This study established an intellectual profile of Albert Gallatin through his vision of government's role in a democratic republic and the republic's role in the community of nations. Only through a comprehensive analysis of Gallatin's political and diplomatic activities can the student of history learn to see his actions as expressions of clearly formulated principles. Gallatin was much more involved in the shaping of administrative policy than has been recognized. Moreover, he followed his unique "Gallatinian" approach to domestic policy as well as international diplomacy, always in pursuit of one paramount objective: the preservation of individual liberty within the context of a republic.

Born to an aristocratic Swiss family, Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) immigrated to America in 1780. Elected to Congress in 1795 and serving until 1801, Gallatin fought constantly with the independent-minded first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. He was responsible for the law of 1801 requiring an annual report by the Secretary of the Treasury, and he submitted the first one later that year as Secretary. He also helped create the powerful House Ways and Means Committee to assure Treasury's accountability to Congress by reviewing the Department's annual report concerning revenues, debts, loans, and expenditures.

Appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1801 by President Jefferson and continuing under President James Madison until 1814, Gallatin was in office nearly fourteen years, the longest term of any Secretary in the Department's history. As Secretary, he followed a Hamiltonian course, establishing the independence of the Secretary of the Treasury and institutionalizing the Department structures.

Gallatin considerably reduced the federal debt by setting aside revenue for that purpose, and he revived internal taxes to pay for the War of 1812 but they were not sufficient. Having failed to convince Congress to recharter the First Bank of the United States in 1811, and foreseeing financial disaster, he resigned in 1814. That year Gallatin went to Russia to represent the United States in the peace conference with England and France settling hostilities. The outcome of the conference was the Treaty of Ghent signed in 1814.

ISTANBUL BENEATH MY WINGS.......2001-01-31

"Wings Over Istanbul" is about some historical aviation moments in time; but it's not an "aviation history" book. Life and memories of a pioneer aviator which is famous with his nonstop "world record" flight from New York to Istanbul in the first decades of the century... And of course with a plane unlike the current engineering wonders. Despite reflecting a long cross-section after a couple of years of the famous "first flight" by Wright Brothers, it's more emotional than a history book but more historical than a "remembrance" book. Simply it's a "love story" between the human beings and planes. Technically. Amazing moments, sadly aviation martyrs, step by step improvements and a crowning "world record"... Very enjoyable reading for those who love to visit the aviation milestones one by one.

A Very Good Start.......2007-04-18

This is an excellent place to begin learning about leather bound books. The author is knowledgeable, and the photos are excellent. Not much is covered in depth, but it's a good, basic survey.

Unless you have a chance to check this book out at a bookstore first, OR you're a beginning knitter, don't buy it online. The patterns couldn't be more ordinary, despite the use of color on several. Anyone looking for fun and interesting patterns will be extremely disappointed.

A collection of good, basic sweaters.......2000-12-02

At first glance, Jo Sharp's "Knitting Emporium" may seem rather unimaginative. The most eye-catching sweater is the colorful "Tashkent" sweater pictured on the front of the book. Some of the sweaters inside the book look somewhat like what one could purchase in a Walmart! That was decidedly NOT what I was hoping for. But then, when I took a second and third look throughout the book, I realized that the details of some of these sweaters are unusual but also very classic. There are some very good, wearable necklines (i.e. the "Antipodean" and the "Heather" patterns), and the shape of most of these sweaters are the kind that most body types could wear comfortably and attractively.

There are patterns for both men and women, most of which are extremely classic pullovers, vests, or cardigans. 5 of the 14 patterns are colorful (in the Kaffe Fassett manner), and 7 of the 14 patterns are monochromatic (4 of which have textural interest).

I would have been interested to know more about Jo Sharp's background, and a little about her method of design. Alice Starmore books give the reader something to read as well as patterns to knit, and I have always enjoyed that. But, as this is my first Jo Sharp book, she may have given this information in a prior book.

The book is worth buying if you are looking for basic sweaters that are beautifully designed in a classic manner.

Pass on this one.......2007-01-15

This book was pretty dissappointing. The author did virtually nothing except turn on a tape recorder and let Yank speak, and then transcribe his monolog. The publisher did nothing excpect slap the pages betweeen a softcover wrapper.

The author provided no or very little historical context of the subject or the music; if it's there, then it is so short and shallow that I missed it. The only discussion of other musians and music is what Yank provides.

For example, there is virtually no real description of how this son-of-a-share-cropper learned to play mandolin or develop his style (heavy tremolo) of music. All Yank said is that he got hold of a mandolin and started fooling around with it. This is the sort of basic information that should have been explored in fuller detail.

On the other hand, maybe I was just looking for something else. Perhaps, if you're into studying Southern culture, you'll find this book useful. But even then, you'd better come with some knowledge of the culture of rural West Tennessee in the first half of the 20th century or you'll miss out on a lot of what Yank is describing. Again, the author could have provided supplemental detail and context.

Well done oral history of unsung blues hero.......2001-10-15

Richard Congress has championed the music of the late Yank Rachell, one of the few blues artists to record extensively on the mandolin. Congress has made available some of rachell's hard to fine post-war recordings on his Random Chance label as well as put together Rachell's oral history. The first 100 or so pages are devoted to Rachell's recollections and if some parts are sketchy, its because Rachell's death prevented Congress from fleshing out more details. Rachell's association with John Estes and others in the neglected Jackson, Tennessee music scene is discussed as is his life as a travelling musician, as well as his pursuits of daytime employment unlike others he played with. He recounts playing in St. Louis and then recording, Big Joe Williams and John Lee "Sonny Boy Williamson" and his early recordings as well as moving up to Indianopolis for the last years of his life. The oral history is supplemented by Rich Delgrosso's discussion of Yank's mandolin style, David Evans' distillation of Yank's guitar playing and recollections of those who came under Yank's spell including Henry Townsend and Charlie Musselwhite. A full discography of Yank's recordings, both as a leader and an accompanist is provided. In summary, this is a very nicely put together volume that provides us with a window into a slice of the blues past often neglected.

Richard Congress' Blues Mandolin Man provides a biography of the life and music of Yank Rachell, a 1960s blues mandolin performer. This is his first biography, and one of the few books to discuss the mandolin instrument's contributions to blues.

A Must Read!.......2006-03-31

In the United States and around the world the thinking about Israel and Palestines is based on stereotypes, and on the people who "make the news". Much of it feeds fears and de-humanizes people on both sides who are striving to lead normal lives.

Similarly, discussions of women in development tend to forget that women live, work, interact with men - in their families and their communities.

For anyone interested in the real life situations of Palestinians, including women, this is a really wonderful book. Through the stories of 3 pairs of mothers and daughters, the book introduces the reader to experiences in the last 50 years as well as to the current situation.

I visited Palestine (Ramallah only) in November 2005 - and was looking for some introduction to Palestinians and to gender issues. This book was a phenomenal asset. And while I failed to complete the book while I was there, I have eagerly continued reading it - right up to the last page. It is extremely "readable".

I encourage anyone interested in the region, or interested in gender and social change, to read this book. I am buying several copies to give to friends.

Women Know, but Societies Deny.......2005-05-31

Even this book had been published in 1996 but women still suffer from many society diseases which our two authers try to bring into the surface.
The book also give us a chance to observe how the Palestiniane women are aware of the whole situation, even the illiterate mothers.
Authers are too smart to choose these women from different villages and different style of thinking.
It's a book addresses the foreign reader firstly, who knows little about this society. It is also send a message to all societies to be careful, because these women are not only live in Palestine, but all societies
