Not the best.......2004-01-26

I have not yet travelled to Phoenix, which is, of course, the whole purpose behind my purchase of this travel guide.

Something tells me, though, that all of the sights and attractions of Phoenix and Scottsdale cannot be summarized in 25 or so small pages (this travel guide is as wide as a wallet and only twice as tall, hence the "small pages" bit). I am not impressed with this travel guide. Frommer's, as many people have come to know, usually published travel guides with complete, well-researched information, and rarely do you need another travel guide if you've purchased a Frommer's first.

Not so with this one, unless all you do in Phoenix is eat and sleep-- literally. I say this because well over half of the book (est. 65%) is devoted to restaurants and hotels (and it's not a very long book (150pps not including the index). If this book was retitled "Frommer's Guide to the Best of Phoenix/Scottsdale Restaurants and Hotels," this book would have won my five star rating.

Now, in all fairness, the reviews for the restaurants and lodgings have been very influential factors in my decisions on where I will be staying and where I would like to eat. Again, the restaurants and accomodations chunk of the book is quite informative.

But too much of the book is devoted to where to eat, where to stay, and then "where to eat and stay outside Phoenix/Scottsdale." And there is a disproportionately large section of the book given to advice to international travellers, which for any USofA citizen is a waste of paper.

As I mentioned before, there is not much space devoted to sights and attractions. Only highlights are mentioned. And with some of the highlights, I am not entirely sure the authors of this book have spent the required time at these attractions that would allow them to write informative reviews. I, for one, am not impressed with most of the descriptions of the "things to see and do." They seem threadbare, as if the authors walked in and out of these places in ten minutes, just enough time to get to know the official name of the place, and perhaps see the only the highlights of the place. Very poor field research, in my opinion; they give only the highlights of the highlights. I didn't find the "to-see" section very useful.

The one use I DID get out of the attractions part of the book was the webpage addresses (URLs) for those sights that had them. This at least allowed me to use the Internet to research these places for myself. Frommer's always includes URLs for any place that has one, from restaurants to museums to attractions. This part of the book was useful.

All of this said, I surfed Amazon until I found two other books for the Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe area: the Insider's Guide to Phoenix and Best Places Phoenix. They are larger and more useful than this mostly-worthless Frommer's Portable Phoenix & Scottsdale. I certainly would not recommend this book unless all you do is eat and sleep in Phoenix/Scottsdale, and only then this book covers the higher-end places, places that someone on my income cannot afford very often.

This book has "All-American" written all over it; too bad it was made in China. It's big, heavy, and loaded with pretty, colored pictures for those too lazy to read. The print is kinda small - I thought they were using invisible ink, at first; but it's loaded with info.

I would suggest taking away the kids Nintendo and making them read this book cover to cover.

Over the years I have found Schroeder's to be easy to use and pretty realistic when it comes to market values. This year's addition of color photos albeit small ones is a big improvement!

I wasn't sure this was the price guide I was looking for -- but after it arrived, I couldn't have made a better choice. Everything was listed so clearly and I know in the future when I need to locate an antique item, it will be a cinch to locate it. Everything is categorized so clearly, I don't have to spend a lot of time going back and forth trying to find my particular item.

I find a lot of antiques at garage sales and estate sales, this book is very useful to identify items that I find. I have used Schroders for years and love them.

If you are going to buy only one price guide on antiques, buy this one...and buy a new one every year. I use this constantly ~ it is well written, well documented and has numerous references. It covers a daunting array of items thoroughly and interestingly. The background information at the beginning of each heading is worth the price of admission alone.

Difficult to Find Your Item.......2005-12-03

While the book is huge and covers a vast number of items, I have yet to find an item in it that I need to identify/value. It's a good resource for a general feel of how to price items/what items should cost. I tend to rely on more specialized/collector's books instead of this one. In fact, I don't believe that I have opened this book in a year.

Good book but a lot left out, Mostly rare or hard to find items are covered and from not all makers. Still a good book for the more advanced collector.

We have used Schroeder's Antique Price guide for many years. We always look forward to the newest issue as we use it on a very frequent basis. It is written in concise and clear terms, well documented with many reference sites also listed in clear, easy directories. BARNS OF ARKANSAS

Naran Patel has published his book about the " BARNS OF ARKANSAS" A PHOTO JOURNAL.

The barn pictures( with some explanation) shown in this book are but a small part of thousands of photographs Patel took over the last four years while traveling over the back roads and byways of rural Arkansas. Book has filled 176 pages with samples of rural life in the state.

Looking at his book's pictures you can almost smell the odor of fresh mown hay in the loft. If you listen carefully, you may hear the music and foot stomping of a BARN dance where everyone gathered to socialize and forget if just for a moment, the hard work that kept a small farm going. Or, you just might hear the clanking of the milk pails on a frosty winter morning as cows were herded into their milking stalls. The farm family's very survival depended on the contents of these old BARNS.

Patel's passion for these PHOTOGRAPHERS began when he was born and raised in an agricultural community in INDIA where he grew up working in his father's fields of cotton,rice,wheat and other crops. At early age, he moved to America to study in US universities, growing up in Los Angeles, California.

After locating to Arkansas in 2000, on Design/build/start-up project in Pine Bluff Arsenal, Naran's thrust for the outdoors emerged with more enthusiasm because so many interesting subjects in Our Natural State to capture in pictures. The strong roots and memories of the rural culture that he so loved was nurtured once more and it shows up in the pictures in this book.

Patel's beautiful photography takes you through the back roads and out of the way places to show you a cross sections of BARNS from modern to Pre-statehood.

Not great, but good.......2005-07-21

As other reviewers have noted, the photographer was obviously not a professional, but in this case, that's ok. In my opinion, it is better to have scores of imperfect pictures of many barns than to have scores of perfect pictures of just a few. Barns represent an architectural history of regions and ways of life that are rapidly changing. Few farmers today will choose to build beautiful, gigantic wooden barns when prefab steel buildings are cheaper, faster, and easier to maintain.

It does appear that many of the photos were not originally taken with the intention of featuring the barns, but they nevertheless warranted inclusion in the book simply because of the presence of the barns in the frame. And while it is true that powerlines could have been removed to improve the quality of the image, to me they serve as a reminder of the encroachment of modernity into the simpler ways of life that barns represent.

My only serious complaint about the content in general is that there is no record provided of where the barns are located. Some I recognized, and could therefore place, but others were unknown and offered no clues.

More experienced photographers could certainly produce better work, and if they are interested in documenting barns and other interesting structures before they vanish, then by all means I encourage them to do so. In the meantime, though, we should all appreciate and praise the efforts of amateurs.

Worst Picture Book Ever.......2005-05-06

I don't enjoy doing bad reviews, really, but this is the WORST picture book I have ever seen!

Many of the pictures are blurred, some HORRIBLY so! I would list page numbers but there are none. Mr. Patel has no understanding of depth-of-field. In one shot the foreground grass is in focus but the barn, i.e. SUBJECT of the picture, is completely out of focus! Quite a few barn pictures have power lines running through the image that could have been composed out of the frame by an observant photographer or, at the very least, edited out in post. The vast majority of images are set against the ugliest white skies I've ever seen published in such a book. I won't even mention the typography!

It is the perfect example of how bad an ego trip can get. This is a self-published book. The author is an engineer who photographed barns during weekends of his three-year stay in Arkansas while working on a chemical weapons arsenal that is being destroyed. I'm glad he got around and saw more of the state than our chemical weapons stockpile, but as a life-long resident of the state, I find this book insulting. The only positive thing I can mention is that I'm glad I only borrowed the book from the library and didn't pay money for it.

Confused & Confusing.......2005-12-08

A unhealty stew of a book. While there are a few interesting insights, it is poorly integrated with little or no logical development. It reads like a poorly edited Master's thesis. Too much gossip, second and third-hand reports, and gross speculation. Gerwhwin's impact on both popular and "serious" music is severely understated. Probably the best part of the book is the picture section.

I have mixed feelings........2005-07-01

Though I enjoyed this book tremendously, it was a guilty pleasure. Gershwin's musical life has been thoroughly documented in other books, and comparatively Joan Peyser doesn't fall too short in keeping us sufficiently well-informed of Gershwin's musical development in this book. However, her strong suit is Gershwin's personal life, and she raises some interesting theories in that area, some which seem very well-researched and others which seem to be little more than hearsay, though I give her credit for doggedly digging up such obscure hearsay. However, nothing revealed by this hearsay seems out of character for Gershwin based on what we know from earlier more scholarly biographies, so it comes across as quite believable, and answers some of the juicier questions many of us have had about Gershwin's private life. In that sense, its a real page turner.

The principles of scholarly nonfictional writing dictate that an author doesn't print information that didn't come from one or several reliable sources. Peyser has flouted that principle throughout this book. She frequently presents tantalizing bits of insider information that she obtained from a lone source, or worse yet from a person quoting another person, and in at least one memorable instance, a person quoting another person quoting another person (whew)! Having said that, essentially there are only two new theories that she pushes in this book. One, is that Gershwin had a subconscious masochistic streak in him that caused him to gravitate towards people of a cruel, insensitive, selfish, even sadistic nature (mainly because his mother was such a person), and the other, that it is a FACT, not rumor that Gershwin fathered an illegitimate son. The theory about Gershwin's masochistic streak is interesting, but it really matters not whether the reader buys it or not; it's merely an interesting thing to point out. But the theory about Gershwin's illegitimate son carries more weight, and deserves a closer look.

Other biographies, notably Charles Schwartz' 1973 biography have mentioned the alleged son and his claim to be Gershwin's progeny, immediately making the disclaimer that there is no evidence to prove or disprove his claim. Peyser, on the hand, dives head first into this controversy, throws out every bit of information on the matter that she can dig up, from solid proof to secondhand hearsay and let's the reader decide whether or not it is true. Is this responsible journalism? Probably not. Does it mean that the story is nothing more than an outlandish fabrication? No, it does not. From what we do know as fact about Gershwin, the story is quite plausible. We do know from numerous reliable sources that Gershwin was a sexual tyrannosaurus, going through scores of women in his short life. We also know that in the 1920s and 30s the use of contraception in casual sexual encounters, when it was used at all, was pretty much limited to the condom, which most men detested, and few carried around with them. We also know from old medical records, that a dancer who appeared in George White's Scandals of 1927, one of Gershwin's musicals, gave birth to an illegitimate son in 1928 who bore a striking physical resemblance to George Gershwin, even growing up to be afflicted with the same premature male pattern baldness as George Gershwin. All coincidence? Possibly. But based only these facts alone, it is not hard to believe that Gershwin fathered at illegitimate child. It would be harder to believe that he did not. The odds were certainly against him. When one factors in Joan Peyser's hearsay from friends and employees of Gershwin, it seems almost a certainty.

I do believe there are certain exceptions to the principles of scholarly journalism, however questionable and unsavory they may be. One exception is when clear factual information simply does not exist to prove a theory, and the best proof an author can come up with is sketchy and vague, e.g., Tchaikovsky's homosexuality. There is no solid proof to back up this claim OTHER than hearsay, and yet it is mentioned in all modern biographies of Tchaikovsky, and generally accepted as fact by the public. Another exception is when factual information exists but is withheld by its source, forcing the author to dig around the source for any scrap of information to corroborate what is likely true (why else would the source withhold evidence)? Such is the case with Gershwin's alleged son. In all likelihood, there is more than enough evidence to prove or disprove his legitimacy (or illegitimacy, as the case may be). If that evidence could prove his claim to be false, the Gershwin family would have come out with it years ago. So it is reasonable to deduce that the information they will not share with biographers proves the alleged son's claims to be true. It is understandable that family members as wealthy and influential as the Gershwins would seek to guard the image of so great an historical figure as George Gershwin, but it is also understandable that Peyser, sensing that she is onto something, would quote other sources less credible than the Gershwin family to make a case for an important matter in the life of her subject.

I sense that this author has a good nose for sniffing out the truth behind a story (though I can't prove it) even if what she finds cannot prove her to be right. Intuitive journalism, you might call it. I admit that this biography lacks the stamp of responsible journalism, and carries with it a whiff of lasciviousness, yet on the other hand, I believe she is barking up the right tree in most cases, even if she can't prove to our satisfaction that there's really anything up the tree.

If you're really interested in Gershwin's life, from soup to nuts, then you have to read this book, even if you disagree with every word of it.

Certainly Not Trash.......2005-05-25

This is much more than trash. I found it an unholy but compelling stew. This biography seeks to unmask Gershwin legends while touching on Gershwin's family, 20th century music trends, Broadway, popular song, and the zeitgeist. Granted, it does not tie these things together with any sort of elegance.

Peyser is not afraid to shoot from the hip. Sometimes she overextends and misses...sometimes she is truly persuasive about the players' psychology and motivations.

It's a weird read, combining the recollections of a 101 year old Gershwin family member with observations on Stravinsky's development as a composer. But I'm glad I read it. And I respect this author for doing what she could to record the recollections of people decades after the events. That, in itself, is no mean scholarly contribution!

Finally, I feel obliged to note that this author seems very indebted to Jablonski's *Gershwi*.

Garbage In - Garbage Out.......1999-11-16

This book proves the old computing adage! It's too bad the author doesn't have any solid research to back up the wild claims she makes about Gershwin's life. Too bad there isn't less than one star on amazon.com ratings, this book deserves far less.

Reads like a bad supermarket tabloid........1999-01-18

This book seems like an overt attempt at character assassination. If the author wants us to believe most of the "new material" that is presented in this book it's going to take more documentation than third or fourth hand rumor and gossip.

Surely there is a lot more complexity and depth to George Gershwin's character than we have had in previous biographies, but this trashy book doesn't convey that. For example, we are now to believe that Gershwin was a sadist because the author heard that from someone, who heard it from someone, who had it second hand from someone who heard it from George's psychologist? Puh-leeeze!

In my opinion, the author presents a lot of negative points about Gershwin without citing credible sources to back up the claims. I felt I was reading a diatribe from someone with a personal axe to grind, rather than a scholarly or well researched biography.

Let's hope a new generation of biographers don't cite this work as their source material for future biographies of Gershwin. It's trash.

There are other more informative biographies of Gershwin out there...go for something else.

Fascinating Gershwin.......2007-08-02

Joan Peyser presents a revealing new account of the intriguing life of American composer George Gershwin. Startling, and always well-documented, Peyser describes the life of this American musical icon of the 1930's, whose compositions include "Rhapsody In Blue", "An American In Paris" and the unforgettable "Porgy and Bess". A great read - fascinating and very worthwhile.

A God for Lions is the strongest case for reincarnation yet. For unlike the others, this author has the proof. Gregoire confirms in a simple and understanding way that Einstein's findings concerning physical energy also apply to mental energy - that it is scientifically possible - actually probable - that upon death the mind does find another host. This book would probably better be entitled "The Reincarnation of John Paul I" as it is based on his doctoral thesis "The Origin of the Human Soul" in which he defines the human mind - versus the human spirit - versus the human soul - and determines the possible survivlal of each of these into the afterlife. As Dante once took the reader through the various levels of Hell, the author brings the reincarnated John Paul back to life in the voice of a ten year old boy and takes the reader into the very different heavens of the Christian, the Jew, the Muslim, the Himdu, the Buddhist, the Tao and others. The book is aimed at removing the big question mark (?) at the end of ones life - what happens after one dies? The author is more than successful in doing this as the reincarnated John Paul stumbles upon an ancient religion that guarantees one an afterlife and removes the question at the end of ones life. That is one can know for certain in this life that one will live forever. If every teenager would read this book we would live in a much better world.
