Very illuminating!.......2003-10-23

Wall Street Journal hit the nail on the head when they wrote that Davis was "corrupt, imcompetent and passive."

If you don't live in California or feel that the recall was wrong for any reason, read this book. See what Gray Davis did to this great state and why the state would have been far worse off had he been allowed to stay in office.

The nicest thing I can say bout Mr. Davis is that he was gracious in his concession speech. That was a class act. Unfortunately, his administration as Governor was not class at all.

When I was visiting the east coast at the beginning of August from my home in California, the recall of Gray Davis was on everyone's lips.

However, thanks to the superficial and leftist coverage of the national news, very few people I talked to had any understanding of the grievances against Davis that led to the recall petition's overwhelming 1.6 million signatures.

I wish I'd brought about 100 copies of this book with me to hand out to each of them. It chronicles the five years worth of corruption, graft, cronyism, incompetence, and overall crookedness of the Davis administration that never made the national news.

If you're wondering what's behind the so-called "circus," as the leftist media inaccurately calls it, read this book.

Great Insights in to Northern Canadian history........2003-10-14

As a Canadian and living in the Arctic I found this book to be very informative and giving more insight to historic events than what are normally taught in our schools. Peter Newman was able to write this without the typical constraints associated with being "politically correct".

If you're interested in true Canadian History, albeit one small part of it, definitely read this book. If you want an exciting and riveting book and don't have much of an interest in northen Canada then don't read it.

Its amazing that the Bay, and to a greater extent the British, were able to be successful. They seem to be more like a bunch of bumbling bafoons.

Read this book!.......2002-05-20

Lovers of adventure, I implore you. Read this book! I picked this one up on a whim several years ago and was completely awestruck! I could not put this one down to save my soul! Believe me, my friends, I would not steer you wrong on this one.

Not Very Exciting.......2002-04-15

This book is a review of a very successful real estate company in Canada. My more then exciting introduction is about how I felt about the book. There were facts, lots of them but overall no real excitement or much to get the normal reader interested in the book. I got through about 175 pages before I gave up. The author tried to punch up the book, but the subject matter did not lend its self to it, there is just noting scandalous or exciting about a well-run company. This is more of a 400-page case study best left to a university class on management. Unless you work here or are related to some on that does I doubt you would find much value in this book.

An exciting story of adventure, exploration and human folly........1996-08-01

This is the unvarnished history of the Hudsons Bay Company. Extremely well researched and a pleasure to read this is the story of the founding of the company that opened up Canada and the Artic to trade. Filled with stories of exploration, adventure, hard headed business and hardship on the frontier. This isn't just the story of the founders, but the nuts and bolts of survival at the edge of the known world. If you enjoy history and adventure this will be hard to put down. Vol. 2 is Caesers of the Wildnerness.

During the period between the publication of Pierre Esprit Radisson’s Voyages by the Prince Society of Boston in 1885 and the appearance of Caesars of the Wilderness in 1943, scholarly journals and books were often enlivened by the historical controversy surrounding Radisson and his fellow explorer, Medard Chouart, Sieur Des Groseilliers. Often referred to as the “Radisson problem,” the controversy called into question almost every aspect of the two men’s lives, from the authenticity of parts of Radisson’s narrative to the exact itinerary the men followed in their travels.

The book is useful as a reference dictionary of accounting and tax related terminology. I was expecting instead a listing of deductions as implied by the title.

No tax code just no non-sense explainations of what is and is not deductible. I am a tax preparer and I give these to all of my small business clients

This is a great book for starters. It shows each deduction with explanation. I still use it as a reference before calling my accountant. There is not much surprises as far as new deductions but this books is a great addition to your reference library.

Anyone who is self-employed should own 422 Tax Deductions to educate yourself about your possibilities.

Fascinating Riddle Within an Enigma.......2007-06-21

The Voynich manuscript remains one of the most puzzling artifacts handed down to us from antiquity. It is in an unknown language, using an unknown script, and not so much as a word has been successfully translated (though many have tried). It is filled with whimsical illustrations of plants that cannot be identified, stars that do not exist, and astrological diagrams unlike anything seen elsewhere. It is also filled with drawings of naked women cavorting in vessels of green liquid for purposes which cannot be fathomed. The author is unknown, the date is unknown (although figured to be between 1250-1450), and how the manuscript came to be preserved for the past 650 years is also a mystery.

It has been suggested by some researchers, and the authors of this book tentatively agree, that the whole thing might be an elaborate Medieval fake. Yet the sheer magnitude of it -- 272 pages, 211 illustrations, 170,000 characters, all carefully arranged and consistently produced -- would seem to argue against that. Add to that the statistical analysis of the text, which indicates that it probably *is* a legitimate language, and you have a real puzzle on your hands.

Since so little has been gleaned from the manuscript itself, the authors take the reader on a tour through Medieval scholarship, alchemy, astrology, astronomy, religious history and cryptology (since many have speculated it could be in some kind of code). The lives of several of the proposed authors are studied, along with many people who may have had a hand in preserving it. Thus the book is about a lot more than the manuscript itself, and indulges in many fascinating digressions along the way.

In the end, the riddle remains unsolved. The Voynich is probably a minor alchemical text of no particular import, perhaps the last surviving text in this language after the Crusades destroyed nearly 80% of the world's non-Christian libraries. For a fascinating glimpse into the superstitious Medieval world and the learning lost through subsequent winnowing by rampaging zealots, this book offers an excellent read.

The Elegant Enigma.......2007-05-07

I was very excited to read this book, as I very much enjoy learning the path of mysterious texts. This book presents many possibilities for the origins of the codex. I personally don't have patience to cipher the many options the authors gave in cracking the text, but I appreciated the layers of work they put into presenting them. Also, I was pleased that they did not shy away from esoteric possibilities. The description of it being a written account of glossolalia was particularly interesting. All the same, this book is more about the figures around the manuscript. Whatever you come away believing about the source of the text, it's path has been colorfully impressive.

Entertaining for a Chieftain Fan.......2005-04-16

This is a wonderful history book of the Chieftains. The book is very informative about their love of Irish heritage, the traditional music, and all the wonderful groups, singers, musicians that they have shared the stage and recordings. Paddy has a great sense of humor, and he is the glue that holds the group together and make them what they are. I own a lot of the Chieftains recordings, videos, and I look for more products that they have made. We were sadden for the loss of their great harpist, piantist, Derek Bell. We all miss him.RIP

Great access but absurdly disorganized.......2004-01-30

Mr. Glatt appears to have enjoyed carte blanche access to these fabulous musicians but his book reads like he spilled his notes and put them in the book in random. One moment he's praising founder Paddy Moloney for his computer-like brain, the next we're supposed to laugh that Paddy is five hours late for a major recording session.

There's some fun stuff here, but the weeds are thick!

Nanci and the Chieftains.......2003-08-10

I purchased this CD because of my interest in Nanci Griffith as a songwriter, musician, and performer. Nanci does not disappoint as she breathes life into the narrative of fellow musicians and collaborators, the Chieftains. It is her familiarity with them as friends and musicians which adds to the excitement of the performance. Nanci has already won three grammies, been nominated for seven, and this should have been her fourth.

Nanci Griffith does a fabulous job narrating the audio version of the Chieftain's autobiography. Her voice is as sweet and flowing as the melodious tunes she sings.

The Royalty of Irish Music.......2001-12-25

Irish music is very hot. It is amazing how many successful Irish bands (of all types) have emerged from this tiny Island of 5 million. Yet in no small way can they all point to a single pioneering band that helped put Irish music on the map.

The Chieftains are more than simply a successful collection of great musicians who have toured the world for over 30 years. When they started, in the mid 1960's, there was little interest in traditional music in Ireland. In Ireland, Irish music wasn't considered to be "hip" and broadcasts were limited to relatively unimaginative ceili music. The most famous Irish musicians of time, the Clancy Brothers, were not even living in Ireland when they began.

The Chieftains took traditional Irish music and infused it with a new energy and style. They soon developed a cult following, but after doing the sound track for the movie Barry Lyndon (early 70's) their popularity exploded. Even after upwards of 30 albums, they and constant touring, their popularity never falters.

The Chieftains : The Authorized Biography by John Glatt tells the story of how it all happened. If it weren't all true, it would sound wildly improbable.

For anyone interested in Irish music, this book is a must.

Martin Luther King Jr. Biography.......2004-08-03

Martin Luther King Jr. by Mary Winget is an excellent book for elementary school students. It provides detailed information about the influence he made on our nation. It also includes very useful information about civil rights, rosa parks, voting rights and the numerous marches, protests, and sit ins he participated in. The most interesting part of the book for me was the section on Mohandas Ghandi and how his and Mr King's philosophy on nonviolent resistance has greatly influenced the world.
