A Great Overview - Start Here then Get Details Elsewhere.......2005-06-12

This massive book (691 pages) manages to touch on just about every major cruise ship and port of call that there is in cruising. You get a little taste of everything.

First, you get about 100 pages on the basics of cruising - how to get a good price, what to wear, how a cruise ship works. That will get you started on what a cruise trip is all about.

Next, you get 300 pages on the actual cruise ships. While this seems like a ton of pages, they actually only do 1-2 page reviews of each ship in most cases. In many cases it's a review not just of that ship but of that ship class. For example if Carnival has 4 ships that are similar, you could get one review that covers all 4 ships, with small mentions of things that stand out on a given ship. Since no ship is REALLY identical to other ships, this isn't great.

That being said, I really found the information given here to be FAR more valuable than in similar books. They actually review based on real information from real humans, not just copying from the cruise line's book. They tell you about "ridiculous 108 square feet" cabins. They warn you that on the Promenade deck, you're likely to have joggers running past (and peering in) your windows. They warn you which areas are noisy, they point out which lounges are usually not found by the masses and therefore are perfect places to escape from the noise.

The rest of the book is a quite good write-up of the main port locations. Many people travel in to a port town and consider the port town part of their vacation. This area includes maps of the area, what to see, directions to the docks, and other information.

I was a little put off by the 2005 in the title, implying that you had to buy a new book every year. On one hand you want to get a relatively new set of information - but even with this being "2005" I found errors in pricing. Obviously they can't update every single page in this every year. So it's a trade-off. Again, the book provides good guidelines but should never be taken as absolutely true.

There is obviously no way that one book can cover ALL information on all towns, ships and ports!! Again, this is a sampler. You look through to find out which items appeal to you. Then you should get a full book on that ONE TOPIC. If you're going to Bermuda, don't expect this book to give you the full details. You should get a book on Bermuda.

However, for what this book does, it does it very well. It takes you from the point of not knowing about cruising at all to the point of knowing what your options are and having a top-5 list to persue further. At that point it's time to go to those cruise line websites, to go the forums, and to get some books on specific ports. That will get you the detailed information you need to make your final decision, and to enjoy your cruise!

As a person looking to take a cruise for the first time I found most of the info I was looking for in this book. It contains very detailed descriptions, especially of the various cruise lines and the type of activities, food and service that they offer. Of course, the opinions expressed are of the authors only and your taste may vary considerly. But overall they give a fairly objective assessment of the wide range of cruising experiences offered. Recommended.

A great place to start.......2004-12-26

Whether you are a seasoned cruiser and are looking for something new or have never cruised before this book is very handy. I have cruised three times but was not sure where I wanted to visit next and which cruise line I wanted to take to get me there so I borrowed Cruises & Ports of Call 2005 from the library. I spent the greater part of an afternoon studying cruise lines, ships, itineraries, and cabins. It immensely helped me choose which cruise was right for me because it went into a very detailed description of the ins and outs of each port and line out there.

this was a pretty good guide geared towards cruisers--only buy if you're interested on going on a big name cruise ship. port information was good for st. john, st. thomas, barbados, and aruba. the info on martinique was not good. the author described martinique's main town as cosmopolitan, people dress like paris, fort du france looks like new orleans. i don't know when he went to martinique. martinique was seedy and falling apart.

Antoinette Matlins' buying guides for jewelry and gemstones are excellent, and "Diamonds" is no exception. Perhaps because she is a gemologist consultant, Ms. Matlins excels in anticipating what consumers want to know and makes sure her guides answer those questions. The paucity of color photographs, which are limited to a 12-page insert, may be "Diamonds" weakness. People like to look at pictures of sparkling gems, but the abundant information in the guide is easy to understand without photographs. And photos are probably less essential in a diamond guide than in a guide of colored gemstones, since there are fewer varieties. Many of the most interesting and popular cuts are pictured, so the essential photos are included.

After explaining how to examine a stone through a loupe, Matlins moves on to the meat of the guide in Part 2: There is a chapter for each of the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, carat weight. Illustrations of ideal cut, different cuts, faulty cuts, and how they affect price are especially interesting. The chapter on color includes discussion of color grading systems and the HPHT process to improve color. These are followed by chapters on diamond grading reports and how that information affects price, and common types of misrepresentation and what you can do to avoid being misled, including discussion of fake diamonds and how to detect them. One chapter is dedicated to comparing prices for round, brilliant-cut diamonds, so that we can see the relative effects of the 4Cs on price. Another chapter addresses color and color enhancement in fancy diamonds, with a retail price guide and sample gem grading reports.

The last 2 parts of "Diamonds" include descriptions of common diamond settings, advice on what to ask when shopping for a diamond, what to consider, and what to get in writing on your bill of sale, as well as advice on finding a good jeweler, gemologist, appraiser, or insurer, caring for diamonds, and a little about the Gemprint diamond identification system. This book provides more detail about diamond cuts, enhancements, and how to detect a fake than Fred Cuellar's "How to Buy a Diamond" guide. Antoinette Matlins' approach is more hands-on, emphasizing the consumer looking at diamonds through a loupe, whereas Cuellar expects that you will rely on machines to analyze the diamonds but offers more guidance on the shopping experience itself -guidance that is inextricably entwined with promotion for his own business, however.

I have most of Antoinette Matlins books and I give them all five stars. If you are interested in learning about or are planning to buy a diamond for any reason, I would read this book first!!
I recently purchased the book "Diamond Buying Guide" and had not realized how involved and complicated it is to understand the differences in the evaluation of diamonds. A particular diamond I thought was a great deal before reading this book, however, I learned was not a good deal at all. The purchase would have been a poor investment. Thanks to this book I gained enough confidence and knowledge to explore the diamond market and I purchased a beautiful diamond ring for my wife. I had the diamond ring appraised by a reputable appraiser and I felt even better when she informed me that my purchase was as represented and the purchase was at a very good price. The appraiser was impressed with how much I new about diamonds. I was proud to inform her it was because of this book. The book is easy reading, informative, and was helpful to me. Thanks!

Nice collection of recipes for potpourri and sachets. Some ofthe ingredients are tough to find but I found most via the internet for the couple I've tried so far. Last half of the book is on flower drying, arraging and wreaths - not really my thing but I really enjoyed the first half.

This is one reference book that I read cover to cover, not wanting to miss a single wonderful idea. I bought the book mainly because I have a huge rose garden and wanted potpourri recipes, but I was enraptured by every chapter, including making sachets, door hangings, and dried arrangements, and the section on the centuries-old "meanings" that have been attached to many flowers. There is even an intriquing recipe for making "wet" potpourri, a concoction that I had never heard of before but now intend to try! This book is beautiful, nicely organized, and well written. I could almost smell the scents and see the colorful gardens as I read. A must have selection.

Like the other books that have been put out my Ohrbach and Milo this book is joy! It is filled with beautiful photos of ways to use one of natures most beautiful creations - the rose. It includes recipes for things such as teas and potpourri and includes other ideas for lovely items that make perfect gifts or decorations for your home. The imformation is presented in a simple and thoughtfull manner so that it is relatively simple to complete the projects shown. The ideas are realistic - they are things that you really would do . There is also good information on how to care for roses in the garden and as well as great arrangement suggestions. All in all I really love this book. I'll be ordering at least 2 more since it will be the perfect mothers'day or easter gift. A must have for all of those who appreciate the beauty of roses!

Love This Bono Book!!!!!.......2005-01-27

I really enjoyed this book, as a fan for over 25 years I was delighted to read this biography! I recommend :)

Objective Biography.......2003-06-16

For any fan, the biography of their idol is usually found wanting. As a U2 fan and Bono enthusiast, it's difficult for me to give a good review on a biography of Bono simply because it's irrelevant for me to own a biography on Bono. For the obsessive fan, there's rarely any new information that i haven't already heard; also, biography's on living people are already hard to judge simply because they're obsolete the day they're released.

All of that aside, this book was a great addition to my U2 collection. Jackson presents a well-rounded look at the rock star's life, focussing mostly on his social work. Of course, if i had written this book it would have been gushing with admiration and fan-boy emulation. the fact that it's not proves that it's a superior, well-written account written for anybody on the reader spectrum, long-time fans and non-fans alike.

My only complaint is the lack of focus on Bono's spiritual side. This book almost gives the impression that Bono's endeavors are purely socially and politically motivated, almost without any transcendent consideration. Of course, enough has been written and discusssed about Bono's spirituality, so perhaps a fresh take on his life story thus far is something fans can use. However, for a social and spiritual balance, i recommend reading Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2, although that succumbs to several of the inherent problems with fan biographies.

The Magic Worlds of Bernard Malamud.......2002-04-11

Professor Avery has performed a great service by revealing the extraordinary contributions of Professor Malamud. I must confess that I had read very little of the author's work. If I had been awakened at 3:00 A.M. and asked about him, I would have said that he was a celebrated American Jewish writer. Dr. Avery reveals him to be much more than that. He should be classed with masters of world literature, involved with but not dependent on ethnicity or religion.
Evelyn Avery takes us on an excursion exploring all aspects of Malamud's work. She begins with her personal friendship with the man extending from 1971 until his death. She then offers analyses of the author and his work by his son Paul and by five other colleagues who knew the author on a personal and social level. She goes on to present essays by five scholars who knew Malamud on a professional level. She then offers six analyses of the themes in Malamud's fiction. One of these by Evelyn Avery compares Malamud's work to that of Cynthia Ozick. The book concluded with a select bibliography, a contributor's list and an index.
When you are through with those Magic Worlds you ought to know Bernard Malamud on a very intimate level. Certainly Professor Avery has enriched American literature by familiarizing her readers with a writer who transcends the limited role of "Jewish authorship."

Anyone who enjoys the stories of Bernard Malamud will love this extraordinary collection of essays.Written by people closest to him-- his son, his friends, his colleagues-- we become acquainted with Malamud on a personal level. Anecdotes and reminiscenses bring out what matters most to Malamud. And knowing what an artist values most is key to understanding his life's work.

Beyond becoming acquainted and enamored of this man's values, I learned from scholars about recurring themes, archetypes, and personality traits found in all his stories. All of this, of course, helps one understand and enjoy the stories even more.

In the words of Cynthia Ozick Bernard Malamud was a "Master" of American Jewish literature. I agree. I also think this book is a wonderful tribute to his memory.

Editor Evelyn Avery is one of our most important Malamud scholars whose work on the author extends back to her early (1979). The new book has a comprehensive introduction and an excellent collection of essays on Malamud's fiction by top literary scholars including Avery herself, Daniel Walden, Sanford Pinsker, and Lillian Kremer. The subjects range from Zen Buddhism and Yiddish Archetypes to Universal Menschen in the fiction. The book also has Paul Malamud's memoir on his father, Cynthia Ozick's "Remembrances," and Joel Salzberg's discussion of Malamud's correspondences. Annotated bibliography is very helpful. It's a terrific read!

The Malamud story.......2006-02-08

There is a low- key quality to the Malamud story. It often makes it ways quietly , at times with a Yiddish -English voice. A Malamud story can often make you smile, and has little perceptions and ironies. But it can also have grotesqueries in it, of incident or character. A Malamud story is always seeking somehow the heart of the human, and this it often finds in varieties of sadness and disappointment. Illusions, and dreams often turn reality into unexpected meetings. In Malamud 's most famous story, "The Magic Barrel" there is a picture of how poor and strained human hearts in longing , hope and fail.
