Rough Guide Editors: please read this review!.......2007-08-31

Not bad, but there are 2 changes the editors must make for it to be far more helpful:

1) The index must be improved. For example, of the dozens of museums described (very well!) in the book, not a single one of them is listed in the index! I found it frustrating trying to find information for a museum that I remembered was described SOMEWHERE in the book.

2) The Athens "Main Tourist Office" is incorrectly located on the map (p. 128). It is not too far away, but a miss is as good as a mile when you are using the map to try to find it.

This book is so extensive it is actually kind of hard to use.
I wish they would break these books into smaller volumes. Maybe one for Athens, one for islands, one for southern Greece, one for Northern Greece. Something like that.
Also, for American readers: with this series, I think many or all the writers are from Britain. So when you read of a good restaurant, you have to take it with a grain of salt. It may actually be good or, kind of average.

Not up to date.......2007-03-23

Watch out, even though the edition date is 2006, many of the references in the guide point to pre-OLympic (2004) information. Not very useful. All in all, one is better off using Google for information,rather than travel guides.

Excellent Guide to Greece.......2006-08-02

I bought this updated version of the Rough Guide to Greece. It is the 11th edition. I last used the 10th edition on a recent trip to Greece (June 2006) and found the guide to excellent. I left it behind to lighten the luggage somewhat. I wanted to replace it with the new edition and hope to return to Greece.

worth the price.......2001-10-20

Although limited in periods covered (stops at 1850), this is a handy, easy to carry reference. Kovel's may be more extensive, but the additional info is often not what you need in the middle of the antique mall checking out a possible purchase. I find I use both, write notes in both, and have many pieces I know are American and I can't find the marks in either. So, what the heck, for ten bucks it's worth having with you BEFORE you buy.

A very useful reference.......2000-03-20

For the time period covered (1650-1850) this is a very useful, almost exhaustive reference. I turn to it when I need to identify a hallmark, and find the illustrations to be very helpful. I thought it was a good buy.

Misleading Title.......2000-01-01

Not until you open the book to the first chapter do you find out that the marks are limited to the period 1650--1850. No marks after 1850.

Good basic book.......2007-01-17

A good basic book for anyone wanting to learn to hand quilt. Lots of pictures and very clear directions. The pictures are mainly black and white but it does not detract from the effectiveness of the various lessons.

I learned a few tricks that helped me to understand some of the things I was doing incorrectly and it has helped to improve my skills.

Wonderful!.......2000-06-03

I love quilting, although I have only been learning the art for the past year. Quilting does not have a tradition in my family -- and this book was the wonderful teacher I had, since I did not have family who could teach me.

This book walks through step by step the process of "no-stress" hand quilting. From preparing the fabric, the controversey of knots in patchwork, to small projects to work on. A wonderful reference book for the beginning quilter, like myself (and with techniques that could also help more advanced quilters).

I'd give it less than a star if I could..........2007-09-04

I am expecting my first baby in October and purchased this book as a way to be proactive in maintaining the strong bond my husband and I now enjoy; what I received was a tome of negativity and pessimism, a horribly fear-mongering piece of work which paints a dismal picture of marriage post-baby. I strongly urge you to think twice before spending your time or money on this book.

Stereotypes aren't useful .......2005-03-25

This book was a disappointment. The author is so deeply entrenched in gender stereotyping that she offers advice like this: "Praise your partner's strengths. If your husband does a good job quieting the baby, tell him so. If your wife demonstrates selflessness and patience as she cares for the baby, let her know you admire or appreciate those qualities" (33). Thus, the father gets praise for quieting the baby, but the mother must be "selfless" and "patient" in order to earn praise. Even my husband laughed heartily at this one! I was, frankly, shocked that a book written in 2000 could offer advice based on such simplistic male/female gender divisions. Sure, it acknowledges that new parents are exhausted and that marriage is a challenge, but it offered no advice I found useful.

Every Couple Must Read This!.......2004-12-07

After reading this book, I felt so much better and better prepared about the impact of a child on marriage. I have several friends that ended up divorced due to issues that were complicated after having children. Even though I am fairly young, it amazes me the myth that continues to thrive with marriages is "if we have kids, it will fix everything". The author deals with all aspects of the impact of starting a family on marriage from conception through birth. This is a book to keep as a reference guide.

Full of true facts.......2003-11-22

This is a pretty accurate picture of what happens after the birth of a baby, a major event in a couple's life which not only puts a lot of strain on marriages, but also gives overwhelming joy to its parents. It's not easy for anyone I should guess. A lot of homework was done and great efforts were put into the writing of this book, but at times it seems a wee bit repetitive. However it is very useful, and offers great advice in saving marriages and remedies for everyday obstacles, it also reminds you that you are not alone. Another point to add is that the author demonstrates a great sense of principles which are the basis for a good marriage.

See.... I'm not crazy.......2000-07-27

I thought this book was not only very well written and well researched, but it made me sigh a huge sigh of relief to know that I was not alone in my frustrations during my earlier years as a young mother. It not only justified my feelings but at the end of each chapter gave me helpful hints on ways to deal with the challanges of new parenthood. Now that my children are 12, 10 and 3, I still found the book relevant, because alot of the same challenges apply, you just have found ways to work around them or work them out. Although starting a family is a magical and exciting time, too many people go at it with no preparation or idea as to what to expect. We go through all sorts of classes and excercises to get us through the delivery, but little or no preparation is done for the changes, physical, emotional, hormonal that take place in your body in addition to the changes that your relationship goes thru. This book helps you to prepare for and handle the changes.

An excellent introduction to boh the life and the work.......2001-08-05

Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment (NA 421912) afforded me.

Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.

His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).

My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

By the way, the listing above of this work as "abridged" is simply inaccurate since the text (I am told by the publicity person at Naxos) was written specifically for this recording and is by definition "unabridged."
