Pete Goss was born to be close to the wind. Although Goss admits in this autobiography that he had rather weak goals growing up, it is clear that Goss is one of those persons born to be before the mast. Even his nine year stint in the Royal Marines was that of a compleat sailor as his military career focused on representing his Service in a series of transatlantic and other competitions. It all seems too serendipitous, at least until the reader realizes that Goss's life is one where his ambition and his circumstances happily coincide in an almost preordained fashion.
Perhaps that is why Goss's constant (realistic) financial concerns and searches for sponsorship grate so badly upon the reader. His money worries are a consistent theme in CLOSE TO THE WIND. And it is true that had Goss not pressed himself to continually move forward he probably would have been broke and unable to pursue his dreams. To me, Goss is not the bigger hero in this book, but rather his wife Tracey, who never seemed to flag in her devotion either to Pete or to his dreams.
The ultimate dream was to compete in the 1996-97 Vendee Globe, a single-handed circumnavigation across the Southern Ocean. For the Vendee, Pete Goss commissioned the building of "Aqua Quorum" a revolutionary high-speed sailboat with a pendulum keel. "Aqua Quorum" performed magnificently.
And so did Goss. A thousand miles from land in a Christmas Day Austral Summer hurricane under polar conditions, Goss received word that a race competitor, Raphael Dinelli, was aboard his sinking boat and facing certain death. Goss immediately turned "Aqua Quorum" back into the teeth of the storm, sailed nearly 200 miles back on his track, and plucked the hypothermic Dinelli from the sea.
Although Goss came in only fifth (in a field of six finishers) he was awarded the French Legion of Honor and an MBE by Queen Elizabeth for his rescue of Dinelli. CLOSE TO THE WIND is a tale of true heroism told in an honest, unassuming, but never diffident tone by a man who merely did what he felt he had to. And, more important than any accolades, is Goss's pleasure at making a new friend.
Not my cup of tea.......2006-06-26
There seems to be an odd hero worship associated with this author and his book about adventure and glory seeking. I found Goss's feats to be impressive but the account disturbing. I finished the book wishing I hadn't read it. He comes across as quite impressed with himself and has little of the modesty and understatement that I have found more typical of good adventure writing. (Compare Bernard Moitessier's books about equally difficult sailing accomplishments.) If you are looking for a philosopher/adventurer, Goss is not it. His reliance on expletives in key passages gives the account a vulgar quality. Like many others I was mystified as to why so much ink was spent on the fund raising effort. There probably was a good story there but I don't think he told it. Clearly Pete Goss is an awesome sailor, but this book portrays him more as attention seeker and even his website still boasts about the rescue. If you haven't read sailing books before read Moitessier or Smeeton instead.

This book is basically a life story, with no details spared of the races leading up to the vendee, the innumerable business ventures. If you're a novice sailor and want to read this book to learn about racing and bluewater sailing and whatnot, you may find yourself learning more about fundraising, instead.
Granted, it is a decent book, it was a quick and light read, and it really really motivates one to get up and do stuff. While he spends a great deal of time talking about his effort to raise the cash, his tenacity is impressive and inspiring.

One of the great books of mankind's love for his brother. The strength of that love and the power of that love proven in the ice cold seas of the roaring forties. The saved and the saviour both watched over by an angel named Tracey whose love and faith in her husband, Pete, made it all possible for the heroic rescue of Raphael Dinelli.
Gybe or tack?.......2001-08-15
A great story of adventure, as the author describes his voyages around the world in several premier yacht races. Of course, the author did not chose a literary profession as a career, but never the less, he does a good job of describing in exciting detail the struggles and achievements of his life long obsession with some of the most challenging sailing events in the world.

This is a lovely book, poignant and vivid. The process of regeneration and renewal of a shattered life is beautifully evoked. The landscapes and peoples of South Africa are described with passion but without prejudice, with evocative and wonderfully crafted prose.
The doubts and justifications of emigration and culture shock form an interesting undercurrent and counterpoint to the understated classical love story.

An overlooked masterpiece!.......2004-05-05
I tripped over this book at my public library a few years ago but did not have the sense to recognize the genius behind this book. I just re-read "The Road Wet" for the second time and it is a veritible masterpiece of both history and insight into Ireland, a place that I know quite well, but never as well as Roy. The photographs are extraordinarily good, quite unselfconscious yet graphically powerful. And, I myself am a photographer & author of a book on Ireland ("The Irish File: Images from a Land of Grace" Rizzoli/2002). I am envious of Roy's journey to Skellig Michael, his photos of the place and his experiences there. His chapter on St. Patrick is witout peer; ditto for the history ot Tara.
Why this book seems to be out-of-print is a mystery. If you can, get this book and read it. You will have a much better understanding of Irish history and culture. I will say the same for Jame's newer books "The Fields of Athenry" and "The Back of the Beyond", both wonderful reads packed with history written in a flowing and interesting way. The guy can write!!! As well as make photographs!! Finally, I just ordered two more of Roy's books, including "The Road Wet", from the used books connection via amazon.com.

Better than nothing, but just slightly.......2007-09-19
This book is required reading for a class I'm taking. The professor mentioned on the first day of class that is it a bit outdated and that there are few books on this new subject, so we were stuck. In reading it I understand now his comments. The first thing that jump out at me is the poor editing. Most legal books, even paralegal books, are competently written, except for this one. I find the argument difficult to follow and the logic seems circular in many instances. I'm fairly well versed with in rem jurisdiction, but had a hard time trying follow the explanation in this book. I'm assuming that it is because it is trying to appeal to an IT crowd as well as those with legal backgrounds. Unfortunately this book ends up doing both poorly. Given that however, it does provide a good general introduction to the topic and a good place to start if you are new to the concept of cyber law as a discipline. Stated another way, its better than nothing.

An very updated text. Concise, precise and well presented. There is no bored and extensive dissertations about what should be the law of internet. This is a pragmatic view. Every topic is well documented and comes with several sugested sites to visit for reference or aditional information. Be aware this is an American Legal System analisys, it does not explores civil law implications. Useful for beginners and advanced legal professionals working in the web industry.

New to Hobby - Good Book.......2004-02-22
I am new to the hobby of horology and enjoy owning this book. It provides a lot of detail and good photos of all the major brands (the competing buying guides leave out some significant brands). Well done and worth buying BEFORE you spend 30 times its price (or more!) on a watch. See the different styles and open your eyes. Take the TIME to appreciate it!

This is an excellent tool if your a collector, admirer, in the biz or anyone considering a watch purchase. An incredible reference tool, great in helping one narrow down their likes and dislikes...my 3rd year in a row. There are a couple of others...however this one is the most objective and useful.

I've bought each issue since I got interested in watches in 2000, even though the contents change very little from year to year. Another shortcoming of the annual is that the price information is neither complete nor accurate - you can usually get significant discounts on many of the watches featured. Nevertheless, it is great fun just to look at, and read about watches that I can only drool over :-P

This is a great guide to learn your way around the fascinating World of watch collecting! This book includes all the "major" players in the watch industry - but unfortunately, it does not include some of the smaller "houses" (i.e. manufacturers).
I was surprised to read that it included some non-European makers like some from the USA.
One thing I noticed is that the book has several errors, just try matching some of the photos with the descriptions provided and you'll see what I mean! For the publishers and editors: get some quality control, pleeeaaasse!
I recommend it for the beginner and the advance watch collectors.
And yes, I do agree with another reviewer, there's no such thing as too many watches! :-)

Wonderful Holiday Ideas!!!.......2001-12-10
I run a day home and with Christmas coming up it was wonderful to find so many ideas for the little ones to do. First, we made the Chocolate Kisses for them to give their parents for Chrismas.
A BIG one for the dads and a smaller one for the moms. :-) Actually, I already had some white chocolate at home, so I bought some bags of butterscotch chips and mixed them in and got caramel chocolate, so that's what the dads got and the moms got the real chocolate. We wrapped them in cellophane and put them in gift bags so they look really cute. I also put little strips of paper in the tops saying 'dad, you're the best' and 'we love you, mom.' Needless to say, one of my daughters saw them and wanted to know where hers is. by the way, she's married with children.
We have also made the applesauce/cinnamon ornaments this week, so at the moment they are drying and next week we will decorate them with glitter and so on. The kids had a ball kneeding the dough in the plastic bag. They sat in a circle and passed it around so everyone could have a squeeze. To tell the truth I was a little skeptical that it would turn into dough, but 'presto', it worked.
Tommorow I am going on a hunt for the red and white Christmas candy to make the candy wreaths. as crazy as it sounds, so far I have not been able to find it in Calgary, so I am hoping to find some of it somewhere so that we can make the wreaths next week.
Oh, and I nearly forgot, I also tried the Ice Cream, but that was for me. :-)
I have just ordered your 2 previous books and can't wait to get them.

Best Holiday Book Ever!!.......2001-11-17
My Children and I have spent countless fun filled hours creating many of the fresh, new, and creative projects in this book. Our favortes include the Swap Gunk and Goblin Make-up, these two projects along with the monster hand punch made our halloween party a hit! We are just now starting to create the pepermint wreaths and bird cookies for Christmas. All of the projects we made were quick, easy and inexpensive to create. This book is a hands down winner and is leaps and bounds better than any other Holiday craft book I have seen!

The best thing about this book is the statistics. You can't argue with facts. Too many books on the subject only sell their opinions. Who would know better the results of our no-spank society than a police officer?
My sister worked in a juvenile detention center that advertized itself as a youth shelter for victims of child abuse. She passed the test as the most loving bleeding heart gentle youth counsellor on the planet who could NEVER hit a child no matter what the circumstance. Then she found out their "abused children" were actually criminal teenagers who were ordered by the courts to spend time in this "shelter" after committing SERIOUS violent crimes that would put adults behind bars for many years.
She was forewarned that these "children" would probably be "scared, distrustful, and angry" because they had been, "abused, mistreated, neglected, and abandoned" by their parents. well, as it turned out, the teenagers DID think like children (you could not trust them with even 1 loose dollar in the room). They were indeed distrustful of adults and often angry if they were forced to go to school, etc. but for the most part they were just BORED. They had NO fear. They had tried everything; stolen and wrecked cars, beating people up for no reason and seriously injuring people who got in their way or looked at them wrong.
Because of all of the hype around spanking, she investigated this topic a bit with the parents of her charges. When their "sentence" was up and their parents would come to get them, she always asked them what forms of discipline they used at home. Most would admit to "talking firmly" and some had mentioned time outs, but when she asked about spanking, they ALL defended themselves, stating proudly that their children had NEVER been spanked (and junior would smugly agree and be proud of this fact as well).
She told me indeed they actually WERE abused, mistreated, neglected, and abandoned by their parents. The way their parents had raised them WAS a kind of abuse, raising them to believe there would never be any real consequences for outrageously wrong behavior. They were certainly neglected! they were certainly abandoned! Many of the parents actually opted to leave the kids in the shelter long after the court-order was finished, but the shelter had to force those neglected teens right back onto their terrified old parents because as soon as the gullible care-takers found out they had been duped (these were NOT children being rescued from beatings and abuse) many of the care-takers quit and the shelter eventually had to close down. These kids will be ready for what they'll expect to be a very cushy prison stay in just a few short years.

Surgenor nails it on the head with valuable insight and proof on why children (or juveniles) end up being the way they are. I believe in this book. This book has helped me to discipline my children in many ways. I even used it a few times (in place of my belt) to beat my son with.

This is a book every parent should read. Get your kids in line before they get out of line. I see too many parents who do not discipline their kids properly. In their family, the kids are the athority figure, doing what they want while the parents make excuses for them. Look up "backbone" on Amazon and buy one!

This guy tells it like it is. Whatever your little buddy is doing, you just nip it in the bud. Right now. Otherwise he'll wind up on the street, getting cuffed. Statistics demonstrate that most American presidents, movie actors and C.E.O.'s had daddies that used everything from canoe paddles to guns to keep their boys in line. Whereas, jailbirds typically have Liberal fathers who didn't believe in whipping. How can you argue with the facts?

This book completely destroys the rhetoric of the anti-spanking crowd who says that spanking a child makes them anti-social and violent. There are plenty of statistics in this book to prove otherwise!

After the helicopter accident in which he nearly lost his life, and two younger men who had not fully lived theirs did, Kirk Douglas came to reflect more deeply on his past and its meaning. This led him to begin learning and studying about the Jewish religion that he had been born into. Through this return he found a deeper and renewed meaning to his life.
This work is the sequel and continuation of his first autobiographical work 'Ragman's Son'. It is not as event-filled but makes up for this with its sincere reflectiveness. Douglas is a person of many talents, one of the great screen actors of America, and a person of great courage and determination.
He provides in this work a vivid example of how new meaning in life can be found by 'return' to the religious tradition in which one has been born.
Great book, but repeats most of Ragman's Son.......2004-01-19
After reading Ragman's Son, I enthusiastically bought this book. The first few chapters are mind blowing. Then Douglas starts undergoing what psychologists call "Life Review" in his attempt to assess his life and find greater spiritual meaning.
It was great, but if you've read Ragman's Son, hardly any of it was new. I felt as if I was reading 80% of the first book. Still, its a good read, and Douglas writes of his quest to find his spiritual self in a manner that I think will appeal to people who do not have religion in their lives. I definetly reccomend this book if you consider religion or spirituality overrated, but also want to find a bigger meaning to your own life.
Don't let the word "spiritual" scare you away. Douglas doesn't get preachy, "holier than thou" or dogmatic. Most of his own life was spent without an attempt to understand his own religion or a spiritual understanding of the world around him, and he still has a practical outlook.
I chose to give this book 4 stars, but if you read Ragman's Son, the reptition could be a disappointment.

I really enjoyed reading this autobiography. Kirk Douglas has had enough life and experience for his two autobiographies, and at the rate he is going, he'll have enough for a third!
Kirk is unafraid to let us into his weaknesses, his fears and desires. He doesn't let anything stop him. No stroke could steal his love of life away. His spirituality sustains him, and his sharing of it sustains us.
May he have long life.

Kirk Douglas has become a member of my family by the sensitivity of his writing. I feel as if I have known him the entire 46 years I have been on earth. I recommend this book to all those that are downcast and feel that life has not been fair to them. Mr. Douglas invites you into his heart and bears his soul. If you feel you are down in the valley, you surely will climb the mountain to victory as you read every word he has to share. Reading this book brought a smile to my face, a tear in my eye and a song in my heart!!
Douglas inspires us to look again at the religion we left........1999-02-20
When he was fourteen, Kirk Douglas left the religion of his childhood. Or did he? In his later years he came to realize that his view of the religion of his childhood was childish. Paul's famous lines to the Corinthians comes to mind: "When I was a child I thought like a child, I spoke like a child, I reasoned like a child."
Many of us dismissed our religious roots without really understanding or appreciating them. Douglas moved through the decades without looking back on that adolescent's decision to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater.' Serious encounters with his health and a near-death experience forced him to look again, which he did.
He learned, as we all must, that one's true religion, after all, is a function of experience. Early in life we think religion is a set of beliefs which are handed to us and either accepted or rejected, with little or no middle ground.
With encouragement from a rabbi, Douglas looked again at the old stories and to his surprise they had taken on new meaning and depth since his earlier reading. As Joseph Campbell would say, he found himself in those old stories; he came to realize that the stories are not about other people who lived 'way back when,' but about him, or you and me when we see ourselves in the stories.
The story he tells is like a myth in which we can see ourselves--an adolescent who leaves his religion, a man who works at his career, only to end up where he started, but to 'know the place for the first time,' as T. S. Eliot said.
