A history of the Dalmatian Coast.......2002-06-03

The Adriatic coast of Croatia, known as Dalmatia, is made up of quaint fishing villages, 1000 islands, incredible beauty, and several thousand years of history. The area has been under the control of the Turks, the Italians, the Romans, the Greeks, the Venetians, Austria-Hungary, the Illyrians, and others, making for a pot-pourri of traditions. It's hard not to trip over history in these tiny villages (and a few big cities, like Split), which are home to spectacular architecture and churches, and artwork that could be in great museums.

This book is not a tourist guide, per se -- there are no tips on transportation, restaurants, and hotels. But if you are interested in history, it's an invaluable reference for your trip to Croatia. Even the smallest villages have entries. You won't find this information in the villages themselves.

Larger cities and islands in the book have maps highlighting the major attractions - city walls, churches, gates, museums, etc. The information on Split, Dubrovnik, Trogir, et al, is much better than what you get from the tourist office, and more complete than the standard guides (Lonely Plant, Rough Guide.) There is also information on a few towns in Bosnia that can easily be reached from the coast.

I bought this book in order to take a cycling tour of the islands, and I was pleased to see that my German tour guide was also using it. In fact, it's in the window of most bookstores in the larger towns, available in Croatian, German, French, and (only occasionally) English. So buy it before you go!

Description:
Stable oxygen isotope analyses of U-shaped spines removed at intervals along profiles of the outer shell surface of Pinna nobilis (L) were used to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) and validate the periodicity of adductor muscle scar rings on the inner shell surface. Elemental ratios (Mg:Ca and Sr:Ca) of spines, determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES), were compared with the SST estimated from the stable oxygen isotopic composition of the shell deposited at the same time. The elemental ratios and the stable oxygen isotopic composition recorded in the shell were significantly correlated: Mg:Ca ratio=0.0002 (seawater temperature)+0.0095 (r^2=0.445), Sr:Ca ratio=0.00005 (seawater temperature)+0.0014 (r^2=0.887). The ratios in the spines were highest when the SST was warmest during July and August and were lowest between January and February when the SST was minimal. The positions of the first and second adductor muscle scar rings, unlike the later rings, are often difficult to discern, and in large shells they are obscured by nacre. Seasonal patterns in the elemental ratios were used to characterise the age in regions of the outer shell surface corresponding to the first two years of shell growth. A combination of both elemental ratios and muscle scar rings were used to estimate the age and hence the growth rate of P. nobilis from three locations in the Croatian Adriatic. Annual cycles of shell growth, inferred from the seasonal pattern in the element ratios, were used to determine the season of recruitment of fan mussels at several localities along the Croatian coastline. Pinnids generally settled during late autumn and winter although one shell from Mali Ston Bay settled during the summer. P. nobilis from Mali Ston Bay exhibited the fastest growth reaching a length of ~60 cm and an age of 9 years, whereas those from Malo jezero grew the slowest attaining a length of ~50 cm at 12 years of age.

Comprehensive Textbook covering Corporate Tax.......2001-01-10

This textbook has a counterpart INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX, also published by West's Federal Taxation that is used extensively by business schools as well as accounting classes covering all the aspects of taxation.

The book is written in an easy to understand manner, which follows the most important codes that are used in tax today. The only drawback of these books are the fact that since the tax codes are constantly changing, the books are updated about every year.

This is a very well written book with great photos. Easy reading detailed information on specific gems mixed in with interesting tales of travel to exotic lands. Made me realize my thoughts of international jem trading had better be prepared with years of experience. For thousands of years neophytes have been seperated from their money by professional,usually generational traders. This book saved me alot of money just by convincing me to continue as a hobbyist, albeit a better educated one now. If you are interested in colored stones, I highly recommend "Secrets Of The Gem Trade"

Every child must learn to confront the cultural differences that surround them at some point and Mr. Wilcox's book provides a wonderful gateway to this confrontation. Its primary thrust of essential similarities in individual's lives despite the culturally different expressions of those lives is an increasingly vital lesson as the distances between cultures world-wide shrinks. This is not a conventional narrative of Coltrane's life, or even his recordings. Rather, it is a detailed discography both of released albums and of the many many unreleased recordings that circulate among collectors, and of a large number of recordings that sit in vaults around the world, largely inaccessible to anyone outside the recording industry.

Much of the information corrects the liner notes on releases from various labels, and, in fact, many record companies use the information in this volume when trying to figure out what they have in their vaults. The results are not always perfect: The new Coltrane 7CD box set from Fantasy of live recordings contains several errors in the liner notes. Without this book, you wouldn't know they were there.

The author is part of the Coltrane Syndicate, a group of Coltrane scholars including Wolf Schmaler and Michael Delorme, as well as David Wild (who has also published work on Coltrane's recordings). They are in fact authorized by the Coltrane Family to acquire and document recordings that cannot be released for various legal reasons, so this book is just about the only way to learn about recordings and recording dates (especially live dates) that help patch together Coltrane's works and times.

In addition to all the objective information, there is also a hefty selection of photos, and, even more so, album covers and posters for events, that really serve as a kind of giant scrap-book for the late master.

There is not -- and there is unlikely to be -- a better book published on the subject.
