On my KEEPER shelf. Spring of 1773 in England. Lady Barbara Maxwell, a confirmed Englishwoman, is about to be married off - against her wishes - to Rebel American Alan Maxwell. This is the story of their romance and the Revolutionary war that was the background of their story. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially to romance readers that are history buffs also...like me.
A Family Saga..........2001-08-21
The Rebel and the Rose starts in the Spring of 1773 in England. Lady Barbara Maxwell, a confirmed Englishwoman, is about to be married off - against her wishes - to Rebel American Alan Maxwell. This book is different from the Regency romances that Joan Wolf usually writes. It is more of a romantic, family saga. Beginning with Barbara and Alan's courtship in England, the book takes us to America as the first shot is fired, through the long and bitter Revolutionary war, to the end when Barbara and Alan have been married for over 15 years. It is not only a journey through American history, but a journey through one couple's marriage - a couple brought up in two different lands, believing in two different governments. Barbara and Alan's marriage parallels the war - it's rocky beginnings, it's total isolation, it's eventual uneasy peace and finally its acceptance and love. This is an excellent book that I would recommend not only to romance readers, but also history lovers.

From a Privileged Life to That Of a Spy........2005-09-03
In 1857, Rose was described by a jealous Northern woman as "she looked fity or seventy." That's me sometimes. She was on trial in San Francisco where her husband was a lawyer. She might have passed for thirty-five. She was asked "How old are you?" She answered with dignified finality -- "Of sufficient age to testify." She was the Ethel Rosenberg of the Civil War on the Southern side, of course.
Her Oriental Hotel on Market Street was a noted gathering place for the Southerners. Among the generals she met there were Johnston, Sherman, Scott and McDowell. Some of their graves are includedat at Shiloh in southwest Tennessee. There in San Francisco, there were polka cotillions and the Southerners lived akin to the way they did in Washington, D.C. She made trips back and forth, carrying messages, and became known as a Confederate spy. She was ambitious and wend a bit wild after the death of her husband in a tragic accident. She found her Waterloo on the ocean.
Seven years later, in 1864, she looked years younger in looks as she sailed on the Condor from England to the Confederate States. Rose had often said she would glady die for the Confederacy, and she drown in the ship wreck in a storm. Ishbel Ross was no kin to my buddy, William Charles Ross who was in Knoxville from 1956-62. He was a vast influence on my life. Ross wrote biographies about many famous people, so I am surprised to see REBEL ROSE as one of them.

In April 1865 the Civil War was over for most Americans, including the more than 600,000 soldiers, North and South, who died from wounds or disease. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and much of his administration had fled Richmond, accompanied by an escort of cavalry, various hangers-on, and all that was left of the treasury.
With the Davis party was navy paymaster, James A. Semple. He was entrusted with $86,000 in gold coin and bullion and disappeared into the night. The treasure was secured in the false bottom of a carriage.
The Rebel and the Rose reveals for the first time what happened to the Confederate gold, until now a mystery. This historically accurate story is more than the accounting of a missing treasury. It is the story of a man on the run who stashes the gold and seeks to escape capture by fleeing through a devastated South swarming with Federal troops.
Ultimately, Semple takes refuge in the North with Julia Gardiner Tyler, the widow of former U.S. President John Tyler and stepmother of Semple's estranged wife, Letitia.
The Rebel and the Rose focuses on the symbiotic bond that develops between Semple ("the Rebel") and Tyler ("the Rose"). With well-documented detail, Wesley Millett and Gerald White examine Semple's growing passion for Julia, the fury of Letitia over her husband's relationship with the former first lady (and her stepmother), and the concerted effort by members of the Tyler family, even today, to disguise the history of the Semples and the Tylers.

A Sad personal Memoir and an attack on the gifted.......2003-11-21
This book is written in an unusual manner. It is auto-biography
written in an impresionistic fashion, looking back over the author's life from a perspective of flashbacks during a one week diving trip on the Red Sea.
The author, an Hollywood PR agent in earlier days, attempts to add interest to her life and work by comparing and contrasting it with what she learns of Leni Riefenstahl, the 82 Year old (at the time) genius who happened to be on the boat diving with the her.
Leni was the woman who filmed OLYMPIA and THE TRIUMPH of THE WILL during Hitler's Regieme. While initially attracted by Leni's agelessness and charm, the author allows her religion and
politics to change her perceptions to the extent that she
abandons Leni, her "buddy" on a dive, which almost results in Leni's death.
Those familiar with Ayn Rand's work will recognize in the author the sad portrait of a "second rater" in action. Never one to live her own life fully and with zest, she is envious of someone who's lifework is clearly that of genius.
It is also a fascinating study of how perceptions can change in response to thought patterns.

As someone's who's taken "Federal Income Tax" with Professor Tobin, I can say for a fact that he's pretty hilarious. If find this book a lot easier to understand than our textbook. A good guide for any basic federal income tax law school course.

I preordered this book, not really knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. This book is a wonderful collection of photographs of modern blacksmiths works. It has a lot of those smiths who have become known as masters within the community. It was well worth it, just to see what other smiths were doing.

Weston appears to do a very fine job presenting us with the various perspectives of the Villa -- the large living room, entryways, linear wood use, and of course the extraordinary pool and sauna. The integration of text with pictures makes the book accessible to students just beginning to embark on a study of this great Finnish architect.

I am a Person with ADD.......2004-02-22
I have Attention Deficit Disorder. I was diagnosed way back in the 3rd grade. I am 24 years old now ans was on Ritalin all theway up to Concerta until just last year when I found out medication wasn't the answer for my Add thanks to Dr. Kevin Ross Emery and his wonderful Book Managing The Gift. It gives people wonderful insights on how Emotional Coffee Breaks, good diet, good sleeping patterns,and protocols developed by a medical intuition do really help those affected with ADD. Dr. Krvin Ross Emery also goes to schools with parents to talk to teachers about the child's IEP or Individualized Educational Plans and works with thefamily and the student to make sure the child gets the adequate and wonderful education the child deserves instead of labeling the child with a disability. ADD is a gift not a diffability.
People stop putting the book down and open your brains to a new idea and new ways of thinking instead of being so close minded. Maybe Dr. Levy needs to take a closer look at his life and take some courses in ADD or early childhood education itmight help him think better. Get a life Dr. Levy.
Good Book.......2002-05-12
ADD is not just a mental disorder. Those of us who are ADD or know somebody with ADD are very much aware of that. There is so much more to ADD than just a text book definiton. Dr Emery introduces us to a different concept of ADD. I bet most people who are ADD themsleves can relate to many of his ideas.
This is very well written book on the subject of ADD. Many of his ideas and suggestions can still help those people who choose to see ADD as only a negative problem. This book is also set up so that an ADD person can read though it with ease.
ADD is a complicated issue.......2001-01-03
This book contains some interesting ideas, based on Emery's private practice. However, they are offered in a vacuum. The author does not discuss current research, or other alternative practitioners widely known in this field. Can one man's intuition with individual patients carry over in a meaningful way to schools, or other psychologists? If not, where do poor parents go to help their children? Emery has made a contribution here. It will be richer if he develops useable, tested protocols with professionals for widespread application. Ths book, is a starting point. Despite its flaws, I recommend it.
Excellent book for parents of children with ADD.......2000-12-16
In this book Dr. Emery has explored new territory and techniques for managing ADD. He discusses the four levels - physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual - impacted by ADD. "Emotional coffee breaks", using checklists, learning in motion, modification of diet, and timed learning are a few of the strategies explored as alternative approaches to medication. While Dr. Emery recognizes that medication can be useful in some cases, he offers other methods for parents to explore. He offers suggestions to help children with anxiety, shame, and isolation which children with ADD often experience. Steps to help your child, your child's educational rights and additional resources are discussed. Sections of the book deal with adults with ADD too. As a parent of a teenager with ADD I highly recommend this book to parents of ADD children.
Working With, Not Against Attention Defecit.......2000-12-16
Take a 13 year old boy with no self-esteem, no self-confidence, a failure in school, academically and social, started taking Ridlin in hopes to a means with no end; put him with Dr. Ross-Emery, NOT RASS!!, and what do you get?? A-B student, teachers dream student, makes new friends daily, plays any sport that is available at school, even if he is not the best on the team, has become STRUCTURED in his life, does his homework, if OFF Ridlin, takes life as it is, has accepted his own worth, and now thinks he can do anything, which all equals the power one gifted person gave another. Transcending two strikes against them, being Jewish, and being female, a group of Central European Jewish university women of the early 20th century -- who often opted not to marry -- defied conventional expectations when they sought personal self-fulfillment in higher education and then invaded traditional male professions. In a clear, fascinating work, Harriet Freidenreich breaks new ground in her examination of the ramifications of religion and gender in a relatively new research field: Jewish Women's History. The text structures around life cycles and personal in experiences tracking these pioneers as they overcame significant obstacles. Freidenreich skillfully weaves primary sources, incorporating highly revelatory material from personal interviews, questionnaires, published and unpublished memoirs, enhanced by the haunting faces of the subjects in 20 pages of photographs. Some of the women, like Hanna Arendt, became famous. Others, less well known, still made significant contributions. Reading this highly intelligent, scholarly work about our professional foremothers -- intended for educated women to learn about educated women -- provides a most gratifying experience!
A Letter to the Author of Female, Jewish, & Educated.......2002-07-10
I have finished reading your latest book and it has certainly fulfilled what it promised. I learned a great deal from it about the women whom you chose to discuss in your work, about the issues which moved them, about the problems which they had to struggle against and about the historical background of their lives. It also confirmed a suspicion of mine, namely that anti-Semitism was a lesser obstacle than bias against women. So many of the women you write about are fascinating characters and have led colorful lives. I found your presentation lively, entertaining, your scholarship thorough and most impressive. You also show remarkable empathy toward these women.
