Book Description
"Exploring Other Worlds" tells the intertwined stories of the Arctic explorer Elisha Kent Kane and the spiritualist medium Margaret Fox and examines their unlikely relationship. Kane, from a prominent Philadelphia family, became one of the most renowned and honored explorers of the antebellum era. Fox grew up in rural upstate New York and, as one of the Fox Sisters, became a famed and somewhat notorious "spirit rapper" whose strange "knocks" were said to be communications from the dead. The two were rumored to have had a love affair, and they may even have been secretly married.
In their separate professional lives, Kane and Fox each revealed something new and strange (though not necessarily true) to their audiencesthe unknown worlds of the globe and the spirit. They brought experiences to their listeners that were exotic and delightful. The burgeoning commercial mass culture of antebellum America provided a natural venue for tales of huge icebergs, fierce polar bears, and messages from the dead. Their public careers bridged the gaps between the scientific investigations of an earlier Enlightenment age and a newer form of sensational inquiry growing up in a democratic marketplace.
While Kane and Fox began by generating curiosity about geography and the nature of the human soul, in time their personal relationship became the basis for what newspaperman Horace Greeley would call an "impertinent curiosity." Newspapers printed letters about their supposed romance, and eventually a book purporting to be the famous explorer's love-letters to the notorious spiritualist was published. Curiosity about the Arctic and curiosity about the fate of the soul after death were transformed into curiosity about the private affairs of a new kind of media-driven public celebrity.

A Fascinating Account of 2 Famous People You Never Heard Of.......2007-07-15
I thoroughly enjoyed Chapin's well-written account of Elisha Kent Kane, Maggie Fox, and the nineteenth century American society in which they lived. These two historical persons were an unlikely pair. She was a marginally-educated, blacksmith's daughter who unexpectedly precipitated a national craze for the supernatural when she claimed the ability to speak to the dead. He was the eldest son of an aristocratic Philadelphian family, highly educated, and apparently addicted to the thrilling life of adventure and exploration. But chance threw these people together in a doomed romance, their common ground the society in which they lived: a world where the impossible might just be possible after all. Messages could fly through telegraph lines -- perhaps they could also travel from heaven to earth? The top of the globe remained an unknown place -- was it not possible that there could be an Open Polar Sea filled with marine life?
Chapin terms this era of American history a "Culture of Curiosity." This is a good term for the pre-Civil War society which found entertainment in the lecture halls, learning about such diverse topics as phrenology, philosophy, and hypnotism. It was a world in which young Maggie Fox could become a celebrity for nothing more than a well-implemented hoax. It was a world in which Elisha Kent Kane could become the world's foremost explorer and scientist -- or a laughing-stock if he were to marry a famous spirit-rapper.

Great Book.......2004-09-09
I thought that this book was seriously one of the best I have read in a while. Chapin does and excellent job in both telling the story and exploring the characters. I fervently look forward to the next thing Chapin writes because I know that not only will it be well researched, but it will be presented in a captivating fashion.

Customer Reviews:
A must read for any practitioner dealing in the area.......2006-07-07
I used this book as a supplement to Prof. Posin's course at Tulane University. He makes comprehension of the material very simple and even fun in places... for sick individuals entertained by the finer points of the Tax laws. All in all a GREAT digest of essential material.
Excellent Introduction to First Year Law.......2004-12-01
This author explains the fundamental but essential concepts in a clear and concise manner through his text and flow charts. Numerous real-life examples help the first-year law student and/or taxpayer grasp important rationales that will allow practical application in his/her own life and on the exams. I highly recommend this book.
My students have found this book helpful.......2002-01-11
My students have generally found this book helpful. The diagrams are wonderful and often help people visualize very complex tax transactions. I also think the book does an excellent job of explaining very difficult material. Other reveiws have indicated that there are erros in this book. It does appear that there is a typo in the Clark case, but I have not noticed more than the usual number of typos in this book. In addition, contrary to the statements of other reviewers, I think the discussion of both Glenshaw Glass (I am not sure what is laughable about the book's presentation of the holding in the case) and Harris are on target.
My advice is buy the book if you want some added help with Federal Income Tax, but use it as a reference, not as a bible. Also realize that Tax Professors often disagree about tax law, and about the merits of various cases, that is what makes law fun.
Don't buy!.......2001-11-06
The "holdings" and facts in this hornbook are wrong. Cases such as Harris and Clark contain horrible inaccuracies. Hope this helps.
Do NOT buy this hornbook!.......2001-11-04
Apparently the editor of this masterpiece is blind as a pig. My professor (LLM N.Y.U) suggested nutshells, etc., but, as her eyes narrowed, clearly stated, "Do not use the hornbook. It is wrong." She then stated, "It is just wrong." Always skeptical, I decided to check for myself. I reached the same conclusion after twenty minutes of reading. The facts (monetary amounts) in Clark are wrong. The "holding" in Harris is totally irrelevant, and the "holding" in Glenshaw Glass is downright laughable ... and wrong. Hope this helps.

Customer Reviews:
A useful guide.......2007-07-10
If you have discovered a pile of old 78 rpm records of your grandparents and would like to know their value this book is probably NOT the right book for you. As the author indicates, most of the 78 rpm records are without any value for serious collectors. In this book you'll find names of artists that you have never known... Yes believe me: Your Bing Crosby "White Christmas" is not a rare item. It's quite common. Enjoy such a record as a vintage item but not as a collectible record. This is what the author says at the beginning. So once again: Don't buy this book in order to learn the value of your Dinah Shore, John McCormack, Frank Sinatra records..
I cannot judge the values in the blues / rockabilly / country part of the book because I don't listen to such music. The values in the jazz part are in my opinion too low. Example: A rare Gennett in E condition (the book indicates the value of records in E) is very very hard to find and therefore the value is much higher than in the book. I have always paid more for a rare record than the value indicated in the book.
However, the guide gives you an idea of the value of a rare record and this makes the book a must for any serious collector.
A good additional guide for 78s and obscure titles.......2006-12-27
If you collect records by well-known artists or mainstream recordings from the 1960s-1990s,
this probably isn't the guide for you.
But, if you have 78s or obscure labels or titles, this is a great
addition to your record guides. When I was collecting more
intensely a few years back, I found that I ended up using about 6 different guides,
and subscribed to Goldmine magazine, a tabloid out of Iola, Wisconsin. Out of all of these guides together,
I could usually find out what I wanted to know about the records I was collecting.
When it came to 78s, though, this was the book that I always turned to for
information. I didn't always agree with what I saw listed as the value ( of course, I thought my records were worth more. Just look at all the guides till you find a price you like! ) but there
is a lot of good info here. It's worth looking at just to see the record labels
in the front of the book. I found that I could search through stacks of records while hunting armed with the knowledge of what were labels to zero in on for Blues, Jazz and the like, and if I could get the records
cheaply enough, it was often worth the gamble to buy them and listen to unfamiliar artists once I got home.
If you just want a price guide for mainstream music, there are better guides, like:
Jerry Osborne's Official Price Guide to Records,
Goldmine has good guides on 45s and records in general, and if you collect Doo-Wop try "Doo-Wop, the forgotten third of Rock 'n Roll" by Dr. Anthony J. Gribin & Dr. Matthew M. Schiff, and Warman's has guides just on Elvis and the Beatles (two separate books.)
The Official Price Guide to Records has 13 pages on the Beatles compared to a handful of entries in les Docks' book. But, on the other hand, I found a price for a 45 by the 1950s R&B group, the "Go-boys," featuring Dudley Callicutt, in Les' book and nothing in the other guides.
It's all a matter of what you're looking for. And if you have an artist's name, there's an index in the back.
A Worthless Reference Source........Save your money.......2002-02-08
As the other reviews noted, organizing the listings by musical genre instead of artist or record label was really dumb. If that weren't bad enough, the author also makes the mistake of assuming that all or most of his readers should be "knowledgeable collectors", and for that reason, common records are not included at all.
I picked up the first record from my stack, a yellow label MGM, by Billy Eckstine. What genre is he or she? Don't know. After looking through all sections, I never found this record or artist listed. Is it common or rare? I still don't know, and this book helped not at all.
From the introduction: "Following are brief explanations of terms and symbols used by collectors and dealers. Some are forthright and succinct. Others, attempting to define the various styles and idioms of music, are somewhat amorphous, if not downright evasive."....wasn't this supposed to be an informative 'Record Guide'?
Also from the introduction: "Those seeking information about hit or 'charted' records should consult other references". This reviewer agrees.
6th Ed. - Disappointment.......2002-01-27
Fine reference but horribly organized. The author has chosen to structure the book by genre of music and not by artist. In doing so, a particular artist may be found in several different parts of the book depending on what particular record you're looking for. Not only is this cumbersome, it's fairly subjective based on the author's definitions - e.g. is this Rockabilly or country? Is this Blues or Rhythm and Blues? The author admits in the Organization of This Book section that; "The inclusion of a given artist in a particular section is often a matter of arbitrary choice." Additionally, if you have an artist that you're not familiar with, say the Bang Boys for instance...where do you look? Jazz & Big Band? Blues? Country? Rock& Roll?, etc. It is a frustrating experience. To add insult to injury, there is no index to the book (which was the saving grace in the 5th Ed..)
The label references are very good and the actual valuations are beneficial and fairly representative of the marketplace. If the book were re-organized for easier browsing, it would be indispensable.....as it is, it's so-so.
Not What It's Cut-Out to Be.......2001-06-30
Although this guide is recommended by a few 78 RPM record collectors on the internet, I found it full of omissions. Older recordings in my our collection, even though their historical value may be significant to some, are not listed at all. It seems that some of these performers are unknown by the author. Look up John McCormack with your search engine, for instance. Many fans of the records by this famous Irish tenor, particularly in Ireland, would be appalled. The label examples are fun, but are not worth the full new price of the book. Buy it used from Amazon if you want to check it out. Otherwise leave your searches on the internet for other books more beneficial to your collection. For later recordings, or those of the '50s, check out 'Rockin' Records'.

Spring greetings and summer wishes, autumn notes and winter cheer--learn how to make imaginative cards for every season and any occasion with the 50 projects in The Card Shop by Sandra Lounsbury Foose. Start with simple fold-and-cut designs to create snowmen, animals, witches, and more. Move on to more involved cutouts depicting Santas, snowflakes, kitchen items, hamburgers, and pizza slices. Then try easy, three-dimensional constructions like sleds, houses, and sailboats. Complete templates and detailed instructions demystify the process, though beginners may be frustrated by the sometimes confusing directions. But the wide range of events covered, along with ideas for other types of notes (gift tags, invitations, announcements, bookmarks), plus a list of suggested messages for all sorts of cards, makes this a nice choice for those who enjoy bright, country-style designs and who have some patience with a craft knife. --Amy Handy

Many are three-dimensional pieces, such as the pretty origami kite card announcing a summer picnic. Other novel ideas include the fold-out witch for Halloween and the teddy-in-a-bassinet to celebrate a new baby. Each one is easy to make and appealing to all ages. With paper, glue, scissors, and imagination, each card can be completed in minutes.
Customer Reviews:
Just as Dazzling as the Title Claims.......2006-04-22
The instructions are excellent, all of the templates are included, and the end results are attractive & unique. You don't have to be an exceptional artist to make these cards, and basic supplies (rubber cement, scissors, & colored paper) can be used for all of the patterns. You can also easily vary the designs with different patterns/types of paper or add that extra touch with lettering. The cards can be used for all occasions or no occasion, and cover all four seasons and major holidays. A wonderful addition to any library--I would recommend it for all skill levels.
Just used it to make all my holiday cards!.......2003-12-18
I have made about half of the cards in this book at least once since I bought it in January, and I look forward to making some more. In fact, I just finished making all of my Christmas and Hanukkah cards from patterns in this book, and they came out pretty well. Most of the patterns lend themselves to personal touches, which keeps things interesting and allows you to get more mileage out of them.
I do, however, recommend a light box for making these cards. I got a cheap one for about $10. The light box gives you two advantages: one, you don't have to cut up your xerox copies of the patterns, which prevents you from losing the little pieces. Two, it's much easier to line up the placement of cutting lines, embellishments and the like.
The only complaint I have about this book is that some of the cards come out a little small. To remedy this, I set the copier to an enlargement setting, resulting in larger patterns.
I look forward to getting much more use out of this book!
An excellent, well-rounded set of project ideas.......2001-03-12
Card givers desiring a more personal touch than Hallmarks or the computer can produce will find Sandra Lounsbury Foose's Card Shop packed with fresh new ideas for handmade cards. From a basic introduction to paper and supplies for ideas for year-round greetings, Card Shop includes ornament cards and bookmarks and provides an excellent, well-rounded set of project ideas.
Book Description
The "house" is one of American folk art's most popular and prominent motifs, and this beautiful, authoritative volume is the first of its kind to explore this symbol in all major folk art media. The book is also a record of America's lost architectural heritage-- many of the buildings featured are no longer standing.
Each chapter focuses on a specific folk art category and includes an in-depth, detailed introduction to the subject followed by a comprehensive gallery of images accompanied by extended captions that provide a symbolic, social, and economic context for each piece. Every folk art format is featured: quilts, rugs, needlework, furnishings, paintings, and drawings, among others. The unique folk art objects presented are culled from dealers' wares, unpublished private and corporate collections, auction houses, and major folk art museums in the country.
With its wealth of photography and insightful text, and introduction by Gerard C. Wertkin, Director of the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, Home Sweet Home is an excellent resource for collectors, history and nostalgia buffs, and those interested in Americana.
Customer Reviews:
A great read as well as a beautiful display book........2001-09-28
I recently bought Home Sweet Home because I am interested in American art and crafts, and it is full of beautiful pieces of art. More importantly, though, I really felt like I was learning about the lives and history of early Americans, through their artwork. Especially in an uncertain time like this, it was somehow touching to get such an intimate view into how early Americans depicted their homes and communities. I'm planning to buy several copies for Christmas presents!

Break Out Your Creativity!.......2006-07-02
Are you crafty? Handy with a hammer? Have an itch to re-design your room into a space that you'd actually like to hang out in? Clea Hantman's got your number - and all the detailed instructions you could want in I Wanna Re-Do My Room.
And the best part? All the projects in this book - from new curtains to new furniture for your cool new habitat - can be completed by teens on the cheap. How can your mom complain when your room makeover comes so inexpensively?
Heavily illustrated by Azadeh Houshyar with fun and kitschy drawings, the projects are mostly fast and easy. Each one lists all the elements needed so you can be prepared before you start and many of them can be accomplished with items you have lying around the house (for instance, there's the pillow made out of a t-shirt).
All of the projects are fun, heavy on style, and can be individually modified to capture your own style and spirit. Now, why wasn't this out when I was a teen? Shoot - scratch that - I can use some of the ideas now!
Recommended for teens looking to spice up their surroundings in an affordable and fun way. Targeted mainly toward girls, boys could even find some projects they might like to do (they just might not advertise it). Suitable for teens and tweens 9 or 10 and up, but very applicable also to college students on a budget (and with bland dorm rooms).

The origins of the Arts and Crafts movement.......2004-02-25
These are three of the major works of the Arts and Crafts Movement beginning with the fabulous Red House which brought together many of William Morris' ideas in shaping this movement. Philip Webb worked with Morris to create this resplendent design, inspired by the earlier neo-Gothic movement, but pointing the direction to a new architecture. There are many fine color photos as well as key details of the house that give you a very good impression of this seminal work in the English Freestyle.
Lethaby and Lutyens carried the movement forward. They, along with C.F.A. Voysey, were the leading figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and shown here are their key works. The Melsetter House is a tour-de-force, stripped of most of the Neo-Gothic trappings, this house offers a more refined version of the English Manor House of the late 19th century. The site plan shows the beautiful configuration that Lethaby came up with to anchor the house on the large site with its radiating gardens. There are many beautifully detailed drawings, including molding profiles of the enormous fireplaces, which graced this mansion. But probably the most evocative photos and drawings are those of the chapel which was an extension of the main house.
Lutyens was a very eclectic architect, drawing on many classical themes as well as Neo-Gothic themes. Goddards represents a closer adherance to the Arts and Crafts Style, but in the introduction the author gives the reader a wide sampling of Lutyens' style. Goddards has elements of timber architecture and is more earthy in its appearance. The skewed wings open up the courtyard to the countryside beyond, and Lutyen's richly detailed chimneys rise as strong tower elements in the otherwise horizontal house. Lots of wonderful sections and detail drawings to give the reader a full impression of this manor house.
A Steal at Twice the Price!.......1999-11-27
This book, like Arts and Crafts Houses II, covers only three houses, in this case William Morris's Red House (designed by Phillip Webb), William Richard Lethaby's Melsetter House, and Sir Edward Luteyns' Goddards, but it covers them beautifully and thoroughly. There are site plans, floor plans, elevations, beautiful black and white photos and stunning color photos, significant introductory essays, and lists of references. This is a beautiful book at an amazing price.

Book Description
A family of five. Healthy environment. Loving, supportive parents. The kids grow, one follows the Lord but the other two-for now-are far from His presence. What went wrong? Were Mom and Dad too permissive, too authoritarian, uninvolved? How can parents raise kids who truly love Jesus? Best-selling authors Norm Wright and Gary Oliver point out that in the ninth grade, 80% of Protestant kids polled said they believe that Jesus is the risen Savior. By the time they turned 18, however, only 20 percent said they were still committed to Christ. Raising Kids to Love Jesus is an in-depth road map for concerned parents wanting to give their children the tools it takes to emerge from their youth as passionate lovers of Christ.
Customer Reviews:
Timely book for Christian parents raising kids today........1999-11-02
Very practical and timely book for any Christian parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher...anyone involved in kids' lives. The authors are very much in tune with the dynamics of Christian families and they touch on every important point that you will want to know. You will grow in your own walk with Christ and will be a living, breathing example to your kids after reading this book and following its guidelines. Very inspiring book, very thought-provoking, and a wonderful "handbook" for anyone desiring to lead little ones to Christ. I highly recommend it both as a mother and as a Sunday school teacher.
