"Sitting at his desk in Havana, Cuba, on March 3, 1784, Don Vizente Manuel de Zespedes y Velasco carefully drafted a short letter acknowledging his appointment as governor of St. Augustine and the surrounding province of East Florida. The formal and modest phrases he penned scarcely revealed his inner sense of pride."
With her opening lines, Tanner begins to rough out a very human image of Zespedes, whose governorship and milieu she goes on to portray with great artistry in this biographical history. East Florida's first governor during the Second Spanish Period, Zespedes set out to reestablish Spanish rule after twenty years of British occupation, to protect his colony from the new United States, the French, the English, and the Indian factions and to cope with myriad internal problems.
Skillfully blending chronological and topical approaches, Tanner deals with Zespedes' arrival in St. Augustine and his problems, with economic and religious issues, border difficulties and defense, census taking, manners and morals, fiestas, and repercussions from the clandestine marriage of his eldest daughter.
The finished work re-creates late eighteenth -century Florida in rich color. Although the historical narrative of the governorship occupies the foreground, Tanner paints in the background with an equally deft touch, focusing on the activities of such figures as Daniel McGirt, Francisco Sanchez, and Alexander McGillivray and sketching intimate vignettes of St. Augustine life.
This new edition of Tanner's 1963 study includes an introduction commissioned from anthropologist Patricia Griffin by the St. Augustine Historical Society.

This is a must book for anyone interested in researching Spanish Florida. Tanner's style will lead you to believe that you are reading a novel rather than a well researched historical manuscript. She brings the life and times of Manuel de Zespedes to life with glimpses of his military as well as personal life. A must book for those that wish to know about Florida's colonial history.

Vastly Inflated Prices, even by 2007 standards.......2007-03-18
I have multiple editions of this book, and I have always enjoyed them. However, after years of collecting autographs, I have come to the conclusion that the prices they list have no basis in reality. They are usually highly inflated. I would guess the prices are what dealers would like to get for their autographs, but I don't think they usually do.

There are no more precious artifacts in human history then the primary sources dealing in the written word. Historic letters, manuscripts and documents are the cornerstones of civilization and the best "collectible" investment on the market. For all too long the "Autograph" Ephemera field has lacked a true and consistant indicator of signed letters, manuscripts and documents value until this new issue of Sanders Price Guide. When a client calls me and asks what the value is of an autographed document I now refer them to this Price Guide - Period. Hats to Richard Saffro, Jim Smith and the Price Guide Researchers.

The other reviews were right on the money. This book is a great find for someone that is looking to do some custom shades and/or curtains. Creativity has never been my strong suit. I am the type of person that moves into an apartment and keeps up the white blinds that are supplied. I buy curtains when necessary, but they are never "eye-catching". So when my husband and I decided to build our first house, I began to stress. I have not sewn since high school and I needed ideas. This book gave me that and more. The instructions are very thorough and easy to follow. The book also has great color pictures as well as fabric and color information. It is a great find for someone totally new to home design to a person that has been doing it for years. I think you will enjoy this book and find it is worth every penny.

I was trying to make Roman shades and none of the patterns or phamplets in the fabric store helped. I borrowed this book from a friend in PA and I just finished my shades. The directions were concise and easy to follow for any level seamstress. I have just ordered my own copy as I think I'll now tackle french pleated curtains for my newly refinished living room. With the help of this book, I'm pretty confident I can do it!!!

This book gives you a lot of ideas, especially if you're a beginner. I found the instruction simple to follow and the instructional pictures, unlike drawings, are very helpful. This book is great for the first time sewers like my self; however, no fancy projects included in this book.

Well, the pictures are pretty..........2005-11-29
As a consumer and soon-to-be first-time homeowner, I borrowed PREFAB: ADAPTABLE, MODULAR, DISMOUNTABLE, LIGHT, MOBILE ARCHITECTURE, by Alejandro Bahamon, from my local library, in hopes of learning more about prefabricated/modular homes.
Although the book's Amazon listing implies that PREFAB is a useful guide for individuals looking to build a prefabricated home ("PreFab will prove to become the definitive reference for architects, contractors, homeowners, and anyone else interested in creating a prefabricated structure"), the author doesn't really offer any practical advice for consumers who are considering building a modular home. Rather, PREFAB seems as if it's geared more towards art or architecture students - it features a number of unusual and/or experimental prefab projects, many of which are NOT single-family dwellings. Some of the modular buildings profiled in PREFAB include bus dwellings, small office buildings, studios, visitor centers, apartment buildings, and pedestrian bridges. Those buildings that are meant as single-family dwellings are highly customized, with little general appeal: cliff houses, tree houses, tiny, 200-square-foot homes, even a "floating island"! Thus, I definitely would NOT recommend this book to the average consumer, who's just looking for practical, real-world information on modular construction.
Although I picked up PREFAB expecting something totally different, it would be unfair to give the book a negative review just because it was not what I anticipated. Yet, even as an art/architecture book, PREFAB is fraught with a number of problems. The book was originally written in Spanish (I assume, given the author's name), and translated into English by Bill Bain. Consequently, the text is absolutely atrocious. I don't know if this is the author's, translator's, editor's, or publisher's fault (or some combination thereof), but the book is almost unreadable! There are a number of grammatical, punctuation, and even spelling errors. Sentences run on and on, and many don't even make any sense at all!
Some examples, taken word-for-word, typos left as-is:
"The Yardbird prototype was constructed in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, where the client and the architect shared common go a is with regerd to the region's landscape, which to a part of the neoclassical architectural legacy of Thomas Jefferson and the developmental center of modern architecture during the first decades of the twentieth century."
"The Studio couldn't be simpler in its desingn. It is a room some 64.5 by 37.5 square feet elevated by raw steel columns a small building is based on standard dimensions and prefabricated building materials."
Huh!?
As if the writing isn't hard enough to read, most of the text is white, printed on a black background. It literally jumps out at the reader in a migraine-inducing optical illusion!
This design issue is particularly puzzling, as the rest of the book is aesthetically pleasing. PREFAB is filled to the brim with color pictures, floor plans, and elevations of the various projects featured within its covers. Many of the buildings are simply breathtaking; even the ones that are bare and minimalist have unique and unusual qualities that make them interesting to the senses, if nothing else.
Unfortunately, the text that accompanies the pictures is sub par (and that's putting it nicely!). I suspect that this is mainly due to the English translation and editing as opposed to sloppiness on the author's part. If you're an architecture student or aficionado who speaks fluent Spanish, try to find a copy of PREFAB in its native language. On the other hand, if you don't speak Spanish or are a consumer looking for practical advice on prefab/modular home construction, steer clear of this book - it will offend both your wallet and your senses!

I am constantly amazed at the magnitude of CeCe Winans musical and spiritual capabilities and I am pleased to say that her gifts do not end there. On A Positive Note is a beautiful piece. In it, there is a very natural and earthy quality that reaches the reader to relate the story CeCe seeks to tell. The flow of the book is very smooth; transitions are made nicely from one subject to the next as she relates her story. I cannot stress enough how the personal the experience of reading this book feels and how natural the language reads. CeCe has done it again. God is consistently working through her in a mighty way.

I read this book and I was so blessed by it. Throughout it, Cece constantly discusses the fact the she was taught to give up the world for God. This blessed me because it is evident in the way that God has blessed her music ministry that if we give up the world for God that he will do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we could ask or think in our lives. It was awesome to read about how God just kept blessing her life because the posture of heart was correct towards him. It was great to read a story about saved artist who had just been taught to live holy and to see the rewards of doing it. I was blessed and truly encouraged through this book.

While reading "On a Positive Note" by CeCe Winans, I was taken back into a time when I myself was growing up, how her childhood memories was very similar to my own. I also grew up in a large family, and reading her book brought back so many memories of my past. Despite all the tribulations and triumphs of her life, she managed to hold on to her spiritual belief, letting it guide her through her every decision in life. "On A Positive Note" has inspired me, lifted me to a higher level of praising the Lord and reminded me to always put God before each decision throughout my life. This book was quite a page turner that filled my heart with laughter, joy, tears, praise, sadness and forgiveness. I was moved to pray for Ronald myself as she astoundingly shared his testimony. My thirteen year old daughter is now reading this wonderful book and I will reccommend it to everyone I know.

Quantum probability and the theory of operator algebras are both concerned with the study of noncommutative dynamics. Focusing on stationary processes with discrete-time parameter, this book presents (without many prerequisites) some basic problems of interest to both fields, on topics including extensions and dilations of completely positive maps, Markov property and adaptedness, endomorphisms of operator algebras and the applications arising from the interplay of these themes. Much of the material is new, but many interesting questions are accessible even to the reader equipped only with basic knowledge of quantum probability and operator algebras.

Insightful,analytical and comprehensive portrait of a loving character.Is a masterpiece. Full of drama,but it was a real life drama.The "parnas" was a sensitive man struggling with his own imaginative fears but valiantly facing the real fear.
A Book to Reckon With.......2000-05-27
Pisa, Italy. July, 1944. As the Nazis and Allies collide, Giuseppe Pardo Roques, lay leader of Pisa's Jewish community, is a refugee in his own home. Struggling to display strength in spite of a bizarre and debilitating neurosis, the cultured, learned and generous Pardo plays host to several others, Jews and Christians both, seeking shelter from the battle. The Parnas reconstructs Pardo's final days and his ultimate confrontation with the Nazis. At once memoir (the author knew the characters), psychological profile, and meditation on good and evil, the book's defining quality is compassion. I'll read it again.
Psychiatric Insight and Storyteller's Gift.......2000-05-24
This is an incredible story.
Silvano Arieti was an extremely gifted, and very well known, psychiatrist. He was born in Pisa, Italy and, as a child, looked to The Parnas--or synagogue leader, Giuseppe Pardo Roques--as a mentor. The Parnas was mentally ill. His illness inspired Arieti's career--which, as it developed, convinced Arieti all the more that "mental illness may...espress the nobility of man."
Arieti dreamed he would one day cure The Parnas, but The Parnas was murdered by the Nazis in WWII. Decades later, Arieti recreates the last days of The Parnas, providing us with a moving potrait of an incredible man in terrible times.
While Arieti's conclusions are profound, this book is definately accessible to the high school reader.
