INDIANA's BISHOP: "God Terrifies us with Freedom".......2006-03-07
From Michael Coyner's personal Litany for facing change, with words that provide strengthening for many in the church family and those serving on the Bishop's Cabinet:
"We pray for security, but God terrifies us with freedom."
The immense size of Coyner's new area of North & South Dakota is daunting; the diversity of the people amazes, as does the facility of Dakotans to act as though Native Americans exist only in old 'Western' films. Native Americans have maybe 14 words for "snow", and Bishop Coyner thought during his first winter that even more descriptive words were needed! Blizzards were followed by snowmelt and floods - - leaving FIFTY THOUSAND homeless. It isn't difficult to imagine that people in the Dakotas are always fearing the 'next' winter.
Did you know that the sunflower head standing tall can be harvested as long as the valuable head is still above the snow? I wonder how many Dakota parents embroider this truth somewhat to teach their children about survival, and to be stalwart? (Matthew 6: "Tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today" . . . compare with John Bunyan's words "He who would Valiant be . . . " set to the music of Vaughan Williams & sung in St. Paul's Cathedral London. (# B00002EIUG)
Following a 'learning experience' with vandalism, the Bishop prayed: "Protect us from vandals who seek to deface; but PROTECT US EVEN MORE FROM IRRELEVANCE & inability to proclaim your good grace." In times of trouble, God will launch us to use our energy & imagination to "overcome" - - with the best examples coming from black sisters & brothers. In the most poignant chapter of all, "Sap on the Family Tree," Bishop Coyner states that "Racism has led us to disregard our common humanity." His ancestor owned a slave named "Sall" valued at $200. and he now has that to ponder. For each of us to ponder are other chapters: "Pavement Ends," "Sandbags," "Connected by the Inner Net," "Remote Starting the Church," "Celebrating Small Successes," "The Prisoner's Note."
How empty the lives of those who do not make 'eye contact'. That sad fact goes back to experiences early in life when gentle, sometimes challenging words spoke by my father when offering the elements of communion, always with loving eyes, speaking always with kindness. This bishop has demonstrated such kindness. When receiving communion from him early in the year (2006) I 'flubbed'! He continued to encourage me by gesture & kind eyes, and that was true kindness to someone feeling the earthquake of leukemia.
Reviewer mcHAIKU will close with a part of the bishop's prayer, (p.132): "Thanks for those who pray for ME each day, who pray I will follow your way HOPEFULLY." "Guide us, direct us and show us your ... way," but please . . . DON'T avoid detours!
Helpful.......2002-06-20
Mike has been a friend of mine for years. He and I were ordained in the same class in our Annual Conference. However, I believe knowing him has helped me assess this work. The devotions are very thoughtful and the reflection of a well-trained pastoral mind. The stories show the a very compassionate human being who can see the hand of God in the work of people. Thanks Mike.
A Trip Worth Taking.......2000-10-23
Though probably best read in small doses for proper assimilation and reflection, I found myself compelled to keep reading page after page of this wonderful collection of meditations. But donÕt let the term meditations throw you. There is nothing dry or boring about them. Bishop Coyner has a wonderful way of using the everyday events of our lives and how we react to them as reflections upon our relationships not only with each other, but with our Creator as well. I never felt that I was being preached to, but needed to be reminded of the need to "shave my head" when called to do so, learned a wonderful new word (Uffda!), and discovered that El Nino is not a bad thing for everyone. There is so much more to share, but some journeys we each have to make ourselves. This is definitely a trip worth taking.
Book Description
Messier employs the new audit approach currently being used by auditing professionals. This new approach is a direct result of the demands of Sarbanes-Oxley, which has changed the way auditors do their jobs. The new auditing approach emphasizes understanding the entity (i.e., the organization or business being audited) and its environment (i.e. industry), and then assessing the business risks faced by the entity and how management controls those risks. This new audit process focuses on business processes instead of accounting cycles. This unique and innovative approach has been developed in response to changing market dynamics. The systematic approach, referred to in the subtitle of the text, reflects the early introduction of three basic concepts that underlie the audit process: materiality, audit risk, and evidence; this allows Messier to build upon this model in subsequent chapters. These are central to everything an auditor does and a unique feature of Messier. As such, this approach helps students develop auditor judgment, a vital skill in today’s auditing environment.

New method of presentation needs to be refined during the next edition.......2006-05-02
I have just finished a course that used this textbook. To me, it is clear that auditing has undergone a dramatic change. That is, this book lacks clarity and specificity.
My bias, however, is that I have a hard time believing that auditors are concerned with a bussiness' control environment and its understanding of management's response to risk factors.
Instead, I believe that auditors still need to spend time "verifying amounts and tracing journal entries to source documents." Those tasks seem monumental enough for an audit engagement.
I left the class wondering, "What do auditors do?" In conclusion, I am not sure that I could perform any audit procedures beyond bank reconciliations and confirmation letters after reading this book. Yet, I do have an understanding of the framework and justification for why we need auditors.
To the book's credit, I did learn how to assess risks, use the audit risk model, make preliminary judgments about materiality, and, in a general way, relate an audit procedure to the management assertion it is supposed to test.
If you want an epistemology of auditing, read this book. If you would rather begin learning how to do auditing, this book will not be helpful.
Book Description
Messier is the only textbook that combines risk analysis with a cycles approach. Messier uses a cycles approach that introduces the audit risk model early and uses the audit risk model as an outline for all of the cycle chapters. This unique and innovative approach has been developed in response to changing market dynamics. The systematic approach used in the subtitle for the text reflects the early introduction of three basic concepts that underlie the audit process: materiality, audit risk, and evidence. These are central to everything an auditor does. As such, this approach facilitates student development of auditor judgment, a vital skill in today's auditing environment.

This book makes auditing as fun as possible.......2001-05-14
I used this book for an auditing class and I got a lot out of it. The book sets each chapter up in an understandable, and digestable way.The tables and charts are excellent summaries of the reading and it is entirely possible to just skip the reading and memorize those. Each chapter has thought-provoking questions at the end and activities that are helpful in analyzation. This book takes you from the first step in auditing to the way to fill out the audit report. I have fond feelings for this book.

A great resource!.......2001-05-22
This book met a lot of my expectations by being very portable, very well-illustrated, and full of good descriptions of the merchandise one is likely to find in London and Paris flea markets. "Antiquing" is a very visual experience for me, and having plenty of photographs to whet my appetite for the various shops was a real plus. The book was useful too in helping me plot which days to attend which markets. Even if the merchandise changes and vendors sometimes move, there is enough general information that stays constant for this to be a useful guide for several years. The two-for-one format--London and Paris in one book--is also fun. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the maps could have been better. Otherwise, a great resource!
Adventurous Shopper's Delight!.......2000-10-26
Antique and Flea Markets of London and Paris is a book serious shoppers will love. While spending several summer months in London, I have visited a number of the markets described. The authors are right on target, and the photos are enjoyable. I learned about many features I've missed, and read about several new places to try on the next trip. The book realizes that shoppers are people, not machines, and tells a little about the market's surrounding area, especially places to stop for a snack and a rest.
I'm not as familiar with Paris, but if the Paris section is even close to being as accurate and useful as the London section, it will save shopping time and hassle across the channel, as it will in London.
This is not "the" book for your trip if you need a complete guide book. If you like antiques and markets, however, you will love this book.

Book Description
Based on Ken & Jasmyn KlarfeldÂ's experiences from JasmynÂ's early childhood to present day, He Said, She Said: A Father-Daughter Perspective offers a unique view of this sometimes difficult relationship. Since KlarfeldÂ's daughter exhibited the qualities of an out-of-control teen, it took perseverance and patience to learn how to understand her perspective. He Said, She Said offers a distinctive format by recounting eventsÂfrom childhood to adolescenceÂfrom both the father and daughterÂ's point of view. These differing viewpoints effectively tell both sides of the story and give you an inside look at just how drastically different parents and children think. For families who face the same difficulties, He Said, She Said illustrates the steps Klarfeld and his daughter took to help turn her life around. Her success story will inspire you to make the necessary changes in your relationship with your children, helping you to better understand your childrenÂ's behavior on a variety of issues.
"As a marriage and family therapist I found this book to be a good example of the significance of family dynamics in the raising of teenagers. In today's world it is becoming increasingly more difficult for parents and teens to make the journey through adolescence. I applaud Mr. KlarfeldÂ's willingness to share his family's struggle in such an open and honest way. " ÂLynne Harr, MA, a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
ÂA rare glimpse into the realities of parenting and being parented. Both father and daughter reveal the struggles, joys and separate realities of their relationship with authentic down to the bone honesty. ÂDr. Robyn Wallace-Blanchard PhD NCSP Educational Psychologist

What a way to learn from others experiences!.......2006-06-05
He Said, She Said is the story of a father's point of view vs a daughter's point of view on how they saw their relationship over the years. I found it totally enlightening and quite surprising at just how different their points of view were. I wish I could have read this book before my daughter was born.
The Klarfelds have done a marvelous job of showing us all just how different our outlooks can be. There was warmth, sadness, and humor in their words but most of all a lesson to be learned. What I found important was the love throughout the whole book.
Although Ken Klarfeld has two adult children and two adopted school age children he is a licensed foster parent in the state of California. Daughter Jasmyn is a single mom and a full time student.
I would highly recommend this book to all parents and all teens starting at an early age.
Raising Kids by Hindsight.......2006-03-01
Reviewed by Beverly Pechin for Reader Views (3/06)
This is not another "How to Raise Your Kids" Instruction Book, written by those who have no children but all the knowledge of raising them because they read about it in some text book. I tire easily of those with degrees in child rearing who have never experienced the actual thing first hand, so my expectations when first looking at this type of book weren't that high. I figured " Great, another know it all doctor who is going to tell you how to raise your kids"; instead I began reading a true parent's ordeal with raising a daughter who began her life well-adjusted and nearly 'perfect' only to find nothing but a troubled life ahead.
The book is written in two perspectives, the father's and then the daughter's. Each chapter deals with a new step in the daughter's life as she grows but from the very beginning you see how quickly the adult's version of what happened differs from the child's. It gives you a whole new insight to what it's like growing up in a broken/mixed family. In what seems to be today's " norm" of divorce and step-parents. While everything seemed perfect from the parent's stand-point, the child tells her views on how she felt during these times. She shows aspects of how everyday life isn't so every day when you're a child. What I loved most was, this young lady was not a troubled child. She was every parent's dream in the beginning. She excelled in her studies, had good solid friendships and was raised in a loving atmosphere. Somehow, she still took a wrong turn and the insight this book provides helps you see where those turns were. It's like child-rearing 101, but with hindsight. From a parent's perspective, it's what we all wish we had known before hand.
Ken was a divorced father of two young children. He was in a relationship with a woman who was a drug abuser and for obvious reasons decided to remove himself and his children from the situation. He knew from the beginning that the relationship wasn't good anyways, they fought constantly and he was never really happy but, like so many, thought kids would help solve the problem. Instead, the obvious happened and Ken found himself a single dad raising a son and a daughter.
Ken quickly found another love and remarried fairly soon after the divorce. His kids were still young, often a time when many single parents think it's best to begin a blended family because "the kids are young and it's just like a new family anyways". What we find by reading this book is that this is often not the case. Jasmyn, his oldest daughter, often expresses how hard it was for her as the child to belong to 2 mothers. She also expresses that she often felt like she was not her step-mother's but she was her father's, often creating turmoil within herself with these thoughts. Whether her parent's felt this way or not was of no bearing, what mattered is how her own mind adjusted to living in what we today call a "mixed family". It wasn't obvious until somewhat later, after her baby years that this mindset took place and the problems began.
The book follows the life of a young girl who never seems to find happiness and parents (step-parents) who can't seem to do enough to "help" but perhaps help too much. Again, the hindsight is that they should have allowed her to make choices, come to them for help before they simply bailed her out. Loosing life's lessons, this young seemingly perfect girl made all the wrong turns and became every parent's nightmare. The book shows each turning point and stage of Jasmyn's life and how both she and her father viewed it; often two completely different outtakes. We watch her twist and turn, taking wrong road after wrong road and as parent's look and say " well, I probably would have done the same thing" and THAT is where the purpose of the book comes in.
To sum it up, the book is a true account of a young girl growing up with wrong decisions. Growing up in what we would consider a perfect, loving family but we find what seems good on the outside, isn't always good inside. We get to look back on this family's life and have hindsight to raising a young, troubled teen. We get to see that even the most perfect of children can make the wrong choices and we, as parents, can sometimes help in making those choices even when we don't know it. It's a book of truth and honesty without the fear of looking bad. Most amazingly it is a way for both parents and teens to see a true view of growing up and learn from the mistakes of someone else. I think the authors accomplished what they meant to do, give us an understanding of child rearing from a realistic perspective and their ability to admit their own mistakes helps us to see ours before they occur. I would recommend it to anyone even thinking of having children, not to scare them away from this glorious decision but to give them a head start of child rearing with hindsight before they even begin. Teens could benefit from this book simply because they would not only relate to the girls feelings during these times but can see what her decisions did to her life. It's a wonderful life's lesson, summed up in a couple hundred pages; something most of us wish we could do ahead of time and now we finally have the chance to learn from it in another perspective.
I was so moved and so touched by this book.......2006-02-19
I'm writing this review with big dark circles under my eyes.
I couldn't put Ken and Jasmyn's book down. I just received it a couple of days ago and now I am finished. I admire and applaud them both for writing such a needed and timely book. I REALLY hope they are finding their way to Oprah and all those important channels to get this book out there. I don't know where to begin. I don't want to make this a long review but I just want to say I was so moved and so touched by this book, it complemented and verified so much of what I am thinking about. I hope parents really look at themselves and teach kids to cut their parents off at the pass when something unhealthy is going to happen.
The fact that Ken and Lynne looked at themselves in retrospect and were there solidly for their daughter, even when there were so mad (she knew you were there and hated that she caused you to appear to others to "not be there") I fell in love with all of them while reading this book.
My husband is a stepfather and doing a great job of helping me raise my two boys (ages 10 and 15). However, it wasn't always a picnic. He had all his ideas on how boys should be raised, with them having a pretty dysfunctional father of their own. He just KNEW (not unlike Lynne) what they needed to shape up. We fought a lot, I was somewhat depressed when he would be too harsh. Because, like Lynne, he was very objective and could see what was really going on and what really needed fixing.
Parents should know how they REALLY affect their children even when they think their parenting and actions are doing something else.
Of all the parenting books I have read, this is so much in line and very much more palatable, because this topic of parents looking deeply at themselves as the source for their children's problems is very, very sensitive.
It speaks so well to what it is like to be parented by us and by step parents.
I want to say how much I admire Ken & Jasmyn, I am just so moved by everything they have been through.

Gottfried Wagner is a man clearly wrestling with the past. He grew up in a loveless atmosphere in Bayreuth--a mecca for German devotees of composer Richard Wagner, his great-grandfather. But it wasn't until he was an adult that he learned of the far darker overtones of the family home--their close links with Hitler and a pattern of anti-Semitic beliefs that he traces back to the famous composer. Gottfried, who was born in 1947, has spent years publicly castigating the anti-Semitism of the Wagners and what he calls the "Wagner cult," and this book is his summation of that campaign. Much of his story is not new, but he provides some indelible new details. The struggle between his father, Wolfgang, and uncle, Wieland, for control of the Bayreuth Festival was so hostile that Gottfried was once beaten for playing with his cousins. And as late as the 1970s, his grandmother Winifred carefully stored a cache of Hitler's letters in a steel-lined cabinet and kept a photo of him on her desk, inscribed "From Wolf to his Winnie." During one of Hitler's many visits to her home, he told the Wagner boys, "Once we have rid the world of the Bolshevik-Jewish conspirators, then you, Wieland, will run the theater of the West and you, Wolfgang, the theater of the East."
At its heart, this is neither a historical study nor a family exposé. It is the sad story of a son who spent decades rebelling against an icy father and trying to make peace with him. He also searched for his own career in the shadow of his famous family. Gottfried maintains that his outspokenness ruined his chances in the German opera world, where Bayreuth casts a heavy influence (Wolfgang Wagner still runs the festival). Bayreuth has in fact changed in recent years, welcoming Jewish conductors like James Levine and Daniel Barenboim. But Gottfried sees this as a cynical move, necessary in--as he quotes Winifred--"these Jew-ridden times." Gottfried finally severed his ties to his domineering father in 1990 when he conducted a lecture tour in Israel. He now calls himself an "anti-Wagnerian," and he has formed a group to foster German-Jewish understanding. --David Olivenbaum
Book Description
Richard Wagner's great-grandson Gottfried Wagner, born after the end of World War II, was taught to worship his great-grandfather as a cultural ancestor of all of Germany. Richard Wagner inspired a generation of philosophers, cultural critics, and politicians. Perhaps no one took Richard Wagner's polemics more to heart than Adolf Hitler, for whom the musician was a foundational influence.
In Gottfried Wagner's memoir, Twilight of the Wagners: The Unveiling of a Family's Legacy, Hitler is an inescapable presence, as he was in Gottfried's family--one of the many specters haunting the Wagner estate, though young Gottfried wondered if he was the only one who could see them. One afternoon he discovered old photographs and oil paintings of Hitler among the family memorabilia. Warned never to mention the pictures to anyone, he became an unwilling coconspirator in his family's secret.
Gottfried Wagner reclaimed his voice during adolescence and began an impassioned crusade in adulthood to examine the hatred and racism he knew growing up in Bayreuth. Although disinherited and ostracized by his father, Gottfried has become an outspoken critic of Richard Wagner's legacy and a champion of greater understanding between Germans and Holocaust survivors worldwide. With a judicious eye for detail, a sweeping sense of conscience, and the determination to redeem himself and his past, Gottfried Wagner lays bare the sins of this powerful family.
Customer Reviews:
Makes You Feel Sympathy for His Father.......2006-02-20
I've never seen a book backfire the way that this one does. Gottfried Wagner wants the reader to sympathize with his position, to feel the suffering of his terrible childhood, and to blame Gottfried's father Wolfgang for all of these woes. What actually happens is that Gottfried comes off as a whiner who blames everyone else (loudly and viciously) for his failures and who wrenches his arm patting himself on the back for his few, really rather undistinguished successes. The first fifth of the book is a fairly interesting "behind the scenes" look at Bayreuth in the 1950s. The rest of the book is an embarrassing rant. I was surprised to find this book offered by various vendors on Amazon for literally $.02. I now realize that you truly do get what you pay for. My respect for the challenges that Wolfgang Wagner has overcome increased tremendously as I read this book.
Scion of the Wagner Family of Bayreuth is no Siegrfried to the Bayreuth Bunch!.......2005-10-06
Dr. Gottfried Wagner (born in 1947) is the great-grandson of German's greatest opera composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). The famed composer is known as a titan among the operatic deities as
he lived, worked, womanized and whined his way across Europe. Wanger wrote such works as "The Ring Cycle"; "The Flying Dutchman" "Parisfal" "Lohengrin"; "Tannheuser" and "The Meistersingers von Nurumberg."
The composer was also noted for his adultery; his ingratitude to friends and supporters; his hedonism and crack-pot anti-semitic philosophy.
Gottfried's book sketchily fills in the portraits of the Wanger family. We see how the family worshipped Hitler, supported him with money, publicity and unwavering loyalty during the dark days of the Third Reich.
Gottfired grew up in a cold, anti-semetic hermetically sealed world of loyalty to the deity Richard Wagner. His father was an especially cold man who (according to Gottfried) treated the young Wagner as a pariah
Despite a PH.D and vast experience on the stages of European opera houses, lecture podiums and theatre young Wagner is still not welcomed at the Bayreuth Festipial House. He has an expert's
knowledge of the works of Brech at Weill which are not appreciated in his family!
Young Wagner is wed to an Italian and has several years ago adopted a boy from the brutal land of Romania. He seeks to be engaged in dialogue with Jews and all who have suffered oppression. His guilt at being a German child of Nazi sympathizers and active supporters is manifest throughout these tortured and self-revealing pages.
The book should have been better edited for conciseness! Gottfried does tend to whine, complain and seek to force his imperious will on others ! (could this be a Wagner trait?). I would also like to learn how other members of the family feel about it and what justifications could they render for their actions.
The book is a tedious, relatively boring book. It offers little for the music lover interested in learning more about Richard Wagner and the nineteenth century world in which he lived and composed.
While I applaud the author's disdain of anti-semitism I wish I had saved my money is this draggy read! So-So!
Dr. Wagner's great work.......2004-04-16
Dr Wagner's work examines the pulse of lovers of Richard Wagner that still runs deeply thru the veins of Germany. His autobiography, which further examines the shaping events in his life, is also quite remarkable. This is a great book for all who are interested in musicology, Germany, or a good read.
Twilight Zone.......2003-11-03
Gotfried Wagner gives us the inside story on the Wagner dynasty. He is certainly an nonconformist Wagner: a supporter of social - democracy and a promoter of German - Jewish understanding who wrote his doctorate on the Jewish composer Kurt Weil. Dr. Wagner tells us what it was like growing up in the strange world of Bayreuth and about the infighting between the heirs to the dynasty. He leaves no doubts as to the historical anti-semitism of the Wagner legacy as well as the war time collabaration with the Nazis (Hitler was endearingly called "Uncle Wolf"). That anti - semitism lives on today. He considers Daniel Birenboim as somewhat of a careerist and a dupe who purposely chooses to ignore the anti - semitism of Bayreuth. Dr. Wagner completely broke with the Wagner heritage and for this he has my admiration. An interesting story but the book cold have been better edited and reduced by say, fifty pages.

Book Description
Tom Gallagher is in a tight spot. The fate of the Dillontown team rests on the outcome of one baseball game, winner take all. If Tom's team loses, they lose their field too. But how can they possibly win? Just when everything seems hopeless, a mysterious boy named Cruz de la Cruz rides into town and claims to know the secret of hitting. Not to mention the secrets of Dante Del Gato, Dillontown's greatest hitter ever. Since he walked away from the game years ago, Del Gato hasn't spoken a word to anyone. But now he might be Tom's only hope for saving his hometown. From the award-winning author of Over the Wall and Choosing Up Sides comes this imaginative tale of one boy's struggle to preserve the spirit of the game he loves.

The Boy Who Saved Baseball.......2007-04-23
The book I read was The Boy Who Saved Baseball. This book is about a town called Dillontown and its historical baseball field. The field is in danger of being destroyed by Orange County but it could be saved by just winning a baseball game against the camp down the hill. The fate of Dillontown lies in the hands of Tom Gallagher and the rest of the baseball team.
My favorite part of the book was when Cruz De La Cruz and Tom Gallagher sneak out to go to Dante Del Gato's house to ask him to coach and hopefully tell them the secret of hitting. They ride there horses up to his house and find that there is a large wall surrounding his house. Cruz thinks and comes up with an idea, he gets a rope and finds a metal thing on the ground, he ties the metal thing to the end of the rope and lasso's it around a tree behind the wall. Cruz climbs the wall using the rope but the wall couldn't handle the weight so it collapsed and left a giant gap in the wall. Then Del Gato came with a shotgun, Cruz quickly apoligized and explained what happened and why they came. They asked Del Gato if he could coach there team and he said no, they also asked the secret of hitting but he told them there was none.
This deffinatley wasn't the best book I have read becuase there is a lot of boring parts. Although once you get to the end of the book it is worth it. The title may make this book seem like more of a boys book because of the word "Baseball" but however it is not all about baseball htere is more to it that you would have to find out by readiing this book. This is a good book for any age or gender considering that it is quite an easy read. Overall, I do recommend the book The Boy Who Saved Baseball to anyone.
The book for people who eat, drink, and sleep baseball.......2007-03-06
This book is about a kid named Tom who got his summer camp baseball team in a lot of trouble. It starts off with his town about to be demolished. Tom doesn't want his town called Dillontown to be torn down to bites. At a town meeting the owner of the Lucky Strike Field, Doc, tells the town that there will be a baseball game deciding the fate of their town.
The team had one week to get ready to beat the other team. After one day a kid came to the camp from the mountains, and his name was Cruz. The team practice for many hours and many days. Cruz and tom went to a guy house to get him to coach their baseball team. Later that day the guy came and taught them all the basics. Cruz made a video game that helps the team with their batting skills. Finally it was game day.
I think that the book was okay, but it wasn't great. One reason why the book was good was that the book gave the reader a good lesson. It said that you can do anything if you put everything into it. It also showed how a baseball team fights for their beloved town. Everyone should have a chance to be someone special and be the winner at something important.
Another thing about the book was that the author should have had an illustration of how the field looked like before the team cleans it up. All the book had was a map of the town. The entire book said about the field was that it had rusty bleachers, a stone wall, and a white cross that represented the miners who died in a cave-in. He could have said something about the how long the field was or was it a nice field or a horrible field. The book needed a little more detail of some characters and the field.
I didn't really like the ending of this book. I thought that the writer would tell us what happened to Cruz. All it said was that Cruz left his game so Tom could use and sell it for big bucks. The only good thing about the ending was that Since, Doc died he gave everything to Tom and Tom left everything the same. He got about 1.5 million dollars from the land and the video game.
I would recommend this book to people who really like baseball. It would also be good book for people who need encouragement with different situations. This book has no bad language and no bad things in it. The book was a little confusing during the end, but it was still a good book to read. Thank you for reading this review.
A Great Book.......2007-03-01
The Boy Who Saved Baseball is a very good book. [...]
What I liked about this book was the story. This book had a good story to it. This book shows if you you don't give up you can win. Thats what I liked about this book.
People that don't like this kind of story would not like this book. If certain people don't like baseball they will not like this book. Thats why this book is called The Boy Who Saved Baseball.
My overall opinion is that this book is a great book. It has a good story. I would give this book four out of five stars. This was a great book.

Book Description
In 1798, Cleveland, Ohio, was in danger of being wiped out by a malaria epidemic. Based on fact, this book tells the remarkable story of Seth Doan, a young boy whose heroic efforts kept his family and neighbors alive and ultimately put the city of Cleveland on the map. Jim Giblins first full-length work of historical fiction, this chapter book is perfect for kids of that in-between agetoo old for picture books and too young for full-length novels.

J Johnson's Review.......2006-09-12
The Boy Who Saved Cleveland is the wonderful coming of age story of Seth Doan. Although this is a work of fiction, Giblin has based the book on actual events. In the summer of 1798, the small settlement of Cleveland experiences a malaria outbreak. Many of the founders fall ill to the "shakes and fever" and it is left up to Seth Doan to supply food for the entire settlement. Seth has been protected from hardwork by his father, who fears something may happen to his only surviving son. Although, understandably terrified by the task ahead, Seth sets out to try and save his family and the rest of the settlement his father has worked hard to help establish. This book is great for children in grades 3-5. The sentences flow smoothly and has a vocabulary that will challenge young readers. In addition, the historical setting is sure to captivate young history lovers.
New target audience; New Style.......2006-08-01
James Cross Giblin is known for writing extraordinary nonfiction books for young adults. His books have a reputation for being accurate, readable, and above all enjoyable.
THE BOY WHO SAVED CLEVELAND is a departure in some ways from your typical Giblin book. It is a fiction book for young readers--I'd estimate second to fourth graders. Definitely a "chapter-book" look and style to it, clear, easy-to-read, straight forward text, short chapters. Also, the book is fiction not nonfiction.
THE BOY WHO SAVED CLEVELAND is based on a true story of a young boy who saved his small settlement in 1798 from from a malaria epidemic. As one by one his family members and neighbors get sick it is his responsibility to take the corn to the mill to grind. Each day his burdens become heavier as more neighbors add in sacks of corn to be taken to the mill. This young boy has a great responsibility, and a newfound purpose. He is proud of his accomplishments...and is taking his first steps to manhood.
Overall, while not as 'fascinating' to adult readers like his YA books are...it's hard to have a 'fascinating' chapter book...it is an enjoyable read that I hope many children will enjoy.
The illustrations by Michael Dooling are also impressive.
