    Book Description

This biography explores the life of the American West's leading Christian Socialist in the late nineteenth century. Social, cultural, religious, political, and labor history are blended to capture Reed's controversial career as a preacher and reformer. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Reed sought to create what he called a "new community," God's kingdom on earth. His sermons and lectures envisioned the federal management of critical economic resources for the common good to guarantee everyone a "comfortable life." The popular preacher tirelessly criticized exploitative capitalism and corrupt machine politics and advocated social justice, labor reform, Native American rights, women's suffrage, scientific charity, and other causes. In 1894, he championed labor at the violent Cripple Creek strike and called Jesus Christ an "anarchist," controversies that led to his resignation from the affluent First Congregational Church. At his next pulpit, the nonsectarian Broadway Temple, he preached his Christian Socialism even harder to the poor and churchless. After a lengthy illness, the fiery Reed died in 1899.

      5 out of 5 stars a hero of mine.......2001-01-25

So I was a 12 year old tom boy looking for a hero and stumbled upon this bio. What Luck! I honestly can't remember reading of a person more adept at living, more intrinsically intersting and eccletic than Beryl Markham. Those looking for a quick fix can look at it like a story somewhere between Annie Oakley and a Barbra Stanwyk character. I'm 23 now and she's still a hero of mine. PS read West with Night before you order this.

      4 out of 5 stars well done.......2000-04-25

a book that only made me want to read more! on to read West with the Night and other Kenyan stories.

        Book Description

Cohen v. Cowles Media Company changed the course of First Amendment media law. After a quarter century of decisions interpreting the First Amendment to give media organizations preferential treatment, the Supreme Court ruled in 1991 that the Constitution did not give the press immunity from the laws ordinary citizens must obey. The American Bar Association quarterly Communications Lawyer (Spring 1998) calls Cohen a "media law hall of fame case." The author, who was the plaintiff's sole attorney in all phases of the case, provides detailed analysis of the complexities of constitutional litigation and the strategic and tactical considerations involved in formulating constitutional arguments in the Supreme Court and other courts. This is a classic David v. Goliath story of a lone lawyer who worked out of his basement taking on media and legal giants and winning. Scores of attorneys from major law firms around the country represented the Minneapolis and St. Paul newspaper defendants and their allies in court in a case where "experts" were confident that the press could never lose. The Cohen decision has revolutionized the law regarding accountability for wrongdoing by media organizations, and many federal and state courts have relied upon the Cohen case in holding media organizations liable for their actions. This lively account will interest not only legal and media scholars, but all readers interested in correcting injustice.

          1 out of 5 stars Horrible textbook.......2007-05-09

I had to buy this textbook for my one and only auditing class. It is dry to the point of being unreadable. It would literally take me a week to finish reading one chapter because of the urge to fall asleep after every other sentence.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Textbook - AVOID IF POSSIBLE (deserves 0 stars).......2003-03-04

This text is excruciatingly boring - it's too wordy and on the whole, simply a weak product. Not a teaching tool by any measure. The homework is VERY POORLY tied back to the text. The text itself is dry, with zero visual aids (no real bolding or section headers). Case examples are too short to really prove a point, which is a shame considering the value of case analysis in a subject such as auditing. An online "help site" is available for students...just as bad as the text...the powerpoint slides are AWFUL, it makes me wonder who edited this author's material. I am almost led to believe that this author is trying to keep the competition out of the auditing industry by boring potentially fresh blood from entering the marketplace. Hopefully some other auditor/CPA out there has written a book that actually has some value.....IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE, SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT - REPEAT - DO NOT!! - BUY THIS BOOK. I hope I can save at least one person some money out there.

          Book Description

Messier is the only textbook that combines risk analysis with a cycles approach. Messier uses a cycles approach that introduces the audit risk model early and uses the audit risk model as an outline for all of the cycle chapters. This unique and innovative approach has been developed in response to changing market dynamics. The systematic approach used in the subtitle for the text reflects the early introduction of three basic concepts that underlie the audit process: materiality, audit risk, and evidence. These are central to everything an auditor does. As such, this approach facilitates student development of auditor judgment, a vital skill in today's auditing environment.

4 out of 5 stars This book makes auditing as fun as possible.......2001-05-14

I used this book for an auditing class and I got a lot out of it. The book sets each chapter up in an understandable, and digestable way.The tables and charts are excellent summaries of the reading and it is entirely possible to just skip the reading and memorize those. Each chapter has thought-provoking questions at the end and activities that are helpful in analyzation. This book takes you from the first step in auditing to the way to fill out the audit report. I have fond feelings for this book.

                              Book Description

The Big Book of Small House Designs is a collection of more than 500 drawings illustrating all aspects of 75 small homes of various styles, from a New England farmhouse to a sophisticated steel frame to a Santa Fe ranch. Each design includes detailed floor plans, section drawings, elevations, and perspectives, as well as a description of the materials used and landscaping around the home. Keeping in mind that a chief priority for a small home is often energy efficiency, most of the plans incorporate some energy-efficient element. There are dozens of plans suitable for every environment and climate in the country. The designs are all a direct result of several international competitions that solicited from architects the best homes of 1,250 square feet or less. Contact information for the architects is provided in the back of the book.

4 out of 5 stars pleasant but not fulfilling.......2007-10-01

The book is large and would be best as a coffee table book. I am looking to expand my knowledge of small homes, green living and such. This book while interesting did not cut it for me. The drawings are understandable, but the information on each design is minimal, and more photos (if the design has been built) should be included as well to give a better sense of what the house in question will look like.

4 out of 5 stars Small House Design.......2007-05-13

I am pleased with the contents of this book. It was purchased as a gift for a grandson, who will soon receive it. I hope he enjoys it and will put some of the information to good use.

3 out of 5 stars Small House Designs.......2007-04-16

The book is interesting but the illustrations are somewhat difficult to
                              visualize and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2007-04-10

This book is a great source for small house designs. Has great plans and elevations of what the house looks like from the outside. It has a nice variety of styles and ideas that you could actually use. They also use a variety of materials used on the houses..Giving you the option to use other things like metals and woods in unconventional ways.

2 out of 5 stars Not even nice pictures.......2006-11-20

A compilation of few interesting ideas and very hard to see illustrations. Poor quality reproductions. No measurements at all. Furthermore the contact information in the back was not cross-referenced with the designs & listed no phone or web contact, just mailing addresses. Seems like the authors took the cheap and easy way out with a good idea.

Taunton Press's "The Cabin" is a much more inspiring & informational book.

I do not recommend this book.

                                Book Description

A cutting-edge design book for small apartments, Studio Apartments: Big Ideas for Small Spaces introduces the reader to the joys of small space living, whether in simple studios, tiny one-bedrooms, or more complex arrangements where two small rooms or studios are joined to form a larger but still compact living area.

Studio Apartments examines in detail how more than twenty architects have created remarkably refined and varied living spaces within small confines. A master bedroom can be carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then concealed behind a frosted-glass wall. A kitchen can evolve from a closet. A single long room with windows only at its end can become a warm and inviting living space. Here are some of the freshest, most original approaches to creating a real home within spaces smaller than 1,000 square feet, and in some cases less than 500 square feet.

The twenty-four beautifully photographed apartments are presented complete with floor plans, gorgeous before and after photographs, and clear text that leads the reader through the design process and highlights the "big idea" that makes each apartment distinctive.

With Studio Apartments, an apartment dweller with an eye for style can transform their dreams into reality. In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. With photos and case studies including floor plans of more than twenty studios under 800 square feet each, readers are shown solutions to the typical problems architects are asked to solve: creating sleeping alcoves, efficient kitchens, appealing bath and dressing areas, adequate storage, and work and entertainment areas.

Actual projects show how architects and interior designers extract maximum style and usage from small, urban apartments: a master bedroom is carved from seemingly nonexistent space and then hidden behind a frosted glass wall; a closet becomes a cook's kitchen, and a single long room with windows at one end is transformed into a warm and inviting living room. The "big idea" that makes each apartment special is highlighted in designs ranging from traditional to casual modern to cutting edge.In this book, James Trulove takes on the challenge of interior design for small apartments. This book is a great start if you don't know what kind of house you want to build. However, the pictures are small and there a very few interior pictures to complement the lay-outs. It does provide an online link to the houses that gives you more detailed information. Overall, it's worth the money, but I think the website is easier to navigate through.

If you're a fan of Phil Ochs, the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 1960's, you need this book!

In an obvious labor of love, David Cohen has assembled a complete bibliography of writings by Phil Ochs, writings about Phil, a complete discography of Phil's recordings, a detailed listing of all known audio tapes of Phil's performances, a listing of all of Phil's known concert performances, a detailed listing of all of Phil's known television appearances, and a comprehensive listing of all of Phil's known songs (including covers of Phil's songs performed by other artists), etc. Cohen had access to the personal archives of Phil's family in preparing this book.

The icing on the cake is Cohen's brief biographical sketch of Phil's life.

                                        Book Description

Representations of "the Jew" have long been a topic of interest in Joyce studies. Neil Davison argues that Joyce's lifelong encounter with pseudo-scientific, religious, and political discourse about "the Jew" forms a unifying component of his career. He offers new biographical material, and presents a detailed reading of Ulysses to show how Joyce confronts the controversy of "race," the psychology of internalized stereotype, and the contradictions of fin-de-siècle anti-Semitism.
