Fills a Niche.......2006-01-19
The purchaser should be aware that this isn't really a 'how to' book. It's comprised of postings by members of Jim Faraone's Yahoo group of fashion doll makeover artists, and has a format much like a website bulletin board. It is ABSOLUTELY packed with tips and suggestions and techniques - many with really excellent photos. Its contributors are generous with their time and experience. However, I'm afraid the beginner will find this book overwhelming, since it doesn't present a simple step-by-step approach. It should also be pointed out that the techniques have not necessarily all been 'tested and approved' by the author or any collective group of artists, so it would be unwise to consider this text to be the definitive guide for handling vinyl or hard plastics. I find it to be a worthwhile addition to a larger library, but not a 'handy reference guide' - if that's what you're looking for.
Great addition to your fashion doll customizing library!.......2002-10-13
I wouldn't consider this book the 'be all and end all' of it... in other words it's a great supplement to other books available. If it were to be the 'be all and end all' of it, I would expect the title to be "Encyclopedia of Fashion Doll Makeovers" but it's not... it's "Utimate Fashion Doll Makeovers...Tips from the Experts"... those from novice to professional who are doing great work! Jim does say in his intro he wanted the feel of the book to be like that of his Yahoogroup™, Fashion Doll Makeovers, he has achieved that. It makes for feeling right at home with these talented artists and with internet access you can meet them too. There are some very useful tips in here that to me make it a very worth while publication in it's own right. There are 4 other books in his series. I haven't gotten any of them yet.. but it seems that one doesn't replace the others... they are supplemental to one another. And as an artist you have to take bits and pieces of advice and combine it with your own ideas and creativity. Thanks Jim and all the featured artists, your an inspiration to this novice!
More of the same..........2002-08-14
This one has more tips in it than any of the others but it really doesnt TEACH anything! I feel as though I am eavesdropping on artists' conversations with this format and sometimes personal ones at that!(Catty!) Nor do I want to look at pictures! I bought this book because I wanted to learn! Sorry but if another fashion doll makeover book comes out I wont be buying.
Friendly encouraging help.......2002-07-18
This is the best of his books! I love it, I'll be using it as a reference for a long time! there's more tips in it than I can remember in one reading. Its set up like a chat with him and other doll artists, easy to read, easy to understand. I have his 3rd and 4th books, which have tips not included in this book but this one is a MUST HAVE.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-04-03
A MUST HAVE for any customizer!!! Mr. Faraone's Book keep getting better and BETTER!!
Customer Reviews:
Great book for young origami lovers.......2007-09-02
This is a beautiful book. It is better for kids who have already done some folding because the instructions are a bit less straightforward than in other books. If you are starting an origami book collection, this is a must-have.
Amazing Little Book!.......2006-11-05
What first attracted me to this book, despite owning several origami books, was that this one has several patterns which make human forms... animals are so much more common, but my daughter wanted to make some little origami dolls, and humans are hard to find in beginner-level origami books.
Ah, this is SO MUCH MORE than just another beginner-level origami book! It is an alphabet book, and each page has a pattern for a figure whose English name begins with that letter. The figure's name is given in English, French and then Japanese, and at the bottom it is written in Japanese characters, too! Many children are enraptured with curiosity about other languages, codes, characters from other alphabets, and this book fuels that fire with succcint doses, one letter at a time. My daughter got so excited about the translations on each page that she immediately started memorizing those, even before she got around to trying out the origami!
And about the origami... as we have found, there are origami directions, and then there are... well, frustrating paths of deception that never lead you to the intended figure. And every parent knows how badly kids want to be able to do things like this without grownup help, which makes poor directions a real tragedy. Happily, these origami directions are really easy to work with. They are step-by-step, but simple. No labyrinthian trails of confusion to track here! No serpentine arrows leading you to valleys and mountains of terminology with optical-illusion illustrations. I've come across enough frustrating origami instructions to insist on checking an origami book out of the library and trying it out before I will buy one. After I checked this one out, renewed it, returned it, found it checked out to someone else and unavailable, I knew it was time to buy a copy!
26 letters in the alphabet, so that's how many patterns you get. 55 pages. Each odd-numbered page shows a letter with its translations and a lovely illustration which serves as the backdrop for a photo of the actual finished origami figure (it's brilliant and inspiring!). The facing (even-numbered) pages show the very clear folding instructions, none of which exceed one page.
So it isn't a long book, and it isn't cluttered. But it is a masterpiece of form and function, a litttle bit of language, a little bit of art, a little collection of nice origami projects (some quite unique), a most unusual ABC book (if you collect ABC books, you have to add this one to your collection!), and definitely one of those precious little books that you want to own, not just borrow!
Book Description
In 1926 philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein designed and built a house in Vienna for his sister. The only building designed by Wittgenstein, it crystallized his philosophy of architecturenotable for its clarity, precision, and austerityand served as a foil for his written work.?
This detailed investigation of the house is based on 30 years of extensive research. It examines the formal properties of the structure, including Wittgenstein's attention to proportion, detail, and color. It is also the story of one man's relationship to this extraordinary building: in 1971, author Bernhard Leitner was instrumental in saving the Wittgenstein House from destruction and having it declared a national landmark. In the years since, he has continuously refined his ideas about the house and its architect. The beautifully printed photographs in this volume allow a true appreciation of this icon of modern design. Also included are archival images showing the house as it was originally built, before numerous alterations.

Very informative and worth the money.......2007-10-05
This is a great Man's body book with many illustrations. It was popular in the late 1970's. Very informative and worth the money.
Room for improvement.......2000-03-17
After great expectation, I found the book disappointing. Much of it was in the book's preparation. It is poorly illustrated, often making it difficult to understand what is being depicted. It has dozens of typos and grammatical errors. I also found many of the entries uneven in terms of coverage and depth, and in some cases, such as with alternative sexuality, naive. At times the book attempts to be dryly factual and at other times it editorializes. Some of the book has been "translated" into American English and some of it hasn't, sometimes mixing spelling of words on the same page -- very confusing, particularly with medical terms! I did learn a few things from the book.

Customer Reviews:
Ultimate and intimate biography of possibly the most pleasant voice the world has ever known.......2007-06-22
This biography is an excellent nice surprise. There are three kinds of biographies: 1)written by a ghostwriter (who often did not know the person itimately or at all), 2) written by a close friend or relative, or 3)autobiography. After reading this one, and many others like Isadora, Rockefeller, Heisenberg, Newton, Einstein, Von Braun, Rembrandt, I opt for the second option. Biographies like this one, written by a close friend or relative simply give the best of both worlds: intimate information normally inaccessible to others, and still an objective but well informed and not too speculative view.
This book is told by Caruso's second son, who was fortunately bestowed with an excellent memory and decided in the last years of his life, thank God, to put this story together before it would be too late. He was only 17 when his father died in 1921. His son said himself he was more a storyteller than a writer, and as for choosing the writer Andrew Farkas he also did an excellent job. The style is very readable and elegant. It is simply fascinating to read about a life in the Edwardian says, and especially such a famous one.
Many biographies tend to become a bit tedious since in trying to be definitive they often sum up too many facts without paying attention to a general idea of the meaning of the biography itself, that is, why that person, in this case Caruso, is worth a written life story and why the reader should care to read on.
This book shows how it should be done. Not only is it an intimate insight in Edwardian life, also it shows how it is to be the child of such a unique artist. Even more unique is that more than going into voice studies and the like, it is about the life of the great tenor at home, after the concerts (of which he did many). It shows Caruso the man, the character, the child, the tragedies (of loosing his wife to his chauffeur), the father, and last but not least Caruso the Italian.
This is a definite great addition to the vast literature of Caruso. There are enough books and studies written on Caruso the voice, but none will ever surpass this one about Caruso's intimate, or as Proust would put it, 'real' life. Although seen through the eyes of his then young son, who was old when he told it to the world, it gets as close to the facts as we will probably ever be. His son is convincing in his objectivity by just telling what happened. This story is no idealisation of his father. As an example: many biographies were supposed to be hostile to his mother Ada after she left the family. This biography shows why she might have left while at the same time it also makes understandable why his son must indeed have loved his (dramatic) father so much. Caruso was a real Italian, having possibly many relationships, but still acting out when his wife left him for it. Apart from this, many other myths and errors in other biographies are corrected. So why read another biography when you can buy this one?
His son was a Caruso as many Italians, although not bestowed with such greatness as his father. Elegantly enough he even admitted himself that at six years of age he wondered he had to be the son of this great artist.
He can rest assured that he has done his job well by telling the world as neutrally as possible who his father Caruso was, with all his flaws and greatness. Turning the last pages we can only agree with his son's enormous affection for Caruso, who was not only a great actor on stage, but full of melodrama in real life, like a real Italian.
How wonderful it would have been had he only lived in our time, but thanks to the recording technology we can still enjoy many of his songs, and thanks to his son, we also have a glimpse of his intimate life as close as it will ever be.
I recommend this book to any Opera lover, or any person who loves this era or any good biography, as I do not see how this will ever be surpassed, not even by Caruso himself were he still alive - since according to his son, he would never have admitted his mistakes, and his autobiography, if existed, would have been too flattered.
Fantastic.......2001-01-21
The book is gorgeous. Without doubt the best book ever written about Caruso(and there are thousands). And it is exiting to read too... Go and get it! You'll love it! It's just a pitty (and I mean a real pitty) that this is the abridged version - the full one is even better (just in case you love to read ghost stories of how Caruso appeared to his son or you want to know what happened to all the people, Carusos belongings and his body after he died.)
Best book available on the greatest tenor of the century.......1997-08-17
Enrico Caruso is the greatest tenor of this century. I say "is" because every tenor is still compared to Caruso (not to one of "The Three"); his records, all predating the microphone, still sell 76 years after his death; and there are more books about the life and art of Caruso than any other singer. The original version of this book appeared seven years or so ago and was regarded as one of the best Caruso biographies ever written. The book has now been streamlined to remove chapters that were more about the family after Caruso's death than about the great tenor. Not only did Caruso's son have access to family photos, letters, etc denied other biographers but he also has the unique first-hand perspective. Caruso Jr and his co-author, Andrew Farkas, produced a balanced, admirable biography with a smootly flowing narrative. This book belongs on the shelf of every opera lover beside copies of Robinson's collection of Caruso photos and a collection of Caruso's caricatures. Even though I have copies of numerous other biographies of Caruso, this one is the best and the others can be put aside
