Precursora del Feminismo.......2003-12-01
A pleasure to read. Mrs. Alexa Payan paints a vibrant portrait of a truly exceptional feminist. Flora Tristan was one of the most fascinating women of the 19th century. Through her travels we learn and get a better understanding of the women's condition not only in France but also in Peru, Chile and England. At a time when the South Americans were seeking and learning what to do with their independence, her travels in Peru helps us see this country through her own eyes, the way she saw it, different and untamed. It is a fine book to read.
Feminism as Magic Realism.......2003-11-19
Flora Tristân was a most remarkable woman much forgotten in the Anglophone world, so it is therefore a shame that there is as yet at the time of writing no English version. But this timely biography brings her to life. This is no mere biopic - it is a seriously researched academic work with footnotes and bibliography but also a riveting story and one which could be made into a film. Flora was a figure as important in the early promotion of women's rights as Mary Wollstonecraft in England or Lucretia Mott in the USA and indeed of worker's rights along with the Utopian socialists Robert Owen and Saint Simon. But she also was in her own definition a 'pariah' who `peregrinated' around the world of the early 19th century through France, Peru, England. In her case the personal was indeed the political as she fought for her own rights. An activist, as well as an astute commentator of her times, her trajectory is equal to the magic realist tales of Garcia Marquez and this book tells her tale grippingly.

A classic.......2003-04-03
I love this book and reread it every couple of years. It has always been my dream to live in the wilderness for a year, as this honeymooning couple did.
It is well and simply written, with a few maps but only disappointingly blurry pictures. There's lots of great description, including the occasional tedium of holing up for the winter, the joys they had exploring the area once spring arrived, and the terror of dealing with wolves (or was it bears?) trying to break into their cabin.
They are candid about what they did wrong and how they dealt with spending so much uninterrupted time together.

A Must-Read Book for any Financial Professional.......2001-04-21
I was skeptical that another book could be different than any other on this same subject, but was I wrong - this is a "must-read" book for any financial professional, accountant, CPA and appraisal expert who conducts online research and looks for in-depth information. Lang and Tudor have outdone themselves. Bravo to a world-class effort! One piece of information in the first chapter alone more than covered the cost of the book.
Book Description
Halloween is quickly becoming the most popular holiday in America. Next to Christmas, more money is spent on Halloween decorations and novelties than on any other holiday. This wonderful book has been credited with inspiring the Halloween collecting craze, giving its devotees a chance to celebrate the holiday all year round! In addition to color photography and a brand new price guide, there is also a lot of fascinating insight into Halloween. Most people are familiar with the symbols--Ghosts, Jack O'lanterns, Witches, Bats, Skeletons and Black Cats--but few know about Halloween's past. Why does it exist? What is the origin of trick-or-treating? Why does it fall on October 31st? Through these pages you will experience Halloween celebrations of the past, and take a look at Halloween today. For collectors, this is a treasure trove of memorabilia, the largest ever published. It is illustrated in beautiful color and includes newly updated prices for reference.
Customer Reviews:
In the Sumptuous Time of Autumn.......2002-10-11
Stuart L. Schneider's dynamic Halloween In America: A Collector's Guide With Prices spectacularly captures the spirit of the classic years of the American Halloween tradition: the period from the turn of the century through the end of the nineteen-fifties. Though the book includes more recent material, Schneider wisely focuses on what he recognizes to be the holiday's glory days in this country, when its spirit hadn't moved too far from its agricultural roots and American culture was predominantly positive, forward-looking, and uncynical--and its Halloween decorations charming and vividly imaginative.
The book opens with three short, loosely-composed essays, "A Brief History Of Halloween," "The Colors And Images Of Halloween," and "Halloween In America." Schneider, who provides no source material, is often broadly correct but specifically wrong. He suggests, for instance, that the Druids may have built Stonehenge when it has been long established that they did not, and that 'Dryad' is another word for 'Druid.' The author also writes a paragraph about witches and "witch conventions" during the Celtic reign of the British Isles as if this were an established historical fact, embellishing his account with images of witches stirring cauldrons, speaking in tongues, dancing around bon fires, and sacrificing animals; if Schneider knows this to be historically factual, then he has access to information the rest of the world doesn't. He also discusses 'Samhain' as a god of the Celtic people who "controlled the dead or non-growing season," when whether or not 'Samhain' was a Celtic deity or even an entity, rather than a season or holiday, is something currently hotly debated among historians, scholars, and Wiccans.
Schneider is to be commended for his honesty in addressing some of the more unpleasant aspects of the holiday and its associations head-on, as well as for the wonderful historical scope he provides in placing Halloween origins in a wide, multi-cultural context. Readers will find a rich phantasmagoria of topics discussed in the essays, including the custom of sin eating, All Saints' and All Souls' Days, the belief in the 'veil between worlds' and the return of the dead to their families one the night of the harvest feast, the story of 'Jack of the Lantern,' Snap-Apple and Crack-Nut Nights, apple bobbing, fortune-telling, the Scottish influence on American Halloween traditions, Cabbage and Mischief Nights, the various theories surrounding the origin of trick-or-treating, the meaning of the literal 'scapegoat' and its influence of the appearance of the Christian Devil, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and even mention of the elves, gnomes, boogies, and goblins with which agrarian societies peopled the forests and fields.
The gorgeous main portion of the book is dedicated to collectible items and includes sections on Postcards, Decorations, Lanterns, Costumes, Hats and Masks, Noisemakers, Invitations, Games and Toys, Trick Or Treat Bags, and Vegetable People, Figurines and Candy Containers.
Halloween In America is by far the best of the books on Halloween collectibles available, and also the best of the Schiffer books on the subject. Many readers will remember these items from their childhood homes, classroom bulletin boards, Five & Dime store shelves and windows, and neighborhood parties. Readers will also be astonished at how the painters, artisans, and creators of these crepe paper, cardboard, composition, glass, and celluloid items were able to envision and capture what we remember and still think of as the very essence of holiday, and in a wide variety of forms: lonely, barren, orange-skied landscapes with setting suns ablaze or yellow rising moons, black cats and owls lurking in pumpkin patches with an anthropomorphic moon overhead, witches flying on broomsticks in formation over dark, isolated houses, skeletons parading in graveyards, etc.
Folklorists, sociologists, academics, and artists may have special appreciation for the visionary and sometimes surreal paintings, illustrations, and three-dimensional designs revealed here. One 1908 German postcard portrays a witch, a black cat and a vegetable spirit riding in a car made of a partially hollowed-out watermelon with squash-slice tires; another portrays a red-caped witch riding a immense cob of husked corn like a phallus-conquering Amazon through the stratosphere, with an astonished moon and planet Jupiter looking on; and a third, from 1911, shows children happily bobbing for apples in their warm, cozy home, while a tall, red-skirted, stone-faced witch, accompanied by an owl and a black cat, looks in at the window like the ultimate outsider and a disenfranchised, but still proud and powerful, loner. An entire page is devoted to 1910 postcards of anthropomorphic vegetables riding cars, dancing with or chasing fairies, and joyfully imitating human family practices. Others display Rockwell-like scenes of boys and girls carving pumpkins or trick-or-treating, or elderly women in dimly-lit Victorian mansions being frightened by children's pranks and high jinks.
Throughout the book, visionary landscapes and distant horizons beckon; curly-toed elves spring from hollow trees and slide gleefully down rooftops; lone witches warm their hands at their cauldrons under brilliant, star-filled skies; beautiful young ladies sleep fitfully on ruffled pillows while fairies circle their heads; peaked-hat shadows stretch in threateningly at midnight doorways; black cats screech to their own banjo, accordion, violin, and horn playing; and scarecrows extend their arms heavenwards to frighten off their circling opponents.
Readers will run for their magnifying and/or reading glasses so that none of the often minute detail will escape their gaze and inspection. Halloween In America is a huge treat, will make collectors and seekers out of most, and hopefully inspire generations to come to celebrate and pass on the traditions recorded here. Highly recommended to holiday lovers, educators, folklorists, Scout leaders, and all lovers of Americana.
For the Halloween lover.......2000-04-15
This is much more than a book for collectors of Halloween. This is the best book on the subject. I've read all the others and this is the bible of Halloween. If you have only one book on Halloween, this has to be the one. It brings back childhood. This book is really a look at what Halloween means. Ghosts and goblins, fall colors, adventure and childhood fears. I've read mine over and over and over again.
Book Description
In bygone times, the style of raised embroidery called stumpwork was the culmination of a young woman's education. Jane Nicholas, a leading modern embroiderer, has researched stumpwork for more than 20 years to create this dazzling compendium of its intricate techniques and colorful 3-dimensional effects. Beginning with detailed instructions on different ways of creating raised padded shapes, she goes on to offer a virtual cornucopia of nature-based designs--flowers, fruits, birds, animals, and insects--arranged in delightfully realistic patterns and interspersed with charming quotations. Elegant, useful, and inspiring, her book is a must-have for all dedicated embroiderers.

Heterogeneous In Concept, Orderly In Execution.......2004-11-29
This book, the earlier and superior companion to "European House Now," is an excellent introduction to the various modalities of modern architecture in America. Beginning with the thoughtful introduction, Doubilet and Boles showcase some truly stunning American homes, demonstrating the lasting value and societal insights that mark great architecture.
Without question the greatest architect featured in the book is the master of overlapping pure geometric shapes and planes, Richard Meier. Perhaps his greatest work is his stunning Grotta House, which just might win my vote for most beautiful private residence in the US. He is also featured in a piece of earlier work, the Hoffman House, which has since been modified by two of his proteges. Also interesting for its geometry, but more for its combination of materials is the Pacific Palisades House by Charles Gwathmey. Of great geometric interest are the Dan House by the brilliant Franklin Israel, and the stunning Lawson/Westen House by the genius of geometric manipulation, Eric Owen Moss. These homes are national treasures, are well illustrated here, and are also well explained by the enlightening text.
There are a couple of clunkers in the mix as well, namely the horrid deconstructivist monstrosity on Martha's Vineyard by Steven Holl. After looking at the illustrations and grasping that he was inspired by ancient use of whale bones as a building method, I appreciated why nobody builds houses from whale bones anymore. The Knee Residence finished in large maroon panels and small windows appears more like a prison than a single family home. Although I actually do appreciate the intriguing structural techniques used in these two homes, I cannot appreciate their lack of aesthetic refinement.
My only critique of the book as a whole is that the house plans are extremely small and difficult to read. This is a minor complaint, as overall I think this book, like the homes it illustrates, is a masterpiece.
Where are the Northwest architects??.......2003-07-03
Works by outstanding firms from the Pacific Northwest are totally omitted. (Miller/Hull, Cutler, Olson Sundberg Kundig and Allen...anyone?) An otherwise fine book.
great photos.......2002-05-15
This book is smaller than I thought, I thought it was going to be like a coffee table book. no it is like 7 inches tall, or maby I am getting bigger like in that movie where the guy gets big after drinking that stuff. I dont know.
Small But Delightful Book.......2001-01-28
This small but delightful book discussed about the modern American architectural, not modern in terms of Classic Modernism but contemporary via fusion of Classic Modernism & Post Modernism. The author stressed that USA, being a relatively young country has a "can do" attitude, open minded & daring to explore new ideas. It also mentioned that America isn't obsessive or overzealous in the interpretation of architectural stylistic movements. Rather, it only takes what it needs, reminding me of Japanese doing the same thing to technology, that is refining existing technology to make it better. There are 24 buildings (all of them are for residential purpose) here signifying where USA is at in terms of modern architecture. Notes rather than essays are utilised to explain the buildings. The pictures do most the talking in this instance. Notable architects are Stephen Holl (deriving his work via America's literary content), Richard Meier, Antoine Predock, Owen Moss, Arquitectonica, RoTo, Carlos Zapata, Morphosis, John Lautner, & so forth. The choosing of the works here should be of a subjective rather than objective nature because there are other architects which I believe do fit the bill in creating the so-called American architectural but have been overlooked such as Frank Gehry (his Californian style despite his Canadian origin), Ricardo Legoretta (the latest AIA Gold Medal laureate), Philip Johnson, etc. Still, this is a wonderful book to look thru.

Book Description
For the first time, a migraine sufferer presents-with the close guidance of a renowned medical specialist-a comprehensive, sympathetic, up-to-date, and understandable survey of this painful and life-disrupting disorder and the measures you can take to break its iron grip.
In Managing Your Migraine, Susan Burks, a longtime victim of the illness, speaks to all those who have not yet achieved adequate personal control and are dissatisfied with their current medical treatment. Tailoring her book to your individual needs through the use of self-surveys and questionnaires, she details lifestyle strategies for avoiding migraine and shows how to develop new skills for its control. She fully explains the role of dietary triggers in migraine attacks and outlines the three levels of dietary restriction appropriate for different types of sufferers. She also answers your questions about the effect of female hormones on migraine, the relationship between migraine and depression, and the potential dangers from nonheadache medications, noxious odors, and chemicals.
When as a last resort drug remedies are needed, the author discusses in detail the cost/benefit ratio of popular medications and explains how to avoid misusing them. Addressing both over-the-counter and prescription medications, the book identifies the most effective medicines, concentrating on those with the lowest potential for unpleasant and/or dangerous side effects, and gives migraine sufferers practical tips for fine-tuning their dosages.
Managing Your Migraine speaks to your needs as a migraine sufferer. It confirms that you suffer from a genuine physical illness and that others share your frustration, disappointments, and anger. Its goal is to move you beyond "learning to live with it" to a full understanding of its mechanisms, symptoms, and treatments. This book proves that you can take charge of your illness-and shows you how to do so safely, effectively, and with real confidence.
Customer Reviews:
migraine information with explanations!.......2000-02-21
In my experience, the best book about migraines (although now a bit old). Mostly, I have found all migraine books to provide the same information - what foods to avoid, what are common triggers, etc. This one, written by someone who has had extensive personal experience with migraines, gives much the same information but also provides background and possible explanations for why the things she has found, work for her. For myself, knowing the "why" is at least as important for knowing the "what."
It was also encouraging to read her own experiences. Often, I get frustrated with the books written by doctors, who have experience with patients, but don't actually experience the intolerable agony of migraine. Reading a book by someone who has gone through it all helps. Her review of the medical literature was important as a start for my own attempts to understand what is going on in my head when it feels like it is about to explode.

Book Description
By the time she was ten years old, Shirley Caesar had already made a name for herself. The tiny singer in pigtails and bobby socks was known throughout the Carolinas and Virginia as "Baby Shirley," and her foot-stomping, bring-down-the-house style was in demand for church services and revivals. To date, Shirley Caesar has had an astonishing career spanning four decades. The Lady, the Melody, and the Word is Shirley's own story of those years, told in her intimate and passionate style.

A mighty woman that allows God to use her for his glory.......1999-03-25
This was an extremely inspiring book. Pastor Caesar is beyond what you could imagine from a true woman of God. Her book makes you laugh,it makes you cry and above all makes you love her even more.
She was transparent and shared her life with you allowing you to come in and be close to her. She is a woman of much wisdom and full of love for her fellow man but above all for God and her beloved mama.
This book moved me so until I finished it in two sittings. It was powerful and let you see a real lady of God.
I'm so happy that living during this age allowed me to experience Shirley and she is truly a grand lady, yet so real almost like you could reach out and touch her. She draws you into her family so much so until you could almost see yourself at her home for dinner.
The book is a must read, you must own it to read and let Pastor Caesar know you love her by supporting her. God let her stay around a little longer.

Spiritual, Powerful, and a Blessing.......1998-11-11
I'm currently researching my family history that shares the same last name as Shirley Caesar. Our last name is spelled Ceasar/Caezer. In search of tracing my ancestors I pick up this book to read to get an understanding of our family roots and to see possible if we are related. Being a Christian as well, I also picked up the book to read a blessing. A blessing indeed is what I found. Shirley Caesar's story bought tears to my eyes, a smile on my face and laughter in my heart. It also bought about ministry in a part of my life that I am in of need right now. Her life is truly a testimony, a solider of the cross, and definitely a witness of the Lord. As a young person, Shirley is a Christian that I pray I will become like someday. She is my hero. This book will make you feel the Holy Spirit, see miracles, and hear His word. Of all the things in this book, I've learned to never run from His calling, His anointing, and obeying His word. Thank you Shirley Caesar for testifying and being a servant for the Lord. May God continue to Bless you.
Inspiration at it's very best........1998-10-16
This warm, emotional book details the life of the legendary, "First Lady of Gospel Music" Shirley Caesar. This book shows how God still moves and works in peoples lives when everything seems to be going against them.

Customer Reviews:
a real disappointment.......2003-01-10
In 1999, while living in Berlin and planning a trip to Lemberg (Lviv), I met the author and bought this memoir. I had hoped to learn a bit about Jewish life in pre-1939 Berlin and Lemberg. I was sorely disappointed.
The depiction of life in Lemberg and Berlin is superficial, but one should keep in mind how old the author was at the time of the story. The author has chosen to use her memoir as a form of cathartic therapy. She goes to lengths to portray her family negatively, and she gratuitously dwells on her psychosexual development as a child. Her psychological difficulties as an adult in Australia do not really have much relevance to the story of central European Jewry living under the shadow of doom.
Is there anything redeeming about this book? Some of the descriptions of her family's difficulties in Berlin are interesting, and the accompanying essay is not bad. This memoir is the sort of work that merits only the barest of mentions in a scholarly bibliographic essay or the bibliography of an academic work on prewar Berlin Jewry. The casual reader will likely find that he has wasted his time and money.
