Book Description

In 1783 William Findley was at the beginning of a long political career. For the next thirty-four years, until he retired from Congress in 1817, he would serve in some state or national elective office. As the book begins, Findley is on his way to Philadelphia to take his seat in a unique body, the Council of Censors, which had been created by the radical Pennsylvania constitution of 1776. Findley turned out of be a source of great irritation to his political rivals. He was "of his people," a fact that endeared him to the Westmoreland pioneers from whence he came. This book will give the reader an insight into the government of our country at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, not far different from the political problems still being discussed today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars William Findley.......2005-11-15

I agree with A Reader, Findley has long been ignored as an important Founder due to his status as head of the Whitehill, Smilie, Findley JUNTO that argued against the adoption of the Federal Constitution. I am also anxious to read the biography and am hopeful it will suit the subject.

4 out of 5 stars The Significance of William Findley.......2001-07-20

I have not yet read the book, but have the chutzpah to be writing a review of it. Why? Because this is the first full biography of the subject, who may be the most important of the uncelebrated Founders. Or maybe the least celebrated of the important Founders? I hope that the biography is up to the subject. I give it four stars unread, because Findley deserves it.

In the first significant published debate of the new Republic, Findley both invented modern interest-group pluralism (an apercu of Gordon Wood), and provided a far better justification of the Jeffersonian ideal than Jefferson himself ever did. (This was the 1786 debate over the rechartering of the Bank of North America: brilliant polemical fireworks from both Findley and Robert Morris. Tom Paine participated from the sidelines, on the side of Morris and capital.) Findley was, as far as I know, the only realist about the new commercial Republic from we would today call the "left." (Jefferson certainly was not; neither was John Taylor of Caroline. Madison perhaps, although he did not seem troubled by the matter.)

And if that's not enough, Findley invented the committee system of Congress. A mighty politician and political thinker.

        Book Description

In the heroic age of polar exploration, Sir Douglas Mawson stands in the first rank. His Antarctic expeditions of 1911-14 and 1929-31 resulted in Australia's claiming 40 per cent of the sixth continent. The sole survivor of an epic 300-mile trek, Mawson was also a scientist of national stature. His image on banknotes and stamps reflects enduring public esteem. Yet until now there has been no comprehensive, objective biography of this tall, quiet figure.

In this long-awaited, most impressive and readable biography, Philip Ayres not only illuminates Douglas Mawson's many achievements but also enables us to know and understand him as a human being. The book's many illustrations include reproductions of exquisite early colour photographs from the Antarctic expedition of 1911-14.

          Book Description

Survival against the odds, a clipper ship, Ernest Shackleton, the south magnetic pole, Antarctic science, a puppy named Blizzard, and a young woman named Paquita all play roles in this compelling profile of Australia's most famous Antarctic explorer. Carmen Bredeson presents the life of Sir Douglas Mawson from his early fascination with geology to his adventures in Antarctica with Shackleton—leading up to a gripping account of his own scientific expedition to study uncharted parts of the continent. Tension mounts as Mawson sets out from base camp with a small team . . . suffers the loss of his men, dogs, and supplies . . . battles torturous cold with makeshift shelter, little food, and failing body . . . and ultimately—but just barely—makes it back to camp alive. This spellbinding adventure will keep kids turning pages!

                              Book Description

Since the early 1980s there has been an explosion of auditing activity in the United Kingdom and North America. In addition to financial audits there are now medical audits, technology audits, value for money audits, environmental audits, quality audits, teaching audits, and many others. Why has this happened? What does it mean when a society invests so heavily in an industry of checking and when more and more individuals find themselves subject to formal scrutiny? The Audit Society argues that the rise of auditing has its roots in political demands for accountability and control. At the heart of a new administrative style internal control systems have begun to play an important public role and individual and organizational performance has been increasingly formalized and made auditable. Michael Power argues that the new demands and expectations of audits live uneasily with their operational capabilities. Not only is the manner in which they produce assurance and accountability open to question but also, by imposing their own values, audits often have unintended and dysfunctional consequences for the audited organization.

Only one week after purchasing this book I spotted an Oil Lamp in an antique shop in Bournemouth, England and I bought it at a bargain price knowing from reading this book that it was a 1904 German "Bismark" Lamp!

The book has some really cute, original ideas for children. I was very excited to get started on a project for my daughter. The instructions were very basic and did not include sufficient detail to avoid making mistakes. Also, the project was far too small to turn it inside out without pushing a hole through the fabric. I will most likely stick to embroidered items and will avoid the doll projects in the book.

Beautifully illustrated and easy to follow instructions. The patterns, sewing instructions and examples are written in a way that anyone, beginner or novice will complete equally beautiful works.

Beautiful photography, but there's not much substance. The potential applications of the included patterns are limited.

Twentieth-century New York is now famous as the city of "cliff dwellers," but in the second half of the nineteenth century, middle-class apartments in Manhattan were a new--and somewhat suspect--architectural form. Alone Together presents a history of the "invention" of New York apartment houses.

5 out of 5 stars The development of the early New York apartment house.......2001-11-01

This superb book explains how well-to-do New Yorkers were reluctant to move into apartment buildings, and how that resistance was overcome through clever design and marketing tactics. Cromley begins by discussing early Parisian apartment buildings and the earliest tenements in New York City. These two historic strands came together in the 1870s, when apartment buildings for the affluent, known as 'French flats,' appeared as a new building type for New York. Cromley highlights the social history of the era - what life was really like for the people (especially the women) who lived there, as distinct from their counterparts in single-family houses. Among the still-extant classic buildings discussed are the Dakota (1884), the Osborne (1885), and the Ansonia (1902). In all, the book covers the mid-1800s to 1911; there is nothing here about the 1920s building boom following WWI. The book is generously illustrated with about 30 floor plans and about 50 engravings.

                                        Book Description

As Argentina, Brazil, and Chile made transitions from democratic to authoritarian forms of government (and back), they confronted challenges posed by the rise of the feminist movement, social changes, and the power of the Catholic Church. This study explores the patterns of gender-related policy reform in these countries and reveals their implications for the peoples of Latin America. In addition, it offers a broader understanding of the logic behind the state's role in affecting private lives and gender relations everywhere.

                                        Book Description

"Exotic venues, sold-out concerts, and the companionship of the world's most powerful people have given Liona Boyd a lifestyle few will ever experience.

The internationally acclaimed classical guitarist has crossed numerous boundries, both musically and romantically. Whether working with such classical greats as Alexandre Lagoya or with such folk legends as Gordon Lightfoot she has always made music - and lived her life - in her own key.

In this colorful memoir she serves up a rich and fascinating mix: childhood with her progressive parents in England, Canada and Mexico; intense and exacting music studies in Toronto and Europe; down-and-out years in London and Paris; drug experimentation in a Mexican artists colony; and whirlwind trips around the globe to eminent concert stages.

And who can forget her friendship with Canada's prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau? Here, for the first time, Liona tells the full story behind that relationship.

It all makes for a rousing, fiesty, passionate tale, as compelling and entrancing as the music of her Ramirez guitar." Don Bastian, Stoddart Publishing

It is a shame when someone achieves fame for all the wrong reasons. Ms. Boyd is, frankly, not a very good guitarist. Gushing, adoring amateurs mostly cannot tell the difference. Professionals take the "I'll never tell" stance. And the myth is born.

I gave the book 1 star because I don't like frauds. But, it's an interesting read. It's pretty clear where Liona did much of her "concertizing."

This book is a wonderful account of one of the most talented musicians alive! I have been a huge fan of Liona's music for many years and this book gives an in depth look into what this Classical Guitarist is really all about. She has been through so much growing up and it is great to know that she has met her dreams and continues to flourish in her field. I hope Liona will continue to write books, as this is more proof of what a talented lady she really is. The writing is as imaginative and inspiring as her music. Even if you're not a fan of her music or do not know her music, that should not keep you from reading this book. I can't wait for more!

My first interest in classical guitar followed our daughter's learning the ukulele, then the guitar at elementary school. When the local community center offered group guitar lessons by a talented local musician, I enrolled. As time went on we attended numerous classical guitar concerts by many well known guitarists. We also saw Liona Boyd on PBS in the early 1980's. Since that time, we have seen Liona perform many concerts, and had our albums signed by her. Liona's sensitive tonal interpretation of many popular guitar pieces and her unique music writing abilities place her eminently among her peers.

Liona's autobiography weaves a fascinating and wonderful history of her upbringing, adventures, and dedication to the mastery of her musical instrument, the classical guitar. Liona's book tells of her many interesting experiences, stories, adventures and travelogs as a solo female artist. We recommend this book about North America's foremost classical guitarist without reservation. The book is well written and includes many beautiful photographs of Liona, her family, and friends. We are proud to have it on our bookshelf. We look forward to future publications by Liona Boyd.

A fan of classical music and guitar in particular, I had to have this book, of course. But could I imagine how much fun it would be to read? I had trouble putting it down at night and finished it in two days! What a wonderful person she is. Everybody who loves music should read this book, as it is full of interesting anecdotes and stories behind the scenes in the guitar world. The print quality of the colorful pictures is excellent. A great value.
