Book Description
Kathryn Kish Sklar calls this work "a major contribution to our historical understanding of the role of women in organizing American miners in the twentieth century."
Agnes Burns Wieck was a crusading labor organizer, an activist known as "the Mother Jones of Illinois." This first book-length biography is a unique portrait of her energy and unremitting dedication to social justice.
Wieck organized miners’ wives and led a movement of Illinois coalfield women. She used her talents as a journalist and a public speaker to campaign for a decent standard of living, for good schools and working conditions in communities free of corporate domination, and for union democracy, racial equality, and acceptance of women in political life.
Book Description
Charles Tyng's quarter century under sail took him around the world half a dozen times at the begining of the nineteenth century. Fortunately, he proved to be as natural a storyteller as he was a sailor. Before the Wind has been hailed as a superb contribution to seafaring literature, alongside such books as Two Years Before the Mast and the novels of Patrick O'Brian.
Both Tyng's life and the way he recounts his years at sea are full of wonder: He survives shipwrecks, squalls, and pirates. He makes and loses fortunes in tea, sugar, and cotton. He meets Lord Byron as well as the British princess (later queen) Victoria. Sailors, armchair travelers, history buffs, and lovers of pulse-quickening maritime stories will find this book as seductive as the siren song of the sea.
"Rings with authenticity and nerve . . . A novelist's eye for detail and a storyteller's flair make this yarn a page turner." --The New York Times Book Review
"Original and rich." --New York Newsday
"No admirer of Americana or sailing ships should miss."--Atlantic Monthly
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely wonderful read.......2005-10-30
Charles Tyng tells a most exciting real life tale which is better than the fiction which movies are made of.
To think of the hardships of a rather rebelious little boy from his mother dying who overcame to become a most successful gentleman is a profile in courage and chivalry. Tyng honestly overcame more by the time he was 15 than most people do in their entire lives.
This would make a most telling movie, but for now this is the perfect diary of life almost unknown from 1812 in America.
A 5 star enthusiastic review.
Getting rich the hard way.......2002-08-20
While Charles Tyng's brothers became wealthy as doctors, lawyers and land-based businessmen, Charles (due to his poor study habits) was forced to pursue the much more dangerous and uncertain vocation of sailor and sea-merchant. This is definitely no dry account of business deals. This story is about Charles' struggles against cruel and incompetent superiors, ferocious storms at sea, mutinous and violent crews, pirate attacks, shark attacks and, for good measure a bout with cholera. If even half of Tyng's account is true, he was very, very lucky to live to old age. Tyng was obviously a man who was very curious by nature and so he was able to describe in detail many aspects of the people, places and operations that he witnessed (such as whale hunting, sugar processing, and opium smuggling). Most of it is very interesting because it paints a piture of a world very different from our modern world. Tyng himself is likable, for the most part, although he definitely was a bit of a rogue; he pulls a few pratical jokes on people that adds some humor to the story. I only give it four stars because there were a couple short dry patches in the book. Overall, though, very enjoyable.
Depends on you.......2002-04-19
If you're not already into this stuff, it will put you to sleep.
If on the other hand, like me, the mere mention of the days of tall ships fills your lungs with salt air, gets your sea legs in motion, and gives you a faraway thrill, then this becomes the definitive life story of every sailor who ever went to sea.
And this guy has been through it all: pirates, mutinies, shipwrecks, storms, cruel officers, exotic foreign shores, wars (on both land and sea, including the American revolution and the China traders), sharks, starvation, marriage (that ultimate adventure), disease, and even "haunted" ships.
Beautifully written in the eloquent style of a man who had been an illiterate cabin boy and eventually educated himself with distinction, it even chronicles the effects that his life at sea had upon the way his family saw him and the business world dealt with him, and contains vignettes about minute aspects of life back then that I'd never been aware of.
What a find!
a compelling yarn.......2000-11-20
A delight to read, Tyng's memoir only disappoints by ending too soon. For anyone who has read Morison's Maritime History of Massachusetts or my own recently published BULLOUGH'S POND and wondered what merchant shipping was really like, Tyng has the answers. But you can enjoy this book even if you bring no questions to the table, as long as you enjoy a good adverdure story well told. Diana Muir
An interesting account of merchant service on tall ships.......2000-06-01
I came across a reference to this book when checking the book reviews of another amazon.com reviewer. It is an autobiography of Captain Charles Tyng, covering the early part of his life and, in particular, his career in as a merchant mariner from the time he was 13 to the time he was 31. It was taken from a hand written manuscript which he wrote 45 years after the last event detailed, and not published until 120 years after his death after being found by one of his descendents. He started as a ship's boy, shortly after the end of the War of 1812 on a voyage to Canton, China; rapidly rose to a ship's captain by his own initiative, family connections, and matters of chance; and established his early fortune by the private trading allowed to ships' captains, trading in things as exotic as live monkeys, parrots, bird nests, and other commodities. He had an eye for potential profit. The book details the harsh life of merchant sailors, with miserly ship owners often giving them insufficient food and low pay (if they did not try to steal even that), and bad treatment from some sadistic ships' officers. Captain Tyng managed to become a ship owner at an early age, and was a successful merchant brokering cargo by the time he was 31 (the ending point of the tale). The last chapter covers a conflict in Charleston, SC, between the State and the Federal Government about 30 years before the Civil War when South Carolina passed the Nullification Act, refusing to pay duties on imported goods, and President Jackson sent a frigate to Charleston to enforce the customs and General Scott to restore order in the city. The book is the manuscript pretty much as written and has a few flaws as a novel, e.g., excessive repetition of the phrase, "I can't remember his name," some repetition of descriptions, and a lot of short digressions. It is an interesting historical account providing details of the U.S. merchant service during the early 19th century including shipwrecks, pirates, mutinies, connivery, etc., as well as extensive details of the merchantile business of that era when it was possible to make large profits on a well placed investment. There are some side details such as the U.S. and British business of smuggling opium into China.

If I file for bankruptcy... Will I wipe out all of my debts? Probably. And if not all of them, at least most. (See Chapter 3.)
Will I lose my house? If you are up to date on your mortgage payments or can get up to date, you're not likely to lose your house. (See Chapter 4.)
Will I lose my apartment? Not if you're current on your rent. (See Chapter 4.)
Can I keep my car and other property? Most likely. Most people lose no property when they file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 5.)
Can I keep my credit cards? Probably not--but there's no reason to. (See Chapters 6 and 9.)
Will I lose my job? No. An employer may not fire you solely because you filed for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I lose custody of my children? No. Divorce judges see a lot of people who file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I go to jail? Not unless you commit perjury, defraud the bankruptcy court or commit a similar act. (See Chapter 7.)
Will someone from the bankruptcy court visit my home or business? No. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I move? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I change jobs? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I get divorced? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Will my friends and neighbors find out? It's unlikely, unless you tell them. (See Chapter 7.)
Is it hard to file? It's about as hard as filing a 1040 long-form tax return. (See Chapter 8.)
Will I be able to get credit in the future? Yes--and more than likely, fairly soon after your bankruptcy case ends. (See Chapter 9.)
Will I be able to rent an apartment in the future? This is the one area in which people sometimes run into problems. But there are steps you can take to help yourself. (See Chapter 9.)
Is bankruptcy even necessary? Not everyone needs to file or should file. An alternative might be the answer. (See Chapter 10.)

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2004-12-30
I read this book (borrowed through the library) not because of financial difficulties, but because I wanted to brush up on some technicalities of bankruptcy. In the past I've had clients take bankruptcy and I've had to deal with the bankrutpcy proceedings. Although I do not currently do this sort of work I expect to enter another profession in the future where knowledge of the bankruptcy law and the individual states exemptions will make my job much easier. This book is an excellent overview of the bankrupcty law and I highly recommend it to anybody who is considering taking bankruptcy or deals with bankruptcy either directly or indirectly in their job.
Bankruptcy - Nolo Press guide .......2004-10-20
There are eleven chapters that cover Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies. A bankruptcy is either liquidation (7) or reorganization (11,12,13). They can last from a few months (7) to several years (11). Chapter 12 pertains to a large debt due to a family farm.
The questions and answers are categorized for Chapter 7 and 13, like the trustee and going to court. The meeting of creditors takes place 20-40 days after you file. My meeting took place a few weeks ago. This is a meeting you must attend and have no input into the date and time it takes place.
Filing the papers costs $209 in California. Once they have been filed all creditors must cease to contact you, utilities will not be disconnected if they were going to be, an eviction will be stopped, foreclosures and judgments get an automatic stay. It is mentioned that in some states loss of driver's license happens because of a liability for damages stemming from an automobile accident. The automatic stay will stop this from occurring as well. If you are dependent on the vehicle for family support filing bankruptcy might be the reason to keep your license.
Filing bankruptcy does not stop the enforcement of child support or alimony. The book goes into this topic in various chapters. Federal, Local and State taxes are not discharged through Chapter 7. Student loans are not covered either, although if you can prove hardship a portion might get discharged.
There is a checklist in a box format that covers each chapter. The back cover has a listing of questions referencing which chapter is covering that topic. There are some cartoon sketches in black and white that take reduce the stress level of this process. The index breaks down all the topics.
It is also recommended that your maiden and married names be cited in your papers. The section with questions about how the bankruptcy affects your personal life discuss employment and living. This should not impact your job and there is no reason why they would know about it, unless your wages were being garnished. This will be listed on your credit report and you will need to be diligent to make sure the creditors report this accurately. Filing for bankruptcy has nothing to do with jail, you did not break the law or lose your right to vote.
Bankruptcy: Is it the right solution to your debt problems will help you learn the schedules, how to pick your exemptions and decide if you are using a paralegal, lawyer or doing the forms yourself. This is a great guide to show you all the necessary documents needed to prepare with examples.
The author is a consumer debt expert. At the end of each chapter is a box to remind you that it is time to fill out the questions in the checklist. Businesses cannot file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. There is also some information for newly married spouses to determine if both should be named in the bankruptcy.
Great, Fantastic........2002-10-12
This is really a must have. I handled my own chapter 13, start to finish with this one. Even handled the emergency filing to get mean ole nasty pasty creditors that were harassing me intentionally off my case. I was even able to file a complaint with them thru the bankruptcy courts. This book references this, and I called the clerks office, and checked out web sites, and this book gave me the confidence, to file a complaint against these creditors. The interderagatorys are fanstasic. THese really helped me out, at my creditors meetings. I was able to even able to pursue a wage garnishment out of my soon to b X's pay check. This was the only way I was going to keep my stuff. I really enjoyed I must say representing my self. It is really not that hard, and more of u folks out there need to try it. They really don't chew ya up and spit ya out like everyone believes. It was not that stress ful, after everything was filed. Actually, It was nice to bask in the quiteness of the emeregency filing. My phone quit ringing. It was soooo nice. This one belongs rite up there with my bible. It was a thrill I must say to stand in line to file my paper work, schedules, and yes, I even filed a motion.! It was great standing there next to some of my towns high power bankruptcy attorneys. ONly thing, I have to say, when attorneys, start offering free advise, have a pen ready to write. I also learned be nice as pie to the clerks. They are so busy, and swamped with work. U will be glad you had patience. Patience is a virtue on this one as far as filings go. THe creditors meetings went well, I even drafted my own propsals of what I wanted, to happend. I even learned how to contest the amount of my truck, and did so, and requested the interest rate be dropped. I got just what I wanted. It actually was not as a terrible as we are taught in society to think. Oh my she/he file bankruptcy. It was not that bad, and also the bankruptcy court I went to, had a class on how to balance your budget, and it was very informational. Dom't feel bad if you have to do this someday. It happens to the bestest of us. IF you do this is definitely the book you wanna seek. I have compared up to some of the competetions, and I felt this one was the easy one to use. Plainest english. Simplest terms. I didnot feel intimidated at all by this book. This book covered all the bases, and then some. Others books I feel were not as complete as this one was. I researched books and sat down and looked thru them at my local book store. THis one won hands down. I must say, it is flexible, easy to tote with you, easy to put in babys bag, and easy to tote on bike with grocerys, and easy to clean up. I spilled coffee on mine... wipes up great. Later, Betty Hogges. :)

Book Description
Wristwatches is an indispensible source of reference. Practical and informative, it is the ultimate connoisseur's guide to the best in wristwatches.
Customer Reviews:
Good Overview.......2004-02-24
This is a good overview of watch history and availability. Highlighted are 55 of the major collectible watch companies with good photo selections from each. The detailed pages on the companies is good and informative. Not bad for the coffee table, either.
Pretty pictures- Scant value.......2000-11-10
This is an OK gift book with nice photos of watches, but it fails as a "connoisseurs" guide. There is scant history of the various brands and almost no technical information. No connoisseur would seriously consider a Timex watch, but Timex is presented along with the finest Breitlings, Bulgaris, Breguets et al. In the section on Bulgari, the author describes in detail a watch given by Count Galazzo (sic) Ciano to a friend, but there is no illustration to go along with the description.
A watch collector or connoisseur should not waste his or her time with this lightweight giftbook
Nice but shortý.......2000-06-23
Nothing much to learn from this well illustrated book, at least nothing more than what can be found in "wriswatch annual". For newbies only.
Concise interesting overview of actual wristwatches producer.......1999-08-30
Accurate and concise history of time keeping, with a brief history of the technical evolution as well as a generical presentation of the main 50 makers and their actual products. Good photos.
For coffee tables, not collectors.......1999-01-27
Great pictures but short on content. The layout is first-rate, and the author was able to shoot some historic timepieces, but the company index reads more like a well-worded ad than an explanation of what makes good watches great. Also leaves out mention of some interesting or odd collectibles. Could also use some diagrams of working watches. Otherwise, it's too technical. A beautiful book, nonetheless. One which will get picked up by non-collectors as well.

Customer Reviews:
A little too "cute".......2007-05-11
I first purchased the two Anna Corba books and absolutely LOVED them. Each and every element is presented as either a 72 or 220 dpi image on the included CD. I loved her layouts and the use of ephemerial elements. This version is a little too cute for my tastes, but the elements are still available on the CD. If you want a quieter, more elegant style, stick with the Anna Corba books.
Regardless, you will not waste your money with any of the Instant Memories series, each edition contains so many pieces...my mind boggles at all the delicious collage and scrapping opportunities.
Another beautiful additon.......2006-01-22
I am adddicted to "Instant Memories." I must buy all of their publications. Sure, I have been disappointed, especially "Christmas," but all of their other publications are great. Their two latest, "Love" and "Family" are, by far, their best.
If you are a clip art junkie, you have come to the right place. These two volumes are especially beautiful and unique.
I am not a fan of computer scrapping. The items in this volume can be used for this. I am tactile. This web art clearly shows how you can adapt their designs real time. I have used some of their items for print out. They are beautiful and intensely colored and add beauty to any page.
I've rarely thought about being a salesperon for anything, but these publications make me think twice.

Book Description
arsenalpulp.com :
The fearless monsters we think are our kind
The changes we take, the evil we love
The insane things we have all done
No one has won.
ÂMegan
Teen suicide has long been considered one of society's darkest secrets; the idea of troubled young people driven to take their own lives was a tragedy too horrible to contemplate, let alone talk about openly. But the fact remains that teen suicide is an issue that refuses to go away so long as young people in crisis have nowhere to turn. But now, in this age of frank discussions about bullying, peer pressure, and issues of "difference," there is a growing sense that teen suicide is no longer a taboo subject, and that talking about it can help us to identify and acknowledge the kind of problems that lead teens to make such drastic and tragic decisions.
Based on interviews with teen suicide survivors, parents, and professionals, Marion Crook sensitively explores all aspects of teen suicide, in particular the reasons why certain young people are driven to it. The motives are far-ranging, but central to all is a sense of desperation: Bruce was habitually ignored and unaccepted by his family as he grew up; he hit the streets at the age of ten and ended up in jail at the age of eighteen. Rena was sexually abused at the age of eight, then taunted about her physical appearance throughout high school. Helen was constantly belittled by her father, completely eroding her self-esteem. Despite their dire circumstances, however, they found a way out of the darkness and into adult lives of meaning and worth.
Marion Crook also examines the history of teen suicide in Western and other cultures, as well as what roles parents and schools can play in suicide prevention, and coping strategies for teens in crisis. Out of the Darkness is a book for both teens and adults that breaks the silence surrounding teen suicide, offering hope for those who think there is none.
Customer Reviews:
An insight into a preventable public health problem.......2006-07-25
Most of the research on youth suicide focuses on clinical profiling but there aren't many studies that reflect the adolescent's own perspective. Even though the book does not pursue qualitative psychological research (say, discourse analysis), it does achieve the goal of "cruising" the reader (parents of teenagers, hopefully) into the heterogeinity that suicidal adolescents conform. As a clinical psychologist I consider Crook's approach very valuable in improving intervention parameters by rescuing and not putting aside what these kids at risk have to say of their own experience. I believe effective psycotherapy with suicidal teens has to actively incorporate not only risk factors and comorbidity but also individual differences, circumstances and resources.

Book Description
Drawing upon Dick Wellstood's unpublished personal correspondence and the recollections of his family, friends, and fellow musicians, Giant Strides explores the personality of this talented musician and intriguing man. Meyer's own writing and interviews with Wellstood himself, as well as Kenny Davern, Marty Grosz, Dick Sudhalter, Joe Muranyi, and Dan Morgenstern bring Wellstood to vivid life.
Customer Reviews:
The Late Dick Wellstood.......2000-04-28
Mr.Meyer claims not to be a writer, but he has done a superb job of this biography of the late jazz pianist Dick Wellstood. (the only biography of Wellstood) The personal information he garnered from Dick's family and fellow musicians is both revealing and insightful. Since the book includes a complete discography of all known Wellstood recordings, it is a "must have" for all admirers of one of the greatest jazz pianists in history. Sadly, Wellstood died in 1987 at the early age of 59, but this book brings him to life again for the reader.

Book Description
The Bible calls David "a man after God's own heart." But what does that really mean and how does that apply to us today? With his unusual warmth, clarity, and simplicity, Dr. McGee takes a look at the life of David, helping readers move beyond the exciting action stories and into the heart of what David's experiences have to teach us. Dr. McGee said, "Perhaps the most familiar Bible story to every boy and girl who has attended Sunday School is that of David and Goliath. It is a thrilling action story. But the greater thrill is the splendid spiritual truths that are applicable to our present-day lives as believers."
