William Bradley, Ex-Governor and former veteran of practical politics, written to his friend and protégé Ned, who is still busy carving a career back in the old state. Although the author was not well known in political circles, he must have had some close associates who provided him with a wealth of anecdotal material about Illinois political affairs around the turn of the century. These humorous and revealing stories of political machinations of the era spoof both candidate and voter. Fictitious names have been substituted for the principals, for example, Uncle Cal. Peavey as Governor Altgeld and Mike Boylan as Clarence Darrow.

Much ado about nothing!.......2000-12-14

What a letdown! While this book purports to cover the period 1950-1975, I was sadly disappointed to find that it completely omits one of the most important musical influences of that period, DON COSTA, who was a noted arranger-conductor, master of the 12-string guitar, a performer in his own right, and a man who influenced the careers of many well-known performers like Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Johnny Mathis, Ferrante & Teicher, Paul Anka, and the list goes on. Don Costa's fabulous arrangements have appeared on labels such as ABC-Paramount, Columbia, Mercury, United-Artists, and his own label, DCP-International. Don Costa was a true musical genius and as such, he was hired to be the musical director of a major Boston, MA radio station when he was only 15 years old!... One can only wonder what other important performers or facts were left-out of this book, and such omissions only serve to cast doubt on the seriousness of the data that did manage to find a place between the covers of this publication!

An excellent book that, perhaps, bites off too much.......1998-12-04

This is one of the best price guide books for American records. Due to its detailed information and clearly organized listings, it surpasses all previous publications in its scope and usefulness. It adds artists not previously mentioned in past price guides but does omit artists on a somewhat arbitrary basis. Why Getz and not Gillespie etc.? For the artists it does include, much hard work is reflected in the thorough discographies which list reissue information and pressing chronology with great accuracy. Obscure artists with limited product are, as is common with books of this type, omitted. For the money, this is the best book. Only Osborne's Rockin Records covers more ground, but in less essential detail.

This book is a combination of two earlier Lark books, The Great T-Shirt Book: Make Your Own Spectacular, One-Of-A-Kind Designs, by Carol Taylor (1992), and The Ultimate T-Shirt Book: Creating Your Own Unique Designs, by Deborah Morgenthal (1998), copied word-for-word and photograph-for-photograph. It contains almost no new material at all.

Oddly, the copyright page gives no indication that the book consists of previously published material. Even the names of the two original authors, Carol Taylor and Deborah Morgenthal, do not appear anywhere on or in Chris Rankin's book, not even on the copyright page.

Publishing old books under a new name, with a new author, amounts to fraud against buyers who previously purchased the earlier books. We are going to have to be cautious about anything published by Lark Books.

Those who did not purchase the earlier books will find this book to be useful and inspiring. It contains a large number number of well-photographed, beautiful, professional-looking examples of how to paint, tie-dye, stamp, marble, batik, and screen print t-shirts. The instructions are not detailed enough to be fully useful, but they are good enough to decide whether a technique sounds intriguing enough to bother finding more reliable instructions for it.

Great Book, Covers Everything.......2006-03-06

I am the mother of a 9 month old baby and I checked out this book at my local library. I was very impressed with this book and the broad range of topics that it covers. It had many great suggestions in it. I love reading Parents magazine and this book is a great resource to have at home. It puts all of the information in one place. I will definitely be buying my own copy!

A treasure trove of practical advice on child-rearing........2001-06-14

One of my favorite parts of Parents magazine is the "It Worked For Me" section. Think of this book as a 468 page article filled with tips and advice from parents all over America! However, not only do you get the parents' personal tips, but you also get professional advice for such things as building self-esteem, teaching etiquette, vaccination schedules, and so many other relevant and sometimes urgent topics.

I think of this book as being the equivalent of having several hundred friends that you can pick up the phone to call for advice when your child is in the throes of a tantrum, isn't interested in the potty AT ALL, or won't eat/latch on/give up that binky. There are also sections on planning a vacation with kids, doing crafts, and finding a reliable caregiver, so it's not all kid-behavior oriented...but it is all common-sense, practical advice that when you are on your last nerve, may just add a few axons to the bundle!

A remarkable diary.......2007-03-11

I came upon this book in my local library and promptly checked it out. Yes, it does seem confusing but then again, when we look at the context within which this was written, the confusing aspect of the work seems natural. The author went through living hell during her period in the work and death camps, and it was a miracle that her attempts to keep a diary, however fragmented the entries may seem, was successful. This work is such a valuable documentation of a teenager's experience of the Holocaust...reading her entries, one gets an intimate glimpse of the unimaginable horror she went through, things we could not fathom or imagine, yet very real. I rank this work right up there with the Diary of Anne Frank, and other memoirs of the Holocaust period, like A Jump for Life by Ruth Cyprys.

I found this book quite amazing. The horrors that she went through were described with amazing detail, and to me, I felt as if I were in her place. The vocabulary she uses to depict each seen seemed so carefully chosen, and extremely high level for her age. I also found it incredible that she was able to right this amazing book, just off of notes that she wrote when she was young. How terrible a position she must have been in.
There is one quote that I found fascinating. "Fever! Isn't it a sign of life, proof that I'm persevering, hanging on? Thank God, because after all is said and done, wouldn't it be stupid, wouldn't it be madness, to let go of a life where there are such nights, and such creatures?" These words hit me like a brick wall. Thinking back to all the times myself, and everyone around me as well, has complained about life, I felt so ungrateful. How can anyone do this, when there are people that have had such terrible catastrophes in their life, so bad that they are grateful to get sick and have a fever, just to feel alive?

The Beautiful Days Of My Youth by Ana Novac is a book based on Ana's diary she kept while at Auschwitz and Plaszow. This is not the most well written book but not many 15 year olds could even write while going through the horrendous conditions at Auschwitz and Plaszow. We follow her life through the concentration camps as she is worked nearly to death and fights sickness after sickness until Britain soldiers liberate her camp. Overall the book is a bit confusing at times and a tad boring at times but a book that describes the life of a teenage girl at a concentration camp pretty well.

I had to do a biography and I picked this one, but it was really actually hard to understand and explain to the class the requirements of my book report. I could say it was very well done for a fourteen year old, but still, there were too many ideas taking place and that started to get confusing. I recommend this for any that wants to know more of the events of Aushwitz and Plasow, but for something for school, I highly recommend you to not read it. It is very hard to prepare a speech for the class on this one meeting all the requirements.

With few accounts of what happened this book is a rare gem........1999-02-03
