Informative text, dazzling photographs.......2004-06-17

"Jewelry by Joan Rivers" features photography by Gordon Munro and Elizabeth Watt. The book is a celebration of jewelry from the perspective of comedian and television personality Joan Rivers. The main sections of the book are as follows: a lengthy introduction; a series of entries on great jewelry designers (Tiffany and Co., Faberge, Cartier, etc.); a chapter with advice on integrating jewelry into one's overall fashion sense; a large section on Joan Rivers' own costume jewelry line, the Classics Collection; and a chapter describing how jewelry is made. Also included are shopping tips, a bibliography and index.

The book combines an interesting text with a wealth of clear, full-color photos that are sparkling with detail. Rivers enlivens the text with enjoyable personal anecdotes. The section on jewelry and fashion includes shots of Joan modeling different clothes-and-jewelry combos, and has an empowering message that encourages readers to create their own style without being stifled by someone else's rules.

There are some wonderful photos of and stories about some of the fine jewelry pieces in Joan's own collection; one of the most dazzling pieces is a necklace, once owned by Queen Marie of Romania, that contains many colorful eggs and charms. The section about how jewelry is made shows, in text and photos, the process from rough design sketch all the way to finished product. It's absolutely fascinating.

The book's largest section is devoted to photos and descriptive text about Joan's own costume jewelry line. The Classics Collection pieces profiled include necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches, etc. It's a rich and colorful variety of pieces. Many motifs and elements appear, and there are synthetic/faux gems of many different shapes, sizes, and colors. Some pieces are whimsical, some bold and dramatic. If you love photos of jewelry, you'll be in heaven.

I've read many different photo books on both fine and costume jewelry, and this book really stands out in terms of beauty and educational value. And Joan River' passion for jewelry really animates the book overall.

A passion for jewelry design.......2003-04-09

Joan Rivers is one of America's most successful comedians (a tough field for a woman, as being funny and being ladylike would seem to be mutually exclusive.) Ms. Rivers has always been a fan of high fashion. Her late husband Edgar indulged her love of designer jewelry such as Faberge's, but not content to merely own such works of art, Rivers started her own costume jewelry line inspired by Russian pieces, Edwardian, Victorian and modern classics.

The book contains a section on the major designers like Faberge and Cartier, a section on the reproductions in the Rivers line compared to their original versions, and one about the process by which costume jewelry is made, from artist's model to casting pot metal, electroplating and setting rhinestones. The book is well-photographed and should be of interest to anyone who collects costume jewelry, whether from Rivers' own line or vintage pieces of other makes.

Joan's book has lots of beautiful photos of her classics collection jewelry from the first 5 years. Her book explains how she got started with QVC & why she decided to create the jewelry, how the jewelry is made, where she got her inspiration for her classics collection jewelry, personal stories & information about her favorite jewelry designers & stores. It's a fun book that is a very easy read with lots of beautiful photos. If you collect Joan's jewelry like I do you'll love seeing all the different pieces of jewelry she did in the early years. It's great to see jewelry pieces I have & other items from that year's collection. This book was well worth the price!

I found the book full of new stitches as well as adding color. Watercolor is amazing on fabric, with new watercolor crayons and just a light touch. The imformation on the needle stitching is wonderful and a new way of design.
Each page and stitch, had a picture to help the beginner as well as the the advanced needle worker.
One thing, good for a library addition, but not enough pages for the beginner.

Defensive Pessimism is Positive.......2007-07-31

A must read if for no other reason than Julie Norem has brought to light a highly functional problem solving style. It is called defensive pessimism and differs substantially from pessimism which is not effective. The author clearly shows how identifying worst case scenarios and preparing for them as a way of handling anxiety is useful. And she points out how it would be harmful to make a defensive pessimist a strategic optimist. Defensive pessimism is as well a strategy taught by cognitive-behavioral therapists as Julie Norem points out. The author makes defensive pessimism accessible and acceptable. If you're a pessimist you can become a defensive pessimist. You can applaud your coping strategy. While the book is repetitive, the repetitions help to drive the essential points home. Valuable for the clinician as well as the lay person.

the positive power of negative thinking.......2007-01-12

I found it fantastic. I learnt so much about myself and it helped me understand how other relationships were different and why. I didnt even relise so much of what I did. It is a great book.

Typically Female Style.......2004-05-07

Most Females (or other minority groups) appear to practice the management philosophy of Dr. Norem's positive negativism, perhaps because typically being followers rather than recognized leaders, they've often had to entertain the high probability of failure, due to bias, discrimination or simply histories of it. The idea that optimists occur across the gender gap, the racial gap, or the disability or ethnic minority gap is preposterous. Anyone who struggles with the presumptions of success as heavily concentrated in the domain of the majority is not logical to emotionally invest in that traditional attitude because of the failures they are used to having to absorb. Optimism, itself, is very much rooted in the success history of the past, and to those who are class, gender and identity favored. All of the rest practice to varying degrees the process of positive negativism by conditioning if not by training and experience. Why should it be otherwise?

This book lacks focus and direction........2003-12-30

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers about how repetitious this book is. After every page I turned it felt as if the author was just saying the same thing over and over again without ever coming to any kind of conclusion. I was amazed at how someone could babble on for 200-some odd pages without actually saying anything. The whole time I was reading the book I just felt like it wasn't really going anywhere and I felt as if right around the next page I was going to find some conclusion that would tie everything together and make some kind of sense of it all, but there never was such a page. Being quite a pessimist myself, I really wanted to like this book but I really didn't and so I don't recommend this book.

Realistic Psychology for Real People.......2003-11-18

I found that the psychologist who wrote this interesting book provides significant understanding and help for those of us who just are not the naturally upbeat type of "Don't worry, Be happy" optimists. The concept and quiz for the personality style "Defensive Pessimism" support a positive interpretation of individual differences in optimism and pessimism, and emphasize the adaptive value of being a person who thinks through worst-case scenarios and uses anxiety to motivate and carry out effective actions. I like the balanced approach in this book that helps the reader understand both the dangers of unrealistic optimism and the virtues of constructive pessimism. Here one can find realistic psychology for real people that is based on the author's 20 years of original research.

Syd Barrett will be greatly missed. His whimsical songwriting style was unique and greatly influenced many famous musicians like David Bowie. This book is an essential purchase for those wishing to know about a genuis.

At last, it has happened. Ever since Mark Lewisohn published his momumental session-by-session "The Beatles Recording Sessions" in 1988, I have been waiting for other important artists to be given the same thorough, studious treatment. It's been a long wait, for while some vaguely similar titles have been published (including one about Jimi Hendrix), few of them could offer access to the same obsessive documentation that Abbey Road studios required of its engineers. Syd Barrett, the offbeat genius and erratic founder of Pink Floyd, also happens to have done most of his work at Abbey Road, and David Parker has been through every corner of the studio files to come up with this impressive offering. In it, we learn the date and content of every professional recording session Syd Barrett (with and without Pink Floyd) is known to have done during his finite career, from the first 1965 demos through the last, unheard, abandoned sessions in 1974. Some of Syd's engineers, friends and managers (Peter Jenner, etc.) contribute memories and comment perceptively on each of the songs and sessions. (Alas, no comments from members of Pink Floyd.)It should be noted that the author did not actually get to listen to many of the tapes; indeed, sometimes tape was recycled at the studios and the originals no longer exist. Nevertheless, the documentation is here. This is a wonderful, respectful reference work for any Syd Barrett fan, and an amusing read for anyone interested in recording sessions in general. Discographies, a compendium of live shows, and other appendices add to the completist fun. Wow, a winner.
