BUY MAUI REVEALED INSTEAD.......2007-08-17

I bought both Maui for Dummies (Feb 2007 edition) and The Unofficial Guide to Maui (May 2007 edition) and my friend got a Maui Revealed book only and was MUCH MORE INFORMED than I was with my TWO books. I highly recommend either of these books (Maui for Dummies was the better of the two in my mind) but only AFTER you have already purchased Maui Revealed! Also, make sure you are always getting the newest edition on these books...it matters

After reading Frommers and Maui Revealed this book had nothing new to offer. A big disapointment. I left it in the hotel room.

While Homel's book is helpful in giving a general idea of a fishing rod's value, there are some gaps in information. For one, the material is four or five years old and collectible rods have skyrocketed in price in that time frame. So the dollar amounts placed on rods are not very realistic. Secondly, I have found that there are sizes and models of fly rods that are not included in the listings of the various rod makers or manufacturers. This can be a little frustrating when one has purchased, or is about to purchase a rod and cannot find any reference to it in the book.

This book was perfect for the avid rod collector. The photos and detail were great and easy to compare your own rods to theirs listed in the book. Highly recommend.

I have 7 antique/vintage fishing rods and none of them were in there. Also, the prices were separate from the descriptions so I couldn't tell what I was pricing.

GREAT REFERENCE FOR THE BAMBOO ROD COLLECTOR.......2001-07-22

This book is a great reference for the serious rod collector or antique dealer that is in need of expert information about evaluating old bamboo rods. The author includes a good sampling of close-up B&W photographs covering many of the historic rod makers. Old patent drawings are used to explain various rod designs and component functions. A comprehensive chapter is devoted to common rod defects to look for and how each one might lower the collectible value of a rod. The back of the book contains a 32 page rod price guide listing which is helpful in formulating an approximate appraisal of value. A very worthwhile addition to any tackle collector's library of reference materials.

Ok book to start with, but need more...........2000-11-21

Got this book to help me understand more about a number of rods bought at auction. Although helpful, it spoke more about what a perfect rod should be. It has a price guide, but limited pictures to cross reference to. Most collectors will not run into the perfect rod so it was hard to compare. Book is not tailored for the person new to collecting rods. It would be better for the new person with more pictures and more educational background.

Too Much on Embellishments.......2005-10-04

I bought this book to get some ideas on how to use my new serger in sewing. I was taken in by the subtitle of this book.

I was disappointed to find that this book is almost entirely about embellishments. The embellishments are also things that I remember from years ago and aren't done much now.

I returned this book within days of receiving it as it was basically useless to me.

Not as much as I'd hoped for.......2002-12-07

It's a good book with lots of reference, but it's primarily decorative stuff, like fancy buttonholes, etc. I don't own a serger, don't care if I ever do, but I was impressed with doing embroidery with the machine I do have. I don't use it as much as I thought I would, but perhaps I'll take another look at it and see how I can utilize some of them, like the eyelets.

Chock-a-block!.......2002-02-17

This has loads of tips and tricks for both sewing machine and serger that would be very helpful to anyone with either/both, and is good on its own for serger information (compared to serger books which often include too much information on the "high-end" coverlock sergers few of us own). The techniques are well illustrated and the stitches themselves, rather than garments, photographed. This is a good one-stop-shopping manual for anyone returning to sewing after a many-year hiatus, with the machines so high-tech now it's like starting from scratch. Full of great, useful ideas. You didn't know your little machine could do so much!

Great Ideas!.......2000-10-04

This book has perhaps been mis-named. It's really a book of various sewing techniques, mostly decorative, that you can accomplish with a sewing machine or serger. Everything is clearly illustrated with color illustrations -- in fact, every page is in color. There are few photographs, which would have been more appropriate for more detailed procedures like hemstitching and fagotting techniques (see Carol Laflin Ahles, Fine Machine Sewing). If you want some fresh ideas for your garments, or feel the need to give your sewing machine or serger a complete and vigorous workout, this is the book for you.

This book has been long overdue, especially for those of us who have become jaded by 'similar' sewing reference books. This book provides ideas, clear, concise and well illustrated instructions for both new and some very old techniques. I was instantly inspired!

Not just for vacation homes.......2003-03-03

In addition to the usual sort of vacation homes people usually imagine, this book also includes a number of designs for more traditional first homes (ranch designs are prevalent) with just an added touch of luxury and leisure. Plans and information throughout most of the book are clear and give good detail. If there's a short-coming, it's that the "showcase" homes in the color section skimp on the detail you find in the rest of the book. One would think it would be the other way around... Some readers might be put off for a dozen or so pages being sourced out to Linwood Home for a bit of quasi-advertising, but they're perfectly appropriate here, if a little short on detail (one of the floorplans clearly doesn't match the pictures or description given -- looks like an editing error). The designs themselves are attractive overall. Moreso than other books in this series, I found a large number of the plans worth a look rather than just plodding through one after another searching for the rare gem.

Greta Nagel, author of The Tao of Teaching, turns the spotlight of Taoist wisdom on the seemingly insoluble problems of parenting. As in her previous book, the text is divided into 81 chapters, like the Tao Te Ching itself. Each chapter has a heading from the Tao, followed by a page or so of explication, and these passages in turn are followed by real-life illustrative stories from four families Nagel interviewed. The family stories help to flesh out the philosophical bones, showing how real individuals solved (or sometimes failed to solve) their problems. As you would expect from a book based on Lao-Tsu, there is great emphasis on calmness, flexibility, listening closely to others and respecting your own capacity for common sense and good judgment. The whole exercise will seem a bit earnest to some people, but the format is user-friendly, and the basic lessons (e.g., "Tranquility is more important than perfection" and "When you don't know, say so") deserve repetition. Fascinatin' look at songwriter's life and craft..........2002-05-31

An excellent short bio of the wondrously talented songwriter who had little musical education yet produced hundreds of great popular songs between 1908 and the end of the century (He died at 101.) As a non-musician, I didn't always understand the author's explanations of why a particular standard broke new lyrical or musical ground, but I found the information riveting anyway. Berlin, the immigrant, became a symbol of the American Dream and deservedly so. Anyone who cherishes American music should read this.

A True Master At His Craft.......2000-09-14

While this book doen't cover as much of Berlin's personal life as does Laurence Bergreen's biography entitled As Thousands Cheer, Furia's biography does cover in great detail the background involved in a number of Berlin's songs. "What'll I Do" was written just after the loss of his mother. However, Berlin said people read too much personal stuff whenever he writes a ballad. I like the fact that the author includes the lyrics of a number of Berlin's songs. Despite being a prolific song writer, Berlin often felt insecure about his ability to continue to write songs. Following his first big hit, "Alexander's Ragtime Band" he always felt he had to continue to follow up with another big hit. He was able to continue to adjust to the music tastes of the country until rock and roll came in the mid-fifties. He became a very private man in his later years and felt people no longer cared about his music. Despite these thoughts, his contributions to American music remain timeless and will remain with us long after the latest fad of music passes by. To think that so many great songs came from this one man simply boggles the mind.

a spiffy tunesmith.......2000-02-02

The creativity of Irving Berlin was amazing. This is a story of an interesting life, but also points out that, eventually, time erases foundations just like eroding soil or dripping water. Now, I would like to find a source to hear all of his songs as his number one concern was always quality. At times he would create a song in minutes, but it could also take years. As with most artists, he was continually looking for verification that his output was good. The appendix lists ALL of his tunes as well as other interesting data. A fine read.
