In the final volume, The Everest Years, Bonington chronicles his four expeditions to the world's highest peak and his crowning achievement when he reached the summit of Everest in 1976.

With characteristic warmth and enthusiasm, Bonington covers half a century of mountaineering at the highest level, offering insight into a charismatic generation of climbing personalities, his friends, and his own development into the devoted family man and celebrity he is today.

The Philosophy of Climbing.......2002-08-07

This is a wonderful collection of three autobiographical books by Chris Bonington. Unlike expedition accounts, these cover broad swathes of time -- about ten years each. This approach gives the author a chance to describe the advances in his technical climbing capability through the years.

More significantly, however, the collection gradually downplays the technical side; the length of time that he surveys gives Bonington the space to describe his evolving philosophy towards climbing. The technical aspects of climbing seem to diminish through the book and the storyline is replaced by the inner exploration of what it means for him to climb. As he grows older, the changes in personality that it takes to become a successful leader of climbers are also increasingly demonstrated.

Bonington has certainly lived a charmed life; except for his injuries suffered on the Ogre, he has been blessed with luck that few other climbers have sustained over a 30-40 year span. He has also been blessed with an ability to write that few other climbers (perhaps Greg Childs, Joe Tasker, Peter Boardman, and Joe Simpson?) can match.

Highly recommended.

Mountaineer aristocrat - articulacy vs Vertigo.......2000-08-23

I had the rare advantage in the early 1970s of contributing to Cassell (UK) publisher's publicity when I worked with Chris Bonington and the genius mystic climber Dougal Haston's "In High Places".

This is a bumper volume of 3 books and I'll leave it to the experts to discuss the technical side. What leaves a lasting impression is Bonington's (now Sir Chris, I believe) felicity with words while at the same time preserving a gentlemanly diffidence; his willingness to bare his soul in a way that tapped universal truths.

Mountaineering types will read assessments of this collection in their favoured climbing press, but I urge *non* climbers to give this a look-see. In one collection, you're in the hands of an athlete and a soldier and one who can write.

Here's a man who passed up a prince's salary as a Suit to pit himself against the peaks. More than that - and here's where you'd never have got Haston or Whillans dissecting it with such skill - Bonington describes the *commercial* side of having to fawn and press flesh to squeeze up the cash.

'The Everest Years' is a real bonus here, and what comes home is the author's expert rhythm and poetry. The canvas is wide - vertiginous Changabang, Ogre where CB bust himself up something awful - but the writing transcends the mountain and seems to spell out universal truths. Only God knows why He chose Chris to survive when so many others- infant and adult, climber, kin - have been 'gathered'. Perhaps to place with us these incomparable records as a bridge between those like him who need to tackle those heights, and their courageous loved ones who take this lunacy on trust. Go seek this rare writing out.

Miller, Harrell and Morgan have divided the material into three parts: pre-transactional protections, focusing on improper inducements — ranging from misleading advertising through unsolicited access devices — disclosure and fair evaluation; initial transaction protections, such as charge regulation and unconscionability, unfairness and bad faith; and later transaction protections, involving matters in closed-end transactions such as billing errors, limitations on default, the enforcement of liens and abusive collection efforts, and bankruptcy.

Both federal and state laws are covered in this casebook. Discussion on the federal level includes the Consumer Credit Protection Act, Federal Trade Commission statutes and regulations, and RESPA. Focus at the state level primarily is through uniform acts such as the Consumer Credit Code and Consumer Sales Practices Act.

Falling Apart.......2006-08-09

Well, this book is horrible, it's a class book, required for my class with University of Maryland. The thing is falling apart as I type this and it started only a few short weeks into class.

The layout of the book is awful. There's more questions in this book than anything. By far, it is the worst legal book I've had to use. It mentions so many laws in one sentence it's worthless to read the chapters. Nestled in between the multitude of Case Snippets and Endless student exercises, there may be some text to learn from or to explain the case snippet you just read, but not much.

If anyone uses this in a class, avoid the class.

Simply a Masterpiece.......2005-02-06

My wife makes me read most of her dozens and dozens of jewelry books so I can help her out occasionally, but this one didn't need more than a quick browse to get me started.

Modernist Jewelry, it seems as though there has never been enough information. Christie Romero's Warman Jewelry and Messengers of Modernism were great aids. The Author's online Modern Silver Magazine has provided insightful information on dozens of Modernist artists, as as her webpage.

Now we have the most complete source of information available anywhere. Studying the art, the histories, the influences, and especially the artists has finally become possible from this scholarly work. The photography is top-notch, the values are reasonable, timely, and well researched, and the writing is clear and concise. All-in-all it is simply a Masterpiece!

If you could buy only one book to have as a reference on men's clothes, this would be it!! If you are choosing between this book and A.F.'s "updated" later version, get this one. The updated one has less information and also a questionable section on modern casual wear. The book's illustrations are excellently clear, and it is a great learning and reference tool.

Classic Timelessness.......2006-11-30

This is a quick, one-day read, but a lifetime keeper for reference.

Mr. Flusser covers all the essentials in detail: suit coats; suit trousers; sport coats; blazers; dress shirts; neckties; handkerchiefs; hose (socks); shoes; hats; and jewelery.

He covers sportswear such as cable-knit pullover sweaters and cardigans very briefly.

Mr. Flusser asserts the lines, look, and feel of all fine mens wear can be traced to the timespan of the 1930s - 1950s. This was the Golden Age of Hollywood when men dressed well (Cary Grant; Fred Astaire; Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.; Adolph Menjou; and England's Edward, Prince of Wales). Mr. Flusser's point is that if you want a suit that will not be out of date in five or ten years, ensure it is grounded in 1930s - 1950s style, with emphasis on the 1930s.

The only thing I disagreed with in the entire book was his reverence for the four-in-hand necktie knot in all settings. This knot is asymmetrical and does not belong in the boardroom or office. It is a knot that is to be worn casually to a club or in some other social setting. The Windsor or Half Windsor should be worn to the office.

This is somewhat a digression, but there is more to fine dressing than just the fabric against your body, or the leather upon your feet. Care must be taken to groom the hair inside your nose, so that it does not protrude outward. The hair on and in the ear must be cut. Nothing looks worse than looking at a man in fine clothes and seeing he has a thick patch of hair growing out of each ear cavity. Andy Rooney eyebrows are also verboten. Hair, beards, moustaches, eyebrows, ears, nose, teeth...all of these must be groomed/maintained properly to accentuate the look of fine clothes. Without these grooming basics in place, no suit is going to make you look good. Mr. Flusser elected not to cover grooming as essential to the "total package," yet he devoted many areas of the book to items that were not strictly related to clothing. I feel it was a mistake to neglect grooming.

Clothes and the Man is now 21 years old. It is as relevant now as when it was written. This book is a timeless masterpiece, fully deserving five stars.

I have Dressing the man which is almost as good. Clothes and the man was the first book I bought on mens clothing just as I was starting out on my own 14 years ago and I am glad I did..
Flusser taught me everything I know about clothes and then some. This book is well wiritten with practical advice on how a man should dress.

The Bible of Men's Style.......2006-07-19

I've now read several highly recommended books on men's style. This book is the best out of all of them. In my opinion 'Clothes and the Man' is a little better than Flusser's more well-known 'Dressing the Man' (seen stacked in Ralph Lauren stores). 'Clothes and the Man' delves deeper into the subject laying out specific guidelines to build season-specific wardrobes. Unfortunately the book is out of print now...fairly easy to find on the net though!

A timeless guide to timeless style.......2003-04-19

If I say that this book changed my life, I should immediately qualify that by noting that I first read it about the time I graduated from college and was really setting out on my own for the first time. It really defined my sense of classic men's style, and gave me an appreciation, previously lacking, for -- and an ability to recognize -- a truly well-dressed man.

Alan Flusser, a dandy to the core, makes a great case for his argument that men's style (as distinct from "men's fashion" -- yuck) changes little over the decades. The "look" that worked for Fred Astaire or Cary Grant still works today. Tab collars, rounded collars, suspenders, monk straps, French cuffs, handkerchiefs (aka "pocket squares") no tassel loafers with suits! ... the man who absorbs "the principles of fine men's dress" presented here will be well armed to do battle with a world where "dressing down" has become the sad and sorry norm.

If, as Oscar Wilde said, "A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life," Alan Flusser will help you take a great many paces down that road. Take that step now! It may even change your life too.

Not just for parents of teens!.......2007-05-11

My teenager daughter has been refusing to go to school, posting revealing self-portraits on the internet, and defying me on just about every issue. Like the parents described in this book, I am frustrated, guilty, and burned out (whipped). Some days, I just don't even want to come home from work.

This book really helped me to see my daughter and myself in a different light. I understand more about her now, and how my behavior has kind of fed her behavior. I also feel equipped to deal with the stuff she throws my way. I'll be on my TOES from now on!

If you're looking for a book that will teach you how to control your child, this isn't it. In fact, this book is more about you than it is about your kid. And after reading it, I realize that I don't WANT to "control" her either. I can see her aggravating traits as potential strengths, too.

As I read this book, however, I was struck by the similarities in some of the stories to my 10-year-old step-son. He's having even more behavioral problems than my daughter (he's more like Top Dog, she's more like Slug). Before reading this book, I thought boot camp might be the answer. However, now I'm recommending that my fiance read this book, too!

The Whipped Parent is a powerful resource simply written and easy for any parent to understand. It's a guide to help parents regain their sanity through learning to change their own thought processes, behaviors and responses. It is key for parents to understand the difference between control and influence and how that difference impacts their relationship with their child. A Parent Who's Been Whipped.......2003-12-05

Kim and Marney have written a book that has been too long in coming for parents with out-of-control children. When my child was a teen (back in the early 90s) there was no help for me, no where to turn, no book to read. I felt like a failure as a parent, thinking it must be my fault that my child was out of control. Kim and Marney's book made me realize that I WAS (and am)a good mother. Anyone with a child who is bordering on oppositional defiance or conduct disorder should definitely read this book. It will be like a livesaver in an ugly storm.

More than a biography.......2004-01-08

This book is a continuation of a previous book also written by Nicholas Kenyon. The previous book was written earlier in Rattle's career and was in need of an addendum considering Rattle's enormous progress as a conductor.

Those looking for a book that reads well and provides one with the detail and information about the rise of Simon Rattle's career will find it here. It begins with his present postion as chief conductor of the berlin Philharmonic and covers his birth and musical upbringing, citing the influences that led Rattle to his career as a conductor. It also outlines both the triumphs and defeats (though few and far between in the "defeats" coumn) of his ascent.

While all this is of course interesting and fascinating, I found the greatest strength of this book is the attempt at explaining what makes Rattle a conductor sought out by the world's top orchestras. There is a careful analysis of his method of studying a score (courtesy of his old teacher John Carewe), his thinking about programming, and his approach to rehearsing an orchestra, as well as his loyalty to the City of Birmingham orchestra despite the calls from much larger and more prestigious orchestras. This is a book that is much more than a mere biography. It has something to share with the casual reader and the professional musician.

Conductors will find this particularly interesting reading.

This awakening-to-consciousness journey laid before the reader is rich and enlightening; painting the pictures of lands and beliefs with a full colored brush.
The true story gives us a look into how Nazi Germany bent and broke both Jewish and Christian people in subtle and shocking ways; ultimately-in the wake of its destruction-sending one young man, whose indoctrination into the Hitler youth estranged him from his own family and the reality of the plight of Jewish countrymen, across nations on a spiritual search for meaning in an exploration of the religions of the world.
Information and insights on Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity broaden the reader along with this pilgrim.
The route from conquered Germany through places like impoverished streets of Bombay, a cave in the Himalayas, ashrams in India, sand stormed deserts in Pakistan, Babylonian excavations in Iraq, the Jordanian border to Jerusalem is filled with richly described encounters, hazards and life lessons. Getting from point A to point B is alternately smooth and tense with risks.
The end leaves one wanting to know more; believing that if peace and reconciliation can be possible for this man, with all his baggage on his search for a meaningful life of peace, then it is more than a nebulous vision for the rest of us with our multi-patterned, cultural valises in tow.
I recommend this book to everyone- if for no other reason than to garner a glimpse at Oskar/Asher's winding paths and how it is in the daily existence of those who we may never meet, in lands we may only read about or see in snatches of media.
This author has sensitively and honestly written this insightful biography which shows practical applications for today's journeys to the possibilities of peace between nations and people with myriad belief systems.
It says so completely that it is not necessary to go down the path of destruction again.
This would be an excellent book for reading groups/ethical societies where discussion is included.

compelling story - well written!.......2004-04-25

This is an amazing story of a man who was in the hitler youth, and became an orthodox Jew living in Israel. The story of his journey - spiritual and physical - is incredible. The book is written so that you feel as if you are experiencing the story with Oskar/Asher. Definitely recommended reading!
