Book Description
1903. Wafer was an English naval surgeon who deserted to join the buccaneers. This volume recalls his adventures and observations of his expeditions to the Isthmus, the western coast of South America and the West Indies from 1680 to 1688. While crossing the Isthmus of Panama after the taking of Santa Maria, Wafer was injured and left in the care of Darien Indians. The Indians took a liking to him, which allowed him to gather material for this book. He was picked up by William Dampier, the English explorer and buccaneer. His book today is still recognized as a standard reference on the area.

Customer Reviews:
Law, Made it easy........2001-06-21
The authors made the legal issues easy to understand. I was out there looking for a such book for a long long time, and this is the book. This book helpes me to be prepared for some potential legal matters that I may have to face in a complicated casino hotel environment. I had a great opportunity to meet with the author Stephen Barth at the New York Hotel Show one year. He was a keynote speaker.
Minimize legal difficulties.......2001-04-25
As President & CEO of the Texas Hotel and Motel Association, I have known Stephen Barth as a revered professor of hospitality law at the University of Houston's Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, as a tremendously popular seminar leader, and now, I am pleased to say, as an outstanding author.
His book, Hospitality Law, provides an up-to-date information source that can teach practicing hospitality managers and students how to avoid and minimize legal difficulties they might otherwise face in the running of lodging properties. The book is well written, easy to follow, and best of all, gives examples from the actual operations of lodging and restaurant establishments. Especially strong are the sections on contract law, safety and security, and employment issues.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the legal issues that arise in the everyday decisions that a lodging property professional must make.
Great industry resource.......2001-04-11
Great industry resource for lodging and hospitality managers. This book is far more practical than others Ive used or reviewed. Mr. Barth makes the book usuable for students, yet extremely practical for those already in working in the field. We now promote and encourage the use of this book with all those we work with.

Book Description
This late-19th-century volume on the science and mechanics of the bicycle remains unsurpassed in its thorough, accurate, technical coverage of the subject. More than 560 illustrations, diagrams, figures, and tables complement an exhaustive examination of such topics as the development of cycles, kinematics, stability, steering, the frame, gears, stresses, and mechanical components.
Customer Reviews:
over 100 years old and still upto date .......2006-12-22
This book shows that many current 'new' ideas in cycling are not at all new ..... very useful even now.
...like a good wine.......2006-03-09
Although 100 years old, it has great potential as a technical reference for small mechanism design as well as bicycles.
Wow - I never expected...........2005-08-05
Honestly, I have studied some of the older bikes, like highwheelers and the safeties and even the racing frames used by 6-day racers like Major (Marshall) Taylor... and I honestly thought most of the early bikes were designed by luck and a prayer.
Sharp shows how much engineering knowledge was known about bicycles at the early parts of the 20th century. No wonder bikes were the precursors to --the automobile, --the airplane, --Harleys!
Concerns about bottom-bracket flex, weight distribution, climbing efficiency, transmission systems, steering control, comfort, stability at speed, etc. are all covered. Various materials and their pros and cons are covered (but back then exotic materials were bamboo and heat treated rolled steel!).
If you are an engineer or have a good background in math, you will be entertained by the incredible amounts of analysis presented in the text. If you are just a techie bike geek like me you will still enjoy it without breaking out the calculator to verify the formulaes. There are lots of 'pretty pictures' and well explained concepts to inform and entertain anyone interested in the fundmental engineering priciples and concerns of bicycles.
Still Useful Today.......2004-06-30
One of Sharp's goals was to debunk the truly awful designs of his day, and hopefully bring about their demise. When the book was written, the "ordinary" had only recently given way to the "safety," and the proliferation of designs described here is truly mind-boggling. As a historical record of early bicycle design, no other book even comes remotely close. The technical section is thorough enough to qualify as an engineering textbook, and needs no updating. The section on the design of individual components is of course limited by what was available at the time, but nevertheless is still of interest. After the numerous references to this book in Mike Burrows' "Bicycle Design," I had searched unsuccessfully for years for a used copy. The reissuance of Sharp at a reasonable price shouldn't be passed up by anyone with even a passing interest in bicycle design and history. Be forewarned: this is a faithful facsimile of the original, and as such, the typeface isn't as clear as what we're used to nowadays. We're lucky that the book is available at all, and this edition is undoubtably superior in appearance to an original (assuming you can even find one).
A classic........2003-12-17
The greatest bicycle engineering book ever written, and it's from 1896. When resources and minds were focused on bicycles, Archibald Sharp was leading the pack. Soon after the focus turned to internal combustion engines and no other books like this one have ever been published. This new edition is economical and a must for any serious bike book collection.
Book Description
Unlock the secrets of a beautiful, ancient, and closely guarded Japanese craft. Kumihimo refers to all kinds of braiding; here, the focus is on Takadai, a term for colorful and elaborate single- and double-layered flat braids made on a high-stand frame, with a plain weave and twill structure. With more than 150 photographs, 70 charts, 25 illustrations, and easy-to-follow instructions, this collection offers an ideal introduction for anyone from weavers to embroiderers. Find out about the equipment, materials, and techniques; create color, weave, rep-weave, chevron, and textured patterns, plus braids with decorative edges; and make many designs to turn into scarves, bracelets, and other adornments. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.
Customer Reviews:
Making Kumihimo japanese interlaced brads.......2007-08-24
Darn I should have read the other reviews. I looked at the pictures and thought I could do them on one of my looms - but no it's for a way more complicated loom. Rats I should have not bought this since I am a complete novice!
Making Kumihimo: Japanese Interlaced Braids.......2006-02-18
For anyone who has Owen's other book, Braids: 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru and Beyond, and thinks you will be getting more patterns to be used on the marudai loom, think again. I built the loom from the first book and thought this was other patterns for flat braids I could use on it. This book is about weaving on a completely different loom, a takadai loom. He does give a diagram of all the parts of the loom if you want to build one but doesn't include any dimensions. I could follow most of the instructions for the braiding but had trouble in spots where he made leaps over information a beginner would need. Someone who weaves already might have a clearer understanding of the instructions.
Some things are not in the Description.......2005-05-29
To my shock...there was nothing in the description that mentioned that if you want to make anything in this book you will need about $700.00 in equipment and supllies!
Other than that it is a good technical book with lots of pretty pictures and instructions.

Book Description
Now in paperback: The first-ever biography of one of the legends of modern jazz, written with his full cooperation. Sonny Rollins is one of jazz's great innovators, arguably the most influential tenor saxophonist, along with John Coltrane, in the history of modern jazz. He began his musical career at the age of eleven, and within five short years he was playing with the legendary Thelonious Monk. In the late forties, before his twenty-first birthday, Rollins was in full swing, recording with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis, and he was hailed as the best jazz tenor man alive in the mid-fifties. Still active today, Rollins and his compelling sound reach a whole new generation of listeners with his eagerly anticipated live appearances. Now renowned jazz writer Eric Nisenson provides a long-overdue look at one of jazz's brightest, and most enduring, stars.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful analysis of artists work.......2004-08-28
The first test to me on reading about an artist is whether the book is a spur to sending the reader back to the works. This book passes that test and I'm revisiting Mr Rollins' legacy especially that on the RCA Collected Set and Live at the Village Vanguard with Wilbur Ware, Elvin Jones et al. Those of you familiar with HEAR ME TALKIN' TO YOU will appreciate the insights gained from the musicians' own thoughts and feelings not to mention the appeal of the patois. OPEN SKY is quite valuable in that Mr ROLLINS makes quite a contribution. The author adds to the appeal by going over the recorded legacy of Mr Rollins. We don't only need great musicians, they need great listeners.
There is also many added pleasures to this fine read, including thoughts about health, attitude, race, as well as the added pleasure of Mr Rollins' involvement with some of our greatest artists including COLEMAN HAWKINS and JOHN COLTRANE. For lovers of improvised music (jazz) I would think this is an essential purchase.
Some Reviewers Missing the Point.......2004-02-14
First, let me disclose that I haven't yet read this book. But, I'm in the midst of reading "Ascenion," Nisenson's book about Coltrane and his music. It sounds to me like Nisenson is taking a similar approach here in his Rollin's book. The complaint that this book is not a comprehensive book about Rollin's life, but rather, more about his music and process, seems to me like complaining that a lecture on Picasso spoke too much of his art and artistry and not enough about his life. Yes, if you want a biography of Rollin's personal life, then this may be thin from that perspective. But, if this book is anything like "Ascension," it will provide the reader and lover of Rollin's music with valuable insight into his music, which is, after all, the most important thing. Isn't it?
focuses on the music.......2003-03-19
For an understanding of Rollins' playing and his uniqueness as an artist I would recommend this book. Nisenson does capture the feelings that I associate with seeing/hearing Sonny Rollins perform live. As other reviewers have said below this is not a comprehensive biography but it is written with a deep appreciation of the music that is Rollins' contribution to the culture. Sonny Rollins is the greatest live performer I've ever seen and this book captures some of that spirit so for me it was a worthwhile read.
A good introduction to the genius of Sonny Rollins.......2002-03-02
"Open Sky" provides the reader with a music fan's perspective on the brilliance of sax great, Sonny Rollins. Nisenson writes with an obvious love of jazz and his book is peppered with Rollins's own words -- originally expressed in a series of telephone interviews with the author. As others have mentioned here, "Open Sky" is not a comprehensive survey or an extensive biography. Nisenson focuses instead on the highlights of Rollins's long recording career -- providing insight into the evolution of his improvisational art. The book does not include a discography (or an index) but this does not seriously detract from enjoying a good read. As with good improv, sometimes it's best to be left wanting more!
I was very disappointed with this book........2001-08-09
Eric Nisenson claims that this is not a definitive biography of Sonny Rollins. I would have to agree. Not only does this book tell us hardly anything about Sonny's personal life (his inpirations, his heartbreaks, his relationships with other jazz musicians), it has neither a discography nor an index. It's list of sources is only a page and a half, half of which seem to be previous books by Nisenson. After an inspired first chapter, Nisenson just seems to list through Sonny's albums and notable achievements, using generous quotes from Sonny describing events that were just described by the author himself. There were some good discriptions of some of the albums and some of Sonny's better solos, but most of it reads like a textbook. I would suggest that someone wait for either Sonny's autobiography (for which he's obviously saved a lot of info) or a "definitive" biography.
