Obscure.......2003-01-09

While the introduction and footnotes were very well edited, I did struggle through the actual journals themselves. This could be attributed to Nelson's writing style, my unfamiliarity with Lake Superior geography and/or the plethora of French nomenclature (which can generate confusion for some). Overall, the journals are insightful of survival strategies and day to day existence in the fur trade years of 1802-04 in northern Wisconsin. Nelson, who was only fifteen when joining the XY Company, was a keen observer of Ojibwa Indian customs, the interrelationships between company men and his immediate surroundings. If the writing of the journals had more continuity, it would have been an enjoyable read.

Excellent information and advice........2003-12-30

I own and operate my own S-Corporation, and I found this book to be chockful of invaluable information and advice for setting it up and running it. I strongly recommend the book.

Very Disappointed.......1999-11-25

I was very disappointed with this book. Its cover gives the impression, with bullets, that you will be able to learn several things from the author. For example 1) Using an S Corp for a personal tax shelter. 2) Completely avoid paying any income tax. I bought this book thinking that I would be taken through a step by step process on how to accomplish at least those items highlighted on the books cover. But instead, I was taken through a lot of general information without really being tought how to "do" anything. I believe that the author is knowledgeable, however this book was sold as a "how to" book. It feel way short of that mark.

Confusing, not enough detail.......1999-10-22

HOW TO START YOUR OWN (SUBCHAPTER)S CORPORATION initially deceives the reader into thinking it will be easy to understand, because of the author's folksy style and use of plain language. However, the information in the book is not organized helpfully, nor is it complete. For example, there is one mention of Social Security Tax in the index; upon looking at the correct page for this mention, I found an only an irreverent reference to the possibility that FICA taxes may not be returned to taxpayers in Social Security payments. In the "Summary and Examples" section of Chapter 3, the author states, "...again, the IRS and the Social Security Administration won't like that procedure..." (i.e., taking all S corporation profits as dividend distributions) but I was unable to find where the author had discussed this at all (why say, "again,"?)

Furthermore, an updated edition would be welcome inasmuch as there have been several changes to S Corporation regulations, the most notable being in 1996 when the limit on number of stockholders was changed from 35 to 75, a substantial increase indeed.

Great Book! The book gives super information about the slot car hobby. The information is very basic though, so keep that in mind. Great pictures throughout.

A must have book for the slot car enthusiast.......2002-01-04

This is a "must have" book for anyone either getting into slot cars or returning to slot cars as an adult. Robert Schleicher has an obvious passion for "true to scale" slot cars and doesn't let that passion get in the way of writing clearly. The book is a great source of information for the home slot car enthusiast particularly for 1/32 scale and to a lesser degree HO. He is not into "hopping up" slot cars and even states that it is more fun to win a race between equally matched cars using luck and skill than to win having the faster car. He does however, cover how to customize and optimize as well as performance match "ready to race" slot cars. The pictures are spectacular while the layouts and cars are worthy of the pictures. The book has quite a few typographical errors but weather you want to collect slot cars, build a detailed layout, both or just assemble your slot car set on the floor and race, this is a great book.

A must have for racers and collectors.......2001-11-25

"Racing and Collecting Slot Cars" is a book for every slot car racer and collector. It's primary focus is HO and 1/32 scale slot cars; however, the information provided applies to all scales. This book is well layed out. Each chapter exploring a specific aspect of these table top racers. The photos (many in color) are EXCELLENT. Best book around on the topic. No book is perfect, but Mr. Schleicher does a great job.

Racing Cars is a book that is a[n] o.k. book. The only thing is it wasn't long enough. The book was still a good book. It could be a little more interesting. But I think it was a good book.

Aurora Slot Cars.......2004-10-08

Do not buy this book to "valuate" your cars. This book is all about the history of Aurora. If you are interested in the company, the men, the circumstances, then buy this book. As far as I know it's the only book of its kind and there in lies the value. A great product (T-jets), a unique company (Aurora), an interesting history and well told. I love this book and it's worth every penny.

No real insight into Aurora from this greenburg book.......2001-08-25

This book has nice pictures, just not enough of them. It gives no insight into Aurora or the rationalization of the pricing valuation structure. After attending Slot Car Swap Meets for the past several years, the book is not even close to the valuation criteria used by diehard collectors. If you use this book to valuate your cars, you will invariable over value common cars, and under value the true rare ones. By the way unless the car is extremly rare, it must be in new condition (not just mint for the age), to have any true collector value at all. Mint for age cars are worthless.

A work of art for the slot car enthusiast and collector!.......1998-06-24

The work of Mr. Graham is one of the most complete works that I have read to date.

Graham begins the work with an excellent review of the beginnings of slot cars. The progression into the history of Aurora Plastics Company is a smooth and flawless transition. Graham holds no punches in this book when reviewing mistakes that Aurora made during its years. There are numerous pictures depicting almost any "Vibrator", "ThunderJet", "AFX", and large scale cars (1/32, 1/24) that Aurora produced while owned and operated primarily in the U.S.

This book also has a fair price guide in the back of the book. I think some information is outdated as far as value is concerned, but it is still a good baseline.

Overall, this book is a handy tool to identify your Aurora vehicles and to use as a collectors guide. It is well worth the money to purchase and would even make a good gift for that "slot-head" in your family.

I also recommend getting John A. Clark's book mentioned in the reference to this book. Together you couldn't ask for better information on Aurora!

I love this step by step guide to prepare yourself, spouse and unborn child for birth and your lifetime together. I particulary liked reading the inspiring stories from parents about their unborn children and I enjoy saying the poem-like prayers printed in this book. I think it's wonderful that we can start having quality time with our children even before they are born! I also think it's important to take the opportunity to positively affect a life at this most impressionable time. I truely recommend this book to any expectant parent, couples who are trying to conceive as well as anybody who would like to be a parent in the future.

Inspirational for parents or parents to be, spirtitual and unique.......2005-11-08

I am a young person who is soon to be married. I read this book in the desire to learn more about the spiritual aspect of conceiving and giving birth to children, when that does happen. It did not dissappoint. The book contains teachings on how you can change your genes (yes, that's right!), purify your mind and focus on such beauty that it manifests in your unborn child. Also talked about using spiritual energy/holy spirit/violet flame to clear emotional, mental and physical blocks. I liked the real accounts most of all, particularly of parents who had experiences with their unborn child. An interesting book.

Disappointed by adoption references.......2000-05-09

I bought this book when I first became pregnant. Unfortunately, I skimmed it far too quickly. I did not realize how prejudiced the authors were toward adoption. Because this book had emphasized in its marketing the idea that an unborn child's spiritual life can be molded while in the womb, I thought that the authors would understand how vital the mother/child bond is and how both mother and child suffer when it is broken. How surprised I was to read the chapter "Chance Plays No Part in Adoption." A study is quoted stating that some adopted "children said that they had now known their biological mother or father in a past life. But they did have karmic ties" with their adopters. I thought of this quote and of the desperate longing that I had as a child to find my own natural mother. We were separated by adoption for over thirty years. After I found her, she said that she'd told me before we left the maternity home that we'd find each other one day. Perhaps it was her telling me we'd find each other that made me so doggedly pursue finding her. Whatever the reason, I can't believe that the same God that would create a child in its mother's womb would condone its separation from that mother. Adoption is a social convenience for infertile couples. To say the biological parents must give away their children to fulfill some karmic law denies the bonds between mother and child that the authors tout in the rest of the book. It's curious to me how the authors can reconcile the wonder of nature's conception with the unnatural and abusive act of adoption. Many mothers, children, and fathers have suffered because of adoption. I would hope that this book would encourage keeping mothers and children together and upholding the sacredness of motherhood instead of suggesting that some mothers are merely vehicles to give other women the illusion of having their own children. Shame on the authors for not consulting people negatively affected by adoption before presenting their views.

A Beautiful, Spiritually Inspiring Guide for Future Parents.......1999-05-31

As a married women of 29, who wants the best for my future children, I bought this book wanting to know how to facilitate a relationship with my child's soul. This book answered many questions, and explained how to use spiritual energy and "The Violet Fire" for the good of the child's soul and physical wellbeing. This book has prayers to help you all along the way- from before conception to after birth. The initial chapters dealt with karma, reincarnation, and the mission of your child's soul. I also ejoyed the chapter about how to convey beauty and virtue through music and art. This book also explains the importance of loving communication with your unborn child, and meditation. I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the souls who will become their children- and how to do what is spiritually, emotionaly, physically, and mentally loving of them before they are born.

There are many good books on prenatal care and even education in the womb. What we liked about this book was that it focuses on the spiritual aspects of preparing your new baby for the world he or she will enter. The meditations and visualizations will help you to create a deep, spiritual bond between you and your baby.

COULD'VE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER!.......2003-12-26

This book has its moments, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone. It is full of errors, contradictions, omissions, misspellings, etc. Having previously read another of Billy Harry's books,("The Ultimate Beatles Encyclopedia") I knew that he wasn't too keen on hiring a good proofreader, but the Lennon book is just too much!!

The ultimate book on the magnificent John.......2003-07-21

Everything Bill Harry publishes on the Beatles is always a high quality, well-researched effort and this is no exception. It's not hyperbole to say that this book contains virtually everything you ever wanted to know about Lennon; the details are prodigious, and it spans over 1,000 pages of text. It's an almost day by day chronicle of Lennon's life from 1940 until his tragic death in 1980. Casual fans might suffocate under the weight of all this info, but for Lennon fanatics, like me, this is nirvana.

The book is equally divided between personal material about John, his relationships, marriages, divorce, and two sons, and his professional career. His partnership with Paul is explored in exhaustive and fascinating detail and no discernible bias can be seen. Bill Harry has written about all of the Beatles but one can never tell which one is his favorite. That's a notable strength in his writing, he has no agenda or axe to grind, he just presents the glorious facts of the Fab Four. The index is easy to follow and cross-referenced so you can easily find what you're looking for.

If you are a serious fan of John Lennon, this is an indispensible guide to his songwriting, personality and his life. If only he had been allowed more than 40 years on earth, how many more classic songs would he have written? Sadly, we will never know, but this celebration of his life is as good as it gets.
