Book Description
This is a collection of essays written by a team of seasoned literary experts critically assessing the significance of the works of Ali A. Mazrui, one of Africa's most accomplished writers in modern times.
Customer Reviews:
Superb: A Must Read.......2001-06-17
As a former student of Dr. Mazrui, and a current professor of African Studies, I can vouch for two things: 1) Dr. Mazrui's contributions to the study of Africa have been immense. He is widely respected. 2) His family has no links to slave-holders. These allegations are false.
As the book is a collection of essays, it is an easy read. Students and experts of Africa and global politics will find his writings both thoughtful and unique.
Celebrate Mazrui - why?.......2000-09-10
Ali Mazrui has got one string on his (by now) very old banjo: Islam is good and beneficial for Africa. Mazrui even claims that islam is indigenous to Africa due to the geographic bridge between the M. East and Africa at Suez. In all of his writings, Mazrui downplays islam's cultural genocide which has created Sudanese, Mauretanians, Somalis etc who think they are and claim to be "Arabs". This mental enslavement is only matched by the (continued) slavery of Africans by Arabs. Mazrui always avoids this and instead tries to talk up Islam as "African". He has got a very pernicious agenda in this sense. His scholarship is alos weak and not well thought through.
Exposed.......1999-11-09
Is it true that the Mazruis were slavers? This puts a bit of a twist to Ali Mazrui's claims to be a spokesperson for Africa and especially his call for reparations for Africa!
Whipped into shape.......1999-06-21
Wasn't the Mazrui family a notorious slaving clan that the British had to fight with in the 19C to stop them selling Africans to Arabia? How ironic that one of their descendants is now celebrated as an African scholar! As for "Mazruiana" - whatever.....
A modest and long over due recognition of excellence........1999-05-07
An excellent collection of articles about a living great world thinker. Of course, people who are familiar with Mazruis's extensive work know that Mazuriana is much more deeper and broader than the collection of articles on Mazrui. Having known little about the ccontrubutors to the collection, my decision to read the book was based merely on its subject. Now I am convinced that it was worth the while.

Book Description
They say life imitates art. And for author Nic Papalia that saying rings true ? even though his real-life adventures often make those of the fiction world pale in comparison. The two stories in this book are very different. Yet they are both true ? and very inspir- ational. The Boomerang Trail As an introverted 19-year-old farm worker, Papalia was once told that he needed to broaden his mind and ?have a look at the world.? So, he did just that. In South Africa, he ended up in the middle of a civil war in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He was mistaken for a spy in Zambia and arrested. He was stricken with cholera in India. In Mexico, he was shot at in a bar. And in San Francisco, he experienced life as a penniless street vagrant. And in Central America, he risked his life to shoot a short documentary. But that didn?t stop him from climbing to the top of the world ? Mt. Kilimanjaro. Now in his early forties, Paplia chronicles his ten years as a globe-hopper in this compelling story. Who Cares? Now living in Perth, Western Australia, Papalia works as a carer for clients with disabilities. Who Cares? shows the different struggles encountered by both carers and clients in this honest, compassionate and often funny story.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Strategic Planning Book.......2006-08-01
While browsing through the strategy books, I saw it by chance. I went through the table of contents, hoping it might turn out to be the right one for me as a startup strategy manager. It indeed turned out to be an excellent book on strategic planning in respects of coverage, sequencing of chapters and examples given. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to make progress in strategic planning in a relatively short time.
I had to buy this book for a class.......2006-03-02
So, it wasn't exactly an "optional" purchase. It's a little dry, like a text book usually is. But information is overall good.
Applied Strategic Planning by Leonard D Goodstein, Timothy M.......2005-05-19
In Applied Strategic Planning, the authors give a comprehensive step-by-step guide to conducting applied strategic planning. They clearly demonstrate organisations' need for strategic planning. The book is different from other strategic planning models in some significant ways. The major differences are in the values scan, organisational culture, strategic business modelling and integrating business and functional plans. The authors emphasise the importance of application considerations and environmental monitoring as on-going processes throughout the planning period. The authors produced a high quality book that is an important reference source whenever I need to undertake strategic planning.
The book provides the reader with an overall understanding of the process of applied strategic planning and the required steps and technology for using the model in a strategic planning process. The strategic planning model covers application and implementation from the inception of the plan to the post-implementation phase, making it very practical.
The model involves nine sequential steps as well as two continuous functions, namely environmental monitoring and application considerations, that are involved at each of the sequential phases. The sequential steps are planning to plan, followed by values scan, then mission formulation followed by strategic business modelling. Performance audit and gap analysis follow, these two being different aspects of a single phase. The last three phases are integrating action plans, contingency planning and implementation.
I read the book because I would like to increase my proficiency in and knowledge of practical strategic planning and to sharpen my consultancy skills. The book is very practical and easy to follow. As a consultant, I should be able to use the methodology in the course to manage the planning process.
Applied strategic planning provides an appealing model for transforming organisations. The model is future focused and leadership driven. It involves all people in an organisation. It produces a plan that is detailed, comprehensive, understood and accepted, and has the potential to generate energising force to drive the transformation of an organisation.
After going through the book, I feel confident that I could act as a consultant for any organisation.
Very good, plus..........2003-06-24
This is a very good book. In addition to this, I recommend "Strategic Organizational Change" by Michael Beitler.
A sea of knowledge, one centimeter deep.......2000-08-25
This book widely specifies WHAT to do in strategic planning but it hardly explains HOW to do it. What I expect when reading this kind of topics is not the concept but rather the application procedures and practical techniques for implementing those concepts in an effective and innovative way. In consequence, I found this book repetitive and non productive for planning specialists. However it may serve a lot to beginners and students.

Customer Reviews:
Caricature Carving from Head to Toe: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Capturing Expression and Humor in Wood by Dave Stetson.......2007-05-20
Dave Stetson is probably one of the top caricature carvers in the nation. He views the world around him in a unique way. His approach to teaching woodcarving stems from a desire to teach the student beyond the project, to enable the student to be more creative and carve on his own. This book allows the student to do that. The explanations are concise, with step by step photos and explanations. The photo gallery has a wonderfully diverse subject matter. And Dave's style of teaching is loaded with humor. It's a great addition to my woodcarving book library.

Book Description
Barnet had already made a name for himself in local amateur theater circles when the First Corps of Cadets, a volunteer militia of young upper-class Boston businessmen who sought money to build an armory as protection against feared immigrant uprisings, hired the middle-aged father of five to stage fundraisers to erect the armory, known today as the Park Plaza Castle. Dubbed the "Extravaganza King" for his ever more elaborate productions, held annually in Boston from 1891 to 1906, Barnet almost single-handedly managed the lavish musical farces and Mother Goose burlesques, acting as librettist, director, stage manager, and costume designer. The male cadets, including several Harvard graduates trained in the Hasty Pudding tradition, played all of the roles in these overblown affairs, and Barnet himself starred as Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492, his most famous work. Donning dresses and wigs for the female parts, the hefty, muscular leading ladies raised laughter rather than eyebrows from the audiences of prominent Bostonians who attended the shows.
In this lively and lighthearted account, Barnet's great-granddaughter, Anne Alison Barnet, reclaims the little known story of the Cadet Theatricals and the creative force behind the huge productions, many of which later toured the country and had Broadway runs. Drawing on a trove of photographs, scrapbooks, and family memorabilia, she traces Barnet's life and the colorful history of the Cadet shows. While Barnet gained national fame for his long run of successes in Boston, his fortunes reversed after moving in 1908 to New York City, where he failed to adapt his talents to evolving musical theater tastes and fell into professional obscurity.
Barnet's captivating book transports the reader back to the turn of the last century, a time when extravaganzas-musical theater with enormous casts, elaborate scenery and costumes, special effects, and improbable, lightweight plots-were the rage in popular entertainment. It rescues Robert Barnet's astonishing career and illuminates his significant contribution to the rich heritage of American musicals.

Fascinating missing pieces in show biz picture puzzle.......2004-11-17
EXTRAVAGANZA KING: Robert Barnet and the Boston Musical Theatre
by Anne Alison Barnet (2004, Northeastern University Press, Boston, MA ISBN 1-55553-611-5)
In the 1890s and the 1900s, Robert Barnet brought together Boston Brahmins, Bankers, Bohemians and Billy Dalton to create a series of successful extravaganzas featuring young men of fine families cavorting in female drag to the benefit of Boston’s own First Corps of Cadets and their ambitions for an Armory. Designed by one of their own, the architect William Gibbons Preston, they built, show by show and wall by wall, “a rusticated granite fortress with a six story head-house, a two-hundred-foot long drill hall, and fortress like details: triple doors to defend against mob attack, a drawbridge and a light well that looked like a moat.” The fear of the day was not Islamists, communists, anarchists but immigrants—-especially Irish Catholics.
The author, Ms. Alison Barnet, is the great granddaughter of Robert Barnet, the man whose annual extravaganzas raised the money to complete the bastion of Boston’s Back Bay where, in its quirky glory, it still stands at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Arlington Street. Ms. Barnet writes with elegance and subtle humor. Unlike run-of the-mill biographies of family members, she writes neither to exalt nor vilify. She is removed in time, circumstance and relation from her subject and takes us along as she pieces together the story of a man who was bound to Boston but would have succeeded on Broadway. A number of his shows were staged on Broadway: Excelsior, Jr., Jack and the Beanstalk, Three Little Lambs, Miss Pocahontas, My Lady, Up to Date, Miss Simplicity, The Show Girl or the Magic Cap, 1492 and Tabasco, but even the shows that went no further than Boston were covered by the New York drama critics.
Too often the history of show business and the stage is confined to the goings-on in New York City. Boston was home to the Fox-Howard clan, the birthplace of vaudeville and the stage for all manner of presentations from lecture series to dime store curio museums to classic and contemporary drama. Extravaganza King fills in missing pieces about the history of the American stage, and its appeal should extend well beyond city limits.
The cast members for Mr. Barnet’s extravaganzas were cadets, veterans of Harvard College’s Hasty Pudding shows rather than armed conflicts. Occasionally a ‘ringer’ made his way into the cast. One was Billy Dalton, a young man who liked to dress as a girl and entertain the two-fisted patrons of Butte, Montana’s dance halls. His father banished Billy to Boston, which it must be allowed was not much of a punishment. He entered dancing school where he soon shined, and he was hired to perform in several of Barnet’s extravaganzas. Young master Dalton, encouraged by reviews and applause, changed his name to Julian Eltinge in 1903, went to Manhattan to play musical comedy and vaudeville as a female impersonator and eventually had a Broadway theatre named for him.
Ms. Barnet brings various Boston amateurs and professionals back for a final bow, and traces her great grandfather’s arc of success and eventual decline through the 1910s into 20 years of obscurity.
By sketching the plots and production numbers of various Barnet shows and tracing their incubation and production, Ms Barnet She fills a void that statistics cannot. This is a wryly told and useful book for theatre buffs.
A lively and fascinating true tale.......2004-09-07
Extravaganza King: Robert Barnet And Boston Musical Theater by Anne Alison Barnet (writer, researcher, public speaker, and the great-grandaughter of Robert Barnet) is the biographical story of a remarkable man and which will bring him out of an undeserved obscurity by documenting his singular accomplishments and contributions to the history of American musical theatre. Robert Barnet (1853-1933) was a successful sugar merchant who wrote and directed incredibly popular musical theatricals for the First Corps of Cadets, a volunteer militia of young, upper-class Boston businessmen seeking money for an armory to use in defense against feared immigrant revolts or riots. In a tradition reminiscent of Shakespeare, men played all the roles, and Barnet himself was known to take upon the role of Queen Isabella of Spain in "1492", his most famous work. Black-and-white photographs, a wealth of information from scrapbooks and family memorabilia, extensive research and more follow Barnet's spectacular successes, and eventual enduring failures, when he moved in 1908 to New York City but was unable to adapt his talents to people's changing tastes in musical entertainment. A lively and fascinating true tale.
very entertaining!.......2004-07-19
This is a funny book about an almost forgotten form of entertainment. It's hard to imagine the current governor of Massachusetts attending live entertainment featuring men dressed as women, but that's what happened more than 100 years ago. Nor is it typical to associate the Victorian era with men dressed in drag. In addition to being a readable and amusing account of theatrical events, Barnet's book is a terrific look at the people and places of Boston's past.
I couldn't put it down.......2004-07-01
This isn't a topic I would normally be interested in but Ms Barnet writes so engagingly that I couldn't put the book down until I'd read the whole thing. The story of her great-grandfather is like a visit to another time and place. A very interesting time and place. And I loved the way the author's own humor kept shining through the narrative.

Book Description
George Rublee (1868-1957), was an eastern establishment lawyer and corporate liberal who made a significant contribution to economic reform legislation on the state and national levels during the progressive era. He was also involved in a number of important international events from 1917 to 1939. Despite his achievements, he has been largely overlooked. In this first biography of Rublee, McClure contends that any understanding of the history of the Federal Trade Commission and of U.S. foreign relations in World War I and the interwar period is incomplete without an understanding of Rublee's experiences. Rublee's influence on domestic policy includes his role as advisor to New Hampshire governor Robert Bass, his influence in the development of Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 New Nationalism platform, and his conversion of Woodrow Wilson to a Bull Moose approach to antitrust with the creation of the FTC in 1914. His contribution to international relations ranges from his participation on the almost forgotten Allied Maritime Transport Council; to his success in bringing the US into a consultative pact with Great Britain and France at the 1930 London Naval Conference, to his courageous role as director of the controversial Intergovernmental Committee, created at the 1938 Evian Conference to deal with the German Jewish refugee crisis.
