The memoirs of Cardinal de Retz cover all the great events during the minority of Louis XIV and the administration of Cardinal Mazarin.

The author, John Francis Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, Sovereign of Commercy, Prince of Euville, second Archbishop of Paris, Abbot of Saint Denis in France, was born at Montmirail, in Brie, in 1614, and died in Paris in 1679.

This history was first printed in Paris in 1705.

Find another resource.......2007-08-20

As a neophyte to knife collecting I thought a book with the sub-title "The Complete Handbook of Knife Collecting" would be a great start. NOT. There are bits and pieces in the book that are interesting. It lists the different materials used for knife handles, but fails to give even a basic idea of how to identify them. In the listing of American Knife Makers, the list isn't alphabetical. For a resource book this is insane. While this book appears to have logical sections, nothing in the sections appears in a logical order, and they seem to be merely touching the surface of each topic. There is a suggestion to be sure not to confuse two companies with similar names, and not even a hint how to do that. It appears to be more of a compilation of unrelated articles than a guide. There is more history about companies than information about the knives they made. This is a book for the "immediately useless reference book" shelf.

Historical background is very light.......2006-12-25

I'm a history buff and enjoy the history behind different patterns. There is a fair amount in the book. Unfortunately, my expectations were set based on the local library having Levine's 4th edition. As an example, compare the jack knife sections and the descriptions on patterns. I assumed this book would be an update on values, but leave content intact. Instead, big chunks are missing. Blade is a fine magazine, but this book is a big disappointment.

This book covers everything from old factory made folders to custom knives and their makers. It is a very useful book for finding old knives in one place.

A slightly better effort........2006-01-24

This is the latest effort from the same folks who destroyed "Levines Guide to Knives and Their Values" by publishing the emasculated 5th edition. This effort is a step up, albeit a small one and from a position pretty low on the ladder. The format of the book has been improved, with clear page numbers and reformatted data tables, but most of the photos are the same and the text is still the same as that in Levines 4th edition.The listing of knife markings and manufacturers is pretty good with lots of additions, but still missing the quality ratings of the manufacturers. Pricing examples for individual examples of knives have been updated. Some sections are unchanged from data displayed in Levine's 4th edition. The process for valuing a a pocket knife has been improved? to one taking 4 pages to explain and it is hidden in the middle of the volume and not listed in the Table of Contents. MY guess is that somebody wasn't too proud of the effort or process. In Levine's 4th edition the process is explained using 1/2 a page inside the back cover. I bought it because I thought it was a real update to Levine's 4th edition, but I'm disappointed to find in most areas it is not and definitely not worth the expense if your copy of Levine's 4th edition is still in one piece. Just one man's opinion.

Brings Color Into A Black and White World.......2004-09-04

The artwork is terrific - on a variety of levels. First of all, it's gorgeous and full of energy. The detail is astounding. Second, it's amazing to FINALLY see these outfits in color after only seeing them in black and white since what seems like the dawn of time. And the book keeps it all fun and lively! I highly recommend it - and the price is right. Buy two - one to keep and the other to cut up and play with.

I've been watching I LOVE LUCY for years and never knew what I'd been missing until I bought this! Allan Glaser's book gives a peek at the clothes Lucy actually wore in color (after only seeing them in black & white on tv) and in the most wonderful detail. This is a real treasure.

I think this is such an awesome book, especially if you are a huge Lucille Ball fan like I am. Rick Carl illustrated all the pictures and he did a marvelous job. All the beautiful dresses Lucille Ball wore on I Love Lucy were all illustrated just the way you would imagine it if the show had been in color. I recomend this book to everyone who likes I Love Lucy. It would be a wonderful gift for anyone.

Al Hansen, circa 1965-69.......2002-11-14

Al Hansen was my advisor in college. Having said that, let me also add that his teaching continues to impact every day of my life in a most positive fashion. i had the good fortune of being a member of a small group of earnest students at Rutgers University in Newark who basically followed Al around for four years and never regretted it. perhaps, my most memorable experience was going with Al and a few other students to a party at Andy Warhol's factory for the Velvet Underground. i also collected hersey chocolate wrappers and empty camel cigarette packs for Al.

Far Better Than Sliced Bread.......2000-03-08

Do you know anything about Al Hansen? Before buying this book, I had no idea that he was such a renown member of the Fluxus/Happenings community. Al was colleages with such icons as Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, and John Lennon. In the book, it is mentioned that as children, Beck and his brother Channing would be sent on missions to collect cigarette butts for their dear grandpa's art. I used to wonder how Beck could be so inventive, but now I see where his roots lie. Al is the reason we have our beloved Beck. Al is why we can today defy all sexx laws. And so even though he is deceased, it is comforting to know that his legacy lives on, not only in his art, but in his eccentric rock-star grandson.

Note: In case you were going to buy this for your Beck-crazed teeny-bopper, be aware that this book contains some nudity.

a whole new appreciation for cigarette butts........1999-11-17

beck hansen and his zany grandpa use cigarette butts as artistic media. you wouldn't think that something so trashy could be so beautiful. it's miss-shapen, partially grotesque, and acutely obtuse. human shapes composed of matches and cigarettes provide a uniquely symbolic look at what makes us-- bits and pieces of what others throw away. i personally drove from seattle to nyc to see the opening of the art exibit featured in the book. although i wouldn't suggest everyone go to such extents, injesting the book is nice start.

In Cathy Yardley's "Romancing Rose," Rose Parker tries to evade her grandmother's match-making attempts by proving to her that she can pass on her Vietnamese heritage, whether or not she dates a Vietnamese guy. Rose's tutor is Paul Duong, who's at first reluctant to help Rose with her Vietnamese culture crash course, since he's not too sure she's serious about actually learning. As Rose tries to learn what she can in time for her "test," she and Paul become closer.

In Katherine Greyle's "Dragon for Dinner," Chinese American Su-Ling Chen is determined to rebel against her family. She does just that when she gets a perfect stranger, a motorcycle-riding bad boy (she thinks), to pretend to be her obnoxious American date. It doesn't take long for that plan to go awry, especially when it's discovered that her "date" is also her neice's teacher.

In Saveeha Johnson's "The Spice Bazaar," Nalini agrees to meet a man a match-maker picked out for her. It's love at first sight, but not everything is as it seems. The man she meets is not, in fact, Dilip, the man the match-maker chose for her, but his friend Lokesh. He's so entranced by Nalini that he can't bring himself to tell her the truth, but he can't hide his identity forever.

In Karen Harbaugh's "Love.com," Amy Miyazaki tries to avoid her mother's match-making attempts (the woman's been nicknamed the Blind Date Empress) by accepting a web-designing job. Amy had no idea she'd end up falling for her new boss, however. Things seem perfect, until it's revealed that Amy's grandmother may have been instrumental in pushing the two of them together.

I haven't actually read all that many romance novels or stories with Asian-Americans as protagonists, other than Eileen Wilk's "Only Human" (in _Lover Beware_). I've never read match-making stories quite like these before, so the stories were, for the most part, very refreshing reads. However, most of the stories seemed to be missing something, keeping them from being truly excellent, hence the four-star rating. Paul and Rose's relationship in "Romancing Rose" actually grated a lot - the author's attempts to create tension merely made it seem like the two really didn't belong together, in spite of how it all turned out. I couldn't help but think that there would be some serious trouble in their relationship later on. I had some of the same problems with "Dragon for Dinner," up until the end, which was really pretty sweet. I enjoyed "The Spice Bazaar" the most, although the concept of actually being okay with an arranged marriage took some getting used to, for me at least. That story requires the most "cultural bending" - the match-making of the other stories is much more familiar to me. "Love.com" is pretty good. My problem with it is the problem I have with most romantic short stories - love develops at a breakneck pace that I have trouble suspending my belief for.

Great anthology!.......2003-04-29

Romancing Rose by Cathy Yardley leads off with the story of a young woman whose grandmother is determined that she not forget her Oriental heritage. In a bargain to get the old lady off her back for a year, Rose takes a course in her culture, and is in for a huge surprise. She never wanted to fall for an Oriental man, but love does not always do what we want.

Katherine Greyle's contribution DRAGON FOR DINNER, brings her Regency comedic flair to the modern world. Su Ling does her best to be a rebel, even bringing home what she thinks is a motorcycle riding bad boy for dinner just to shock her family. Mitch is not what he seems, and both are about to learn how to prioritize family and love.

THE SPICE BAZAAR moves to Indian culture and gives Sarbeeha Johnson a great start to her career. Arranged marriages and deceptions prove to be quite a tangle for a young couple.

Finally, Karen Harbaugh concludes in LOVE.COM, and two young people with match making parents learn what love means.

***** Normally, multi cultural romance means that the hero and heroine will be African American, and once in a while, Hispanic. There are, however, other cultures, and this collection of stories sheds new light on the Oriental one, with emphasis on those of mixed race. *****

Hilarious fun!.......2005-08-05

I loved this one! I read these delicious stories here and there - on the train, in bed, lounging in the afternoon. Some made me cringe and be glad that wasn't me. Others were truly laugh out loud funny! I just had to read some of them aloud to my husband. We had such good times laughing and cringing about them! We even shared our own worst dates. Turns out they both involved the movie "There's Something About Mary"!

This book isn't going to change your life, but it may make you feel better about it!

PS. I really want to send an anniversary card to Amy's parents! I can't believe their wedding story!!

Conscience and courage is about the people who at great risk to themselves and their families helped Jews to escape from the Nazis.

It focuses on such courageous individuals as Stefania Podgorska Buzminski , a Polish teenage girl who hid 13 Jews in her home ; Alexander Roslan , a dealer in the black market who kept uprooting his family to shelter three Jewish children in his care , Joop Westerweel who presided over a network in the Netherlands that smuggled Jewish children to safety ; Diplomats such as Sempo Sugihara , Japanese consul based in Kovno , Lithuania , Aristide De Sousa Mendes , the Portuguese Consul General in Bourdieux , France and of course Raoul Wallenberg , whose efforts saved thousands of Jews from extermination.

It also covers the stories of such well known rescuers as Oskar Schindler and Miep Gies.

This book not only focuses on the stories of these brave individuals, but also explores why they acted as they did , and how their efforts and it's results affected them both during and after the war.

Many people chose to help out of moral reasons or out of love for their charges. Others where professionals had the skills and tools to help , and others where children who from an early age where involved in the rescue efforts of their parents.

Some rescuers worked alone and others worked in networks.

These stories are being re-examined at a time when some , like Iranian Presdient Mahmoud Ahmadinejad deny the holocaust happened-while working to carry out a real holocaust against the Jews , while others forget history and aim to dismantle the Jewish State , built to a large extent by holocaust survivors.

Read her book for a very good idea of what some people did to help the Jews during this horrific time when most people in the world stood still. But if you have severe problems due to the Holocaust, I regret that she may very well go against some of the very noble ideas in her book, because that was what happened to me, a 2nd generation survivor while I was in "therapy" with her. She didn't even care if I was going to die due to my difficulties.

Inspiring.......2004-02-28

This book is both fascinating and inspirational. Fogelman shares the stories of a number of rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust. She also offers her insight regarding the psychological effects of risking ones life for others and why the individuals (and sometimes groups) chose to do good. This novel offers a little known aspect of the Holocaust and presents a shining light from an era of darkness.

Eva Fogelman tells the stories of hundreds of Gentile rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust. Her accounts are often very moving, and the book is nicely done. She makes an idealistic plea for government and voluntary institutional support for altruism as a safeguard against future genocide, which is charming, but even she admits this may be a little too 'utopian.'

I really appreciated this book, and was touched by the sobering picture of how modernity and secularism have not brought real moral progress, but instead have made it easier to carry out evil in a grander scale. I don;t think this is the author's point, but it certainly was a conclusion I draw from all such accounts fo 20th century genocide.

My only dissappointments with the book -- while Fogelman as a psychologist proports probe the MOTIVES behind the extraordinary courage shown by the Gentile rescurers -- how their own 'moral compass' gave them the ability to stand against antisemitic hate, she shows very little understanding of how Biblical Christian values were likely decisive in so many cases. She seems somewhat ill-equipped to probe the motives of the truly committed Christian. Perhaps this explains why she makes no mention at all of some of the most famous and interesting cases of rescuers who acted out of profoundly Biblical convictions of justice and mercy (like Corrie Ten Boom, whose story is told in the book and film The Hiding Place; or Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who is give just one sentence in the book).
