making of a great leader. It offers a vivid portrait of a man at odds with the world and with himself, whose ambition was tempered by his flawed humanity and egalitarianism. Here too are the untold stories of Shackleton's upbringing in Kildare, his time in the Merchant Navy, his 1901 voyage on the Discovery with Robert Falcon Scott, his 1907 Nimrod expedition, his marriage and love affairs, his life as a public figure and politician, and the haunting story of his final, fatal expedition on the Quest.

Drawing on family records, diaries, and letters-and hitherto unpublished photographs and archive material-this mesmerizing book takes us beyond the myth to Shackleton the man, for whom "optimism is true moral courage," and whose greatest triumph was that of life over death.

Shackleton: An Irishman in Antarctica is lavishly illustrated with more than a hundred photographs, maps, and engravings, some of them appearing in print for the first time.

If Shackelton made it across the antartic as planned he probably would not be as well-known as he is today. The feat he and his crew managed to pull is simply astounding. One of the most inspiring adventure stories of all time in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A profound, inspirational, and keenly engaging story.......2003-06-10

The collective effort of Jonathon Shackleton (Antarctic special and a cousin of the famed explorer) and biographer John Mackenna, Shackleton: An Irishman In Antarctica is an informed and informative portrayal of Ernest Shackleton's historic, dramatic, highly dangerous South Pole expedition. Even though the voyage's ultimately failed to achieve it's stated goal, and Shackleton's crew were stranded on ice floes, all hands worked together to survive for a year before the perilous return to civilization could be made. Not a single man died in Shackleton's expedition, a credit to Shackleton's leadership and determination. His is a profound, inspirational, and keenly engaging story which is very highly recommended reading.

      Book Description

In this fresh examination of the Microsoft antitrust case, Richard Gordon critically examines the economics of the US government's arguments. The conclusion is that the government presented a sketchy, incoherent, invalid economic case and relied upon creating the impression of misdeeds to persuade the courts. The primary charge is that Microsoft possessed an impregnable monopoly in operating systems for personal computers. According to the government, Microsoft created, included in its operating system, and vigorously promoted its internet browser solely to prevent the development of the Java/Netscape alternative. The promotion of this browser was considered predatory. Microsoft allegedly undertook similar acts against other companies. According to Gordon, the government failed to present even a clear statement of its charges and failed to substantiate the critical allegations. In this book, he concentrates on the underlying economics of the case and reviews the germane theory. He presents and evaluates implicit government arguments as well as Microsoft's refutations.

Readers in economics, law and public policy will find this well researched analysis enlightening.

I actually borrowed this book from my local library. I was interested to see why the author claimed an unfair trial on Microsoft. I am not a fan of Microsoft or its monopoly practices but I wanted to be fair and undertand if there had been really government abuse in their trial.

It all started ok with the author giving facts and citing everything which in many cases made me side with Microsoft but after a while (chapter 4 and beyond) it is clear to see he looses his objective and neutral vision and starts expressing his own opinions on how MS technologies are superior. He acusses the government of not giving evidence on many claims brought upon MS and I agree with him but he is guilty of the same when he claims that MS's IE is superior but does not provide any proof of it.

When it comes to economic theory and antitrust I think Mr. Gordon is very knowledgeable but I also think he is too blinded by theory to clearly see the reality in MS case...

And finally, when it comes to technological matters I don't think Mr. Gordon has a clue about computers. Throughout chapters 7,8 and 9 he proves to be a regular Microsoft tied user which makes it obvious as to why he defends every MS product and acusses almost all of the government allegationsselling...

        Book Description

No antitrust case in recent history has attracted as much public attention as U.S v. Microsoft Corp. Nor has any antitrust case in memory raised as many complex, substantive issues of law, economics and public policy. Microsoft, Antitrust and the New Economy: Selected Essays constitutes an early effort to analyze some of the central issues and to put the case in the context of the ongoing debate over the role of government in managing markets - especially in technology driven New Economy industries.
All of these essays, it should be noted, are written by critics of the government's efforts to regulate Microsoft. Indeed, many are by individuals who were closely involved in the company's legal defense and served as consultants to Microsoft. But their work should be judged on the merits rather than their provenance. For all represent serious scholarship by researchers committed to advancing the debate over government regulatory policies.

4 out of 5 stars Instruction & Inspiration on Advanced Needlepoint Techniques.......2007-05-18

For people who have watched her Needlearts show on PBS, Shay and her wonderful way with all forms of needlework needs no introduction. For those who haven't let's just say that Shay is one of the nicest and most innovative needleworkers around.

This beautiful book distills much of Shay's wisdom covering Goldwork, painted canvas and shading. Each section is lavishly illustrated with detailed explanations of techniques. I'm not very familiar with Goldwork, stil I found Shay's explanations clear enough so that I would feel confident tackling a beginner's project. There is a charming one, a dove, in the book.

The section on painted canvas has a good overview of threads and
techniques. It includes detailed instructions on techniques which
often aren't covered, stripped threads, using a laying tool, and
properly starting and ending threads. A wonderful part of this
section talks about choosing the right canvas. Further information
covers how to change colors on a painted canvas as well as several
          techniques for optically mixing colors.

Following this chapter about painted canvas is a chapter which goes
into depth discussing how three different painted canvas Christmas
stockings were stitched. Several pages are devoted to each canvas
with a picture of the entire canvas as well as close-up pictures of
the details. Even if these three Tapestry Tent designs aren't your
cup of tea, you will find many ideas for using on your own canvases.

The section on shading covers two different techniques to create
realistic shading. While the techniques were developed for surface
embroidery, a part of this section shows how they can be applied to
canvas. In fact, the shaded canvas piece is photographed on the
          cover of the book.

The book ends with a gallery of designs. Each of the pieces in the
gallery shows Shay's consummate skill as a designer and stitcher.
They provide much food for inspiration.

While this book is not a book for beginners. Every stitcher will
learn useful information and find plenty of inspiration in this
          wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Most Beautiful Book in My [very large] Collection.......2005-09-12

This is "the" book for the serious needleworker. It has the most comprehensive technique instructions of any book, ever, for gold work, painted canvas, and shading; it isn't a cutesy book of simple projects. The illustrations are excellent. The color photos are to die for: closeups of step-by-step work in progress and examples of finished work will enable you to strive for excellence in your own work. This is a teaching book with important information about threads, fabrics, frames, tools, framing up, tips ... the list goes on and on. I can't recommend this book any higher.

          2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-11-06

This book does offer insight into shading and goldwork techniques, but has few, if any, practice projects. The pictures are very lovely, but I was led to believe that there would be more patterns to practice on.

If you are looking for a book with projects, minimally practice projects, this book is not the one to buy. No projects, thus no materials and fibers listed, no patterns.

As a non professional needlework enthusiast, I need a head start on any project, because I don't have time to design a project from start to finish; books with projects offer the headstart I think most people in my position need: the hard work is done (which is why we pay for the book) and it is left to the individual needlework enthusiast to tweek it here and there to fit his or her decor/color favorites/personalization, etc. This book does not save any time or give any headstart to any project, which is the reason people pay money to the professional needleworker for their efforts. These efforts have not been made in this book.

I would say a person looking for a book in goldwork or embroidery (shading, with silk or wool) would be much better off buying "A Victorian Floral Alphabet" "Redoutes Finest Flowers in Embroidery"; "The Art of Painting with a Needle"; these books make beautiful, individualized embroidery projects a possibility for those of us who don't have the time to start from scratch.

This book is the equivalent to buying a pair of stamped pillow cases or a tablecloth to embroider, but when you get the pillowcases or tablecloth, they are blank, there is no design stamped on them, and the manufacturer includes instructions on how to embroider them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Volume.......2004-06-04

For the serious needleworker, Shay Pendray's Inventive Needlework is a must-have book. Included are discussions on materials and on techniques, clearly drawn diagrams, and excellent color photographs. Examples of various techniques are drawn from both the author's own teaching pieces and from other pieces which have been exhibited at ANG National Seminars. I was particularly excited by the close-up photographs, which show stitching details clearly. (Many of the goldwork photographs were stitched on a black ground) Note that this book is about techniques, and is not a catalog of diagrams for specific stitches - there are many other reference books which fill that purpose.

For needleworkers who are interested in advancing their skills, or who have wished for opportunities to examine advanced-level stitching in detail, the excellent photographs and elaborating text of this book offer a great deal of inspiration.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-09-07

I got this book for my daughter after she learned a little balloon making in camp. She loves it and is able to make the shapes with no adult help. There are some very cute balloon ideas in this book. My daughter says, "I'm nine years old and I think if you know a few twists, you'll love it. Most things are easy to make and a lot of fun if you like doing balloons. I hope you try it."

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but entertaining.......2004-07-10

If you are in need of new jokes to crack while you create balloon shapes, this is a nice resource. If you want to create recognizable balloon animals, you will find better instructions in other balloon books.

The black and white illustrations show the infated balloon with all the bubbles you will need for the shape. The connections between bubbles are indicated by arrows, but the size of each bubble isn't always mentioned in the text and is never indicated on the illustration. The finished product is shown, complete with the faces you'll need to add to the shapes to make them distinguishable.

This book does contain a wider variety of balloon animals and shapes than other books I've used. It covers basic and advanced animals as well as balloon hats and games.

Overall, it is a good visual reference for possible balloon creations, but other balloon books are better for actual instructions on how to make each shape. Perhaps this book will inspire creativity in people who have already mastered and become bored with the basics.

My last comment refers to the paperback edition of this book. It is a challenge to keep the book open to the correct page while using both hands to make your balloon creations! I recommend finding a spiral bound book so it will stay open while you work.

          Book Description

These new titles in the Building Blocks series showcase four more icons of modern architecture, as portrayed by renowned architectural photographer Ezra Stoller. Two buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater and Taliesin West, Louis Kahn's Salk Institute, and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building are shown in original condition, with original furnishings, as the architects intended them to be seen. Wright's integration of architecture and landscape, Kahn's dramatic yet humane monumentality, and Mies's austere elegance are revealed and preserved in Stoller's classic compositions. Small, elegant, and affordable, each volume presents the photo-graphs that made these structures famous. With 60 rich duotone plates (and 16 color plates for Taliesin West), a brief introduction, and newly drawn plans, sections, and elevations, these books constitute the essential photographic histories of the most important works of modernism.

            Book Description

One of today's leading composers reflects on the relationship of music to the spiritual dilemmas of our time

In the 1960s, John Tavener's music appeared on the Beatles' Apple label. "The Protecting Veil"--one of the bestselling classical recordings of all time--made him a household name in the eighties, and his "Song for Athene" was heard worldwide when it was played at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

Yet behind this enormous success is a spiritual dimension, which became explicit after Tavener was received into the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977. With his wide intellectual curiosity and searching musical imagination it comes as no surprise that he possesses a profound and far-reaching musical "philosophy." The Music of Silence gives voice to this philosophy. Based on extensive conversations between the composer and his longtime friend Brian Keeble, it covers his early influences, his attitude and often controversial reactions to the music of his contemporaries, the sacred and religious underpinnings of his faith, as well as the technical aspects of composition.

To the satisfaction of some observers and the astonishment of others, John Tavener has become one of the most popular and successful classical composers alive today. The marvelously simple and consoling "Song for Athene," which was sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales (and which nearly stole the show from "Candle in the Wind"), isn't the only instance. Tavener's 1987 cello concerto The Protecting Veil, for example, drew more large-scale audience interest and genuine excitement, especially in Britain, than had any new cello concerto for decades; the composer's a cappella choral works are sung in church services and concert halls all over the world. Many concertgoers and record buyers seem attracted to and even grateful for the simplicity and spirituality of much of Tavener's music. Others--and not only professional critics--find some characteristics of his music, and his persona, off-putting and even stupefying. Much of Tavener's writing is deliberately repetitive: "I hate progress, I hate development, and I hate evolution in most things; but in music particularly," he says. His public utterances are often unnecessarily inflammatory (such as suggesting that all opera houses and concert halls should be destroyed and that Western culture is dead and rotting). His spirituality and belief in Eastern Orthodoxy often appear ostentatious. (How many times has the man posed for photographs surrounded by ikons and candles?)

The Music of Silence: A Composer's Testament has been assembled and edited by Brian Keeble from extensive interviews with Tavener at his Greek-island home. The second half of the book, which is largely in interview format, should be quite valuable for those who are moved by his music or just want to understand what the composer is up to. Tavener's explanations of his concept of his music as "ikons in sound," the crucial differences he sees between the Christianity of the Orthodox East and the Latin West, and his goals in writing particular works such as Mary of Egypt and Fall and Resurrection are enlightening and often fascinating.

But the first half of the book is insufferable. "In Retrospect" purports to review Tavener's life and compositional career more or less chronologically. Not only are both the prose and the material disjointed, rambling, and repetitive (for which Keeble shares blame) but overbearing self-regard and spiritual pretentiousness seem to ooze from every page like "liquid metaphysics" (a term Tavener uses to describe his music). It is, frankly, off-putting and stupefying. This reader alternated between bemused annoyance and an intense desire to see the composer parodied by a comic actor (as when he writes, "I had a vision in the bath one day").

One can't help wishing the composer would emulate his spiritual adviser and sometime librettist, the down-to-earth, no-nonsense Mother Thekla. He quotes her instructing him on how to approach Akathist of Thanksgiving: "Just get on with it, dear." May John Tavener take that advice well and truly to heart. --Matthew Westphal

4 out of 5 stars straightforward insights into the composer's intent.......2001-02-19

I found this collection of interviews with the composer John Tavener and the editor, Brian Keeble, to be quite interesting and often amusing. Mr. Taverner is not shy in expressing his great distaste for other "modern" composers who came before him(particularly Olivier Messaien.) The book is helpful for the perspective it gives the reader in understanding the process of composing music. Moreover, it shows us that for Tavener, music is not just for listening, it is a way of serving God. His devotion to the Orthodox Church has served to bring its centuries-old musical/vocal tradition to a broader audience, including those of us who are not familiar with the tenets of that Church. His music is not just for Christians or Orthodox believers; it is a music for people of all beliefs. The solemnity and emotion of the human spirit come through in every one of his works.

5 out of 5 stars John Tavener- in his own words at last.......2000-04-27

John Tavener has certainly been one of the greatest inspirations in my life, and in this book it is finally possible to glimpse into the inner workings of his mind. His narrative reveals much of his personality, which is something completely apart from the public "image" that has often been thrust upon him. What is so striking is his honesty; although, like his beloved Stravinsky, he sometimes contradicts himself without knowing it, Tavener takes the plunge that is always difficult for autobiographers: he admits to a discomfort with his past and is willing to account for some embarrassing mistakes in his musical career. It does chafe just a little that he keeps referring to "Fall and Resurrection" (which he had just completed at the time of writing), but that notwithstanding, he engages the reader with his tales, opinions and feelings as much as he engages the faithful listener with his compositions. (And on a personal note, having met him and sung his music to him, I find it very hard not to hear his voice as I read the words...)

The book also contains several interview sections conducted by the editor Brian Keeble. These, it is explained in the preface, are recordings of spontaneous discussion as opposed to carefully planned dialogue, and to encounter Tavener in conversation is nearly as fascinating as reading his own prose. At long last, we can see what makes him tick, how he feels about his life and work, and what his hopes for the future are.

Even if you already have the Geoffrey Haydon book "Glimpses of Paradise," you should consider getting this- it sheds new light on the story of a truly unique composer and does indeed offer a message of hope for the next millennium. Outstanding!
